I don't know what I'd do without this station!

John gets me goin' in the morning and I listen all day at work on my headphones.

Love all the live shows they bring us and tons of new local music.

Best independent radio station ever.  And you can stream them live on the web!!

Soundtrack:  http://www.youtube.com...

I love wakin' up on Saturdays and listening to the Positive Vibes show (reggae/dub/ska/island).  Instead of sleeping off a Friday night, I always make a point to jump outta bed, blast this program, and clean house (while skankin' to the beat).

How could KEXP get anything less than 5-stars?!  "Bad Corey!  Bad!"

Today was a banner day for John. I don't know if it was the Ravonettes live in NYC, or the Port O'Brien. Maybe it was the Friday song, or the new Maps.

At any rate, I still love this radio station like King Curtis loves him some bacon: http://www.youtube.com...

After all, KEXP is good for me, good for me, good for me.

Best local as well as national radio station, period.  They support local music and have a great line up of shows that play a variety of different things.  Plus the in studio performances are awesome and fun to play.

Another huge thank you to the Yelp community. I was becoming a dial-twister and longed for new music so to speak. Reviews make a difference.

thank you.

Now I can apply for more grants with inspiration! (PS I got an article published from listening to KING but I do need variety.)

I love to watch the studio performances while at work.  Really great music! I have a huge crush on Rachel Ratner. That's enough for me to give this station 5 stars.
I wish we had something this awesome in Chicago. Keep it up KEXP.

I L-O-V-E KEXP!!!!  This is the best radio station anywhere in the world.  There is nothing better than waking up to John in the Morning.  I love the music, the DJs, the people, the shows they put on, the bands they support, my fellow volunteers, everything.  And they play it all: from pop to rockabilly to ambiance to hip hop.  It really is a community of music lovers.

Plus, they put on great shows at Seattle Center during the summer, they have a kick-arse BBQ and they do sweet donor appreciation concerts at the Triple Door.

It is a nonprofit, listener-powered radiostation which is a rare commodity and getting rarer.  It is great to be a part of that community by supporting the station I love.  Keep it coming, KEXP!

One of my very favorite things about living in Seattle.

Waaaaaaaiiiiiiitaminute...

I don't live in Seattle. Never have. But when I slip those headphones on and fire up iTunes, I can almost feel the glorious rain and gloom of that beloved Sea-Town.

It's an old-fashioned radio station in the best sense of the term. DJ-concocted playlists, a staff passionate about finding and sharing quality music, and a perpetually ear-poppingly eclectic array of music from across the aural spectrum.

*sigh*

Five stars doesn't even begin to cover it.

this station remains as my fallback during my sleep-deprived commute to work every week, since my car has decided it no longer wants to play CDs and my mp3 player's wireless FM transmitter has collapsed in on itself. the range of music KEXP plays can't be beat, and I love discovering new music every now and then. Israeli hip-hop? I love it.

I love love love KEXP. I come from a land of very few good radio stations-only one in fact, and that's Dave FM- named Atlanta, where radio stations may start out as good but slowly drift into that "there should be something for everyone" mode, thus good stations are crushed and others turn vile. So I feel incredibly in awe of Seattle and its gorgeous people for not only not shutting down this radio station, but appreciating it and allowing it to flourish and enrich numerous lives. This really must be a magical place.

They are one of the best things about living in Seattle.  They make up a huge part of my day and my musical life.  Just listen and you'll see.

KEXP is the best radio station in Washington.
They have individuality, great mix of music, & good pragramming.
And don't forget! Free Concerts in Seattle Center! Gotta love that!
The fact that this is the station local bands are turning to to play their music says a lot about the quality of the station.
I can't wait to start volunteering for the station & I'm pumped for next months free concerts.

KEXP earns the title of best radio station around by playing an eclectic mix of great music, old and new,  regardless of genre or popularity, that highlights new, unknown, and often local artists.

All of the DJs put together great sets and are enjoyable to listen to during the breaks, however, http://KEXP.org is great because it allows loyal listeners to follow their favorite DJ at any time of the day.

KEXP has single-handedly gotten me through many work days and I appreciate their commitment to bringing listeners new and exciting music.

I go through phases where I don't listen to the radio at all, but when I'm in a phase where I DO, it's always KEXP (or NPR, but that's another story). I strongly appreciate the fact that they play actual music and have minimal annoying talking/advertisements.

I'll admit, sometimes the music is a little weird for my tastes (like the super twangy country, for example), but I can even appreciate the weirdness because at least they're playing something that's not manufactured nonsense.

I hear most other cities don't have anything close to KEXP's awesomeness, so I think it probably deserves 5 stars.

I think this is a very worthy station. It's the only station I have on in the car, and in my office I turn it on at times. Most of the time they play a variety of decent music. Sometimes they have a show that has super annoying music and I have to turn it off. But yay for being eclectic.

All that said, when I am at my computer and have my worldwide choice of radio stations, I do not choose to listen to KEXP. The music programming on KCRW is much better and they have an all-music channel on their website and through iTunes. So my money still goes to them.

But for in the car, local radio stuff, I like KEXP.

Whether you're 'Of Montreal' or from 'Calexico',
Whether you prefer 'Elbow' or 'The Shins',
Whether you have 'Talking Heads' or 'Flaming Lips',
KEXP is there.

When I moved to Seattle in 2000,  my music choices had deteriorated into the same six albums, forever stuck in my CD changer, never to leave.  My music was boring.  I had begun listening to AM talk radio to pass time.  My late-twenties were more like my late-fifties.  In short, I needed a music intervention.  KEXP provided that intervention and single-handedly renewed my love for music in the process.

KEXP introduced me to bands that I had never heard of; local acts like FCS North and Sleater-Kinney, local hip-hop from bands like Common Market and Blue Scholars, great indie bands from all over the country like Wilco and Arcade Fire.  My music collection grew exponentially as I would hear something new on KEXP, check their online playlist, and then head out to pick up new CDs each week.  My wallet shrank exponentially as well, but for once in a long while, I was loving music again.

The best part of KEXP is that it is public radio.  They play what the listeners want to hear.  I can remember calling in early on Saturday morning during Kid Hops' Reggae show and requesting The Abyssinians and actually speaking to the DJ.  I got hooked up with tons of free shows by Jon in the Morning and Darek Mazzone.  I attended special KEXP events at Bumbershoot and the Triple Door.  I became connected to the station.

As my love for KEXP grew, I began volunteering my time for the station's fundraising drives.  I would man the phones and take donations from other loyal listeners from all over the country.  New York City, Chicago, Miami, San Francisco and San Diego.  I would take calls from Spain, London, Italy, Finland and Sweden.  Why were there loyal listeners from all over the world you might ask?  Well, it's because of their live, CD quality Internet stream that you can access 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  Oh, and if you miss a show, you can listen to their archives for two weeks after the show airs.  By using http://KEXP.org, you can also access live, in-studio performances by some of the best indie recording artists alive.

I know I may sound like a commercial, I know I may sound superlative, but when something this special comes along, you need to tell people about it.  Alas, I no longer live in Seattle, where I can listen to my heart's content, but I always have http://KEXP.org to turn to.

For my 200th review, I wanted to thank KEXP, for making me a music lover again.

Just wrapped the 4th annual KEXP dance party@ Showbox SODO.

My neices and sister-in-law had a blast with me.

KEXP set up face painting, breakdancing lessons, making mix-CD's for father's day (their papa was unavailable for the event, but will no doubt love his gift!)

Good snacks (including cupcakes from royale!) & good tunes!

KEXP, you've made the day super special, so thank you!!

Soothe me, excite me, taint me, surprise me. That's everything KEXP provides for one who has drifted from the mainstream crap blaring on much of the airwaves. Especially in moving to Seattle, this has become my #1 station of choice. From Good ol Rock & Alternative, to Raggae/World Music, Rockabilly, Underground Rap, Drum n Bass, Jazz & Blues...just the right dose for a person who enjoys the trickles of variety.

Oh, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways....

They played Cocoa Tea's Barack Obama today. You wouldn't hear that anywhere else.

They are the only radio station (besides KGRG where I used to work at) that plays my favourite band- Sky Cries Mary. They also play the most unique remixes, and lots of Radiohead too. Ooh, and Johnny Cash. Atmosphere, Sigur Ros, Frou Frou, and Imogen Heap while we're at it. Oh I sink into their music. It's hard for me to leave my car sometimes because of this station.

But when I do get home, I race to the computer and look up the playlist to see who was just on so I can note it and find it to buy.

No commercials.

Lots of love & donations from loyal listeners (like myself) to keep it running.

There's something for EVERYONE with the variety of shows they have.

They keep you updated with the smaller (cooler) shows in town.

When you fall in love with or are intrigued by a song, you can go on their site and pull the playlist to see what it was so you can go get it yourself.

Lots of cool KEXP-hosted events all the time.

The Dj's are super real and not jerks AT ALL. No radio egos here.

KEXP- K.I.T., stay sweet.

Six Reasons I Love KEXP

1. John in the Morning
2. Streaming online: For those times I've lived in other parts of the country like Chicago where there is no decent radio programming
3. Free concerts at Mural Ampitheater (and other locations) like the Pela gig.  An amazing night.
4. Turning me on to DJ Delores
5. For being a part of what puts Seattle on the National music radar by presenting shows around the country.  It cracked me up when I went to Siren Fest at Coney Island and saw that KEXP was the big sponsor.  My hometown pride was swelling that day!
6. Sonic Reducer

Thank you, KEXP, for streaming online.

I was introduced to this fine station during my time in Seattle last October, and their stream has been at the top of my iTunes most played ever since.  I've been telling people that KEXP is like what I'd do if I owned a radio station.

Living in Denver, a city with almost no good radio (save for 1190, but only during the day), I'm glad I can double dip in another city's awesomeness.

Seatte, you guys really need to know how lucky you are to have KEXP. When we were in Seattle my friend Janice who works there was nice enough to bring us into the studio to watch my old bud John Vanderslice perform on his birthday! The library is insane to behold! Chicago has CHIRP in the making, so hopefully one day that will be somewhere near as cool as KEXP. :)

MY GOD, do you Seattle people have any idea how LUCKY you are to have a radio station this awesome??

One would think that with the population down here in Atlanta that we could have a radio station with a similar vibe but NO. Now don't get me wrong - we have some cool college radio stations, Album 88 and WREK, but they just can't compete with KEXP. They play erratic programming where KEXP tends to have a little more focus.

I adore the morning show and in Atlanta that is about all I get to hear, because of the time difference. It's perfect. Easy streaming connection with the option of playing it via MP3, Real Player, or Windows Media....my macbook at home prefers the MP3 and at work the Windows Media. I always have a great connection and it never buzzes in and out like some streaming radio stations.

Thank God for the internet, and I hope you Seattle residents never take my beloved KEXP for granted.

And for all you people who can't check it out via streaming radio....they have a podcast where they give you a free song, daily. I have my iTunes set up to download it automatically and I get to listen to a new song or band that I haven't heard of everyday.

KEXP is a breath of fresh air in a world of consolidation. They have fantastic diverse programming and DJs that are passionate about the music that they play. The KEXP Blog is a fun read and a good source to find new music, as well as the KEXP Song of the Day podcast.

The staff members are really nice, too. I asked to get a tour of the station because I wanted to get some pointers for my own college radio station and not only did they set up an appointment within the same week, but station director Tom Mara himself took me on the tour. He gave me a lot of information and was more than happy to answer all my questions.

KEXP is also a great place to volunteer. I'm usually very shy, so I was really intimidated the first time that I went to the station to help with a mailing, but everyone was very welcoming.

KEXP is so eclectic that you can't have it on all day long.  For example their long-running Positive Vibrations show is for reggae heads only.  I like their lefty news programming and their late night weirdness.

I first heard of this station when I visited Seattle about 9 yrs ago. It was only a couple of yrs ago I started listening to them. I am so glad I have. They have such a wide range and sometimes eclectic selection of music. I am constantly exposed to music I wouldn't hear anywhere else. A great way to sample music is to sign up for their Song of the Day podcast. Check them out, if you really love them, donate! They are true to the phrase: listener supported!! Tune your dial to 90.3 or stream them on your computer, you wont be disappointed.

I don't listen to KEXP 24-7, but when I do, I am usually in my car (since someone stole the speaker cables at work for my puter), and I consistently think I need to write down what song this is. This station has DIVERSITY, which pretty much every other station in this town does not. This station has a lot of history, and even more heart. We are lucky to have this station here. The people running this station care about the music they play, they answer your emails, and basically kick some ass in comparison to all others.
Thank you for opening my eyes to the world of music that is NOT cookie cutter. You are rad.

When I lived in Seattle, I listened to KEXP almost every single day. I had it on at work, in the car, and sometimes at home. Now I live on the other side of the country, and I can still listen online (even though I don't like that as much as listening to a regular radio). John in the Morning was my favorite, and he and Cheryl Waters and Kevin Cole introduced me to a lot of great music I didn't know about.

It also gave me the chance to listen to things I wouldn't normally have. Shake the Shack, Roadhouse, Audioasis, Sonic Reducer, Preachin' the Blues, and Positive Vibrations were all great shows I looked forward to. And I remember enjoying Jazz Theatre on my way to pick up a friend at the airport late at night on more than one occasion.

Thank you KEXP for not hosting a bunch of jerks who wax pedantic over topics best left for after I freakin' wake up in the morning. Thank you for that.

I would also like to thank you for playing a wide variety of music not normally heard on the radio (for better or for worse). I have been a big fan going back to the KCMU days of yesteryear , donated a fair amount of money in the past and have always enjoyed this station.........................

BUT............

Minus one star for advertising AND fund raising, pick one or the other.
You guys did both this morning.  I'd rather suffer through two minutes of commercials, rather than listen to ten minutes of  being panhandled in my car on the way to work.

You call it  "Underwriting". I call it "Advertising"

Either way, no matter what you call it, pick one.

4-4-08
Plus one big star for "preachin'  the blues".
I had no business giving this station four stars....(I'm kinda a dick at times.)

I dig KEXP, but during the day they play some really weird stuff that I can't usually get into.

It is what I usually have on if I'm NPR'd out or they have on a three hour report about some grad student expounding on the plight of the giant three-eyed depressive beavers of the amazon river valley or something else completely boring.
