I find myself wanting to like Kerbey Lane (although I don't know why), but really, it's very average.
I usually come here when I crave pancakes, just because the first time that I took a bite of their blueberry pancakes, they were amaaazing (fluffy, but slightly crisp on the top and bottom)! But, either I've developed unreasonably high expectations after that first bite or Kerbey Lane is just inconsistent with their cooking-- they just don't taste the way I remember them tasting that first time around :( I've also tried their mocha java and seasonal pumpkin pancakes. The mocha java was alright (with that kind of name, I just really couldn't resist myself), but I couldn't even finish my pumpkin pancake-- wayyy too much nutmeg, or whatever spice they use to make pumpkin pancakes.
I recently had their creamy red pepper vegetarian soup, which also tasted average. A good soup for the winter-- it gives you that spicy tingly feel in your throat. I wish it wasn't as creamy though.
Their Kerbey Queso is pretty good (apparently, that's something they're famous for)-- but it'll run you up $7-$8 just for that appetizer.
To me, Kerbey Lane is super pricey! I tend to order pretty conservatively, and even then I find it difficult not to drop at least $10 here. For a short stack of pancakes and a cup of soup, I find that a little ridiculous. Every time I eat here, I can't help feeling a little short-changed when I walk out, or wishing I'd used that $10 to order some quality Asian take-out instead.
I'd come back if I could ever make their early-bird specials between 4-7 am-- I'd be willing to give their pancakes another try for $4.
Been here 20-30 times, I'd guess. Usually has quality, interesting food, although there are definitely occasional exceptions. Gets a bit of a bum rap from students who have eaten there ten too many times. Lots of variety, both healthy and indulgent options, vegetarian-friendly, and seasonal menus (my favorite). The original Kerbey on 38th seems to be a little better all-around, though, probably because it's not as swamped with (occasionally drunk) college students in the wee hours of the night. Wait staff is usually friendly, although occasionally bizarre if you're there after midnight. Favorite quote from one of them, as he refilled our water, "Super-waiter strikes again, haha!"
Anyway, for the price, it's great.
A fav of mine and a fav of Austin's. Best time to go here is when school is out because otherwise it will jam packed and tough to find parking. But that really holds true for this one and the one on Kerbey Lane. They can get jam packed so be prepared to wait.
But all in all it is well deserved. By far what there known for is there pancakes which are phenomenal but they have so good burgers and some pretty good humus as well.
In summary, be patient and be nice to the waiters cause they will be nice to you.
I don't dislike Kerbey Lane. They have a fantastic menu. They have a wide variety of food. They are well priced. They are open 24/7.
What they aren't: Consistent. I grow attached to entrees, but with this Kerbey the food never tastes the same. Sometimes it's really good, and sometimes its a major disappointment.
They have. The worst. SERVICE. EVER. I think it must be because it's by UT. I think because there are just a bunch of dumb kids who go in there and make the lives of the employees SO HARD. I DON'T CARE!
I don't care what the last customer did, I am a good, polite, and well-tipping customer, and I deserve to have my order taken in a timely manner, and I would appreciate that I see my waiter at least one other time before I have to pay. Sometimes, I won't even know who my waiter is as one person takes my drinks, another takes my order, another delivers my food, and then I have to go find someone to give me my check.
I've had three particularly troubling experiences.
One of the first times I ever went, I got the portebella mushroom sandwich. That night I woke up and had horrible food poisoning for hours into the next day to the point where I had to go to the urgent care and be put on fluids.
But I went back.
Once I found a bag clip in one of my tacos. That meal was comped, no big deal I guess.
One morning I got sat in a back room with my boyfriend. I guess the waitress in that section was getting off shift, but I can't help that is where they sat us. She took our order right away, so I guess it was good that we already knew what we wanted. Literally two minutes later, we had our food served to us. OK, it's okay, we'll just take our time eating. It was Sunday; we liked going out Sundays to drink coffee and talk, you know? But, NO, she had other plans. She started cleaning up the section. She shoved a broom under our table and swept under my feet while I ate. She reached over us eating to refill sugar packets and rearrange our table. WHILE WE ATE. And she was incredibly rude and impatient. A good 15 minutes after we arrived we were served with our bill and ushered out the door. I was so incredibly offended. The first and only time I have not left a tip IN MY LIFE.
Overall, the service isn't the greatest.
Hey, but I keep going back for the convenience, food, and hours.
I really enjoyed their Pulled Pork Nachos they had on the menu this Fall.
The South Lamar location has better service, but still fluctuating food qualities.
Every time I eat here, I always sort of regret it. A group decided to go there for lunch and I had the chicken enchiladas. It wasn't very good and now my stomach is cramping.
Well, I was flagged for removal, as I didn't make it clear that I was in presence during said experience, as I WAS, so here again, is my review. My girlfriend will post her (likely identical) account shortly.
"Removed Review": Boy, I am looking at my Yelp reviews, and I sure am a love it or hate it kinda guy. That being said, I haven't even Yelped in quite a while. Although, I guess it has also been quite a while since the last time my girlfriend's car was towed from the Kerbey Lane parking lot while she sat inside eating lunch with a UT professor discussing a job interview to teach psych classes across the street. Mgmt even refused to help get her car, and better, pay for their mistake. THAT being said, I am gonna file this gem under ''Hate.'' Get fucked, Mr. Kerbey Lane, and by the way, you owe my girlfriend $250 and her afternoon back. Thanks!
PS. On a friendly note, a friend was telling me tonight that he had met a girl in Paris who was from Austin, and she said the thing she missed most about Austin was the Kerbey Queso. It's literally famous. That must mean something.
Hi, elephant in the room! I'm Katya and I prefer Magnolia Cafe. With that out of the way, I can still say that I like Kerbey Lane. A lot of the same stuff, right down to the awesome gingerbread pancakes. So let's talk differences.
It's really quite simple. The atmosphere is a little more generic at Kerbey Lane, and the place sometimes makes me feel dirty because of how badly the linoleum and wall coverings are peeling in certain places. The lighting reminds me of a backyard bug zapper, and the portions seem a bit skimpy lately, too. And I consistently get worse service at Kerbey Lane.
On the plus side, Kerbey Lane has a much more extensive menu, a lot more seasonal stuff, and I prefer their desserts.
For me, it comes down to the semi-creepy atmosphere that makes me feel a little uncomfortable, and the service, which can make me feel downright unwelcome. On good days, it's fine. But on bad ones, I could die of dehydration while waiting on my server to come around or choke to death while being pressured to scarf down my meal and leave. Overall, very mediocre. But, hey... that isn't a horrible thing. Just as much as mediocrity means "not great," it also means "not bad." It just depends on what matters to you.
I was at Kerbey Lane over the weekend and WOW! I had been a few times before but remember it being sort of average. On Saturday, I ordered the Eggs Francisco and my dining partner had the Migas. Both were absolutely fantastic and that is when we discovered how wonderful the queso was!!! It is all about the queso... it seems to be a recurring theme in my reviews! =)
We liked it so much that we went back for breakfast again the next day. I thought it would be hard to beat what I had the day before but I ordered the Portabella Mushroom Omelette next. HOLY SMOKES! The pecan basil pesto blew my mind! I almost told them to leave it off too! I think food-wise, I might have been reborn last weekend in Austin. We ordered a whole bowl of queso before breakfast was served and it was so delicious! What a nice surprise of beans, guac and pico inside!
I Kerbey Lane! =)
I never been to this location and my first thought where am I going to park. Luckily since school is over, there were plenty of parking to park. The services was really good and the waitress came by to check on the group.
I order french toast since I have been craving for a while and bacon. All over the food and the services was good. I usually don't go to this area because it is hard to park, specially when school is in session. will go there again to that location? maybe. it all depend of the time and day.
I wish I could love Kerbey, but I can't. It seems they always burn my sausage or I just ending up having a sub-par breakfast experience.
It's super when they have their pumpkin pancakes and you can have a nice hot coffee, especially during the winter months (or winter-ish months), but other than that, I just keep on trying, perhaps its futile.
Wish I could dig.
Doesn't have as much history as the original but still has lots of good food and good prices. Parking as with most of the rest of Austin is a mess. There is a parking lot that always seems to have cars idling in the parking lot waiting and hoping someone leaves because there is no other place to park.
The pancakes are very good and popular. They have various flavors but the buttermilk are the most popular even though their buttermilk has a somewhat different flavor, it is good and will quickly grow on you.
Oh, I almost forgot. Their Kerbey Queso is amazing and I would recommend it even with breakfast. Mmmm. Good.
My first visit to this Kerbey Lane location was around 8.00 one Saturday morning well before West Campus was awake and apparently, the kitchen too.
I love Kerbey Lane breakfasts...they are the standard that I use to measure breakfast, but no more. I was really disappointed in this location. I'm not sure if the menu at all locations have changed or this one. There was a time when I could order an omelet, two sides, AND a short stack. Sadly, those days are gone like so many storefronts along the drag. I could have either a short stack OR the two sides, not both. What gives? Economy that bad?
I opted for the short stack since it's Kerbey Lane after all. The pancakes didn't disappoint, but my Kerbey Scramble did. Looked like one egg at the most and a couple of veggies.
Kerbey Lane used to be my breakfast standby in Austin. I am seriously going to have to consider a new breakfast place after my visit to the Guad location.
I gave Kerbey Lane one star because:
1. The parking situation is really grim and people get nasty. We got in arguments with people standing in the spots so cars couldn't park there... BOO
2. While I was telling the host how many people were in my party, some random guy walked by and PUT HIS FINGER IN MY MOUTH and ran away - so we left, and didn't eat here.
I gave it a second star since I didn't actually get to eat anything since I was so disgusted by the finger/mouth business. Who does that?
Diners, I love them and live by them. My lady and I hunt for them. Whenever we enter a new city or place that we have never been it's one of the first things we search for. She found this place on her first trip to Austin but at a different location, so we decided to go for breakfast on our recent weekend trip to see the bats. (we chose this one due to proximity of where we stayed)
The portions were huge. I couldn't even finish my food, but in a good way. I Had the Paris Texas which was a order of french toast and Migas. I don't eat meat and am used to NYC diners so i expected it to not be totally filling without the meat toppings for my miga's, and small portions that i am used to in NY. that being the case I ordered a side of home fries as well...
Let me tell you they do not joke around, I will try to post a pic on here later. The food was excellent. My french toast was a little dry but it was made up for with the fine service and coffee. I had never experienced a Miga before but was very excited to indulge my curiosity. I had the basic egg with green salsa and corn tortilla's. Everything tasted great. the potato's were just the way I liked them as well. (to warn you i like them crispy and a bit burnt without grease)
Overall a great experience and a decent atmosphere. Congrats Kerbey you are my first 5 star in TX.
PS... the "soysauge" was the first fake sausage i liked the flavor of...
I was searching respite from the awful traffic after work one evening and decided Kerbey Lane was the place! I have only been to the south location and that was for breakfast food so I was really curious to see how dinner would compare. I ordered a sandwich which turned out to be from an old menu so I had to quickly make another choice.(insert sad and annoyed face) So, cheeseburger and sweet potato fries it was with an appetizer of roasted red pepper hummus and pita. ( I met my friend David so no I'm not a hog Jimmy! We shared).
The hummus was AWESOME. Fresh and hot pita with a generous mound of hummus. It had a refreshing lemon tang and a cayenne kick. YUM
Cheeseburger was a frozen patty that resembled the cardboard it originally was packaged. Stay away from the burger which is a shame because diners should = great burgers.
I really should give this a 3 star review but easy parking and an adorable server bumps it to a 4.
This place never fails to be mediocre. The interior is in the style of run of the mill blah, which is okay for roadside diners with dirt cheap food. Kerbey Lane, however, is neither of these. The queso is tasty and I do quite like the Paris Texas Platter (Migas + French Toast) but everything else I have ordered has left something to be desired.
It's not bad (I have been many a times, especially in the middle of the night) and it tends to meet my stomach's needs at the time (it is convenient to college kids, after all) but it just isn't very good. Really not worth making the trip unless you are a UT alum trying to relive your college days or desperate for sustenance.
I work down the street from this location, and sometimes order to go. Without fail, I am disappointed. I ordered from here today, and was stoked on the new tomato summer menu. I Love Love Love tomatoes and ordered the tomato and squash fries. Battered and fried tomatoes and squash served with marinara sauce, sounds delicious right?
Wrong! They were not made to order, and were cold and soggy.
My friend had the Vegan breakfast platter, she loved it. It came with vegan blueberry pancakes, tofu scramble and soy-sage.
I prefer the Kerbey on Kerbey, much better service, and I have never had cold or soggy food!!!!
Like the location on the actual Kerbey lane much better, not that there is anything wrong with this one just that I seem to fit into the other one a little better (as far my age is concerned).
Just recently my boyfriend and I have begun to recognize Kerbey Lane as a viable option for food. Our first couple of months here, we tried it out, but I was underwhelmed. I think I just wasn't ordering the right things though. I had always liked their queso (I don't think it's amazing, but it's good), but I found their chips to be disappointingly underwhelming, the soup when I had it was a bit watery, and the tacos were blah.
Since we've been trying it out again, we've been making better choices! The migas tacos are good, the chicken sandwich is awesome, great sweet potato fries, and so far every entree we've had was DELICIOUS, surprisingly so. I had underestimated this place, and it's really nice to know that there's a decent restaurant available 24 hours. Go Austin!
As for the service, we've actually never gone when it was crazy packed, so I don't know about that, but the service isn't good regardless. We've been doing take-out, which is painless. Just remember who took your order.
A good friend of mine recently moved from upstate New York down to Austin. After having numerous discussions about our lives, what we missed about New York and whether or not I should move back, we settled on something interesting: most of the country lacks diner culture. Good, cheap food perhaps served 24hours (depending on the style of diner).
We each decided Kerbey Lane is the Austin equivalent to the northeast diner. Kerbey Lane offers up a variety of typical 24 hour diner fare while incorporating a fair amount of Tex-Mex into their menu. Best of all, they serve something known as Migas! Scrambled eggs mixed with pico de gallo and tortilla chips with a side of beans, rice and tortillas. A fairly delicious spin on your typical morning egg dish. But why only three stars? Two main problems: $2 coffee and rather average food overall. Sure, the migas were good, but not mindblowing for $7.50. I've been to better diners and have consumed higher quality Tex-Mex. Still, solid place for a late night eat or a hangover breakfast.
Another Austin staple...gotta love the Kerbey Queso, the blueberry and the gingerbread pancakes, the omelettes, the hot cocoa, and the Greek chicken (I don't think that last one is a staple, but I ordered it pretty frequently).
Due to the high volume of customers, waits can get REALLY long, and service isn't always very attentive (not always their fault, I've had some REALLY overworked servers).
I think everyone and their mom has probably already been here, but if not, then get your butt in and eat something! Ideally at a non-peak time, if there is one.
I was never a big fan of Kerbey Lane, but I went 'cos a few of my friends love this place and would sucker me into going with them. The food is mediocre. Service is not bad. The only thing I can really praise is the queso, which is made with white cheese.
The last time I was in there, my waitress was not so great. I went in around 6am, and it was the end of her shift. She rushed me to pay since she was about to get off, and she said she would not ignore me, but she pretty much did after I paid her. On the other hand, the late night servers are pretty top notch. You gotta give them cred for handling all the obnoxious, drunken students who stumble in after being down at 6th St. all night.
Even though I live closer to the original Kerbey Lane, I actually prefer the UT location. I only went to the original one time - our pancakes were dry and the service was indifferent. I haven't had a bad experience at this one at all. The food's always great and the servers are super-friendly. I've only strayed from the breakfast menu once to try the chipotle grilled cheese sandwich. While that was tasty, the 24-hour breakfast is where it's at. This morning, I had the baked potato omelet with a short stack of raspberry-blueberry pancakes (the special pancakes of the day). The baked potato omelet is something special - well-seasoned chunks of potatoes, bacon, shredded cheese and sour cream enclosed in a crepe-like scallion omelet. I've had it a few times before and it never disappoints.
It's hard to go to Kerbey Lane and not get the pancakes (unless you get the migas and queso). The regular flavors (buttermilk, gingerbread, apple wheat and blueberry) are all tasty, but I usually opt for the specials if they sound good. While the gold standard of special pancakes is the pumpkin ones that they make in the fall, today's blueberry-raspberry ones were really nice. The fruit was in small pieces, but well-distributed throughout the pancake - so no all-pancake or all-fruit bites. No syrup required for these, either.
My one problem with Kerbey Lane is their hot tea. They just bring you a partially-full cup of hot water and a tea bag. When I remember this fact (I didn't this morning), I'll just order water or iced tea instead. On the plus side, they will give you more hot water if you request it. The ambiance is fine - big windows bring in lots of light during the day. The music is always great, though. It was kind of weird to hear Neutral Milk Hotel over this morning's breakfast, but it actually kind of fit the place.
Whenever I'm in need of migas, Kerbey Lane comes to mind. They are absolutely delicious here. I will eat them for any meal, oh I want some right now!
I've always had great service here, never a bad experience. The Kerbey Queso is also a must have, great drunk food at 3 AM :)
I wish it wasn't so damn popular that I had to wait among the bajillion sorority and fraternity kids on Saturday/Sunday mornings, but alas I will because I can walk here. And I just love you Kerbey so much!
Note to self: Stay away from their $6 rock at 4 in the morning.
Oh did I say rock? I meant the veggie burger. Burnt to a crisp, it crumbled like a fragile, fragile rock. You pathetic thing, you.

The diverse menu with nice specials doesn't always offer the best cooking. I was pretty surprised… Read more »
Def does not have the consistency or ambiance of the other locations - from service to food presentation, it's a notch below the others.
But the menu is rock solid and if you don't go on a Saturday night or after a UT game, you'll have a decent experience.
Very diverse menu with everything from eggs/pancakes to pecan-crusted trout to soups and salads. They also have a seasonal menu which brings a solid lineup of foods made with vegetables of the given season.
Everything is grown locally and is super-fresh. Always friendly service, open 24 hours, but sometimes there's a pretty significant wait.
Favs:
Kerbey/Cowboy Queso
Eggs Francisco
Kerbey Panini
Kerbey Chicken
Paris Texas Platter
Smoked chicken soft tacos
Tomato Pie (Seasonal)
Sweet Potato Fries!
Location specific: This is the worst location of the restaurants, but if you happen to be on campus, you could do a LOT worse.
The bastard child of the original Kerbey Lane, Kerbey Lane: UT Campus is a staple of University of Texas life. Some declare Kerbey Lane as overrated. Perhaps this is true, but what better place to get fresh, specialty pancakes or a filling diner plate at 3 a.m. Tuesday morning? From Tex-Mex to breakfast plates to fusion Mediterranean, Kerbey Lane presents a rare melting pot of various cultures and identities.
The service is sometimes slow, especially on late weekend nights, but the staff always displays a cheery mood. That's hard to do, and I respect them for that. The atmosphere is that of a diner, fitting for a university joint. If you're looking for a fancier vibe, visit the original Kerbey Lane on Kerbey Lane.
Go here for the food, but also enjoy your experience. You'll be back, perhaps at 3 a.m. in the morning.
This place reminds me of a Northern California breakfast hot-spot, Hobee's. It's laid-back, basic, honest, and good. Nothing mind-blowing, but you don't feel like you're being robbed blind, either.
I almost got the gingerbread pancakes, then chickened out at the last minute (fearing a sugary stomachache) and ordered the apple-whole-wheat pancakes. When my plate arrived, I was convinced that they'd read my mind and brought me the gingerbread pancakes anyway. There were no apples anywhere! Finally, I found two tiny bits of apple in the bottom pancake. Hm, okay. The flavor was predominantly honey-wheat, which was still good, just not anything amazing. I liked that they had interesting options for pancakes, though, and I'll try the gingerbread ones if I ever make it back to Kerbey Lane someday.
My two friends had the American Breakfast, which came with scrambled eggs that they weren't crazy about. I can't eat eggs, so I didn't taste them and can't give you my own opinion. However, my one friend raved about the home fries, and the other loved her grapefruit and English muffin.
Overall, Kerbey Lane is good deal for a decent, just-like-momma-used-to-make-style breakfast. Well, I only wish my momma made gingerbread pancakes. ha!
I must echo the sentiment that Kerbey Lane Cafe is one of those places you go back to over and over again--either for convenience or for the hope that their eclectic menu will somehow, someday live up to its potential.
Though it never really does. Meh. Given, I am not really much of a breakfast person. I consider myself a pretty damn good cook, and breakfast is by FAR the easiest thing to make. But to be perfectly honest, I will choose sleep over breakfast any day of the week. So I rarely order breakfast items...though I have bought the pumpkin pancake mix to make at home when I have a craving.
I have tried multiple things on the menu, but all of them have been a disappointment for me, save for:
--turkey and avocado quesadillas
--California enchiladas
And yet somehow, I keep going back. I think it's due to the fact that it's the only place on the Drag with half-decent parking space, and during your hour lunch break, you really can't waste time searching for a parking spot.
Being originally from San Antonio, I must admit I wish we had something remotely like Kerbey Lane over there...I mean, the only 24-hour joints we have are Jim's and IHOP...I'd like to see more variety in their menu like Kerbey Lane has.
PANCAKES. So many delicious flavors. And in such huge amounts! Yesterday's special was the cinnamon and peaches. Delicious. Slightly dry, but plenty of syrup to make up for that.
Quick service (on a Tuesday morning at 8:30), lots of refills and attention.
Being new to Austin, I heard great things about this place and their food. Indeed, the food was perfectly ok, not exceptional but very kid-friendly and a good place for a late breakfast. But the service was incredibly substandard. The waiter could not have been less interested in us, did not smile once, never offered coffee refills (I had to flag him down twice) and gave us the wrong bill. Lovely. The coffee cup was badly stained: not the kind of faint stain that never comes off but the rubbery kind that simply needs a quick steel pad rubbing. (I know, I worked in restaurants for years.) How disgusting! I asked for a new cup and was told they were all pretty much that way and, yes, my new cup was. Yuck! When we left, the hostess was hunched over just bored as hell; my bemused and pointed stare finally yielded a belated, "Thanks!" Guys, you can do much better.
Ah, my beloved Kerbey Lane.
This is where my roommate & I took our parents after signing the lease on our first apartment together, where we'd eat to celebrate the end of finals, where we ate on Halloween (Wonder Woman costume and all) and where we'd go (fueled by alcohol) at 3 a.m. on a mission for Cowboy Queso. You've GOT to try the queso.
The pancakes are de-lish (gingerbread, apple whole wheat and raspberry, oh my!) but the seasonal pumpkin pancakes are my all-time fave. Come October, hunt these babies down.
The migas are good, but not as great as the ones at Trudy's down the road. They have a fantastic (and giant) Caesar salad and yummy desserts. Try the sticky bun; it's a mess of sugary bliss.
I got hooked on the soup & salad combo, which I know sounds odd. But it was so good that I actually called it in to go, on numerous occasions. Get the house salad with ginger-soy dressing; it's one of the best salad dressings I've ever had. Something about the tangy sweetness. And then savor the all-natural chicken tortilla soup. Chock-full of chicken, with avocado, cheese and cilantro...mmmmm.
I would like to add that people seem to prefer either Magnolia Cafe or Kerbey. Rumor has it that a married couple started both restaurants, but got divorced and now one spouse owns Kerbey and the other, Magnolia. At any rate, I will always prefer Kerbey.
Food is decent and this location is convenient if you're on campus. I definitely prefer the original--the Kerby Lane locaton... I absolutely 'HEART' the Kerby Queso. Now that I'm in Dallas--I still crave the yummy white queso, with a scoop of guacamole and pico. When we were in ATX visiting recently, we took my brother here for breakfast and I seriously considered getting it for breakfast--it's that good!
Location, location, location. Typical Friday night - get drunk at Hole in the Wall, exit, turn left, stumble approximately 300 feet, turn left, enter Kerbey Lane.
They have pretty good omelets, but really, how hard would a restaurant have to work to screw up an omelet? My roommate got a piece of chocolate cake that was pretty good, and definitely sizeable. The fruit that came with my omelet was surprisingly ripe and delicious, and the service has always been great when I've been there (late night weekends)!
I would stick with basic diner food here, though. If lobster bisque ever appears on the menu, I think the safe bet would be to steer clear.
I only gave it three stars because it's nothing spectacular . . . but it's good, and I'd definitely say it's great for the late-night, post-drinking munchies.
If there was one word to describe Kerbey Lane it would be inconsistent. Sometimes I come here and the food and service is great, other times it is just the opposite. The food is good enough usually, and the wait staff definitely gives you something to talk about. There was a time we went that our waitress was cussing out a fellow employee but as she turned to our table her demeanor completely changed and spoke in a completely different tone. I had to keep myself from laughing.
Be sure to try the Kerbey Queso. Some may say its over hyped but it is some of the better restraunt queso I've had. I've also discovered that the breakfast tacos here are decent. You can get 2 of them and a drink for about $7 after tip.
I've been to the Kerbey Lane on Kerbey Lane and I would agree that that one is better. This Kerbey seems to be kind of dirty and is always pretty packed.
The parking lot here is a joke. There are maybe 20 spots but only one way to get in and out and the spots in back are really hard to get out of. But then again, the Kerbey Lane Kerby only has street parking.
When I first moved here over a dozen years ago, the original Kerbey was a destination. Today there are a few more Kerbey's and this one is the worst. It's only one stop light away from my house and I seldom feel the need to go inside. The service always slow and the food just isn't very good. I applaud that their veggies are organic and that they seem to be a good local business, but I just have no urge to eat anything they serve, because there is a good chance it just won't be any good
if i were a UT student, i would gain the freshmen30 (not 15).
paris texas platter -- migas con queso and french toast
the migas is kinda like a egg, diced tomato, tortilla chips scramble. get it with the queso. the queso sauce is a bit extra...think it's 75 cents but worth it. YUM-MY!! =)
french toast was just your standard.
i wish i could eat the migas con queso in CA!!! maybe i'll just have to search for recipes and make my own.
i'd have migas con queso on corn tortilla daily if my waistline permitted.
KERBEY!! WHY DID YOU TAKE AWAY MY PANINI/SALAD COMBINATION MEAL!!?!?! I live on that thing - seriously. Kerbey has the BEST paninis I've ever tasted in my life, and the salad was just the right accompaniment to make me feel like I've been eating healthy, yet also feel stuffed. :( Now I have to order them separately? WHY. WHY WOULD YOU DO SUCH A THING?
That said, you do have other tasty foods, Kerbey Lane Cafe. I particularly love the fried tomatoes you came out with for this summer's seasonal fare. You also have some mighty yummy chicken enchilada soup. I also like that I can occasionally order a beer with my pancakes at 2 PM. Huzzah!
But, you've gotta do something about the drunks and homeless people who wander into the Guad location late at night. Just un-fun.
Ok. I don't know anyone that thinks it is a great idea to go to Kerbey Lane at 7:30pm. It's not one of those places. 2 am? BRING IT ON! :)
I enjoy Kerbey Lane and think the food is def goodness after having fun around town (with alcohol that is...). I had a good Breakfast Burrito and French Toast. MMMM.... Very yummy! It also has a special place in my heart as the first time I visited this location the waiter gave me his phone number on the check.... LOL.. so that makes it a classic in my mind. :)
After a 5-hour flight from Los Angeles, I found myself so hungry I couldn't sleep. So before heading to my friend's house, we made the choice to go to Kerbey Lane on the hopes that they would give us something to soothe our empty stomachs.
The people that eat here are mostly college students or otherwise young adults. They like to talk a lot, which leads one to believe this place is "buzzing." So why is it not? Probably because the service is so bad that the waiters don't know what Cholula is. They act nice but don't come by often, which is customary in a normal American restaurant.
Our appetizer, the cowboy queso, was up to the task as a mix of black beans, queso and guacamole served to appease my taste buds for a limited time. Queso and guacamole are commonly good together, and the addition of black beans added a necessary body to the dish. The chips were small and broken, but if your friend doesn't care about germs then it's ok to accidentally put your fingers in.
The crappy part of the meal started immediately after. My friend ordered biscuits with eggs. The biscuits came out dry and hard. When you cook a biscuit, it's not a good thing to then continually heat and reheat it multiple times, like what's done at Kinsolving or Jester 2nd floor on the university campus. Yet, Kerbey managed to pass off these cafeteria biscuits as edible. It's unbelievable to think that I could get unlimited plates of Kerbey's biscuits and eggs at what was once the worst-rated university cafeteria in the country for 1/3 of the price.
I ordered migas and French toast. They made the mistake of using their already-stale tortilla chips instead of the customary slightly-oiled corn tortilla slices. Other than that, they successfully made diner-style scrambled eggs with pico de gallo and cheese. Once their salsa (because they "have no Cholula") was added, it was a decent migas dish. The French toast was then supposed to complement the dish. There were three main problems:
- the bread was stale,
- the eggs were old when the bread was dipped,
- the French toast was reheated, probably twice, AND
- instead of incorporating the cinnamon into the egg batter, the cinnamon was caked (note: caked, not sprinkled) onto the toast).
Thanks for doing everything possible to ruin French toast. It was so bad I had one bite and said "never again."
Needless to say, we just paid with enough cash to get out of that place ASAP. The worst bread products I've ever tasted. The only reason for the 2nd star is the cowboy queso; the rest of it is so bad you shouldn't order a single entree.
