Great place to stop if in Louisville.
This is a great little museum, well organized and interesting to tour. It really gives you a good feel for horse racing and the Kentucky Derby.
Let me preface this by saying that I'm not into horse racing. I've actually never even seen a horse race but after visiting this museum I am so excited about horse racing! This was very informative and interactive. I even was able to take a behind the scenes tour where I got to see the jockey locker room, press room, owner's suites...it was amazing. So, here are my two favorite facts I learned.
1. They bury the racehorses with their heads (smarts), hearts (courage), hooves (speed) and cremate the rest of the body.
2. The winning jockey of the first Kentucky Derby was a black man.
This was a really cool museum. You definitely get the feel of horse racing here and you will be exposed to the history as well. You don't need to be into horse racing to enjoy this place. You can brush up on all of the past champs and the history of racing. There was also a touching monument to fallen champion Barbaro.
I'm only vaguely familiar with horse racing but I really enjoyed the Derby Museum. It really takes you into the life of the sport. The Churchill Downs tour was even better. The tour guides give a really thorough background on the history of the Derby and lets you have an opportunity to go into the grandstands. I'd highly recommend visiting if you are anywhere near Louisville.
Fantastic museum detailing the history of Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby. We arrived on a cold January afternoon to see check out this place. The museum is very well done and provides information about the history of the race, information on raising thoroughbred horses. We spent a few hours reading the various exhibits and also watched a film. My only qualm is that the museum was very expensive ($12.00 per person admission) and almost deterred us.
