    Ugh.

This night started out bad and only got worse, as we made the unwise decision to drag the kids out to a Japanese place for dinner.  We were meeting my sister, who was getting married at the Mauna Lani Resort 2 days later, and this was sort of the informal "welcome" dinner for everyone who'd already arrived.  It was our second night on the Island, and our kids were still off time-wise, hungry and cranky, since it was 9pm our time, and we still hadn't had dinner.

My sister had given us 6:15 as the meeting time, but came to find out that she'd meant that for those who were staying at the hotel (we were not) to meet in the lobby and then WALK over to Kenichi, which was a good 10-15 mins away (read: eating some time after 7 p.m.)

Anyway, the restaurant was initially accommodating, seating us and getting us some water and stuff while we waited for the rest of the party to arrive.  We decided not to order any food, since if the kids ate right away, they'd be done and wanting to get down and run around by the time everyone got there.

Our waitress sympathized with us immediately, telling us she had kids of her own and knew how difficult it is to take them out, especially when their time is all out of whack.  I should say too that my sister, when telling us she expected we'd be there, described this place as "kid friendly," and it was really anything but.

That was the last we heard from our waitress.

After everyone arrived and was seated, she proceeded to take their drink orders and never returned to get the kids' orders, so there we sat, now close to an hour after we arrived, with no food, and the kids were going formally apeshit.  My husband finally got up and ran downstairs to the overpriced market to get them some crackers to try to hold them over.

I finally got up and slide tackled one of the other servers (I didn't even see ours anywhere) and asked him to get us some chicken and rice, and he obliged.  Then when dinner orders were being taken, my husband was still gone at the store, and I asked her to come back and get his at the end, and she never did, so everyone's food arrived, and he still hadn't even ordered.

They were just lousy at coordinating everything, and good at antagonizing everyone and making a bad situation worse. I think that if she could have come right back and gotten the kids' order for food and kept her promise to return for my husband's order, I'd have been ok, but the combination of difficult food choices for the kids and totally lackluster and inattentive service just made me want to scratch their eyes out.

Good but a little pricey for the quality.  Service was attentive and fast.  Excellent fried ice cream dessert.  Fresh and tasty fish.  Would be 4 stars if prices were 10-20% less, as that is where their value is.
