"Buying a mattress can be a nightmare..." - 2007 Consumer Buying Guide.

Who would've thought? I certainly didn't until it was time for us to buy a new mattress. It's not something you purchase often so I had no idea how much politics goes into it!

We weren't in a rush...just looking to buy an extra mattress for our place. We spent one whole Saturday going from store to store to store. I didn't mind that but what I didn't realize was how mentally draining it was because of all the bargaining you had to do with the sales people! It wasn't some $50 item that you could return if you weren't satisfied with it after you got home - it would be at least $1000 for what we wanted. The sales people we dealt with were pretty sleazy and some were even rude, telling us that the price on the display was the price we had to pay (which is NEVER the case for those chain stores!). By the time we went home that day, I was in a bad mood and had a massive headache. I didn't want to deal with mattress shopping EVER AGAIN.

Two weeks later, my husband suggested we visit Keetsa.
"What's that?" I asked.
"A new mattress store in SF" he replied.
Silence.
"Do we have to? I don't have the energy nor patience to deal with that this weekend..." I pleaded.
Luckily he convinced me to check it out and I am so glad we did!

The salesperson, Chris, was very informative upon finding out we weren't familiar with their company. I never felt that he was pushy in anyway and he even told me, "if you can't feel the difference, don't pay the extra cash for the more expensive mattress." Wow! Most salespeople would give you the whole "you spend 1/3 of your life sleeping in bed so why not get the best you can afford - you deserve it" speech.

After about 30 minutes, we decided to go with The Keetsa Cloud and bought it on the spot! We also purchased the mattress cover (that keeps dust mites out) and the frame that goes beneath it.  I loved how Keetsa mattresses are all set at a low price and that we did not have to play the bargaining game and still walk away wondering if we got ripped off. They had two guys wheel out our purchase and load everything into the car for us! They were careful when moving and very friendly. We left Keetsa with the rest of the day free to do whatever we pleased because they made it so easy!

We had such a positive and pleasant experience shopping at Keetsa. We felt that the money was well spent not only because of the wonderful mattress but also because of the fantastic customer service. I even emailed all my friends and family to let them know about Keetsa!

Ahhh Keetsa.  If there was ever such a thing as a Zen mattress shopping experience, Keetsa has created it.  Simple and straightforward - a handful of mattresses to try out, free green tea (ready-to-sip AND take-a-box-home), and friendly and knowledgeable sales folks.

The mattresses themselves are stellar, offering foam or spring cores, with memory foam tops.  The company is eco-friendly, expanding the Zen of it all, and their vacuum packaging enables the mattress to fit in a box for easy transporting.

Andy and his team are great, very passionate about their products and go the extra mile.

We went with the Tea Leaf Supreme and I've been sleeping soundly ever since...all is right with the world...now if only Sarah Palin would go away, all would be Zen indeed....

Alright...so I've had my Keetsa mattress for a couple months now...and it's amazing! So, I bought the package deal with the Tea Leaf Classic Mattress, Tea Leaf Traditional Pillow, the Bamboo sheet set, and the mattress and pillow protectors...yep...and they're awesome. Seriously, the bamboo sheet set is incredibly soft, basically about 100 times better than any sheets I've ever owned.

I had been waiting for a while to see if any problems came up before writing a review, but I've had absolutely none. I went into the store once to make a decision and then came back a while later to buy the mattress. I spoke to Chris both times, who is mondo cool, and he answered all my questions and gave me all the time I needed to make sure I found the right one. Never any pressure to look at or buy anything....awesome! Guess that's it...all's well with the world...ok, so maybe not the world...but my mattress is great! hoo-haa!

p.s. I might have trusted Chris a little more had he not been forced to get a hair cut. I mean, this is san francisco..and an eco-friendly store.. where's the hippie with long hair? hahahaha (inside joke)

We were recently looking to buy a new mattress and a co-worker of mine recommended Keetsa. My initial assessment of the business suggested their products may appease my sensibilities, so Alex and I went to their store and laid down on all the beds. We decided we liked the Tea Leaf Supreme, a memory foam mattress with a foam core (rather than coil spring). We had previously been considering a Tempurpedic, so this was a good alternative. We were hesitant due to the horrendous off-gassing of memory foam mattresses.

After laying on the beds, we went home and I did a fair amount of research on Keetsa and came to find that all these claims of them being "green/organic" are only partially true. While they do use some natural products during the manufacturing process (such as substituting 12% castor bean oil in the production of the foam), 88% is still petroleum based. I was also told by a sales rep that these beds "don't off-gass at all". I questioned him since I had read several reviews by people complaining of the off-gassing produced by the Keetsa memory foam, but he insisted no off-gassing whatsoever would occur.

So we purchased our Tea Leaf Supreme in a queen. We got it home and it immediately stunk up the room with a nasty chemical smell. We left it in the extra bedroom to air out (fans on, windows open) for 2 days and while it didn't off-gass nearly as much as a Tempurpedic, I still found the fumes to be bothersome enough where I didn't want to sleep on it for the first few nights.

Normally this wouldn't be alarning due to the nature of the original materials used in the construction of this bed. However, I find it a little disturbing that their sales associates tell people that these beds don't off-gas at all, which is a complete lie and could cause real problems for more sensitive people.

So why the 4 star review? The service was great and I really like the bed, even though it still stinks enough to bug me (I can still smell it through the dust mite cover and two sheets). I haven't quite gotten used to the feel of the bed yet since we have only slept on it for 2 nights, but when I wake up I don't feel like an achey 90 year old woman.

I would have given them 5 stars had the rep not given me misleading information. However I still would have bought the bed had he told me the truth. I don't expect some uber-green miracle bed built by the hands of locally-grown leprechauns who receive health insurance and double time on Mondays, Tuesday and Wednesdays, the covers woven from renewable, humanely harvested unicorn hair.

When you're waking up at different hours in the night and morning when you should be sound asleep, it's time to get a new mattress. I was tossing and turning and keeping myself awake. After doing a little bit of research, I decided that it was time to invest in memory foam or something of the Tempurpedic variety.

The experience in the Keetsa store on 9th went quite smoothly. We parked on Folsom [meterless 1-hour parking most days] and spent an hour or so testing out the different mattresses. We were told to try napping on the mattresses for about fifteen minutes for the full effect. When I was set on buying something, it didn't cost the usual arm, leg, and spleen that other mattress stores usually ask for. Just an arm and a half. I also picked up a comfort layer for another uncomfortable bed at home too.

While there, we also sampled the Keetsa green tea and took some to go. All the pieces purchased fit into the Prius, and I was sleeping on a new mattress in no time. Well, "in no time" means the time it takes to get all the boxes out of the car and into the elevator, down the hall and into the apartment, and then to open the box, roll out the mattress and let it air out.

So far, I'm noticing the difference. I'm getting more restful sleep. I wake up feeling awake and well-rested. So my 600th review goes to you, Keetsa!

I'm going through the reviews now and reading about free pillows. We didn't get free pillows. :-( In fact ,we bought the bed platform, two pillows, a mattress protector, and four pillow protectors [two come in a pack] on top of the mattress and comfort layer...

[UPDATE: Andy, SF store manager, responded fairly quickly to this review. While he didn't have to send 'em, pillows are coming in the mail!]

4.5 stars - will update in a few months with a report on mattress status!

These guys are awesome! I was there last Friday picking up my new mattress..and was in and out within a half hour. I was a bit concerned about whether I would be able to fit a queen size into the back of my car...and a super nice patron even offered to help me drive it to my place!
Luckily Andy was able to squeeze the package int the back of my car. The box itself has wheels so it was not too difficult for me to get it into my place and set it up.
I love my new mattress!

Buying a new mattress can be overwhelming and costly. Keetsa helped me avoid both of these problems.

I walked into the store at 5pm on a Tuesday and walked out by 5:45 with one of the most comfortable mattresses I've ever slept on. I have to thank Andy, my salesperson, and the Keetsa product line for that. I was within my budget and didn't feel overwhelmed by the whole process.

Eco-friendly, comfortable, affordable and easy to take home in the back of a VW Jetta. Couldn't ask for more.

Organic mattress has arrived: made of castrol bean oil, green tea extract, and natural ingredients.  I almost want to ask if they're eatable.

I had the best shopping experience to get my new mattress here.  This is my first and last stop in finding a new mattress.  Chris was incredibly helpful and gave me lots of useful information.  Their products are thoughtful and eco-friendly.  I can't believe that a king size mattress can fit into a paper box that resembles a hand carry, with attached handle and a pair of wheels.  "Load it to your regular size car and off you go!"

I can't wait to lay on my new bed now.  Chris told me it'll take 1-3 days for the foam to pop up in its normal shape (because of the vacuum packaging).  Yes, love it!

Tip: Small discounts are offered if you are ok with little holes on the mattress, or some package defect.

ATTENTION:  DON'T BUY ANYTHING *DIRECTLY* FROM KEETSA UNLESS YOU LIKE WASTING MONEY

My visit to keetsa's 9th st. soma store began with parking torture.  There's no lot, and the surrounding meters are $1.50 / 30 minutes, with a 30 minute max.  Thus, either don't drive, or be ready to interrupt your mattress testing to feed the meter, or wrap up biz in less than 30 minutes.

The mattresses themselves are all fine, and your choice probably depends on whether you prefer soft or firm.  I felt equally comfortable on the cheapy and the $2K, the only difference being the exterior fabric.  Consider bringing a sheet to eliminate that variable and to protect against skank.

Firm mattresses for me, so I bought the cheapest, the keetsa plus.  Here's the part that sucks:  I paid $600 for a queen (the store discounts the website's prices by 10%), plus $56 of sweet SF tax.

For $106 dollars less (more for the pricier mattresses) you should buy from one of the sites that keetsa's own page endorses.  E.g. http://ivgstores.com and http://econsciousmarke...  Both sell the same mattress for $550 with free shipping and zero tax.  ivgstores even throws in a free pillow.  Thus, don't get jacked like I did--- buy elsewhere!!!

I've now had my mattress for 4-5 months so I feel like it's now time to review...

First of all, I chose Keetsa after reading Yelp reviews and being so frustrated going to the typical mattress showrooms - each time they were lowering the price, I felt like this was a purchase I was definitely going to get screwed on. When I saw there was just one fixed price at Keetsa for each type of mattress, I was sold on going to check it out.

The salespeople were awesome. Never once did I feel a pressure to buy. I ended up going with a Tea Leaf Supreme because I liked that there were no coils. It was much more firm than I was used to but I just told myself it was a matter of time before my body would get used to it. But it really didn't.

That's when I called Andy. He told me they could sell me the pillow-top at a discounted price because it was that important that I be happy with my purchase.

Well, the pillow-top came in yesterday and I couldn't wait to get it home. I put it on and I can't even describe how amazing my sleep was last night. I even slept in today instead of going to work out because I was THAT comfortable. So I guess I should say 'Buyer Beware!!!! You may never want to get out of bed with the Tea Leaf Supreme + Pillow-top combo!!!'

There is nothing like a good night sleep and when my old mattress died, I wasn't sleeping anymore. I needed a new mattress and decided to check out Keetsa. I was pleasantly surprised with the low pressure sales staff and how comfortable the mattresses felt. After trying different mattresses out we decided to buy the Tea Leaf Dream.

I've had the mattress for 2 weeks now and I'm sleeping well.  Now my only problem is waking up and getting out of bed in the morning because it's so comfortable.

Hi,

I've had my Keetsa mattress for about six months and it still feels brand new.  I loved their recycled workmanship- everything is top quality and good for the environment!  We were able to purchase two queen size beds (as they were rolled up), stuff them into the back of my wagon and drive home with them that evening.  The bed is just as if not more comfortable than my girlfriend's who purchased a full memory foam mattress.  I went with the combo memory foam and spring.  Good engineering!

So happy with my purchase and overall experience I don't even know where to start.  First let me say THANK YOU Keetsa for no more restless nights on a crummy mattress!

I was drawn to the place due to the overwhelming amount of great Yelps, next after researching how innovative they are with the design and fabrication of their mattresses, they are 100% eco-friendly and put the environment to the forefront of their design structure.  (Seriously incredible-  check their site for more details).  Lastly, when I went in I did not get a pushy salesman trying to cram a mattress down my throat (like the others I checked out prior to my visit).

I was pleasantly greeted and offered their trademark (organic green tea) upon entering,  and then discussed my sleeping style to determine what mattresses would be a good fit.  I was then instructed to nap on each one for about 15 minutes to see what felt best.  No problem right?  Wrong!  They all felt amazing.   Took a while, but I fell hard for the Tea Leaf Classic, and I've yet to regret my choice.

Delivery wasn't too difficult.  They ship UPS so you have to ensure you are home for the day it is expected to arrive, however they are somehow magically able to fit the mattresses compressed into a box that would fit in the trunk of a regular sized car, should you have that as an option to drive it home yourself.  No need for a box spring here.  Read their site to find out why...  http://www.keetsa.com

Thanks Chris for all your help!  I'll be back for pillows!

UPDATE: I have had my mattress for almost a week now and I struggle to get out of it in the morning. Not because I'm tired but because the bed is so comfortable it keeps me in there...it won't let me leave. Go buy a Keetsa now.

OK, so I just bought my Keetsa Cloud queen mattress today so this review is not for the quality of the actual mattress since I haven't actually slept on it yet. I will revise this review after a few times of slumber. This review is for the welcoming and unintimidating service.

Chris was my sales guy and he was very friendly and very helpful and actually was pushing me to get the cheaper mattress which is a coil mattress. I opted to go with the memory foam. Yeah it cost more but worth it. I figured I'd slept on coil beds my entire life. Why not upgrade?

Another bonus is that Keetsa is an eco-friendly mattress company. At least I know I'm buying a green product. Like I said before. I'll revise this review later with more of a review of the actual feel and comfort of the bed.

Once upon a time, ignorance was bliss.  And then you make the mistake or fortune of walking into a Keetsa store only to discover what a POS mattress you've been sleeping on the last decade plus of your life.

If you've ever been mattress shopping at a chain store, you might agree it's a bit like hunting for that new cologne--after test driving fifteen they all start to feel the same, but all dreams eventually led me back to Keetsa two days later.  So like Miss Goldilocks, I hopped from this mattress to that mattress and back and forth again, rolling this way and that way, horizontally, diagonally, spread eagle:  this one's too firm, that one's too soft, this one's too hot...oh but this one's juuuust right.

Zzzzzzzzzzz...

"Good morning, would you like some freshly steeped complimentary loose leaf green tea?"

While Keetsa's eco-friendl(ier) line includes a few mattresses incorporating traditional coil technology, I believe their claim to fame is the memory foam versions, more specifically, the Tea Leaf Supreme.  Supreme, you say?  If you ask me, I thought it sounded more like the name of a grande burrito or a  1/2 lb. burger, but who cares when it just feels so, so good.  I deliberated for hours between the Classic and the Supreme and eventually chose the memory foam.  The Classic makes you feel suspended while the Supreme is like laying in quicksand--then Mr. Sandman takes you away.

I must have spent 3 hours in there with Chris and Andy and not once did they glance at their watch.  So within a matter of numerous naps, I found myself whistling the entire way home knowing I saved cash on delivery fees had I purchased a Simmons instead of the queen size mattress-in-a-box-on-wheels I was toting in the backseat of my car.  In general, what an enjoyable experience, but some helpful advice?  The deceiving  handle "screwed" into the top of the (cardboard) box isn't exactly functional.  Prepare yourself for drama if the box tears open.  Some R&D, please.

Okay, it's been 3 months since my 1st review, and I just wanted to say, I crawl into bed and still drool like Homer Simpson. My mattress is holding up and feels great.  Oh, and I found useful purposes for many of the packaging products.

Grey paper - comes with the mattress as protective lining; great for flooring covering when I painted my rooms, still have it.

Pillow boxes; now hold photos that I'm currently scanning

Body Pillow box; now holds Xmas ornaments, and put back into larger rolling Mattress Box, also holding Xmas goods in storage.

You can't wrong with Keetsa!

A very pleasant buying experience.  A very comfortable bed!

We went all over town trying the other mattress places, only to be convinced that all products were overpriced, all salespeople are sleazy and the act of buying a bed is just a giant hassle.

A friend suggested Keetsa.  What a great tip!  No hassles, great prices, great service.  Highly recommended.

A really simple, low key, and different mattress buying experience. This was my first foray into adult realm of bedding purchases, the one where i decided that it's time to move up a step from old futons and $50 cl specials. Chris was really low pressure, answered all my questions, didn't try to upsell at all.  A queen size bed and the steel frame both fit in my 94 Jetta with room to spare. It's two steps to set up from home too. Really brilliant packaging: the steel frame is two pieces which are preassembled and fold, the bed is packed in a spiral which magically inflates when you cut the tape, and the cardboard box you take it away in has wheels on the bottom.

The bonus, of course, is that the beds are not full of long chains of petroleum molecules, and, unusually for 'organic' products, priced lower than your average mattress store. You can't bargain with them at Keetsa,  but at the same time you don't really need to.  Great people and great product=great shopping experience.

We purchased our first (real) mattress in SF from Keetsa! It was shortly after the store opened, and fun to be in on the new-ness.

It was a really delightful experience, staff was super nice, very helpful, and awesomely patient.

We finally decided that the Keetsa Pillow Soft fit our taste and budget best. Wait, what, we can take it home today? In a box? Just the two of us? No delivery fees? Woo-hoo!

Unboxing the thing was pretty fun. It exploded out of the packaging in a very amusing way. The green tea/new unbleached canvas smell is pretty strong at first- glad we were able to let it air out for a while before sleeping on it.

Overall very happy with the purchase, good price, great service, great product.

Four stars for the sales experience. I can't give a 5th star because I haven't had the mattress that long. I don't get these Yelpers sometimes. OK, I never get these Yelpers.

For retailers of long-lifespan items (mattresses, cars, etc.), Yelp needs to separate reviews of sales experience from reviews of purchased product (after some reasonable amount of time). Otherwise the stars just don't mean anything.

Yet more Yelp lemmingdom: sales are low-key yet available (we were helped by Andy).

Non-lemmingdom follows:

The window decorations have lots of cool kitschy things made of broken computer keyboards. Cool!

The mattress comes in a convenient box with wheels. Getting them out of a car can be a one-man job, and I only weigh a buck-thirty, with wet hair. But if you live in a building with stairs and no elevator, I feel sorry for you. These suckers are HEAVY.

No one else here mentions the "Keetsa care" that Andy offered to sell us. He wasn't very pushy about it, so that means one or more of a few different things: (1) Keetsa doesn't make much commission on this affiliate reselling of extended warranty (the service is actually provided by http://SleepTrust.com), or (2) Andy is just a lazy bum sales guy, because (3) these mattresses sell themselves.

Let's go with (1). Joe A. - no need to fire Andy, yet. And if (3) is true, I want to open a store of my own!

"Keetsa care" is an extended warranty and service plan for your mattress. The knee-jerk reaction to extended warranties is: "a $10 warranty plan on a $15 land-line phone at Best Buy? No-brainer, no, thanks.

But for my top-of-the-line $2000 "Tea Leaf Dream", let's crunch some numbers:

* Return: $100 recycling fee plus 15% return fee = $400 to end up with nothing. Let's assume that the markup on recycling and return is negligible, meaning that Keetsa doesn't want people to return their mattresses because it isn't that profitable.

* Keetsa care: $129 ($59.99 for queen-sized mattress protector, plus $70 for warranty and service). If you return your mattress, the return and recycling fee are covered. I don't care about the mattress protector because I'm not allergic to dust mites, but wasn't offered a protector-less service option. You extend your "comfort exchange" window from 90 days to 1 year, and 10-year coverage for, among other things, "accidental rips, tears, and burns". I'm not that strong, I don't cry, and I don't smoke. So let's just consider Keetsa care as an insurance policy for a "comfort exchange".

Compared with a $400 return price tag, the $129 Keetsa care is priced to assume that my odds of liking the mattress are about 68%. That's dismal!

Subtract out the mattress protector, and the $70 Keetsa care is priced for an 83% satisfaction rate. Getting better. That's OK for a casual restaurant, but still sounds like a worse number than for a $2000 TV purchase.

We can pad that number higher to account for the extra services being provided (maybe people need insurance against rips, tears, and burns), bringing us up to a 90% satisfaction rate. OK. Still not a number you want to hear for, say, $2000 LASIK surgery, but then again, this isn't eye surgery.

And it makes me feel optimistic that I will be able to give Keetsa that 5th star.

* Update * the smell went away after two weeks, and the bed is still comfy.

There comes a point in a man's life, when a futon will no longer do. Friends mock you, potential partners scorn you, the cat gives you odd looks. A year ago, I've reached that point. It was time to buy a real bed.

Bed frame? Easy! There's that beautiful one at DWR. And it was beautiful, and it was 2 grand, and I went to Ikea.

Mattress? Not so easy. There are questions of comfort.
Firmness. Bounciness. Logistics. Sexability. Money.

Then friends told me about Keetsa.
Green tea!
Natural!
Local!
Made from recycled love and puppies!

Hippie freaks.
I just want a mattress, if I want to drink green tea, I can brew some.
So, Ikea, here I come.
Ikea was a bust, and most local stores had marginal reviews. Well. I guess it can't hurt to go to the hippie place.

It didn't.
After 1 hour, I found my mattress, and a few days later I had a great mattress. Appropriately comfortable, firm, bouncy, sexable and at a reasonable price.

Why am I happy?
- It was in the city; no shipping, come, try, grab, go.
- I got the cheapest model, and for the price, it was the most comfy mattress I tried.
- The packaging is fucking brilliant. It fits into the back seat. It has wheels. It's relatively easy to open. Watching it "expand" is a great fun for one and all.
- 9 months later, I'm still happy.
- Buying was stupid easy. Here's $, here's mattress. Have at.
- It smelled nothing like green tea. Yay.

What could have be better:
- If the sales guys would bugger off until called for.
- Not really fond of the memory foam mattresses. I am a fan of firm and bouncy and memory foam is neither.
- Enviro-friendly factor is overplayed. Polyurethane and memory foam are not environmentally friendly. Sorry.
- If I was smarter and went here first, rather than wasting time at Ikea and other mattress stores.
- In all honesty the complaints are fairly minor.

We bought the Tea Leaf Supreme and L-O-V-E it. It's very comfortable and every night we just can't wait to go to bed.

Although their product is not 100% green it's more environmentally friendly than the Sealy Select Comfort piece of crap you had before (does Sealy even have an eco-conscience??? Must investigate further).

We were warned the mattress would have a funny odor for the first few weeks or so. Initially it was strong, but it disappeared quickly.

We are happy to support Keetsa's products and philosophy. Andy was amazing on both our visits. The customer service is EXCELLENT!  There was no pressure to buy and we frolicked on the mattresses until we were confident in our selection.

The packaging is genius (except for the stupid little useless handle which we were also warned about). We rolled our king size right to the car and were off!

We'd love to give Keetsa (and Andy) some more business.

I shopped around for a couple of weeks and this was by far my favorite spot.
Nice, low key sales approach, good prices and a super comfortable mattress. I ended up going with the Tea Leaf Classic.
What else do you need out of the experience?
Oh and a 20-year warranty on a bed that was much cheaper than comparable brand names at Sleep Train.

I also tried Dirt Cheap and liked their selection but at the end of the day I felt better about buying from a place that backs their product up with a warranty. At the same time the prices were comparable.

As a bonus the mattress comes compressed into a box which fit in the back of my 2-door VW GTI and I was able to drag it up 3 flights of stairs by myself (although it was definitely a good workout, I'd recommend finding someone to help you with this part).

I've now had the mattress for about a week and a half and I love it.
I'd definitely recommend this place.

No pressure sale.

l know what l like to sleep on so l asked for it just after
being shown the ''lowest'' price  model. Okay so that
pushed the price up. Still - l got a great mattress and
a cover. Well, l actually got 2 covers since the zipper
on the first cover malfunctioned and l couldn't get it
off of the mattress and Andy suggested that l simply
keep it and he'd supply me with another to compensate.
l bought my Keetsa over a year ago now when Joe said,
"... hurry home and yelp us and you can be #4o." Alas, l
am not # 4o. I waited until l could give a review based on
experience with this product.
ALL's l can say is..."l sleep well every single night, in bliss"
of course l slept well before my Keetsa too, but l was beginning
to experience postural aches upon awakening then, too.
Now just blissful sleep and my body loves how it feels the morning after.
Thanks Joe.

about a year ago and a half ago i got my degree got a good job and the first thing i had planned to do with my first pay check was get rid of the old mattress and get a good one.  searching online i got it down to two choices. the keetsa or foamworks on howard.  i went to keetsa first and walk out with the the keetsa plus mattress right then.
i was very impressed with their store, the niceness of the guy selling, the overall greenish of the product.  so i was very happy with my purchase. until about a week later when i was waking up with horrible back aches, like the ones they ask you at the doctor rate your pain between one and ten, 15 i'd say. the mattress was not as green as they told me: memory foam is not green.
went back to the store, something about having to wait a month because the body will warm up to the mattress in about that time, so i had to endure a month of back pain, sometime worse than others, but at the end of the 3rd week i could not take it anymore and brought the mattress back, they told me it is maybe too soft and exchange it for a pillow soft.  which is not soft at all. at first i wasnt sure because i went in to do a return, but i understood then that i could come back and return the second mattress if it didnt work. i had to pay a $100.00 to cover the cost of processing the 3 week used mattress and down i went with the second one, exited that i was going to see it pop out of the plastic bag for a second time.  it wasnt that exited this time around though.
two weeks after the second mattress i came in to the store again to tell them that im still experiencing horrible back aches and i would like to return the mattress, they tell me not possible because you could only exchange once without the option of returning.  but that is not what i was told.  or what i was not led to beleive, or what my mind didnt want to hear.
since i didnt get to return this mattress and my good job is good but not buy a new mattress every month good. i had to stick with the mattress i got.  it has been a little over a year with it, and have to say it has gotten a bit better, although when i plan to stay 12 hours in bed just for the sake of it, my plans get diverted by my back telling me i have to get up and stretch.
im saving money for a new mattress only one year after i bought the last one, but you have to do what you have to do.
the overall experience deserve three stars maybe less, but im giving them those because when i first went in i didnt feel pressured or pushed to buy anything, they were very informative and knowledgeable about their product, and while trying mattresses i accidentally took a nap and no one was bothered by it. i think they were even asking people to lower their voices cause i was napping. but who knows.
when i bought the first mattress they offered me the bundle with consisted of mattress, pillows, cases etc. a good deal, but i found that those pillows dont work for me and only use them for guests.
so in a nutshell, good mattresses if you are young and hip with out back problems.  if you have back problems, which mine where not as bad before my keetsa purchase, probably not a good item to buy.

Keetsa is a very different type of mattress operation. I have never purchased a mattress before outside of the Ikea world - and was not looking forward to experiencing any mattress store, having heard they are on-par or worse than car dealerships (of that I have not dealt with either, and my OCD, and typically filled with high anxiety self would not be thrilled).

Anyhow, Keetsa starts with a very informative website - all prices listed right there in plain english. So, I knew what I wanted. I went into the store and Joe pointed me to the Keetsa Pillow Soft and then the Tea Leaf Classic. I wanted the pillow soft because it was cheaper but also truly found it was more comfortable. And there was no negotiation, it was simply 'Great, let's get it.' Very comfortable and quick.

Getting it home is the funny part. It's nice and packed up to go, but my stubborn self didn't bother to ask for a friend to help - and while I got it in my apartment alone just fine, one more body would have helped. Once I got it in, I do recommend reading the directions carefully. I'm one of those guys who just jumps in and assumes I know what to do, and it says to put the mattress down where it will be. I just attempted to open it vertically on the side of the bedframe, and whoa, did it explode open like a wild animal! I wrangled it in, and got it on the bed, but yeah, be careful. Follow instructions!

And sleeping on it has been great. It is comfortable and a big size. Someday I wish that I could get that kind of comfort while on a plane!

Keetsa has low-pressure service and is affordable- which is why they have three stars.

They have good intentions, have made a good start in being less harmful in some of their production (12% castor bean oil-based mattress for example) , and - based on the factors listed above - are far, far superior to the mattresses you'll find at Macy's .

However, we did a lot of mattress research before buying ours last year and gave greater weight to factors including minimal environmental impact, minimal chemicals/petroleum used, and  supporting a US- or Canada--based manufacturer.

Stopping in at Keetsa and meeting their friendly sales staff was an enjoyable experience. But these mattresses are still 88% petroleum-based and, being made in and shipped from China, they have an impact on the American labor market & on the environment when shipping their products across the Pacific.

We ended up going with a natural latex organic mattress - not a petroleum-based one. More expensive, but we plan to use it for decades. (It's the firm natural latex mattress from Oasis. http://www.ahappyplane...)

I've been sleeping like a dream since.

The NYT also had an interesting article on mattresses yesterday:

http://www.nytimes.com...

I would advise people to do their research and weigh the factors carefully. Keetsa is definitely a good idea for many people - it just wasn't what we were looking for.

I needed to buy a Mattress last September. At first, I went to "the triumverate" over on Van Ness. It was a horrible experience at all three places. I'd read about Keetsa, but I wasn't sure how I felt about it.

But I figured I'd stop by and check it out. Well, I have to say, they get an A++ from me on customer service. As most people know, and as I certainly experienced at the big 3, mattress shopping is an abysmal, time-sucking experience. After my experiences there, I had a lot of coffee and grit my teeth before I walked in. A fellow Chris was working. He greeted me in a fairly common salesperson-eager sort of way, and I was immediately ready to be annoyed, but after the greeting, and inviting to try things out, he went back to what he was doing.

I started laying on the mattresses. I really like the scent of the mattresses, and of the store. Some people have described it as "chemically" but I didn't find that. Occasionally, Chris would come over and chat idly, about the mattress, or just about things in general. I told him my horror stories at the other mattress place, and he said that he would try to do a better job.

I wasn't really ready to buy a mattress that day, so I let him know. He didn't pressure me *at all* with "today-only" deals or any other such nonsense. He gave me his card and a pamphlet and a few packets of green tea (which was not half bad - and I'm a tea snob).

The experience was good enough that I came back again, this time with a partner, and a car to transport the mattress. I laid on two of the lower-end beds, the Keetsa Plus and the Keetsa Cloud. I really liked the Cloud. In the end, I went with the lower cost Plus because I found it extremely comfortable, and it was a few hundred bucks cheaper. But also, the Cloud was actually too comfortable, and that scared me. As I was laying in it, when I sat back up, it felt as if invisible tendrils were gently pulling me back down into the bed to sleep. I have a LOT of trouble getting up in the morning, and I was afraid this would not help.

The fact that I brought home a queen-size mattress in a standard 4-door sedan is also quite nice.

6 months later, I am very satisfied with my choice. Every evening, getting into bed is an absolute joy. Of course I can't comment on the long-long term durability, but the 6th month check-in is a very positive one. I even find myself, on tough days at work, looking forward to coming home and laying in my bed -- it's definitely the most comfortable bed I've ever owned.

As an appendix to the customer service story -- I had a friend visiting in town from France. Since it was his first time in the city, I was showing him everything I could think of. I thought Keetsa was pretty unique, so I brought him in to show him. Well, Chris was working, and when he saw me (5 months later), he greeted me by name. I explained to him that I was just showing a visitor from abroad what Keetsa was. He was quite amenable to that, and invited us to lay on things all we wanted. I didn't get any tea this time though, bummer! ;-)

On a final note..

I see some reviews where people argue that they misrepresent themselves, or that the whole "green" thing is just a marketing scam, and deduct points because of that. Well, last time I checked, pretty much every action a business takes is done to further the business. So, within that context, Keetsa does a good job. And they certainly do make some obvious steps to improve the "green-ness" of their mattresses. So that works for me.

Could not be happier.

We went to Keetsa after discovering them here on Yelp.. after doing a bit of research, we definitely felt that they were the place for us and made our way to their show room. We were helped by Chris, who was wonderful. We simply told him the level of firmness that we liked, and he lead the way.  Usually sales people will lead you to the most expensive item in the show room.. so we were pleasantly surprised when our first "choice" was one of the most inexpensive mattresses in the store!

We tried a few, asked a lot of questions.. We never once felt like we were getting a sales pitch, being bullshitted or being forced to buy something we didn't way. It was seriously one of the most painless large-purchase sales experiences I have ever had. They even have free green tea for customers to help themselves to while they grab your (boxed!) mattress from the back.

We ended up buying a Queen Sized 'Pillow Soft'.. $650. I definitely DEFINITELY feel like this is a very very reasonable price. We were in and out of the store within 30 minutes! We've had the bed for about a week now, and I love it. It's medium firm, super comfortable, and I have been sleeping like a baby. I really could not be happier.

Oh-- and the best part?? The mattresses come in a box.. yes-- a BOX. And fit easily into the back seat of a regular sized car. The boxes even have wheels built into them so they are easy to get from your car, into your house and bedroom. Love it.

Affordable. Great sales people. Ecofriendly. High quality. Super comfortable. AND easy to transport. Could it get any better than this?!!

It took me a while to buy a mattress.  I did a fair amount of research and Yelp was a part of that.  Seems people liked this Keetsa place...It was the third stop of my mattress day, starting off at the more conventional places.  I have to admit, it was NOT love at first feel.  I tried every mattress repeatedly, with my friend for feedback, taking the suggested 5-10 minutes per mattress.   I didn't really dig the memory foam.  When you sit on it, there is no bounce, just sink.

I came back two weeks later and spent another hour in the place testing out mattresses. I went with the Cloud, as it felt better this time.  I got the mattress protector.  I am satisfied with my purchase.  I sleep well at night.  My ritual of reading for 5-10 minutes to let the mattress warm and form to my body is fun.

So here's the good and bad, as far as I see it:

Good:
Good value mattress (relative for a memory foam mattress)
Environmentally conscious
Friendly sales staff
Good tea

Bad:
The mattress has a smell to it that doesn't go away.  It's the first thing I notice when I come into my room.  At first I disliked it as I felt it smelled like petrochemicals.  Now, it feels more like a tea smell to me.

Pillows and sheets are pricey, although nice.  They get you if you accessorize.

No sales.

Sales staff REALLY pushes the memory foam, although in retrospect, I think this is because they really enjoy it themselves (the both stated to me that they own one themselves).

Overall, I'm still satisfied and it's been a few months.  Life is good, at least from a mattress perspective.

After a solid 3 months on our Keetsa, I can say that I'm glad we bought it, and I definitely love it.   It did soften up a very small amount which is actually welcome, as the cloud was definitely firm when we first laid on it.

I bought a mattress at Keetsa about six months ago and have been meaning to write a review ever since. This was hands down one of the best purchases I've ever made. The shopping process was stress-free, and I was able to get the boxed mattress home and unpacked alone (though it definitely would have been easier with a second set of hands). Sleeping on the mattress for the first time (and the second and third and fourth...) was so gratifying - I slept better, and I felt better when I woke. (It's so amazingly comfortable - I hate to get out of bed!) And I love that my mattress doesn't have a bunch of chemicals in it.

This review is for the actual mattress, as I have never been to the store.
I purchased my mattress at The Natural Mattress Store in San Rafael (Marin). They were awsome there, and this is what I got.....

I purchased an Eastern King, Keetsa. It was one  of the more expensive Keetsa's (even though they all felt nice) but I figure that sleep and the health benefits are worth it.

When you buy a Keetsa, even a Eastern King, they come in a nice box that can fit in a hatchback of a car, and some larger car trunks. It comes in a cute little box, with wheels on it. Roll it into the room you want, pull it out, and lay on your bed frame. Then you cut the plastic on it, and it minutes the bed inflates to its true size and feel. It really is amazing how they can do that. It is so convenient, and creative. Gone are the days of white glove service for a hundred plus dollars for a nice mattress to be delivered.

I have had a great night sleep, day after day, and I know that it has honestly changed my days into being more productive, and positive.

Thanks again  guys, and I will certainly be back in the future if I need to fill a room for a new bed.

Okay, so my review may be biased a teeny bit because somehow I've got Chris at Keetsa in debt to me for two ice cream sundaes. I can't explain how that happened (mostly because I'm not sure myself) but take my word for it. Or his word. He's not going to lie, plus now I have it in writing. My writing, but whatever.

I've been to Keetsa three times.

The first time, my mattress had just been ruined by a puddle of water that made its way from my roof, through my ceiling, into my mattress. I was hobo-ing it up and dragged a friend in with me. We left in my car with HER mattress! This was supposed to be MY shopping trip! Andy and Chris were both super helpful, and I knew I'd be back soon.

Trial 2: A different friend (learned my lesson the first time). Decided on the bed I'd been lying on the first time around (the Keetsa Plus--I'm a basics kind of girl). Chris helped us get the mattress (and the platform) into the car. This is when the ice cream sundae came in, but like I said, I can't explain it.
*Note: it's super awesome that the mattress is in a box, but it doesn't mean the mattress isn't SUPER HEAVY. Bring a strong friend along. For the record, I don't count as a "strong friend." *

Trial 3: In all the excitement about mattresses, cars, and ice cream sundaes, I forgot to get my extra pillow case from Chris. I went back in the next day and picked it up from Andy, who somehow remembered me from the week and a half before that. The next day, Chris was back at work and he called me to apologize for forgetting the pillow case. I think this is where the second ice cream sundae came in. But the first one? Magic. That's my best guess.

After all that, my mattress is comfortable, the bamboo sheets are soft, and I'm back to sleeping in my leak-free bedroom. Life is good.

oh, if only every retail salesperson I met were as awesome as Chris and Andy. That would be sweet.

What can I say that hasn't been already said here!  I love that this company has totally re-vamped the way mattresses are sold - we had a wonderful, stress-free experience here.  I LOVE that there were only about eight mattresses to pick from, one of each "type" and clearly explained with signage above each.  Of course the very friendly (and down to earth) sales guy will answer any questions you have - and also just leave you alone if that's what you want, too :)

I really wanted to buy from this company after having researched, read reviews here and visited one of the traditional mattress stores (YUK!)  But I was nervous about making a switch to Memory Foam, even though by all accounts it's a MUCH better product than inner springs.  It would be a matter of adjusting.  Chris admitted it took him a week or so to adjust when he made the switch, but that he would never go back.  Well I'm glad we did it, because it only took me two nights to get used to it.  Now I sleep much better than I was before, and feeling so much more refreshed the next day.  We got the Tealeaf Supreme.

I give Keetsa a 4 star (instead of 5) because we also bought a memory foam body pillow, and it has flattened out after just one week of use.  But I'm going to return it and I'm confident they'll make amends.

I love their eco-friendly practices AND affordable prices.  You can't get memory foam for this price anywhere, I don't think.  We just felt good spending our money here.  Go try them out!

I was immediately contacted by Joe from Keetsa after I posted my review.  I guess about a year ago they had some problems with a round of mattresses that went out and they're replacing my mattress for free!!!

I'm pretty stoked about that.  And now that I'm more educated about these mattresses we're going to take the proper precautions to keep it safe.

Thanks you Keetsa!  Pretty fantastic customer service.  It's really nice to see companies who care so much.
