2 reviews for Keepers of the Wild Nature Park
While visiting my Aunt and Uncle in the sleepy town of Hackberry, she suggested we take a break from riding quads, shooting guns, and barbecuing to go see this wildlife park near her home. I was up for anything and couldn't wait to get to the main road for a little while to get reception on my phone and return phone calls from earlier in the week! It looked really small from the outside and I couldn't imagine seeing much there but my Aunt assured us that that is what she had thought the first time she went there.
She signed us all up for the tour and we ate ice cream from their gift shop while we waited. The tigers SMELLED! SO BAD! Its like they had been peeing on each other all week... and I'm sure there isnt much you can do about that. The tour itself was really cool because we went during their feeding time at 330pm. There are kids that work there that follow behind the tour truck with a sleigh full of meat that they throw over the tops of the cages for a little show at some stops.
I think that what they are doing down there is amazing and I hope that people continue to support them by taking tours and keep this place going!

a couple of years ago when keepers was just a patch of dirt on the edge of a bigger patch of dirt (mainly the arizona desert) and the habitats were not built yet, i went there to get a reality check about how to open a wild cat reserve. if you have ever been to a zoo you know how depressing it is to see big cats in concrete cages having to listen to kids yelling and having flashes go off in their faces. i talked to jonathan, the owner, and a couple of the totally kick-ass peeps that keep keepers and their majestic inhabitants alive. needless to say i got the reality check of my life when i saw what was needed to make a place like this tick--and they weren't even up and running yet! how ironic is it that the cats are free and the food/chain link/water bill/etc. costs a fortune? all those guys have the scares and sunburns to prove what dedicated un-oxygen wasting people they are and i was a little embarrassed about how much i didn't know about what i had been dreaming of. so i drove back to my drunken group that i ditched in vagas to go wild cat yummy-ing and brooded for a couple of days.
i am not the person to save these cats (at least right now). but i bought a ton of stuff i didn't need from the gift shop to help support them. and when i do have money to burn someday i might just ditch it all to help shovel tiger shit in the blazing az sun for the cause.
i don't ever need to go back to vagas (yawn) but i do need to go back to keepers of the wild. and so do you--ROAD TRIP PEOPLE!
