Keegans is a great place to hang out.  Their beers are excellently crafted and always fresh!  I prefer the Hurricane Kitty or the Black Eye, but the latter is a rarity.

Thursday nights are mason jar night and larger servings than the typical pint glass.

They serve some food which from what I can tell is all good.  I've only had the pretzel though and it was great.

Typically a friendly crowd and one where you can feel free to be yourself in.

local beer at its best!  try the Joe Mama, only available at the bar.  you'll want to take a growler home with you.

food is hit or miss, as is the live music.

Dropped by for a quick dinner + drink pre-show at the Ulster Performing Arts Center on a Friday night. Great, airy spot to enjoy a solid micro brew and nosh on some yummy food. I've had Keegan Ales before, my brother is a big fan of New York State micro brews (and of all things in the Catskills/ADK regions, respectively), so I knew I'd enjoy the beer for sure.

We were going to get the beef brisket and the Carolina pulled pork and split it, but unfortunately they were all out of the pulled pork that night. Good thing though, because that brisket was off the hook. There was no waiter service, which I thought was a little strange, but we were running behind so it wound up speeding up our meal and getting us on our way to the show faster. We ordered from a separate station and also got our beers there which saved us a lot of time, because the bar area was packed with Happy Hour goers.

Our food was ready in less than 10 minutes. He decided to go with a side of potato salad, and I opted for the cole slaw. Our sandwiches also came with a pickle. The brisket was phenomenal. Perfectly tender on a lightly toasted bun. The meat to bun ratio was spot on. My cole slaw lacked any type of wow factor which was kind of disappointing. His potato salad was good. I went with the Hurricane Kitty (an IPA) which was delicious, not too hoppy, but definitely happy. (Get it?  ha, ha.) He decided on the Old Capitol which he liked.

They had a big projector screen showing some pointless baseball game (doesn't anyone know it's football season?) and the place stayed pretty crowded even as Happy Hour was coming to an end. There was a party going on on the patio outside. Biggest flaw would have to be the single bathrooms for men and women. I'm anti-waiting in line for the bathroom when at a bar.

Needless to say I really liked what I saw of Kingston and I can't wait to drop by this little town more often on my way to Albany and points North. Thanks Keegan Ales for making my Friday night perfect!

This review is based only on the beer.

It doesn't get any better. I always bring a couple growlers with me and can never resist filling them to take home.

Location in central Kingston is a little intimidating, but this brewery has their own parking lot so it made it feel safer. I went around 6:00 and stayed for 2 beers, people were friendly & bartender was very helpful. We met the owner & he was really easy to talk to, very friendly & knowledgeable. We didn't eat there but the food looked good, we did eat the peanuts though & we all enjoyed throwing the shells on the floor. Later on around 8:00 it got younger, but was a nice chill place.

If you're in Kingston, or the nearby hudson river valley area, stop by Keegan Ales. Good beer, free peanuts, and the building was an old foundry that used to build the manhole covers for the city of Kingston.

If you do stop by, I recommend trying the Joe Mama's Milk, which is the Mothers Milk with cold-brewed coffee added. If you're a stout drinker, It's one of the best coffee stouts I've ever tasted.

The Thursday night concerts bring quite the crowd, so get there a bit early if you want a seat.

Check out http://breweryshow.com, there's a video about Keegan Ales.

Keegan Ales is a great little brew pub. It's a little divey, but they have a little stage, and host live bands.
The food is very good, and the peanuts are free.
All the beers I tasted were good, but I think the Mother's Milk is their best, and I'm not a big stout drinker.
I would definitely recommend Keegan Ales.

I loved this place so, so much.

I had the beer sampler, which was absolutely delicious - Joe Mama's milk was part of it and we had to buy a growler to go because it was beer perfection.

For food I had the Reuben with a side of the most delicious potato salad known to man. I have to say that we were traveling upstate after a dinner at Blue Hill the night before, and I preferred my Reuben + potato salad at Keegan Ales far, far more than my entire meal at Blue Hill. Delicious!

The staff was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable about the beer and food.  This place makes me wish that I lived in the Kingston area so I could come here all the time.  A+, 5* !

Not a bad place, but it only has appeal for people who like ales specifically - well, DUH!! Just look at the name of the place.

Not a fan of ale myself, I've been a lager & hefe weisen fan all my life. But I'll go here when my friends band is playing & for the whole roasted peanuts!

Andrew Jackson was President when this place was built!

A super quirky little brewery in the middle of Kingston? What's not to like?

Easily missed unless you know what you're looking for. Located in the Kingston historic district in a plain brick ex-factory foundry or something building from the 1800's.

The interior is a bit stark but comfortable. The first room has windows to get a peek at the brewery and a small stage where local bands often perform. The next room contains a few picnic tables and very small bar compared to the rest of the room. Dark wood floors, paneling and large beams make you feel you have walked right into the industrial age.

Enough about the building, on to what is made in this building; and that is some great local beer. We should all be happy the brew-master left a career path in molecular biology to do something worthwhile with his time and talents! Brewing runs in his family, apparently his great grandfather brewed "Schlitz" and his father is the founder of Long Island's Brickhouse Pub. The tradition continues with Keegan's offerings that include a fantastic IPA called Hurricane Kitty (a family reference to his grandmother's driving), "Mother's Milk" a silky smooth milk stout and "Old Capital" (yes Kingston used to be the State Capital, nuff said).

The fun stuff at this brewery as with most are the "Special" items, those just released into the wild or served exclusively at their taproom.

"Four Philosophers" is such an item. Recently released and adored by many, this is a Belgian Tripel that pokes fun at Ommegang's "Three Philosophers", an ex-employer of Keegan. It is very good and worth a try.

"Special Kitty" a seasonal superhero version of their IPA is definitely special (if you can catch the brief season it's on tap) as is the coffee infused "Joe Mama's Milk Stout" all very impressive.

An enormous basket of peanuts sits on a shelf for self service and the menu items I sampled were very good. Learn more on their website:

    Enjoy!

    I don't know...
This place kinda sketched me out.  Its in a weird area and has an even weirder mix of clientele.  The beer is okay and they serve peanuts for free (help yourself).  I didn't try the food so I can't comment on that.  The place is spacious so there's plenty of room to sit but they're understaffed (at least in the front room) and get frazzled when you ask for more than just a beer.
I'm not from the area and definitely don't think I'd go out of my way to go back.

Thank you Keegan for being an unpretentious brew pub. It's a peanut shells on the floor kind of place, with a basic back bar and the three mainstays on tap. It's simple, has a large enough space for music and darts, and it's not highbrow, which suits its Midtown location perfectly.

Keegan Ales is a new favorite place to head out for an enjoyable time on the town. They have delicious beer, Joe Mama's Milk is my favorite, because I don't like beer that tastes like beer, and this one is so delicious! Sweet, with a little coffee...Yum. They also have a little kitchen which makes decent food, but the best thing about it are all the peanuts you can crack and eat, the games you can play, and the live music which can be amazing. Favorites have been Slam Alan and Miles Mancuso. Great place to dance the night away.

Stopped in last night as part of a 5 brewery tour we took and found it to be more of a fun local place with live music. The interior itself is nothing much to look at but I guess the important part was the beer right? Truth be told, nothing really stood out here from the pack but I did enjoy myself and the atmosphere. It's a great place to grab a few or many with your friends if you're in Kingston.

Best Brew Pub in the region! I am a stout fan and Mother's Milk delivers.  Be sure to plan a Thursday night visit for $2 pints.  The barbeque is good but portions leave room for the beer.

Good place to get a beer and hang out, even get a bite to eat. I am a big fan of the beer here and its great to have a local brewery right down the street to bring your growler in and get it filled up. Nothing beat thats. The outside beer garden is sweet too.

I love this place. They brew their own beers, which are excellent. I'd recommend the Mother's Milk or the Hurricane Kitty-truly superior brews. Also $3 for a nice tall glass of locally brewed beer is a terrific deal. They offer peanuts by the basket, for free, and you can drunkenly throw the peanut shells on the floor of you so desire. Darts are available, as well as classic boards games like Monopoly and Connect 4, so hanging out and playing drinking games at a leisurely pace are obviously encouraged. The place tends to close early, around 10, so it's better for a weekday after-work drink. The crowd tends to be mixed, but most people looked like they were in their 30's or so, not so much of a college bar. An unpretentious place with the little touches that remind you of what an old-school watering hole might have been like, but really its all about the beer here, which is nice.

DW and I swung by here for lunch and a beer on a recent trip to Woodstock.  It was pretty quiet, there was only one other family in the dining area.  I would imagine this place draws a bigger crowd at night.  The food was decent, I had the BBQ Chicken Sandwhich, I had envisioned grilled chicken breast or something along those lines, but it was just some heated up cold cuts.  DW had the Rueben snagwhich which she enjoyed.  Fresh beer, brewed on the premise is a big plus none of the styles that are offered are my favorite but I enjoyed the pint of Hurricane Kitty (IPA) just as much.  The "seasonal" brew was an offshoot of the Mother's Milk (Stout) with an infusion of Coffee.  Reminded me why I don't drink coffee.  It's probably not a bad beer if you like java...  Anyway, I'd like to check this out on a night where they have something on the calendar.

Went to see Stackhouse at Keegan Ales tonight.  Band was great, beers were very impressive, food was even better than I expected, but the service was really off.  I would have thought with the vibe of happy ex-hippy types that were tearin it up on the dance floor, the bar tenders would be just as laid back and cheery.....but no.  They were down right snooty.  Almost like they looked down at you.  It was out of place.  And they passed me and my friend over several times, to help others.  But other than the really slow and unpleasant service, it was a great time.  Joe Mamas Milk is outstanding!

Keegan Ales is a fun place to commiserate with friends old and new. You can't beat the taste of the beer- my fav is the hurricane kitty cheerfully served up in mason jars. A  rustic quality on the interior to me adds to the comfortable vibe to the place. Keegan's is also a supporter of many community organizations. Great place to wind down after a hard day in the office!

A great place to have some great locally brewed beer, hear great local music, and crack some peanuts in the bar or outside the bar.  It's kind of place where you can find yourself in 3 different areas having fun - the bar and chill area, the 'band' room, or outside on the picnic tables enjoying one of your favorite beers. I haven't experimented with too many different beers that are offered there but have certainly tried the brews brewed right there in the building - Old Capital, Hurricane Kitty, and Mother's Milk. Each have their own niche. The Old Capital is a typical American beer reminding of a (very) tasty light beer. Hurricance Kitty is more of a specialty Indian Pale Ale with the bitterness present just enough to make you notice, but not enough to make you choke. Mother's Milk is a rich stout much like Guiness and Boddington's but goes down a little smother without any bitterness. And of course, you can get numerous other beers at the bar as well as any mixed liquor drink. Expect reasonable prices (especially with the Keegan-brewed beers) with great service. You'll find many areas to sit - at the bar, the sofa and chair area, and even outside on the tables. Keep in mind it is typically open earlier in the evenings, with many people leaving at 12 to 1 AM for other places around town. Check out local bands that may be playing there as well as special weeknight affairs that let you 'Be the DJ' or other events.
