We opted for a condo on the Kona side and could not have been happier with the location which was outside of the commercial strip, but close to a grocery store.  We fell asleep to crashing waves and woke up to beautiful sunrises.  This place has a small beach and a large beach within walking distance, bbq pits, a pool, tennis courts.  I would return given the chance.
