I was really impressed with Kazoo!
I ordered Bentou B and received a smorgasbord of fresh, delicious Japanese goodness.
For $8.75 I got
- Green Tea
- Water
- Miso Soup
-Salad
-Rice
-Gyoza x 3 (potstickers, if you're unfamiliar)
- California Roll x 3
- Chicken Teriyaki
- Chicken Katsu
- An orange slice
(Take note that there are several other bentou combinations you can get as well as many types of sushi and other entrees.)
This could easily count towards two meals, as everyone usually takes their leftovers home for later.
The servers are nice and very attentive to refilling beverages.
I'll upload the picture in a while. You'd better brace yourself for the deliciousness of it all.
I love Kazoo! The staff is extremely friendly & efficient. The food is fresh, flavorful & moderately priced. It is definitely my go to place for a sushi fix.
A few favorites are San Diego, Boston & Hanabi. San Diego is a blend of rolled tempura shrimp, topped with avacado & a delicous hot sauce. Boston is similar except instead of avacado, it's topped with raw tuna, green onion & the forementioned hot sauce. Hanabi. MMMMMM! Hanabi is rolled spicy tuna sprinkled with tempura crumbles, topped with hot sauce, chili powder & green onion - a delightful tasty flavor explosion! I absolutely LOVE this place!
There are two other locations, one in Campbell & the other in San Jose in Japantown. Funny enough, if I had to judge the place by the Japantown location, I probably wouldn't have gone back!
Try Kazoo - you too will be a fan!
My boyfriend took me here for dinner. I was very hungry, especially after sitting in traffic on the 101, I drove from Davis to San Jose that night. My boyfriend wanted to sit at the sushi bar and we were told it would be about 10 minutes. Lies! The wait would not have been as bad if the front of the restaurant had more room to accomodate people who are waiting to be seated and those waiting for take-out. I still do not know how the guys in front keep from bumping into each other, given the lack of space they work in.
Anyways, once seated, we were handed hot towels. I was pleasantly surprised, because I thought handing out hot towels was a dying art. Then I proceeded to eat plate after plate of sushi rolls. Basically, all their rolls are good. They have creative names as well, which is why I cannot name any specifically. My boyfriend also ordered a dinner bento box with port katsu. That was pretty good as well. Our waiter was very polite and even apologized when he order my boyfriend's drink order.
The owners are friendly, but mostly to Japanese people. But I would definitely demand to be taken back here again.
This place is always packed but for a reason, it's good! The price is pretty cheap as well. The service is good too.
We've been to Kazoo for lunch and dinner at least 30 times and had everything from appetizers to the monstrous sushi boat. The kids love it, too! The sushi is fabulous, the donburi is yummy and so is the tempura!
Let's enjoy some rainy day math, shall we?
To be fair, we'll start with 3 stars.
+1 star just for being open on Sunday.
+1 star for having people lining up to get in (including us!).
-1 star for the fishy odor inside
-1 star for offering 3-piece rolls ... wtf?! For our group of 4, that means we had to order two 3-pc rolls if we all wanted a piece. That's messed up and just seems like a gimmick to make you order more.
+1/-1 star for having fresh fish, but the ama ebi was not very tasty and indeed seemed a bit fishy.
+1/-1 star for having a lot of rolls on the menu, but most of them are very similar. And few of them have unagi in it.
That leaves us with a grand total of ...... 3 stars!
Thank you for participating in today's rainy day math lesson. I hope you join us next time! Until then, keep those rubbers on! (Rubber boots, that is, you sicko! We're talking about food here! Eww ... raw fish ... smelly ... yep, keep those rubbers on alright!)
If a Japanese & Okinawan suggest a place. I normally go definitely. I can see why my buddies go there. The food was great, no doubt about it.
Only thing I have to pick on is they could use some remodeling of the place. Other than that, it's good. AND WHAT I LOVE MOST...there is a menu where i check off what i want and just give it to the servers. It's great. I just like using that.
stared going here a few years ago when its all my brother could talk about. Luis is the best chef ever! He will make any special roll your craving. Try the tempura California roll. Everything has its own little touch. You even get a hot towel to use at the beginning! But you have to sit at the boat.
Really great place for take out.
I love their vegetarian selection and their rolls! The Paradise Roll is now my favorite and it has jalapeno, mango, and tuna. They have a couple of other rolls that use jalapeno and I am now a fan of it in my sushi. Prices are pretty reasonable and me and my boyfriend usually are full and happy with a bill of only $20. The waitstaff is nice. I usually go on weeknights and never have a problem getting a table.
Kazoo is one of the best places to have sushi. Have you ever gotten a boat as big as your dining table? Talk about yummy food coma. I definitely recommend this place. The only thing I don't like is NO FREE REFILLS on soda. WTF? Isn't that law???
Anyways, the staff is super friendly, the food is fresh, and well... the service can be a little faster, but when you've got older people serving, you deal with it.
I recommend this place for a quick dinner AND large dinner parties. The party boats are excellent! They have great variety, and nothing is set in stone so you can change it up a bit, and get it the way you want. They have some awesome rolls too. Try some of the local rolls like "San jose Roll" etc.
Nice place. I would recommend to everyone who likes sushi.
So I really have to say that I have been coming to this Kazoo for about 5 years or so. I used to work in Willow Glen and would frequent about 3 times a week. (Now i know where all my money went)
Luis is the head sushi chef and I tell you that for a Hispanic man he can make some sushi. He also can speak Japanese.... although I cant even say hello.
Back to my review - I came here Wednesday to have dinner 3 of us. We sat at the boat. Of course there were items that looked as though they were sitting there for a few rounds, they were quickly picked up by the quickly filled seats. I had to order a few rolls that I hadn't seen on the boat for awhile and they were super yum. Angelina(Angelique?) is ALWAYS accommodating and pays attention. I have to disagree with the reviews that this place is dirty. I have sat next to the kitchen which is only covered with a curtain and have seen how clean they are. Out of the 3 Kazoo locations this is the one I choose to frequent although its not the most convenient.
Wasn't impressed. Right when we entered the restaurant, we noticed that it was dirty. I was craving sushi really bad and was determined to get my sushi fix. Unfortunately, this place didn't cut it.
We ordered Spicy Tuna roll, Philly Roll, and Rock and Roll. There were little gnats flying around all over the place trying to get to the sushi. I'm sure the gnats get all over the fish at the bar before the sushi gets to you. Yuck! The fish wasn't fresh and the seaweed was difficult to chew. The 2 stars are for the miso soup and the tea.
I used to go here every Wednesday night a few years ago for a couple months straight. The workers are extremely personable and are obliged to fulfill any requests a customer may have. All the times I have eaten here the sushi has been pretty fresh. The prices are decent and I always leave feeling satisfied.
My family took me out here for my birthday. The parking is a little hard since it is on the street and very limited. As for dinner, we got the boat that feeds 4-5 people. When they first brought it out, it didn't look like a lot for a family of 5, but we ended up bring a couple boxes home. The food was set up nicely and tasted good, but the sushi could have been better. However, I do feel like the place needs to clean up a bit. It seems a little dirty with flies and dust in some places. The thing that topped off my dinner was the Green Tea Ice cream sundae with a sparkler that they gave me for my birthday!
OK to go to on a night where you're craving sushi and just don't want to wander far from home.... BUT not that great in the quality dept. There are definitely some creative rolls and I like that... but when the nigiri doesn't cut it, it disappoints me.
The food was just okay - my soba soup was good, but the tempura was not great - funky breading, not really panko.
Someone at the table got the deep fried soft shell crab roll - it was disgusting - breaded in a thick, dense, HARD fried casing that was inedible.
Fairly priced, not great, but not terrible. Just okay. I wouldn't object to going back if some friends wanted to meet there, but I wouldn't go there on my own.
I have been craving sushi for the past 3 months!!! (I'll have it the day after I give birth to be sure) This place is very modestly priced and the sashimi is very fresh. I love the salmon nigiri (like buttah) and they have a specialty 'firecracker' roll to die for. Luis, the head chef knows me and Tricia when we walk in and almost never have to order.
They have a little guide to show you how much each plate is and I think the most costly is not more than $6.00. Very reasonable!
Service is good, just make sure to sit at the bar and not a table because you're likely to wait a bit longer.
I don't know why, but this place is not near the quality of the place in Japan Town. The sushi goes round and round on the little boat for what seems to be an eternity. Who decides when our now luke warm friend has journeyed long enough? I always ask the guy in the pit to make me fresh stuff or I'll grab something that has only made one or two trips around the bar.
There are much better places in San Jose to choose from.
There were no kazoo's........
Ok that is out of the way now, I have really been perplexed by that for sometime. Maybe I need to check and see if kazoo means something in Japanese.....maybe Im glad there are no kazoo's, that would get annoying everytime someone walked in..."Hello..brbrbrbrbrbrb"
Who cares about mindless children's circus instruments anyhow, what you want is to read something about the food.
I can't say I love the location, although I do love looking across the way at Bella James and oogling over what cute article of clothing I want to buy that I don't need.
The sushi is not bad, it's nothing that I pine over however, I think their other locations are better but this does in a pinch. I do have to say I love their "See Thru Shrimp" rolls. They remind me of a Vietnamese spring roll. See thru rice paper with mayo/crab, rice, cilantro, and a shrimp on top, yum! They have good stuff floating around on the boats and that is what we stick with when we go. Tonight they had a bunch of new stuff that my husband tried out and loved, Paradise Roll, Spicy Boston Roll. And a bonus point for labeling stuff on the boats...pet peeve of sushi boats - staring at some nori wrapped present circling my plate taunting me to eat it and take a chance.
3.5 stars......hey they greet you with a warm cloth to wipe your paws when you come in.....
I had the sushi love boat. It's pretty good. The boat could feed more than 4 people. The boat included chicken karaage, fried oyster, chicken katsu, california rolls, sashimi...etc etc. Tons of food on the love boat. The restaurant bar also served sushi floating around the sushi boat. The Japanese lady worked in the restaurant was extremely nice and friendly. This place is dead on Sunday. Most restaurants are dead on Sunday in japantown, San Jose.
OMG! That was F*ing disgusting!
I felt like throwing up when I left there the other day. The rolls were all same (avocado, tuna and orange sauce) in different variations. They were also dried out like they have been sitting there for hours. The miso was okay but I do not recommend any place that makes "genuine sushi" with a Mexican as the chef. No offense Amigo-san.
No offence to the people that eat there as well, but you all really have no idea about what good sushi is. Check out Michi, Kiku, or Pink Godzilla. I am looking forward to a decent sushi place coming to Willow Glen.
Yet another bad floating boat place. Nothing much to say about this place, lousy selection of fish, awkward bar and chair height but fairly good service.
Having said that, I would return to this place over say... blow fish sushi. At least this place is unassuming. It is what it is.
Hey, I like it. Nice little sushi place located in the Garden Mall, which used to be a theater. Has tables inside the restaurant and out in the open mall. Also, has a sushi bar where you sit right up, watch the boats float by with the sushi on them and grab what you want to eat.
I had the spicy tuna rolls, California rolls, shrimp tempura rolls and the unagi roll. All were tasty and a treat.
They have a complete menu to include teriyaki, udon and other assorted dishes.
Great for lunch or dinner.
I love Kazoo!! Hubby and I were introduced to this place by some friends a couple of years back and we have been hooked ever since!! Love Friday's during Lent when hubby and I go almost every week.
Kazoo has great food. The place is always busy and when you eat the food you know why. This is our favorite Japanese restaurant. The place is always busy so expect a wait during the prime dining hours. It's not a fancy place and there is no waiting room inside. Please go if you like sushi and the like
Kazoo is a cute little corner Sushi resturant with cute plastic displays outside that completely attract you. The service is very welcoming and the setting of the food is something out of the ordinary. When they mean sushi boat.. they mean SUSHI BOAT! There were boats that came out to the size of your entire dining table to some as small as 1/3. The best thing I enjoy here is the Udon which is only 7-8 dollars during happy hour 5:30-6:30. Fresh Udon noodles and crispy fried tempura! Something I always have a craving for. A good resturant to eat from time to time.
Okay, I just moved to the Willow Glen area & I needed a Sushi fix. I remembered there was only one sushi place that I saw in a renovated theater-now turned into mini mall. Well, I barely ate my food even though I was hungry. I was pretty disapointed, because I never waste food! I mean, it wasn't horrible, just wasn't tasty at all. I just couldn't eat it. Barely had flavor and the salad seemed sour.... I don't remember the salads ever being sour! I finished my miso soup, ate the shrimp tempura and drank a lot of water and rice with soy sauce.
So if you need a sushi fix & your in the Willow Glen area, it's better to go somewhere else or you can have Chinese.
Cheers!
The service is pretty friendly but the sushi is terrible.
Best, tastiest sushi in this price range. Good for a quick bite since there are sushi boats, or for a smaller sushi meal titrated to your hunger level (if you're not looking for a big entree every time you go out). Pick what looks freshest or ask the friendly sushi chef to make you something good.
I've been coming here for eight years, and it's my favorite sushi restaurant in San Jose!
hmmm... this was decent enough. the tonkatsu was nice, light breading and still moist, but everything else was just o.k. the rolls all looked as if they had taken one to many "voyages around the kazoo" if you know what i'm saying.
the vibe was at first off putting, it does have a total mall food court feel to it. but, the crowd sitting at the bar with us were very obviously regulars and my neighbors in willow glen. everyone was conversing with each other, knew the chefs by name and whatnot. it was pretty cute. also the waitstaff is incredibly friendly, which earns big points in my book.
i would come back again if i was walking downtown and wanted some sushi, but i wouldn't make a special trip for it.
Straight-forward sushi joint that does a furious business at lunchtime. Decent option if you are in the area and looking for a quick Japanese or sushi fix.
If you have to go to a Kazoo and can afford a few minutes to drive to downtown SJ, go to the one on Jackson Street. The location on Lincoln is awkward, and the quality of food is just so-so.
"that'll do piggy, that'll do." i head to kazoo when i need my sushi fix but don't feel like driving to yuki sushi. the quality is ok and they are put together well. the proportion of fish to rice is good...i hate the spots that skimp on fish and compensate by going big on the rice. booooooooo.
it's strictly a to-go spot for me as there is no ambience to speak of whatsoever. it's located in..hmm..not quite sure how to describe it..a mini-mall that was once a theater..at least that's what it looks like from the outside. (same building where the willow glen post office is located.)
would i go again: yup, but only for take out.
I choose to come here instead of the one in Japan town only because they are always crowded! I love the service! Amazing friendly staff!! The food is always good and made fast! Their soups are good, Batman roll, san jose roll, chicken ter., and also temp. california rolls and the best! Mmmmm
I like this place too! It's in a cute location (the old movie theater) and along the Willow Glen strip. The people are so friendly and they ALWAYS give my family and I great service. I love their Salmon Skin Hand Rolls. There has been NO OTHER place that can compare. The salmon skin is cooked perfectly! YUMMY! ;) Whenever we're in the area, we eat at Kazoo. It's reasonable for sushi and delicious! We don't live in the area, but if we did, we would be there four-five times a week.
disapointing. I like the Kazoo in Japantown, so was thrilled to find out there was one in my neighborhood. It's located in a hollow mall-type setting, and the food isn't the freshest. After having bad mochi ice creams three times in a row, I vowed to never go back. (When I pointed out that the mochi they had served me were bad, i was informed that I was wrong, that nothing is wrong with the mochi. Very odd, I'm quite sure that the doughy outside of a mochi should not be crunchy).
I love this place, though the Campbell joint has a wider selection of rolls. Great service, great food, plus spicy spider crab rolls, can't beat those...
This place is very close to my house and it is a great place that my wife and I go to quite a bit. I dont eat the Sushi, but my wife says that it is really good. I get their Chicken Terryaki plate and it is really goo. I also ge what they call See Through Chicken Roll and it is really good. Great as a take out place too.
This place is very close to home, so that's a big plus for me. I have come here several times a month for the past couple of years and really, really like it. The people are very friendly, and the sushi is fresh and tasty. OK, I admit I'm not a sushi expert (no raw fish for me!), but I love the California rolls, the New York rolls, the Unagi rolls, and many of the other rolls that they whip up. A couple of California rolls, bowl of miso soup, and a salad (with their excellent sesame dressing), and a carafe of hot Saki and I'm very content.
