After paying almost $400 every 6 weeks to maintain my Illegally Blond status, I happened upon this salon.  In fact, it's right around the corner from my apartment (again don't stalk).

The prices here are good, my highlights (sans tip) are about $200, and I can always get an appointment.

I took stars away because: (1) they always seem to be trying to get you to pay for more services, a blow dry is 50 (not included), trying to get you to get your nails done there, or trying to get you to have your hair cut...once I'm at a place I don't like to be hassled to spend more money; (2) all they ever talk about when I'm in there is making more money and getting celebrities in there and how it will be good for business.  Clearly, they are new and need more business, but I don't need to know that, nor be a part of it.

They do a great job with my hair, and I come back here every time it needs to be redone, but it could use a little tweaking to get it up to a higher ranking.

EDIT:  Went there tonight, they have much improved.  They get an additional star!!

Horrendous experience....

I went in with a request to make dyed-dark hair lighter, blonde if possible... This always has potential for a gross result, sure, but I sought out a salon that markets itself as excellent with color. And then, upon arrival, I found that Stuart Hirsch himself would be doing my color. Self-proclaimed "one of the best colorists in New York"............

Well not only did I NOT get what I wanted (my first visit left my brown hair... brown.) but when I went back for corrective color, Mr. Hirsch seemed annoyed that I was back, and proceeded to haphazardly and distractedly bleach and highlight my hair into oblivion, as if he assumed all I really wanted was lighter hair, whatever the outcome may be. Well it was lighter... it was also an ugly, brassy orange, with even darker patches underneath and some bright blonde streaks around my face.
!!!

I went to a "master colorist" and paid him a lot of money to avoid this kind of huge mess. And in all honesty, he made my hair look terrible.

Despite how bad it was, which he knew just as much as I did, he said if I wanted to come in again he'd have to charge in full, as it's "just too much work to do for free." Ok ... yeah I don't like that it's taking hours and hours and all sorts of bleach either, but are you really going to let me leave with this tie-dyed orange-white-brown situation?? Aren't stylists supposed to fix their own mistakes for free? Are you really that busy with the one, maybe two other clients who've been here in the last 3 hours?

So: I went to another salon (the excellent Beehive in Williamsburg) for a consultation/ "second opinion"-- the wonderful and kind stylist there was ABSOLUTELY HORRIFIED by the color and told me I needed to try to get my money back. She actually said this was embarrassing for her, as a hair stylist, to see such bad work.

THE BEST PART: I then called Stuart Hirsch and asked if I could get my money back for the color, since I had to get it completely corrected. His response: "Are you KIDDING me? You're the one whose hair I had to do, like, 50 times?? You came in with BLACK hair [which is false]. Are you kidding me?!" He hung up on me. TWICE.

And so I wonder: Does he not have a reputation to uphold, whether it's concerning his attitude or, arguably more important, his WORK? His website says he has all sorts of "celebrity clients," whom he probably treats much better... but considering the lack of traffic on both days I was in the salon, maybe he should be working on his everyday customer service... He knows he completely F-ed up my hair color. Everyone who saw it afterward agreed. He should have been bending over backwards to try to fix something that looks like an amateur did it, especially for the money they're asking. It took 4 hours at another salon, and plenty more money, to fix.

And I just couldn't believe his attitude.

All that said, I got my hair cut there too, by Hilly, who did a wonderful job and was very kind. I guess that's one positive.....

I feel bad about the ratings I just read because I just went there for the first time last week and had a great experience. my old stylist had given me a bad cut and color and I needed someone new to come to the rescue.  Maybe my experience was different because of the stylists that worked on me. Nikki did my coloring and Whitney did my haircut.  Both did an amazing job and both had great personalities that kept me entertained while I got my hair done.
