These gardens are lush, beautiful, and a real sanctuary.  Located just off of the Plaza and south of the Nelson-Atkins, you can find a space for a great afternoon stroll.  I first visited these gardens with my grandmother after a trip to the Bloch.  We had never been there were completely blown away by the variety of plants, flowers, and colors.  The space is divided into a couple of different area, one of which features a beautiful fountain.  My grandmother had no problem naming far more plants and flowers than I could, but we both found ourselves reading most of the small signs distinguishing what each of the plants were.

There is also a nice indoor area where tropical plants are housed to include the most striking orchids I have ever seen.  In this space are restrooms, a drinking fountain and a resident cat (please do not feed him though).  There are gardeners there at most times and they are happy to speak with you if you have any questions about the garden.

Tucked away, you can also visit the resting place of Ewing and Muriel Kauffman.  The gardens serve as a memorial to the work they did in the community and as a beautiful place for them to rest.

I will definitely be frequenting these gardens when ever the weather permits.  There are plenty of benches and shade trees to read under, people watch, or perhaps learn a little something about gardens.

A haven of serenity and silence is hiding in the midst of our urban landscape.  At The Ewing and Muriel Kauffman Memorial Garden, tranquility sits within plain sight of Troost and Taco Bell.

High stone walls shelter plantings and pathways that invite contemplative thought. Playful bronze sculptures cast long winter shadows on carefully trimmed topiaries.

And when your frosty fingers have had enough of strolling, slip into the conservatory for a respite of warmth, color, and light.  Under the graceful glass ceiling, a resident cat has the right idea, snoozing amid lilies and poinsettias in the late afternoon sun.

And if the conservatory cat is not enough excitement, little ones will delight in seeing towering palm trees and exotic flowers flourishing in the dead of winter.

This little bit of horticultural bliss is located at 4800 Rockhill Road, Kansas City, MO, 64110. The garden is open 8am to sunset year round.

Note: You can see photos of the garden on my Tumblr blog, The Family Unit (link under Yelp Profile).

Small, but beautiful. Laid back, but beware - wedding pictures galore here! In fact, that's why I came, as part of a wedding party. There was at least one other wedding party, and a couple other big groups doing pictures - I think quinceañera's. For such a small place, it was packed. So, my recommendation would be to come on a weekday.

It was really lovely inside. Tons of different flowers, trees, plants. Descriptions for all did make it a nice place to learn a bit too. I'd love to come back and actually explore the full garden instead of just getting my picture taken there.

I no longer have to say "those are gorgeous purple balls", instead I can say "those are gorgeous purple alliums"!  Thanks Kauffman Memorial Garden!  Seriously, what an awesome space for people that love to garden or people that hope to garden someday.  Besides being lush and beautiful, the gardens are educational in the vast variety of plants that they display and showcase.  What is that and what grows in my neighborhood is all answered by stopping by this fantastic garden.

It is serene, beautiful and private.

Don't let the word "memorial" in the name of this garden go unnoticed as it did on me.  It took a couple of visits to notice the grave markers in the far corner of the gardens.  I first thought it was just a "marker" in memory of the Kauffman's, but NO, it's the actual gravesite for Ewing and Muriel Kauffman.

This truly is a hidden jewel in our city that I hope people take a couple of moments and go-to to be inspired and take in a piece of beauty.

This picturesque two acre garden is the ideal location for wedding proposals, photographs, meditation, picnics, and to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. It's beautifully maintained by Powell Gardens and showcases over 7,000 plants.

Admission is free and it's open from 8 AM to dusk. I regret not visiting this gem sooner as it's the most beautiful and zen location in Kansas City. The landscape of beautiful flowers and plants is also perfect for testing out the macro mode on a camera. I posted some of the photographs from my point and shoot camera.

The location of the garden is ideal as the Nelson-Atkins, Kemper, and the Plaza are within walking distance. Perfect for taking out-of-town guests or a wonderful morning/afternoon to yourself.

I'm on board with these gardens.  Simply beautiful, plus I like the labels also!  Wife and I have been a few times and there's never a crowd.  Powell Gardens is fantastic but the Kauffman Garden, while diminutive, is much more conveniently located.

I think I can definitively say this is my favorite spot in the city.  Tucked away and underrated, yet on a main drag for a curious blend of accessible and private. Surrounded by a tall stone wall, this little garden has beautiful structure, landscaping, and statuary.  The garden is gorgeous in any season, very picturesque and peaceful.  You can walk there on the Brush Creek pedestrian path that goes by Theis Park, and stroll up the hill to the Nelson Atkins' front lawn. There is an orangery on the grounds, which is basically a fancy, ornate greenhouse, and when I've been there, it's been "guarded" by a resident kitty.  A really charming retreat that it seems not many people really know about, amazingly.

This place is so relaxing, a beautiful retreat from the city. In memory of the Kuaffman's, this garden is beautiful arranged with a huge variety of plants, and fountains. This place and free and open for the public. They have different areas where you can sit and have your sack/lunch. Every time I go I see bike riders enjoying their meal. The garden is surrounded by a tall wall and has its own private property. Newly weds also like to take pictures there. It is nice. And there is an indoor garden where restrooms are available. The plant selection is very colorful. I've gone to take pictures there of their plants and then i blew them up and arranged them on my living room wall. Very cool.
