I LOVE Hawaiian food! I've tried almost every Hawaiian restaurant around the Seattle area and this place has GOT to be the best! The only downside is that I can only go there on Saturdays for Breakfast/Lunch since they're closed on Sundays and Mondays and only open a little later on Thursdays and Fridays!

    Sunday and Monday: Closed :(
    Tues-Wed-Sat: 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
    Thurs-Fri  9:30 a.m  to 7:30 p.m

You know this place is authentic when they have poi AND Hawaiian chili water flown in FROM Hawaii! Sure, the chili water is an extra $.75 or so but to complete the experience, it's priceless!

Loco Moco: How can you go wrong with this?
Kalua Pig: Smoky, salty, flavorful goodness! Definitely my fav!
Pork Lau Lau: Unfortunately this doesn't have the fish inside! And mine was a little dry that day.
    Spam Musubi: Delicious!
    Mac Salad: Yum.
    Chicken Katsu: Crunchy goodness

Also - fresh Malasadas on Saturdays!

This is a great little Hawaiian place. Not the most aesthetic surrounding area but that typically means the food will be amazing.
I had been wanting to try it out for a few weeks, have been making the rounds of the "local" restaurants since arriving here in July and typically frequent Saimin Says because its closer to us. Finally pulled the trigger, made the drive and am very glad we did.
I love Hawaiian food, have since living there, marrying a woman from Hawaii, etc.. Had it alot of different places. and I have to say, this is the best I've had so far in this area. I've had better, lets start with that. But the atmosphere is wonderful. Truly what being "local" is about. Friendliness, warmth... You feel like you're at someone you love's house.
First, malasadas, they have them, they're amazing. It seems every culture has their version of fried dough, but these are a little denser, like a doughnut. The stews, gravy were fairly good.
So, no, I haven't tried alot yet, but I look forward to going back to try more but based on atmosphere and authenticity, I was very impressed and I hope you experience the same.
They offer things you might not find at other "local" restaurants like chicken long rice, ahi poke, lomi lomi salmon and lau lau every day.
Oh yeah, I think the malasadas are only on Saturdays, FYI.

Absolutely one of the best Hawaiian restaurants in the Northwest.

The food is as good as if you were back on the islands. It's packed with flavor and cooked to satisfaction.

The atmosphere and staff is friendly and laid back, as they converse with you as if they have known you a long time.

This place is small and gets extremely busy so it may be hard to find parking and a table during their peak hours.

Lots of Hawaiian people in the restaurant - must mean the food is good and authentic! :)

Parking: sightly ghetto strip mall, make sure to lock your car

Ambiance: This is where they go down a star - tacky decor, wanted to go over the table and chairs with a chlorox wipe.

Food: Wow - wonderful flavorful dishes!!!  Pork lau lau - wrapped in leaves - luau I think - gives the moist tender pork a slight tea flavor - yum!  I had the crispy garlic chicken and sweet and sour ribs - both really great, although I'm not sure where the garlic was in the garlic chicken - tasted more like really good fried chicken.  The best part of the meal was the fried rice - you pay 50 cents more, but it might be the best 50 cents you've ever laid down, pieces of bbq pork, lots of veggies - delish!!!  The mac salad was just so-so, a little on the sour side.  Portion size is large.

    Recommendation: do take-out. :)

Argh maybe I'm a bit harsh... Well maybe a tad bit.

The good: yummy tummy Mac salad. Good smoke pork. Fried chicken was a nice.

The bad: it's in bfe and Far from my office. One of the piece of chicken was just bone (I think the neck)... I'm a fan of dark meat and I don't think the neck area qualifies as dark meat!

Lau Lau pork is on my hit list for Kauai family restaurant.

I had trouble deciding between 3 and 4 stars.  I would say that the food is good, but not amazing.  But since I have little experiance with Hawaiian food, I do not know how it compares.  My wife said that it was pretty good compared to what she has had in the past, so I guess it gets at least 3 stars.

We both had the lau lau.  The pork was very tender.  I had the macaroni salad and white rice.  The macaroni salad was as good as I ever had at a restaurant.  My wife had the fried rice and said that it was great.  It was flavorful and it was obvious that it got some of that flavor from being fried in pork fat.  It makes it taste good, but prevents us eating it very often.

I don't typically downgrade a place based on service unless service ruins the whole experiance.  Service here was bad.  The waitress forgot my wife's drink and she seemed distracted the whole time.  I will keep the rating at 3 stars despite the bad service.

One of the better Hawaiian restaurants in Seattle, although I thought it was a bit pricey. Had the chopped steak w/rice - it was really good. The workers are really nice and personable, the environment has a warm HI feel. They also sell chantilly cake by the slice, cheehoooo!

    Best real Hawaiian food ever!!

Okay, maybe I am just a little biased since this is really the only place I've had Hawaiian food but it really is that great! This little family own place is tucked away in the Georgetown area. It can be pretty hard to find, even I sometimes take the wrong turn.

The first time I tried their ginger fried chicken, ah it was heaven. Now that is the kind of fried chicken I crave. Very tender meat booming with flavor, doesn't make you feel bloating either. They gave me such a generous amount that it became my lunch and dinner which who can complain about, right?

I love macaroni salad and it's not always easy to find a good one among restaurants. Kauai serves a very tasting mac salad as a side, I just wish I got more of it.

There's also a bakery connected to the restaurant which I didn't stop in personally but I was lucky to try the guava cake. From that day on, it became my new favorite cake and yes I did go home and try to recreate it. (Which I failed part way)

I need to stop by to dine in sometime to really tell you how the service is. Always on the go so I just called ahead for my food. They serve breakfast too which I really want to try. The prices are great, you get oh so delicious food and plenty of it for a fair price.

My downside are the hours of operation. It gets sort of confusing so I am constantly checking on their website, and find out they're already closed.. All I remember is to go there before 3pm because that is the normal time they will close the place.

So if you love homemade food, you need to check this little place out. Forget about those chain restaurants, they got nothing on Kauai.

Hawaiian food seems to be the best comfort food.  Curry, stew, gravy... guaranteed to chase away the rainy day blues!

I have thoroughly enjoyed everything I've eaten here. The laulau pork was really tender and smoky. Lomi salmon was bright and fresh (but a little lacking in substantial salmon chunks :(  ). Cucumber kim chi was a tasty quick-pickled item - fresh cukes dressed in hot pepper and salt (and other spices?). Yum yum.

Just don't think of coming here while on a diet - after eating the loco moco, I swear my heart rate increased 25%. But it's worth a mini heart attack.

Their hours are crappy but their tasty food makes up for it!! This is my go-to place to get a plate lunch fix.  Definitely try the sweet & sour spare ribs if they are on specially (they are not a normal menu item).  I like the hamburger steak better than the loco moco I feel like you get a better portion of food.   The malasada batter to take home is always nice because you can keep it in your freezer and just make however many you want then put it back into the freezer.  If you want a true "hawaiian" experience go with the lau lau and lomi salmon or the kalua pig and cabbage.  Their guava cake is a little sweet but the haupia cake is good.  Don't forget to get a hawaiian sun drink from the fridge!!

On a cold rainy day in Seattle, Kauai Family Restaurant is the perfect place to go eat when I'm homesick and missing Hawaiian cooking.

First off, here are the restaurant hours--as I've gone here before when it's closed :(
    Sunday and Monday: Closed
    Tuesday, Wednesday: 9:30am-3:30pm (breakfast/lunch served)
    Thursday, Friday: 5:00-7:30pm (dinner served)
    Saturday: 9:30am-3:30pm
**Breakfast items are served ALL DAY***

The atmosphere totally makes me feel at home.  It's like you walk out of the cold, into your uncle or auntie's house and you can smell ono food everywhere!

My friend ordered the adobo and I ordered the chicken cutley w/gravy.  The gravy was just how I like it--not too thick and we got a side of their Lawai Ginger Chicken.  This chicken is amazing and I swear you'll want to take a whole plate-full home with you.  As usual, all the plate lunches come with mac salad (YUM!) and rice.  You can also substitute fried rice instead of white rice.

    Menu: http://www.kauaifamily....

Next time I want to try their breakfast plates--portuguese sausage, fried rice and an egg on top.  :-)

    Dems ono kine grindz.

I've been hankering for some loco moco and Kauai Family Restaurant's hit the spot. Gravy all over everything. Winnah!

My buddy got the kalua pork and eggs and let me try it and it was excellent. Nice smoke, not too salty. Ono pig. Winnah!

We saw a plate of the ginger fried chicken going out to another table and ended up having to order that too. Perfectly crispy outside and tender gingery goodness inside. Winnah!

And I had a lomi salmon hankering and had to get an order of that too. I saw signs saying they sell smoked salmon by the pound so I am assuming the smoked salmon in the lomi was home made. Either way it was primo. Winnah!

I'm totally going to go back soon for some laulau and kalua pig but right now I think I need to go sleep off my breakfast.

If you like good food - regardless of whether you've tried Hawaiian food in particular - then you should check out this sweet little hole-in-the-wall hidden in Georgetown.

Service is so friendly, and homey, you feel like you're part of the family.

Food is amazing. My favorites are kalua pork and ginger fried chicken (delicately sweet, crisp, tender, and moist).  You should throw in some spam musubi for safe measure, to feel complete with the Hawaiian experience.  There is also a beef jerky appetizer (the name is escaping me right now) that is also very yummy and authentic.

I found another great hidden gem and hole-in-the-wall in Seattle.  Kauai is definitely not off a main thoroughfare and is located in an industrial type of area.  I was lucky enough to find Kauai via word of mouth.

The restaurant is very small and can/will fill up very fast.  Despite the lack of open space, there was still enough room in the corner for a musician and his guitar for some good ole live music.   It seriously makes you feel like you're in Hawaii.

The menu displays all types of Hawaiian dishes.  I was lucky enough to try the ginger chicken, which was crazy delicious.  I also tried their freshly made kambazulas (I think that's what they're called), which are essentially big doughnut holes rolled in sugar.....mmmmm.

The highlight of the dining experience at Kauai was tasting their cakes.  I tried their haupia cake and their "rainbow" cake (lime, guava, and pineapple?).  The great thing about this restaurant is that the bakery that supplies their cakes is right next door.  Booyah!

I'll definitely be back to try a couple of other dishes.  I also want to try some of their other delicious-looking cakes.

This was definitely the best Hawaiian food I've had in Seattle. I've been spoiled by frequent visits to family in Hawaii and my mother's Hawaiian cooking, so I've been disappointed by the L&L Kitchens here and a few of the other options I've had (don't remember the names).

Had the Pork Lau Lau, Kalua Pig, Beef & Chicken Hawaiian BBQ & Hamburger Steak and it was all delicious! Prices were good.

The service was very friendly and had a very laidback, homey feel. It was a little slow because they were very busy and had one server and one cook, but it wasn't an overly long wait - definitely worth it!

Hands down the best Hawaiian food in Seattle.  I love coming here if I want to eat a good meal and take my time with it.  Kalua pork is my favorite dish so I often order the Kalua pork with cabbage or Kalua pork with eggs and rice.  I especially love bringing leftovers of the Kalua pork  with eggs and rice home so the following day, I would stir fry it with garlic and serve it with a side of spam.

They also serve the best mac salad in town, which I must have with every meal I eat here.  Just recently, I ordered their ahi tuna poke and I do not know why I did not order this sooner!  Sure, it took awhile to get our order of poke but it was worth the wait.  You can tell that it was made to order.  The dish tasted very fresh and the chunks of tuna were very generous.  I also love how vibrant the redness of the tuna was.

You cannot leave this place without ordering desserts here.  Guava cake is my favorite dessert here but I also enjoy the other desserts offered.

I eat too much when I get here.

Call in, it gets super crowded and busy during the work week. We called our order in and still had to wait. Do that, there is a menu online. No worries, we get down on some food so we just waited. Don't get offended if you have to bus your own table BEFORE you sit down. They are super busy making epic portions to serve.
    The hot sauce is AMAZING.
This is my favorite Hawaiian restaurant so far.

What else can I say about Kauai Family Restaurant, other than it's truly amazing. Having tried the breadth of Hawaiian food available in the Seattle area, I can truly say that Kauai Family Restaurant is the best I've had.

Their musubis are always top notch, and they do fun combinations with them as well. Sure, you can get your spam musubi or a chicken katsu musubi. But I'm a particular fan of the spam and fried egg musubi that is an occasional brunch special. It feels like the perfect way to start your day. And if that isn't fatteningly delicious enough for you, try their SPAM KATSU musubi! For those people who eat a spam musubi and say, "You know, it's just not fried enough for me."

All of their entrees are amazing; so much so, that it's honestly hard to order only one. Sometimes during brunch, we'll each get an entree and also a small breakfast thing because it sounds so tasty.

But heed my warning - if they're offering a "Kanak Attack" special, do not order anything else!!

Urban dictionary informed me that "Kanak Attack" means "The feeling of intense laziness that one gets from eating too much." So it makes sense that the special named after this feeling comes with 2 heaping scoops of cooked rice, a pound of kalua pork, 3 eggs, and smothered in gravy. It was seriously like one of those challenges on Man vs. Food.

In case you're wondering, food won. But I had tons of awesome leftovers for the next week.

The woman who has consistently served us has always made our trips to Kauai Family Restaurant a great experience. I was sad to learn last time that she was gearing up to retire, but if even a fraction of her personality remains with the restaurant, it will always be a fun place to go back to. In fact, I may go back this weekend.

For hawaiian food, this place is probably one of the top 3 that I tried in WA. The food overall is pretty good, it has a homecooked type taste of Hawaiian food. The pricing is pretty fair and for those that care, service is nice and very hawaiian like.

Disclaimer: As I state in my profile, I claim to be an expert in this type of food so I hope you weight my rating higher than the norm.

Dishes: Variety of dishes though I will say their breakfast isn't as good as the rest (lunch). The portugeuse donts aren't very good. The food can be a bit greasy but thats the way it should be so don't complain if you don't like greasy.

The best Hawaiian food I've had outside of Hawaii! The only gripe is that it's so far away! I definitely need to make it a point to come here more often. Prices are extremely affordable, and a very authentic restaurant. I've only been here on weekdays so don't know about the weekend crowds, which I imagine can be busy, as it's not the largest restaurant.

This is great little family owned Hawaiian restaurant that's located in Georgetown, which is an industrial area in South Seattle. They get very busy during lunch time as workers in the area flock there for delicious Hawaiian food.

I really like their oxtail soup with rice, especially on rainy days. It's the perfect comfort food, and they seem to have gotten the recipe down on oxtail soup. I also love their lau lau!

The service is excellent at this restaurant. The female server their is so friendly. I feel like I'm in Hawaii when I'm there. She takes the time to say hi and check on me and my food.

The Hawaiian cakes there are also very good. I'll order dessert there when I'm not already too full from oxtail soup and spam katsu musubi, which is my favorite combination there. Their hours are rather limited and so is their parking, so you'll have to plan a little before going there.

That being said, the food was quite wonderful. I enjoyed the pork, wish I would have mixed their BBQ sauce w/hot sauce, would have been great. The mac salad was as advertised and reviewed, superb, and I really don't eat mac salads. Looking forward to trying their smoked pork, they were out today. I ordered the Poki. A little too salty so I dipped in the hot sauce.

My friend brought me some of their pink passion fruit cake earlier this year. Not only did I not know about this place I don't think I ever had had Hawaiian food before. I looked at the yelp reviews and decided to try the spam musubi and the kalua pork. You could get the pork with or without cabbage, although adding some greens to it made it a little healthier I think next time I'll pass.
The pork was amazing! and so were the sides.  It comes with a macaroni salad ( something I normally don't really like even a little) and steamed rice ( you can subsitute fried rice for like 35 cents more). So I got the fried rice it was just okay but the rice they made it with is really yummy ( sticky) the macaroni salad was good too!
I had no idea what spam musubi was.  It reminded me of sushi with the omlet on it but sub out a piece of spam. I didn't love this dish but didn't hate it either ( totally an aquired taste).
I loved my kalua pork and am excited to go back again and try some other things on the menu!

Kauai Family Restaurant (or Kauai Kafe, as my friends have been used to calling it) has been a favorite spot of mine since I used to work at the Boeing site nearby. I still try to stop by here for lunch whenever I'm going to the airport.

This restaurant is great!! It has very delectable, simple, delicious food. I'm not Hawaiian, but you dont need to be to know good food when you eat it.

I'm usually partial to Hamburger Steaks and Loco Moco's, preceded by Spam Masubi's. The hamburger steak is grilled to perfection, topped with grilled onions and gravy. The Mac Salad is the PERFECT compliment to the meal, not too rich, not too bland, just perfect. The spam masubi has a great chunk of spam fried, with what seems like a hint of teriyaki sauce on it, on a bed of perfectly cooked rice, wrapped in seaweed.

I've also tried their Kalua Pork, and it is absolutely amazing. I've never tried authentic stuff in Hawaii, but I cant imagine it being much different. The pork is very tender and juicy. There is the subtle saltiness from the juices and cabbage, but mainly you just savor the awesome flavor of the pork!!

My friends in the past have had their Hawaiian BBQ chicken and pork, and trying their dishes, they have have been delicious as well.

Once they even had a special for the day: Korean Galbi (beef short ribs).. which I tried and it was utterly amazing as well!!

The people here are very friendly, which just makes this place the PERFECT comfort spot to go to, on bad days, happy days, sad days, or on the many rainy days that plague Seattle.

Come try out their food and you wont be disappointed =)

Warm friendly service combined with delicious dishes more than makes up for a couple mix-ups on our order.

Tucked away on a short street in industrial Georgetown, Kauai Family Restaurant  was a full house when we showed up noontimeish on a showery Saturday.  However, nobody was having to wait for a table.

With Hawaiian folk music playing in the background, we ordered a side of Spam and a side of calamari for starters.  For entrees, JP ordered one of the specials - pork ribs and fried rice.  I ordered the Hawaiian chopped beef with fried rice, with gravy on the side.

When the Blue Angels flew over very noisily, the two waitresses cheered and clapped as did a couple other patrons.

JP received his pork ribs very quickly, as we did with the Spam as well.  But probably three times, one of the waitresses came to our table to see if one of the dishes she was carrying was my order.  Alas, none of them were.  But finally, my chopped Hawaiian beef arrived.  A few minutes later the calamari showed up.

The ribs were great.  We also thought the fried rice, with vegetables and bits of spam was extra flavorful.  The calamari was decent.  I loved my Hawaiian beef, which had both white and green onion, and was seasoned excellently.

You pay up at the counter in the back.  We wanted to purchase a dozen of the Portuguese donuts, but the gal at the counter indicated that they had just sold their last dozen.  Darn!  By the way, because the calamari did take a while to come out, they took that off our bill.

We absolutely plan to come back.

I only ate at one other Hawaiian place in Federal Way besides this one. We came in the restaurant on a Friday night and it wasn't too busy. We sat down and I ordered the special which was a sweet/sour meat combo dish and the bf got the lau lau dish. I thought my dish was pretty tasty--I think it was some kind of sweet pork and fried chicken? The bf's dish was a little salty but he said the dish was okay. I liked my macaroni salad that came with my dish. Our server was pretty nice and the food came out quick which was surprising!
I would come back and try the other dishes.

Aaaah I finally got to try out this place. Delicious!!! As a native of Hawaii, I've been on a quest to eat at all the Hawaiian places in Seattle and I think I've found the best at Kauai Family Restaurant.

I was really greedy and ordered a lot... well I didn't think it would be that much but the portions are quite generous! Another big plus. So I got the loco moco, a side of mac salad and a small bowl of lomi salmon. I can never find lomi salmon at the other restaurants so it was a must-order for me here.

My friend had the plate lunch with teriyaki chicken and pork. I tried a piece of her chicken and that was soooo ono-licious too! :)

Overall, I will be back, preferably on Saturdays to eat some malasadas! Yay! It's worth the drive to Georgetown for some good legit Hawaiian food.

Been there 5-6 times over the past three years. The Yelp reviews here are SO over-hyped.

Service: Hit and miss. I've had everything from friendly to rude. So it's a crap shoot. Take your chances. And, almost every time we've been there, a side had to be scratched from the bill, because they didn't bring it and didn't come around so that we could remind them to bring it. (That's right, you probably won't get your side of mac salad!) So it's a crap shoot.

Food: Sorry, low quality ingredients. Been to several Hawaiian food places in Seattle that use a much higher quality of ingredients. Loco Moco uses low quality hamburger (you know it when you taste it). Hawaiian fried rice not as flavorful as it should be, skimping on those bits of Portuguese sausage and spam that make it tasty at other places.

The only reason to go here is to get a piece of Chantilly cake from the cooler. In every other respect, several other Hawaiian places in Seattle outshine this place, which is hard to get to, has limited parking, limited hours, and doesn't warrant all these 4 and 5 star reviews.

Got a few http://restaurant.com gift certificates to this place, but I won't be using them - after this many visits, I'm done. Even though it's a much further drive for me, the food and service at Kona Kitchen is SO much better. Go there instead.

This place is definitely better than any of the other Hawaiian spots in Seattle. Don't get me wrong, because I do like this restaurant, but at the same time I don't feel like it's anything that is out of this world. It is, however, good, simple, and filling.

I come here when I get a little craving for their bbq chicken. It's yummy and not the typical style of bbq you might think of. The macaroni salad is pretty awesome as well. The loco moco is friggin' enormous and the spam musubi is like... almost the size of a brick. I made the mistake of ordering one with my meal instead of to-go to snack on later and holy cow, I couldn't finish it or my meal.

Friendly service too... but they don't always refill my water :(

    I LOVE THIS PLACE.

Sure it has negatives - ambiance, hours, temperature inside (I don't think they run the heat in the winter - bring a coat), service (one poor girl serving ten tables). But it still gets a five. The food is that good and the price can't be beat.

My only complaint is that they are closed on Sunday's and only open for dinner Thursday and Friday nights. And that I just found out about the place after being in Seattle eight years.

    SLOW SLOW SLOW service!!!!!!!
OK. The first time I ate there, service took forever... Food was so-so.  They get all kinds of local plate lunch stuffs, but MAN.  The service ABSOLUTELY SUCKED!  So, years (like 5 or so) went by and I was craving some local food, and decided to try it out again, thinking that the service go better.  Boy, was I WRONG.  BIG TIME.  It got WORSE.  My wife and I were seated fairly quickly, but waited for a waitress to take our order.  Never happened.  Got some delicious water and that was it.  Some other people that got seated AFTER us got their orders in!!!!  So being patient, we waited. And waited.  And waited.  So finally, we got up and left.  I'm just glad the Hawaii BBQ joint up in the U-District is around... so we went there where we were promptly seated and served.  NEVER coming back to Kauai's.

Here is a testament to how I feel about the food at Kauai Family Restaurant:

Last Saturday, hungover as I've been since I was about 20, I managed to drag my sorry rear down to Georgetown (after retrieving my car from Belltown) for a much needed to-go order lunch.  Seriously, I needed carbs, fried food, and something that was flavorful but still mellow.

So it was about 1 pm when I got there, and the place was packed.  Awesome.  I can wait.  So, I waited 10 minutes to order because there were so many orders to take in front of mine.  I waited another 35 or so minutes to get the food.  And then I was on my way back home.

And you know what? It was worth it.  The Hawaiian chicken combo meal I got (that comes with the rice and delicious mac salad) is a large portion.  Since I needed something fried, I also got the 6 piece of the crispy ginger chicken, and oh my goodness, that was good stuff.  It did have that ginger taste to it, but it wasn't so overwhelming that it took away from the chicken.  Yum.  Plus, I got four meals out of the two orders. Holla!

In spite of how long I was there (several people who came in after me left before even ordering), they were sweet and offered me water while I waited.  I was lucky and snagged a solo table (hey, I wasn't in the mood for being communal!), but everyone else seemed to be enjoying each other's company!

In summary, yes.  Go to there, you will not regret it.

The service is very friendly and everyone seems to know each other there.

Love their mac salad! I didn't try much my first time there, but I did love my loco moco. The meat was perfectly cooked -- not tough and chewy like many other loco mocos I've had. Definitely looking forward to trying more.
