This one doesn't open as early as the ones on Oahu and is pretty small in comparison, but it's mellow. I love coming here for the Hawaiian food truck which sells this super tasty taro mochi (get the one with mac nuts encrusted on top). I also ordered the bbq kalua pork sandwich (without cheese cause that is just weird) and it was pretty good except they should consider using a thinner bun or something..too much bread and sesame.
I heard the Monster Tacos food truck is good, but unfortunately it was not there when I went. Will have to try it next time. -
Review from Toni M.
We noticed a sign for this market passing the college a couple of days ago, so we decided to return today to check it out. The big farmers market in Koloa isn't until Monday and we needed papayas to carry us through until then. It was new since that last time we were here, but I didn't realize quite how new until I started researching it for this review. According to the Honlulu Advertiser it opened October 10. Here's the article: http://www.honoluluadv... We saw tents and tables from the road. We drove on campus, parked in the lot and walked over. The first stand we came to had bags of rambutan for $5. Total score! I love rambutan and when we come in the spring it's not in season. We saw another stand w/ big, yellow star fruit, lady finger bananas and small sunrise papayas. We bought the first two and skipped the last as too small and too expensive at $2.50 each.
Another stand had goat cheese. The woman's first question was whether we'd tasted goat cheese and I said we'd just been at Surfing Goat in Maui. Her rejoinder: "Ours is better!" I tasted some, the first w/ artichokes and pesto, I think, the other w/ garlic and olive oil. The first was grainy, the second was smooth and we bought a container to have at breakfast.
Walking through further we saw a stand selling gelato, another selling cut flowers and several selling live plants. There were quite a few stands and prices were good. We came to a stand selling good size papayas, a large one for $2 and a smaller one for $1.50. They had longan, which I'd seen signs for on roadside trucks but was unfamiliar w/. It's like a rambutan or a lychee, w/ a shell that needs to be peeled off. The woman gave me one to try but it was too sweet for me, closer to a lychee than a rambutan. We stocked up, using the bags from Big Save that Alan cleverly suggested bringing along.
The market is Saturdays from 10-1 and is well worth a stop, even a special tripListed in: Aloha Kauai
