Hubby wanted to do this for his birthday, so we read the Yelp reviews & signed up for some dirty fun.  They call you to confirm if you sign up online & they give you some basic info., though they don't suggest wearing your bathing suit, which is a must if you plan to swim at the water fall. They also don't mention that flip-flops aren't okay for the swimming hole - you must have shoes that are held on your heel with a strap. Wear reef shoes if you have them, otherwise tennis shoes work.

As others have suggested, bring a bandana or buy one at check-in for $2 - it's a little bit of money well spent.  They provide pants, a t-shirt, rubber boots if you want, though I wore my own tennis shoes & they're no worse for wear. They also supply a helmut & goggles.

We rode the ATVs & they were a blast.  We had been hoping for some rainy weather to get seriously muddy, but it didn't happen.  There was one stream to cross & I caught some good water by powering thru. The switch-backs going uphill near the end of the tour were super fun - you could power around the corners & get the ATV rear end to slip around.

The old sugar mill property is lovely & they point out the mtns where many movies have been filmed.  Not too much blah, blah, blah on the history, which is a good thing since these guys aren't historians.  Our guides were Dan & Pat.  Dan lead the group while Pat took the pictures & made sure no one was left behind.

All in all a fun tour that I recommend.

I was looking forward to getting really dirty and more rugged terrain.  Overall, it was great and we all had a blast but I prefer Maui's ATV tours.

I recently went on a family trip to Kauai and one thing that I wanted to do was some sort of ATV tour.  I selected this particular one because of some other reviews from Yelp and other sites.  I have to say that I have no regrets in doing so.  From beginning to end the team at Kauai ATV was extremely professional, safe and SO entertaining!  Our tours guides were hilarious.  If you manage to get Pat and Erik you'll be in for a good time.  They not only made sure everyone was ok, they took the time to make sure they explained the historical significance of where we were driving.  It made me appreciate the ride 10 times more.  I was with a pretty large group, some in the buggy and some on the ATV.  Either way you'll have a lot of fun.  You will for sure get dirty so wear clothes that you won't mind loosing.  Although they do provide pants and shirt the mud will soak into your clothes.  The waterfall stop was awesome!  You get to spend some time in a waterfall lagoon and have lunch with the group.  They provided us with a sandwich, mac salad, drink and a cookie.  It was perfect as we still needed to hop back on the ATV and drive back so it wasn't so much food that you just wanted to fall over and sleep.  It is true what others are saying that at first you may be like.. Oh.. this isn't so dirty BUT just wait... as the tour goes on they bring you to pools of mud and dirt.  SO FUN!  While it would be cool to have  your own camera, just know that it will get dirty.  They do take tons of pictures and they are all great shots.  1 person bought the CD in our group and would recommend that as well.  All in all I would totally do this again and if you are in Kauai this is a must do!!

This is one of the best times I have ever had. I was a little skeptical, but we had SO MUCH FUN it was unreal!

You basically start out at their place in Koloa...about a 30 minute drive from Lihue on Kauai. Check in at their store, pay for your tour, and buy any souvenirs. I recommend buying a handkerchief if you did not bring one...it's $2 and will keep most of the dirt out of your nose and mouth. Well worth it!!!

You check in, they give you a brief idea of what the day will be like, and then give you directions to the old sugar mill, a couple miles away. This is where they base their operation out of.

You get to choose between a single 4 wheel ATV, a 2 person mud buggy (highly recommended!!!) or a 4 person ATV wagon (didn't look too fun). They suggest you wear your swimsuit, and then they give you clothes to wear. Wear them and their rubber boots or bring clothes you absolutely don't care about. You will get them dirty with Hawaiian red dirt...it will not come out! So they give you camo pants and a t-shirt, plus a helmet, goggles and a rag to wipe your goggles off.

They give you a basic safety lesson, go over hand signals...stop, slow down, etc. And then you get strapped in, and they take you on a 10 minute basic course to make sure you are comfortable driving the buggy or ATV, through some old sugar cane fields.

After that, the game is on! You get to go through the cane fields, up the side of a mountain on old trails, through a tunnel, up to a couple of waterfalls where if you go on the morning tour you get a picnic lunch...sandwiches, chips, drinks...nothing special, but decent quality. And you get to swim in the second waterfall, which is cool...knocks some of the dirt off.

Our tour guides were THE BOMB!!! They were funny, friendly, really made sure we had a good time, told us cool stories about the history of the area and just were great guys. If you go, ask to be on a tour with Keoki and Marty Boy. Keoki is a veteran of many years...he knows the trails and his equipment. Marty Boy is a newer guy, but he's really good and takes great pictures that you can buy on a CD after the tour for $21.00...not bad considering they don't recommend you take your digital camera on the tour...WISE ADVICE!!! They have  a special encased camera...and Marty Boy will take a picture of whatever you like...really accomodating.

At the end of the tour, I gave them a tip for just being really great guys. They earn their money!

I just can't say enough about this trip! It was 4 hours, cost the driver $165, and the passenger $145, you get lunch, but you get to just cut loose and have a blast! Bumpy roads, up and down hills, through the jungle, through a mountain tunnel, through mud puddles! We were filthy (they have showers and changing rooms there, so take a change of clothes!), but it was just awesome! I highly recommend doing this if you are on Kauai!

I did not want to ride on my own so YES, my husband and I had the 2 rider buggy.  It was sooo fun!  Get ready to get really dirty and I mean dirrrttyyy.  Mud, water, mud and more water.  At first, i thought - ah...this is nothing but when we got deeper into the tour - DIRTY!!!  Our tour guide was really funny (forgot his name, I just remembered that he's Filipino).  Don't worry about taking your camera - they take lots of photos for you.  I still brought my camera with me and was very careful in protecting it from the mud.  Read the other two reviews on here - I do not want to repeat myself...they are both right on!

Unless it rains a lot before you go its not as muddy as they lead you to believe, they had us follow them through small puddles to get muddy even though most of the road was dry.  Still, lots of fun and the guides are very cool.  Say hi to Kekoa and Jason, they are a funny pair.

read what Jerry M. has to say. very accurate.

if you go to kauai, this is a MUST to do! one of the "funnest" things i've done in my life. basically, you just go riding around in ATV's, with several stops along the way, including this cave thing that we got to walk through. it's just an awesome experience that you must try.

i highly recommend you bringing a handkerchief to keep over your mouth and nose during the drive. it is really dirt-y and can get muddy, especially after it rained. i had to keep my hands over my nose and mouth the whole time, and even then, i came out with a fat dirt beard.

they give you clothes to wear. but if you plan on wearing your own shoes, bring something you won't mind dirtying. same with your swimming suit that you're wearing underneath. EVERYTHING is going to get dirty. (don't even get me started about boogies! let's just say, there'll be a lot of nose cleaning afterwards...) my shoes still have red dirt stains all over it.

they also suggest that you buy water socks/shoes because you visit a waterfall and you can go play in it. warning: VERY COLD WATER!

you have a main tour guide and one other person who goes around taking pictures of everything and everyone, and you can purchase those pictures on a cd at the end for 21 bucks. it's actually a very good deal, as there are a lot of pictures.

i'd definitely do this again if i come back here. it's seriously loads of fun. and of course, loads of laughs if your ATV gets stuck (HA!) or your face all of a sudden has a nasty five o'clock shadow. good times, man, good times.

It was enjoyable, but I must confess that I enjoy wave runners over ATVs.  Maybe because it was so hot and dusty the day I went (I only did the ride, not the dips into the waterfalls).  That said, it was more fun than I antcipated.  Be prepared to get DIRTY.  The soil in the area was red due to the high ferric iron content, so we all suffered from red nose gobblins afterwards.

I do not consider myself an ATV type of person or someone who loves getting muddy and dirty.  Even so,  I had a blast!  My husband and I were on our own separate ATVs.  If you have children under 16, then you need to rent a Mudbug, which didn't look as though it was as much fun as an ATV, but I could be wrong.  Our tour guides, Hillary and Pete, were funny, encouraging and friendly.  Two big thumbs up for them.  We took the three-hour Koloa tour.   The scenery was breathtakingly beautiful. The dust was breathtaking too.  At a minimum, wear the goggles they provide.  Bringing a bandanna (or buying one at the Kauai ATV Tour store) is a smart idea.  Don't take your camera, just buy the CD at the end of the tour.  You need closed-toe shoes and the only ones I had were white court shoes--I am sure glad I swapped those out for the rubber boots they provide.  I would encourage you to do the same unless you don't care if your shoes get completely thrashed.  Afterward, everyone is caked in mud and dirt.  You wash off as much as you can in the cold water, open-air showers, change back into your clothes and then shower again at your hotel.  This is one tourist activity that is worth the time and money.  I highly recommend it.
