I started frequenting Katz for Bagels once a weekend when I discovered they brewed Rodgers coffee, my go-to-by the cup of choice! I prefer Rodger's since I don't get the hipster grief of waiting in line for a delicious cup of overpriced coffee.
The bagels, though are what get me to come back each weekend. I adore the bagel choices, though you must get there early to get the full gamut. My favorite is the jalapeno bagel with bacon, cream cheese and tomatoes. It is loaded with bacon, the cream cheese and tomatoes are the background and are perfectly paired to cut the saltiness out of all that bacon!
I usually order the lox bagel for my friend and I get a bite once and a while. It is delicious, smeared thick with cream cheese AND lox. They don't scrooge you on the good stuff!
Why should you go? There is good coffee and breakfast all over the mission, I know. But this little corner shop that has three of the same, not overly nice not rude at all women working! I like them early in the morning, they put a smile on my not made up face and I forget that my hair literally just came off my pillow minutes prior. The place is big enough to dine in, quick enough to get to go, the music is good and the crowd is diverse. -

This is a little hipster dive spot for bagels.
Cash only. Service can be a little slow, but my bagel with cream cheese, tomato and bacon was delish! -

(See pics) Review #1105. Same good bagels as the one in SOMA-- good number of selections and were fresh. Coffee was good and they also make specialty coffees. Something to try next time.
On an interesting note, this place looks like it used to be a bar or diner as it has a long bar style table. It also has a wall full of pictures that seemed to be a bit out of place for a quick breakfast place. It does look like it can be a nice and spacious place to have a leisure time if you want to spend an hour (or a few) to hang around or to do some writing. -

I was at Kilowatt and went across the street to Katz to get a slice of pizza. I tried the pesto one, and was bummed to see the dude put the slice in the microwave....I've never seen a pizza-by-the-slice place use the microwave before. However, the pizza wasn't bad - I had a few beers already, so maybe I'm remembering it better than it actually was though.
At $3 for a slice of microwaved pizza, I'd say skip this place - especially with so many other choices around. -

This morning at Katz I witnessed what was hands-down the grossest thing I have ever seen in food services from this side of the exchange. This is a huge statement given that I've eaten at least one meal out every day since the 90s. Here's what I saw:
An elderly man, presumably related to the boss & his family, went behind the counter with a pair of dirty children's flip-flops. He proceeded to clean the flip-flops on the sandwich board while it was being used. When he was finished, he didn't even bother to wipe it down. He just walked away like nothing happened. I was sitting at the counter not 5 feet from this spectacle in absolute shock. My lady friend couldn't even finish her bagel. It was that disgusting.
Tip for the middle aged man running the place: If that's your dad, dude, keep him the fuck out of your kitchen. -

I went over to Katz Bagels because I thought I would hop in to get a quick bagel. But I ended up waiting in line for 20 minutes. I understand that maybe someone called in sick or they were short handed for whatever reason. But the wait time was frustrating. When I did get a chance to place my order, I didn't have to wait very long. I didn't order coffee because I saw how long it takes them to drip their coffee per order...so I went with a soda to cut down on the turn around time.

It's decent pizza! Okay, that wasn't a stellar review. It's perfectly fine pizza, better than some of the other quick pizza stops. But to be honest, i don't come for the pizza so much as i do for the jazz on friday nights. I also dig the posters from the Fillmore on the walls.

I walk by this place every morning on my way to BART and see a line out the door for fresh bagels... seems promising, right?
I finally stopped by here on a Sunday morning (surprisingly not as busy as it is during the week) and got one of the "fresh" bagels. I hate to say it but... meh... these were small, dry and pretty flavorless. My boyfriend got an everything which should be renamed "everything-falls-off" this (quickly) plain bagel. The egg, cheese and bacon in the bagel were fine... nothing special.
I will say the honey-date cream cheese spread was delicious. Definitely the best part of the place. As others have said, it is pretty cheap... but honestly, I left craving your standard Bruegger's or even Panera bagel which ultimately are probably comparable price wise, but a lot better than what I'd hope would be a great local joint.
Oh well. Guess I'll have to try the pizza eventually too... -

Pizza review: actually really good and cheap if you buy a whole pizza.
The downside is that the pizzas are pre-made and then just popped in the oven when you order so you cannot really personalize or make any substitutions. The benefit of this is that the pizza comes out super fast.
Oh if you are one of those people that freaks out when the help doesn't speak English, don't come here. -

Yet another Katz Bagel! Yay!
I'm a Katz fan. The Mission Katz is much nicer on the inside than the downtown Katz. There's more seating, the air is cooler, and the are on the walls is funkier. These are all positives.
The negatives appear to be slower service and less lox in the lox spread. Don't bogart the lox!
Tried Katz's coffee for the first time and though it was really good. Not blue bottle but much better than most. -

Nice people, great bagels, great price, tight jams, amazingly good orange juice, beer, pizza, and they even have a bar to sit at.
Sadly,
No cradle, no silver spoon.
No little boy blue, or man in the moon.
Close enough for jazz. I love this place hard. -

I may have still been drunk or buzzed, but this place has the best late night pizza ever! ...Actually, let's say in SF, since I had an awesome late night pizza in Miami once.
I don't know if it'd be the same if I were completely sober, since I don't go to the Mission much during the day, but I hope it is. I'll have to try it sometimes and re-edit this review when I do. -

I have wanted to stop by Katz for a while. I frequent the Mission and 16th St BART a lot and this is always on my route away from or going towards my lovely East Bay shuttle. I finally stumbled into Katz this past Sunday.
I like the low prices. I actually paid more for an egg and cheese bagel in Berkeley than here. Well, 3.25 vs. 3.5. I loved that the scrambled eggs were super fresh and not the stored up patties. I did feel like there could have been more cheese on the bagel. The bagel itself, an everything, was solid, but not spectacular. I also came here after having slept about 5 hours, so that could have influenced my impressions and opinions. -

This place is the 'KATZ' meow!
Step into a zen like atmosphere outside of the bustling 16th street atmosphere for a warm bagel and a hot caffeinated drink.
The bagels were good and the spread was delish. An everything bagels with chive schmear topping with thinly slices onions and an apple juice ran me just under 5 bills.
Yelp has steered me right again!Listed in: The Bay!

When I entered Katz Bagels, Led Zeppelin was playing form the loudspeakers. That and the décor (green and yellow walls and old, framed concert posters) give the place an extra star because I wasn't that impressed with the food.
I ordered a large latte for $3, which was about the same size as a tall at Starbucks (which I also think costs around $3). To that an egg sandwich consisting of scrambled eggs, tomato, basil, and mozzarella. It was tasty, but fairly small, I could have eaten two. I didn't... going to Europe next week so I guess this was a good preparation. Many other places serve their coffee in a real cup when you don't get it to go, which I suggest Katz Bagel to do too for a more welcoming and friendly impression. -

The breakfast bagels (and coffee!) are great. Toasted just right...and like Jeremy G. said below, the eggs are very fresh -- not artificial-looking space patties.
The lady owner working this place, though...sheesh. Talk about an icy-cold reception. I almost feel like I'm annoying or inconveniencing her when I order even a coffee.
This may very well be a cultural-difference issue (she appears to be Middle Eastern), but I feel most unwelcome whenever I visit Katz. -

I have a feeling I'm really going to regret writing this review.
This place allegedly makes bagels and operates as a cafe during the daytime, I have no idea if this is true.
What I can tell you is that at night they make the best "by the slice" pizza in the Mission. The crust is thin and not doughy or gritty at all, the sauce is tangy and fresh tasting, just writing this review is making my mouth water.
For best results I suggest waiting until a pizza comes out of the oven and ask for two pieces of it , you will want two, regardless of the toppings. Also if you are coming from a bar don't wait till last call because the place gets crowded and I've been there when they've run out of pizza.
Now go forth and make this place so crowded I can't get in. -

This is the pattern of the night it seems every time before hitting up Katz at 2 or 3am for a slice of drunk pizza. It's always so good, however they're probably still super good not drunk.
Until reading other reviews just now, I had no idea Katz were actually a bagel place? Really? Hrmmmmmm....*shrugs* -

Bagel? I didn't see a single bagel in the place!
Then again, this is a place that, if you're cruising down 16th, is right before the infamous danger dog cart http://static.px.yelp....
Affordable, quick, and ready to heat up any cold slices, Katz provides sustenance for anybody hopping around the Mission in search of fermented organics induced hunger. This is not even as close to CPK (the easy standard), but it works when you need it.
There are some wonderful murals on the walls and the pizzas come out on a regular basis. Just be mindful that this isn't going to even close to the best pizza you've ever had, but it's good enough for those times when you need to eat. The vegetarian slice comes packed with toppings http://static.px.yelp...., although during the late evening, the meat topped slices are far few and in between.
Not too bad, but I think I'd rather pay for a danger dog... -

Let me paint you a picture. It was Halloween 2009. I was dressed as a dodge ball player, complete with short shorts, knee high socks, a headband, wrist bands, and a dodge ball. I trekked my way over to the Mission after a night of mellow partying. I wanted to eat.
It took me a while to realize that the place we stumbled into was actually Katz Bagels. Since all we ordered was a pizza. Conversation below.
Me: let's just get a medium. We're not THAT hungry. I don't want to have pizza sitting in the backseat of my car.
P: OK.
I go off to the restroom. P goes to the counter. M is holding the table down.
P (to the cashier): We'll have a medium...erm...large...I mean extra large margherita pizza.
Me (in the restroom): am I hearing him correctly?
I come out, M and P sitting at the table with goofy smiles on their faces. I told them I already knew about the extra large order. Hardy har har.
We finished it all in 10 minutes. Go team. No leftovers in the car for me!
Let me know if you want to borrow my dodge balls. They're just sitting in my room collecting dust! -

Dear Aloof Former Neighbor,
I thought that the first time I saw you in here was a mere coincidence, and that I would never see you again, but to my mounting dismay, it seems that you too have made Katz your preferred breakfast spot.
This is absolutely unacceptable. (What's a posh beezy like you "slummin'" it in my neighborhood anyway?)
Let's just get one thing straight: Katz is *MY* bagel spot!!!
Gitcherown!
Unapologetically,

Let's just say that Katz Bagels has friendly employees, whole wheat everything bagels, a willingness to accommodate my "open-faced-bagel" requests, and an awesome pesto-garlic cream cheese that I *really* wish others didn't have access to.Listed in: Hangover Helpers

Arinell was closed, so I stopped by here prior to Gestalt to fortify my stomach for an evening of beer-by-the-liter. Asked for two slices of pizza, and they made them from dough. Can't say it wasn't fresh.
When it was done, I picked up a slice and everything promptly fell off of it. It was pretty soggy and hard to eat. It has potential for a good NY kind of slice, but as it is now, it's just a big, greasy, sloppy mess. Given these other reviews, I'm sure Katz's is good for other stuff, but don't bother with the pizza. -

Running too late for breakfast?
Get breakfast anyway!
I think this is the perfect place to run in and get some actual food quick.
Plenty of butter and calories for those who care.
You know but if it didn't - it wouldn't be any good.

I don't think these ladies have ever listened to me when I say non-fat latte but I'm glad they don't. Their lattes are bangin'.
Katz is a straight-forward bagel joint, I'm not sure you can really fuck up a bagel, but this is my fave morning bagel spot. Wheat, cream cheese, tomato.
This is also my fave 3am pizza spot. Try their drunk slice - you'll love yourself for it. -

I really wanted a bagel with honey date cream cheese the other day. It's 1:15 in the afternoon. I'm on a 15 minute break. I work 2 blocks (if that) away, but this seems like a marathon as I'm HUNGRY and in need of HONEY DATE CREAM CHEESE. I can picture it - mediocre bagel, slightly burnt or under-toasted because they never seem to perfect the toast timing, oozing with SUPPLE, MOIST, SCRUMPTIOUS, um...what other words make people cringe?....HONEY DATE CREAM CHEEEEEESE.
And so by now, I'm hot, sweaty and winning in a wet t-shirt contest. I jump over a homeless guy getting arrested in front of Delirium, check myself out in the window of Monk's Kettle, SO CLOSE, and then I get ready to make the left into Katz and....GREAT. THEY'RE CLOSED.
This means I have wasted the vast majority of my 15 minute break, I have lost my matte complexion and dry clothing, not to mention my dignity, and I am hungry, delirious, and in front of Delirium. GOD, WHY?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
So I kick and scream my way back to work and starve until my lunch because when I crave honey date cream cheese, it's just a ridiculous assumption to believe that I could be satisfied with just any old cream cheese. Psh.
Later that night, I see the OPEN sign beaming in Katz and smell the wafting scent of pizza. What the hell kind of hours are these, Katz, and why the hell can't I buy a side of H.D.C.C. with my pizza?
Point deducted for offering toffuti cream cheese (in plain and chive!) Not because I don't like it or don't think it's awesome to offer alternatives...only because it means when I politely and routinely throw out the, "anyone want anything?" and disclose that I'm trekking to Katz, the vegans at work will snatch up the opportunity and I'll spend my break watching the cream cheese spread. I guess if it's honey date cream cheese, I'm ok with that. -

Pretty close to a NY bagel. Sometimes they have an off day and you get an undercooked or stale bagel.
Great spreads, decent coffee, and the fast service make me happy. It's not a comfy place to sit though.
It's breakfast quick and dirty, just how it should be. -

NOTE: I have never actually purchased a Katz Bagel from a Katz location - just through other coffee shops and local grocers that sell their product.
I feel especially close to the bagel in general as I seem to have developed a bagelish excess around my mid section. I may be a bagel enthusiast.
One of the main reasons I enjoy Katz Bagels above others is the texture. In my vain (not vain enough that I would cut my bagel consumption to lessen my bagel baggage) attempt to eat whole grains - I try to stick to the Whole Wheat bagel. Katz Bagels make me feel heart-healthy AND allow me to enjoy flavor by making a whole wheat "everything" (WWE) bagel. Yum.
Also awesome, due to my frequent enjoyment of a Katz WWE with cream cheese in the car on my way to work I have started my own mobile farm...sesame plants have begun sprouting in my car interior! -

It's rare to see a place with such mixed reviews, so I feel obligated to chime in. I never approach Katz Bagels thinking that it will replicate the bagels I enjoyed in the Tri-State area-thus, I am not disappointed. I've noticed that their bagels feature such small holes as to sometimes be mistaken for a hard roll. But on weekend mornings when I can't deal with the crowds or the calorie count at Tartine, it's an okay place to get a bagel for carryout. I take the bagel home, toast it up, and smear it with Trader Joe's hummus, and I'm no longer hungry. Certainly not worthy of a trip across town, but if you're in the neighborhood...
Yes, it's a hassle that Katz's is cash only. They somewhat make up for this shortcoming by offering the NY Times for sale and Diet Coke in cans. Any questions? -

These are good bagels, and early enough on a Saturday morning, easy to drive to/not be in 16th crowds, and WAY better than any other place around (save for House of Bagels, which are the BEST in SF, but on the other side of town).
Loved my experience popping in for a dozen to bring to a friend's brunch. The cream cheeses are great (the honey-some/nut) which does make it more desirable to House of Bagels and its reasonably priced.
At 11am they were out of Everythings, which I think is fairly atrocious since that's the only way I can truely judge a bagel against its siblings.
My only saddness: why did I live in the mission 10 blocks away for so long without making this place a stop for a weekly supply every now and again. What a(n east-coast) treat! -

KILLER PIZZA, MAN.
I came here with some friends to try and soak up some of the leftover alcohol in our stomachs from the night before. They all got bagels, but I went for the pizza. Everybody seemed very pleased with the bagels and vegan cream cheese options, but I was flipping out over the pizza. One of the best slices I've ever had.
I saw the sign saying you could order it by the slice so I went for it. I didn't know they'd make it entirely fresh! The workers got to work kneading some dough and slapping together a pizza to my liking. I felt pretty crappy about it, actually. Fifteen minutes or so later, my pizza was ready. By now my friends had all finished their bagels, but that was alright. No hurry I guess.
I got the KATZ PIZZA, which has a bunch of stuff on it that I don't remember, plus basil, artichoke hearts, tomatoes, arugala, and prosciutto. In my still-drunken state it didn't click to me that prosciutto was meat, so when I got my pizza I took that stuff off. I wasn't about to have them remake an entire pizza just because of my ignorance.
I took a picture of my pizza and it's posted up in the photos section, if you want to check it out. It was thin crust, but not too thin. Way gourmet tasting, blows the heck out of Z Pizza and whatever else we have here in Southern California. Highly recommended. -

The event planner insisted that I get two dozen Katz Bagels. This place seems like a place for depressed poor bloggers to get their angst out onto the ethernet. Even the cashier had that three day old greasy hairstyle look and pathos on the brain. Maybe Katz sold his place..not as much of a Mission Mensch as he may have been ten years ago.
They were ok and she was happy. PARKING SUCKS unless you park about ten blocks away or pray that your parking karma is turned on high.
I don't get what all the fuss was about, but whatevah...the Valencia scene-sters get the Katzs and my secret passion...Bi-Rite burnt caramel ice cream... -

Greatest bagels on the west coast--and this is coming from an east coast guy.
The pizza I cannot rate, and it only loses a star because it quite often becomes seriously packed.
As far as things go out here, spreads, schmears, bagels, etc, this is the only real bagel shop in the city. -

Review for KATZ BAGELS' PIZZA: Unfortunately, NOT pizza with a bagel crust which I've encountered in Venice Beach of all places (late night pizza goodness), and if you're familiar with Katz' pizza bagels sold at Rainbow Grocery, then you can understand when I heard that Katz on 16th had pizza I HAD to find out whether it was a bagel crust.
Unfortunately (again), they are touting themselves as thin crust, and it just doesn't cut it. Tonight was my first foray into their 'Mission' pizza: pepperoni, sausage, white onion, black olives with mozz and red sauce. Well, the sauce was yum if not a little salty but that may have been the black olives which are super salty (at least proves they're fresh). And, the crust while thin is NOT crispy which where I've been (New York, Chicago) thin crust means crispy, or at least, not soggy which is when the pizza is wet (from the toppings and sauce leaching liquid) and easily folds down with cheese and toppings sliding off onto your lap if you're not lucky. I'm not wearing their toppings, but the crust was definitely soggy. There wasn't even char on the bottom (sign of a good, strong pizza oven)!
My friend said, "I don't like pizza that falls apart like this." This is not to say that the pizza was not good although he did say something about not liking the sausage which is probably because it's slices of sausage rather than crumbled sausage which some people prefer (I prefer SHAVED sausage). Again, good flavour-- sauce, toppings taste fresh (and LOOK fresh on the mise en place line which replaces the bagel smears and toppings from the breakfast shift)-- and you can't beat 16th street for atmosphere.
The crust still needs work-- it's very non-descript, if not overly chewy from overworked dough. This is not how their bagels taste-- they're perfectly chewy with that extra West Coast fluffliness (remember, it's the water here not the technique)-- so that would have been clever to taste in a pizza crust (would it have tasted like a hotpocket?), at least the tangy flavour of boiled dough would have been more interesting than what they've got going now.
The pizza at katz is relatively new, so I'll wait for them to work out the kinks. The other pizza designs look promising-- the Kat's pizza: arugula, chokes, prosciutto, parmesan (viva los foodies!)-- so I'll check them in a few months. They better hook it up real fast though, as Little Star appears to be opening a satellite on 14th and Mish. -

I've never tried the pizza here, so just check my review for the bagels. Also, I'm not a bagel person, so you should probably ignore my opinion. In fact, just don't bother reading my review. All that aside...
It was 8am, I was jetlagged, and I was really hungry. And somehow, SOMEHOW, I had a bagel urge. This generally doesn't happen to me, so I dunno where it came from! Maybe it was because pretty much every other place in the Mission was closed at 8am... So anyhow, I got two bagels from here, the sesame, which was ok, and the multi seeded something, which was very tasty. I then bought some raw chorizo, bell pepper, spinach, and green onion in one of the little Mexican marts around, and cooked it all together and ate it like a bagel taco. BTW, it was tasty. So in conclusion, if you have an 8am urge to make bagel tacos, you should probably go here. Otherwise, ignore me. 3.5 Stars. -

Katz. Oh Katz. I used to live in literally a stones throw away from Katz (i tried hitting the bagel saucer once from my roof...ok so i didn't but if I had wanted to I could have!) Needless to say they were responsible for about 4 out of 5 breakfasts I had on the way to work.
I love the bagels, just like my jewish grandma made (if she were a bagel maker which she is not...but she is jewish...). The spreads are amazing (try my fav. dill cucumber). And even after not living there for 2 years the staff still remembers my name. I feel like i'm on cheers. -
Review from Angela H.
My past experience with bagels was eating those crappy ones that are frozen that my mom bought from Costco. So, I never understood why anybody would ever ever want to eat a bagel...
UNTIL NOW.
Fresh bagels every morning at Katz! Yum! Toasted, with cream cheese, with cheese, with bacon, with egg--anything! They slather on the cream cheese too. It's amazing. There are about 8 or so different kinds too...but I like my onion bagels. =)
If you're an espresso buff, I wouldn't come here. It's usually not good or "made with love," as my boyfriend would describe it.
But if you want a bagel, you MUST GO HERE. I will not eat a bagel anywhere else. I actually crave Katz bagels sometimes.
I also really really love and appreciate that they make sure to touch your bagels/food with gloves, and take off their gloves when handling money. I've never seen people so good about this. Usually you'll see people at other food places use gloves, but then they end up handling money and food with the gloves.
Their pizza late at night...well it's definitely good if you're drunk. I don't know if you want to eat it when sober though.
