Great place to get your exercise fix in if you're in the Uptown area and don't feel like being confined to a treadmill. There's not much to say without reiterating what others have already said, but I do have to agree with Chris that, despite the recent crimes, it's not anymore dangerous than anywhere else in the city.

Plus, Friends of Katy Trail are working hard to get volunteer "VIPs" who will patrol the trail in pairs during most hours of the day. The trail is also lit all the way up the Knox now.

More like where Dallas' young and old go to get mugged.  After seeing the lady interviewed from her hospital bed back around Christmas - beaten for the sheer joy of it, I'm a little hesitant to head back to the trail.  Dallas has stepped up their crime watch, but there are definitely places where you feel a little isolated and creepy if you're out there in non-peak times.... but it is a cool green space, so stick to daylight, preferably with a friend or during busy workout hours.

Where Dallas' young and old hotties come to sweat, see, and be seen.  What else would you expect from our fair city?

Anyway, whether you run, walk, stroll, bike, or, uh, rollerblade, get your sweet ass to the Katy Trail today.

While the Katy Trail may still be a work in progress, it gets an easy 5 stars for being the second best place to run/bike/walk in Dallas.  The Katy Trail runs along an abandoned railroad track right through Uptown and Dallas.  Eventually, it will span from the AAC up near SMU and then cross 75 and hook up with White Rock trail.  The existing trail is roughly 3.5 miles one way and there are 4 water fountains on the trail.

Because Dallas is generally a lousy place to bike or run, this is your best bet to go for exercise if you live in the city and don't want to worry about being run over by some redneck in his pickup truck or hummer.  While it can't compare to the crown jewel of the city - White Rock lake - it's still a great resource that the city should be proud of, especially since they are continually making it better.

Edit:  In response to the comment about the mugging, Katy Trail is no more prone to crime than other parts of the city.  That was a fairly isolated incident in much the same way as the local teacher who was recently mugged in a Tom Thumb parking lot at Preston and Beltline.  She had to have emergency brain surgery but that wouldn't prevent most people from shopping at Tom Thumb.

Crime happens but that's no reason to stop living or somehow think Katy Trail is inherently more dangerous than any other part of the city you wouldn't hesitate going.   You'd be more likely to get hurt in a car wreck than mugged on the Katy Trail.  Don't let that discourage you from enjoying a nice place to get outside.

How has this not been reviewed?!?!?

The Katy Trail is the environmental savior of Uptown. Granted, it's entire manufactured . . . but we live in Dallas right? We do it up right here!! We'll build our nature our own damn selves!

For those who don't know, the Katy trail is a 3.5 mile paved trail that runs from the American Airlines Center, basically to SMU. It's very secluded, in the fact that it only crosses 2 streets (Knox and Harvard). They have recently finished all but a few stretches of the rubber running trail, which is MUCH better for those with joint issues (I suddenly feel like I'm a 75 year old man who mixing up his Metamucil for the week and wondering when the Ed Sullivan show is going to come back on).

It's plenty wide enough to run with a partner, and the Friends of the Katy Tail  ( http://www.katytrailda... ) have done an amazing job with the upkeep and the landscaping of the trail. I actually saw 3 or 4 volunteers out there this morning when I went for a run.

The police have also stepped up their presence, which is very welcome. Safety first kids!

Overall, this is one of the gems of Dallas. It's so nice to be able to get a good, uninterrupted run in, without having to go to White Rock. The Katy Trail is like a mini Central Park, in that "If I didn't have some sort of nature in my life, I'd  lose my mind and not in a good way" way.

All of the contact info above is for Friends of the Katy Trail.

The actual trail runs North and South from where Airline dead ends to the AAC, and can be accessed in several places.

I work within spitting distance of the Katy Trail, and it's a great place to run after a long day of cubicles and excel spreadsheets.  I love that Dallas has created something like this, and I love that they are continuing to work on it. The soft trail is very much appreciated.  A few warnings, though - always have water with you because drinking fountains are severely limited.  And I'd avoid being there after dark.  I know this is a long term goal of The Friends of Katy Trail group, but as of now - it is not well lit and there is very little police presence.
