Now that I live in the 'hood, I'm really starting to enjoy and regularly(ish) visit Kate's.

I like stopping by about once a month for a beer and some half-priced Happy Hour food. I love that they have all the food prices slashed in half (instead of limiting it to a select few items).

So far I'll recommend the burger, house salad, and fish & chips. The meatloaf dinner was a-ok and the mac & cheese is only good if you love the mac in a cheesy soup (which is not really my style).

You know what I've learned from Kate's? Good things come in nondescript packages. This pub might not look like much from the outside, but trust me: it's a gem. Daily happy hour with $3 micro-brews and 1/2 off the entire menu? Hell to the yes. I've done some quality control on their French dip, hummus plate, crispy chicken salad, and quesadilla: it's all delish and the price is right.

After tossing back a few beers here, my roommate and I walked out all stupid and giggly.  We walked a few blocks and then heard someone yelling "Hey!" behind us. We turned around to see our awesome bartender running toward us with my debit card in hand. Now that's what I call service! Kate's has made a loyal customer out of me, that's for sure.

Came here after passing by this bar every day for the last month since moving into the neighborhood, so finally decided to give it a try during the 1/2 off everything HH right before heading to the Husky football game.  So glad I did!  Decent selection of beers, enough TVs, prompt service (even with only the bartender working the room), and good bar food.

I like the ambience of the place and also the pool table in the large back room.  I think I'll be returning here often throughout the next year.

Today's theme seems to be reviewing places i previously *loathed*. Under the previous ownership, this was a stinky white-hat infested craphole with a dicey bathroom and overpriced beer.

The key word there, kids, is "was."  This little hole in the wall classed it up a bit and became Kate's.

Nowadays, it's got good, simple, reasonably priced food. The fish and chips has proper fish and chips. The meatloaf looks good and tastes better. The mac and cheese tastes pretty good, too.

The service is spiffy and the beer selection broad and reasonable. HH runs 'til 7, a fact that makes me cheery, and you can get Mac and Jack's Serengeti Wheat without the slog to Redmond! Yeah!

Yes, there are still frat clones, but they're outnumbered. The bathroom is a little odd in its layout (bring a compass, girls!) but it's clean and tidy now.

All in all, it's a fine place to knock a few back with your friends near the UD, and that's the most awesome part of all!

I really like Kate's. Their Happy Hour is fantastic (half off ALL food and drink specials, 4-7pm EVERYday) and it's a fantastic place to spend a really relaxed weekday or weekend evening. The bartenders can get a little tense when it starts getting busy on weekends, but they're generally really nice. They have a wide range of beers from PBR to some higher end ones, and their taps change (I think). One of the few places I can get Mac&Jack's Serengeti Wheat. Their food is really solid, not gourmet, but very tasty. How many places can you get a big bowl of tummy-warming mac&cheese with pulled pork? mmmm.

They also have fun things going on during the week, like karaoke. I usually hate karaoke because I don't sing, but I always have fun at this one. Last time we were there we got rick-rolled, then some guys got the whole bar going CRAZY by singing "on a boat." They totally must have practiced that, it was tight (as in fully coordinated) and they were awesome. Also, free pool and free darts

The only downside for me is that parking is not always easy, but it's WAY easier than Ballard on a weekend, so it's not a big complaint. Keep it up, Kate's!

What a little hole-in-the-wall pub this place is! I've probably driven past it a hundred times, but the lure of trivia night got me in the door - and will probably bring me back!

I got there after the teams had formed up, but there was room for one more on Team Jack Bauer Power Hour (pics to follow shortly). This isn't your momma's trivial pursuit - this is SERIOUS stuff, such as "Name the countries involved in the Crimean War (Russia vs Great Britain, France, Sardinia (!), and the Ottoman Empire). Yeah, even though I was on a team of frickin' GENIUSES, we still didn't get that one. The questions aren't all of that caliber; there was a very fun "Name the Celeb" picture contest...none of the obvious Paris Hilton/Jake Gyllenhal/Brad Pitt type pics there either.

Drinks were cheap, and the place was PACKED, but I found the service to still be friendly and fast. The bartender was giving me a hard time about ordering a foo-foo drink (it was for Aaron E, dammit, and that's the story I'm sticking with), and there was no wait when it came time to settle the tab.

I didn't sample the food here, but the trivia challenge and the drink prices would be enough to get me back in the door!

The recent trivia night get together was my first visit to Kate's.

Working hard on scavenger hunt notes, I arrived early and as luck would have it, so did Naurry.

We snagged a table, ordered up and settled in to await the beginning of the games.

The waiter was pretty cool, and once realizing a large group of multiple teams was coming "with us", pulled tables together to accomodate.

I went with the meatloaf dinner and it was actually really good. I'm not sure why not everyone can make a decent meatloaf, but you'd be surprised how many people can f*ck up such a simple thing.

The service was good in my opinion, especially as the place really jam packed for trivia night. I had no issues with my tab or anything else, which was very cool.

Trivia was fun there, and done a bit differently than the previous place we got together.

I'd definitely go to Kate's anytime...trivia or no.

Ha ha ha, bartender wrote me a grouchy email back and went on and on with grouchiness and then apologized. I think his boss made him do it.

But, I appreciate the fact that his boss made him do it and that was really nice of them to care about my experience, so two stars for management's concern for customer service.

I'll recommend it to people for the cheap food and drinks for happy hour, but I can never go back, by the tone of his email, I'm sure that if he ever saw me again, he'll spit in my drink.

UPDATE: May 11, 2009
An email from the bartender, who says that he wrote the "apology" letter on his own and quoting his email, "I would never spit or in any way make a drink different for you, so you would  have no fears."

He won't spit in my drink, that is so nice!

Kate's pub is a bit hidden (or so I think) but it's a fabulous little place.  From the outside it looks like it won't be much, but on the inside it's a cozy place!  I was here on a Monday night for trivia with a big group of yelpers.  The place couldn't have been more accommodating.  The waiter kindly pulled together tables in the middle of the bar and even added a card table to make it work.

The food was a bit slow to come out but the place was packed and the waiter at one point indicated they only had one chef working.  However, during happy hour the entire menu was half off.  That's right, no need to go back and read it again, I'll repeat - during happy hour the entire menu was half off.  They have delicious mac & cheese and tasted even yummier with some ground beef on top.  During HH it only cost me $5!  Also on the menu are burgers that you can add whatever toppings to for free - yup no pick 3 and additional ones are 25 cents - they're all free!  How can you complain about something like that?

The trivia itself was a bit strange from other trivia places.  The first 2 rounds were hand out sheets (one of movie stars to identify, the other of acronyms) and then the third round was 45 nearly-rapid fire questions.  Talk about intense!  However, it was still a lot of fun and the questions were broad ranged enough for everybody to know a bit.  Oh and it looked like there was at least one pool table in the back room, but I never made it back there to check it out.

I can't wait to go back for mac & cheese and maybe some trivia again!

I can relate to this place. Just like me, it's a little hard to look at on the outside, but rather nice on the inside.

I always thought it was a little hole-in-the-wall dive, but it's actually bigger than it appears and has lots of TVs, games, and at least one pool table. The ladies' room is a bit of a labyrinth, but luckily I had my compass on hand and didn't get lost for too long.

Although it was initially filled with coeds from UW at 8:00 on a Friday, they soon left for bigger and better places, leaving us old folks to hold down the fort. And by "hold down the fort" I mean "stay until the late late hour of 9:30."

I had a pretty tasty pulled pork sandwich. The fries were just alright. And while I personally didn't have any drinks, the waiter was sure pushing the drop-shot special--only $5! I'm going to put that one on file for a later date.

Don't judge a book by it's cover.

Seriously.

I'm sure your mom told you that about 2304982 times, but I'm telling you again.

Kate's may not be the most exciting, clean or happening place from the outside, but trust me, it's a chill place.  After stepping in I felt so much more relaxed.  The bartender was extremely friendly and drink service was ridiculously fast.  While there were only a few of us at the beginning, our main server quickly realized he should push together as many tables as possible.  Smart on his part as we had a big group an hour later or so and he was kind enough to prepare a big ass table running right down the middle of the bar.  Slightly hard to navigate around, which made it even nicer that they did that for us.

The food was all reasonably priced and was all tasty.  I ordered the fish and chips and was very, very pleased with them.  The beer batter was very beer tasting.... something I'm not very used to.  Usually it just says beer, but doesn't deliver.  Anywho, the batter was tasty and fried up very nicely.  The fries were crispy, hot and salty and while the tartar sauce was just so-so, they gave me a big portion of it which was nice.  I'm a tartar addict and would have requested gallons of it, but they're on top of things here.  The few bites I had of the mac and cheese were good as well.  Cheesy, warm, comforting!  I also liked that you could add stuff to your mac and cheese like BBQ pork, beef or bacon.  Pretty random, but cool.  My one complaint is that the food took an eternity to get to us.  Unfortunate.

Great service, good food and drinks and a well done trivia night!  Yes, we came for trivia night and I quite enjoyed it.  I felt like it was better organized and had easier, more interesting questions than other trivia nights I've been to.  Go team Eddie Bauer Power Hour (or whatever my team was called!)

FYI, they have an awesome Happy Hour.  Half priced food.... yes, food, as in all food.  Oh, and $3 well drinks (I think) and cheap beer too!  Even without HH prices, nothing was unreasonable and I can't think of a better place to go in that area of Seattle.  Check it out yo, for reals!

I enjoyed the atmosphere.  They had the Mariners game on a giant tv.  I'm not a huge sports fan, but I do enjoy a beer, a game, and happy hour priced food.
The three stars reflect the lack of beer choices that I was excited about.  I'm picky.  One of my friends was excited about the really cheap PBR.  I just can't get excited about PBR till after 3 or 4 beers.
Pool tables in the back too.
Great place to get a beer and some food before the movie down the street.

Admittedly, I might be a little biased towards Kate's Pub.  I mean, what better name for a pub could there possibly be?!?  But regardless, I think it's a 4-star place, even for someone not named Kate.

We went for trivia last Monday, and it was great.  This is definitely not the absolutely impossibly George and Dragon brand of trivia - there were a lot of pop culture questions, but also some geography and history too.  The host is super-friendly and wants you to do well - he even gives out hints every round!   (Not sure if this is the new time, but trivia started at 9pm for us.  It's listed earlier on http://quiznight.net.)

Good beer selection, great prices (microbrews were $4, and $2 [!] after 10pm on Mondays).  Food was delicious for bar food, and very well-priced.  When you order a burger, you can get any of their listed toppings, for no extra charge.  (My choice? Veggie burger with bacon, cheddar, mushrooms, and onions, of course!)

I love places like Kate's Pub.  I like the hole-in-the-wall pubs where the servers are casual, the music is loud, and people are a bit too drunk to get themselves home.  Actually, that's my favorite type of happy hour.  But, my experience here was one of maybe 3 other very obnoxious experiences I've had at a bar/pub/restaurant.  It's very rare for me to be dissatisfied with a trip to a bar.

We arrived at about 6:30.  Our server was not particularly friendly or attentive, and right off the bat attempted to make my friend feel stupid when she asked about the happy hour menu.  We ordered a few minutes later, waited for our food for 45 minutes, and left because it had not come yet and we really did have somewhere to be.

Never in that time did our server ask us if we wanted more to drink or tell us our food was "on its way".  He never even glanced at us even though he walked by us many times and delivered lots of food and beer to other people around us.

On our way out I politely informed him we had to leave because we had somewhere to be.  We left more than enough money for our drinks and a generous tip (though he didn't deserve it).  He gave me a nasty look and said "what the hell?", and turned away.  It made me want to go get the money off the table.

I will never go back there and I will never tell anyone to go there.

Kate's is amazing from the service to the drinks and food to the pool tables in the back.

I hate to make this reference, but it really does feel very "Cheers" like! As soon as you walk in you feel like you've been hanging out at the bar for years and everyone inside is your ol' buddy from the neighborhood.

The staff are phenomenal. I'm pretty sure Kate's has a secret bartender ninja training school that they put their staff through. After going to so many bars in the U-district, this is the only way my mind can grasp their awesome.

Their food is made of win. Major noms to the philly cheese steak.

If you want a great experience near the u-dist without having to deal with hordes of drunken greek row kids, I highly recommend you head over to Kate's.

Too loud and busy for my taste.  Someone told me it was a dive bar, not the night I went there.  Crazy packed to the point we had to keep moving for the servers to get through.  It was a Friday night though.  But still, I hate bars that are so loud that when you get out your voice feels hoarse.

Food they were bringing out looked pretty good, if I go again I'm going to try the burger with a fried egg on it or the mac and cheese.

KATE (the bar): Tim, I need to talk about your cheeseburger flair.
TIM: Really? I have lettuce, tomato and onions on it already.
K; Well, ok, that is the minimum, ok?
T: Ok.
K: Now, it's up to you whether or not you want to just do the bare minimum. Well, like Tommy, for example, has 37 pieces of flair. And a terrific smile.
T: Ok. Ok, you want me to order more?
K: Look. Tim,
T: Yeah?
K: People can get a cheeseburger anywhere, ok? They come to Kate's for the atmosphere and the attitude. That's what the flair's about. It's about fun.
T: Ok. So, more then?
K: Look, we want you to express yourself, ok? If you think the bare minimum is enough, then ok. But some people choose to eat more and we encourage that, ok? You do want to express yourself, don't you?
T: Yeah. Yeah.
K: Great. Great. That's all I ask.*

Kate's Pub has an amazing happy hour from 4 - 7pm = $3 pints, $3 wells AND 1/2 off the entire menu.

Wait a minute, let that sink in and let me scream it:

HALF OFF THE ENTIRE FLIBBIN'-FLABBIN' MENU PLUS GREAT DRINK SPECIALS

We're talking appetizers, entrees, dessert and of course their great "build your own burger". Choose your base (meat/chicken/veggie burger) and add your flair at no additional price. Yeah, I threw sauteed onions & mushroom as well as a fried egg on mine. Why? Because I wanted to express myself.

*Thank you, Mike Judge

I think my grandmother went into the witness protection program and is working in the kitchen here.

It is comfort food to the max! Mac & Cheese, meatloaf... need I say more?

The happy hour is excellent -  1/2 price on the menu 4-7pm on weeknights.

The atmosphere is homey although I must go back when they take down all of the halloween decor to see what it is like in the off season.

The large TV makes me feel like I'm at my Uncles lodge. Is that my Uncle behind the bar?

Beware of the one way streets when you are looking for parking. I turned down the wrong way and got cussed out by 3 drivers... sorry I made a mistake but I can't go back now so just wag your finger and move on!

Kate's is great, one of those hidden neighborhood gems. We showed up on a Sunday, no happy hour, and only at the end found out that during the M-F 4-7 happy hour, all the food is half off. Doesn't matter either way, the food's well priced, tasty, and it looked to be a great place for Sunday night football.

The best no pretense bar in Seattle.  Excellently inexpensive and long (4pm-7pm) Happy Hour featuring 50% off all food.  A pool table.  A dart board.  Dark wood interior.  A quiz night.  Occasional live music.  Friendly staff.  Fun clientelle.   A sampling of board games.  And always decked out with the latest holiday decorations.

Yes, it is true...the Happy Hour at Kate's is amazing!  All food is half off and it's actually pretty tasty.

Every time I have gone for Happy Hour it has been packed like no other and insanely loud.  I'm not really into either of those things.  But I will say I never waited too long at the bar, and anything I ordered from my table came fairly quickly.

All of the staff I interacted with were nice and polite.

It's just a bummer to never find a table for your group, or even a single chair most of the time (if you get there after 5:30pm).

But, hey, I'm a grad student so I will stand for a couple hours, saying "excuse me" about 85 times as I bump people or get bumped into, screaming at my comrades and then saying "What?!" 100 times because I can't hear them, if it means I get cheap food and beer :)

WHOA!!  I have to give it up for the cheapest, best happy hour around!

IT'S LONG: 4-7pm every weeknight
IT'S CHEAP: $3 wells & micros. $1.50 PBR.
IT'S GLUTTONOUS: half off the ENTIRE food menu!!!!!!!!!

This means for about $15 I can have a double vodka-soda, a pint of Manny's, and any of the standard bar fare like cheese fries, nachos, random dips, sandwiches, sliders, etc.
When my friends introduced me to this heavenly happy hour, I really didn't know what to do.

Plus good atmosphere, cute location, some of my favorite badass bartenders, big screen sports TV, festive decorations during the holidays, etc... Oh KATE!!!!!!!

Kate's is my North Star, my spiritual home...hell, if they didn't close at night it might be my real home.   If I believed in soul mates, I'm pretty sure their Monte Cristo would be my better half.

The best part of Kate's is happy hour.  Happy hour goes till 7 and all the food on the menu is half off (which makes the Monte Christo even harder to say no to.)   I am also extremely fond of build-a-burger (unlimited toppings), the coconut prawns, the spinach dip and pretty much the rest of the menu too.

They make a mean vodka-cran.  The decor is pub cheerful and I love the seasonal/holiday decorations.  Check out all the pictures of all the famous Kates on the walls!  Including the Pub's namesake, Kate herself, (who I swear to god I once saw in the Third Annual All-Girls Armwrestling championship.)  Service with a hint of attitude completes Kate's Pub's perfectness.  With a bar this awesome, why would you ever go home?

I know everyone says this, but...everything on the menu is half off during happy hour!  I think happy hour well drinks are $3.  Love it.  They have a big  projector screen that they usually show sports games on.  Pretty entertaining.  The service is prompt and friendly.  It's usually filled with kids from the U, but it's not as annoying as you would think.  Thumbs up!

Cheap happy hour, there is no one from 4-5:30 because everyone else is driving home from work (suckas!  it's called work from home!).

hummus - wow, do you actually make your own?  impressive
shrimp - good
hamburger/sliders - delish
bbq chicken wings - mmmeeeeehh too much sauce, but there were a lot of em on the plate
cold dark beer - yum

all of this (3 people sufficiently stuffed) for $30.

Normally I hate going to bars on Saturday nights. They are crowded with people I dislike and playing bad music with lyrics that make no sense. However, Kate's is an exception. A bar replete with famous 'Kates' (possibly even owned by a woman?) the bartender even made my martini the way I asked him to, the crowd did not bother me one bit, and neither did the prices.

I went with a few friends on Wednesday and it was super fun, a little corwded for a Wednesday but not too bad. If you enjoy karaoke, then it's a good place to be. I had some of the fries, they seem to be handcut which is a plus, and not super greasy which is another plus. I'm pleased to find that the drinks were well priced, and the notices they put around the bar are hillarious. Definitely would come back again.

'Sometimes you want to go
Where everybody knows your name,
and they're always glad you came.
You wanna be where you can see,
our troubles are all the same
You wanna be where everybody knows
Your name.'

Kate's Pub which was formely known as O'Shea's Easy Street is one of the few places I enjoyed with regularity before Yelp (BY). And like the Cheers' gang, I love going there. The service is always awesome, prices are good and Kate's always friendly and accomodates us grubby, sweaty soccer players. (Food's not bad either.)

Case in point: we swing by after our game Tuesday night, the bar's packed, Kate welcomes us back and proceeds to commandeer several tables for us from loitering customers. (I won't call them DB's because they patronize the fine pub but you get the picture...) One pitcher turns into four and the next thing you know it it's 1:00 AM Wednesday morning.

'You wanna go where people know,
people are all the same,
You wanna go where everybody knows
your name.'

They have 1/2 off (think only $5 for a dinner) on all their food during happy hour and a huge selection of beers!  Ambiance is nice with numerous TVs showing sports games, sky lights, and a nice pub feel.  Also our server was super friendly (not just Seattle nice but actually friendly).

Yes I love this place and will be back for good, greasy cheap food during Happy Hour!  Plus its walking distance from UW but far enough for a slightly older crowd.

I love Kate's.
It has good specials, fun nights (karaoke, quiz night), friendly staff, plenty of seating, free pool and darts, music that's not too loud, and a late night food menu.

I would probably rate each little fact a 4/5 stars, but when it does so many things so well, it gets a 5 from me.

Plus it's a block and a half from Milano's pizza in one direction(open until 3!!!) and donuts or the taco cart in the other direction.  What else do you need?

this is my favorite local hangout on a wednesday night!  Karaoke baby! :) But be warned that it is packed so sometimes it is hard to even get one song in.  The food's pretty tasty (for bar food) and I really enjoy their bacon fries.  YES!
