While I was going to school at the UW, Kate's Pub in Wallinford was my favorite watering hole. Since it wasn't in the U District it didn't tend to cater to the to students and felt more like a neighborhood bar. During my senior year when I spent more time at Kate's than I did at the library it felt like the theme from Cheer's should be playing on the juke box (NO JOURNEY!) every time I walked in, because the entire wait staff knew my name.

There's an every day happy hour from 4 to 7 that no other bar in the city can match: half off all food with a drink purchase. The best part about their menu (happy hour or not) is that all add-ons for their burger are at no extra charge. You can order a Double Bacon Cheeseburger with a fried egg and avocado with a Rolling Rock and pay 10 dollars including a 25% tip at happy hour. That's a deal so good, it's illegal in the state of Illinois (not joking).

This is my favorite bar in Seattle, hands down.

I don't spend a whole lot of time at bars, Kate's is a great neighborhood bar with a comfortable atmosphere.  It's a good spot to go for people in the University area who are looking for a chill bar that's not overrun by drunk students like bars on the Ave.

Kate's has an amazing happy hour where everything on the menu is 50% off.  They have excellent fish & chips and build your own burgers that you can load with toppings like bacon for no extra charge.  The bartenders are usually a little rushed, but they're friendly and chill.  They recognize you if you come back often and they can be pretty hilarious.  Definitely my favorite bar in the U district/Wallingford area.  It's the best kept secret in the area, so I probably shouldn't even be writing this review!

Bathroom looked like Chuck Norris went apeshit punching holes in everything. Extremely dirty even for a neighborhood bar. Decent drinks and prices, but our bartender was so rude to us we are determined to never go back.

They need a serious scrubbing and a major attitude adjustment.

After a late night flight and a check-in to the place we were staying Sir Nicholas and I were in need of a snacky snack. And also a beer. So we pulled out the trusty Yelp app and found Kate's Pub just down the street from us with rave reviews and an open kitchen and away we went!

This is the kind of bar that can make a gal like me a regular. If it lived in Denver I'd probably come a lot. They have a great selection of craft beers, mostly local, on tap, super friendly staff, board games strewn about for your playing enjoyment, and decent food. They also have happy hour from 4 - 7 everyday where everything on the food menu is half off. That's pretty, pretty sweet.

I order cheese fries and a crispy chicken salad for eats. The cheese fries were good, but they are hard to be bad - just add cheese and bacon to fries and I'm all set. The salad was humongous. I think I ate like  of it. It was also nice as I requested buffalo chicken (like wings, but made out of chicken strips) instead of regular chicken and they accommodated me without blinking an eye. While it isn't a fancy place I could definitely get behind supporting a spot like this if I was a fixture in this neighborhood.

Kate's seems like a cool place, and the service was fine, but I was underwhelmed by their mac n cheese. It was way more creamy than cheesy. Where's the cheese, Kate?

Great little dive! Kinda dark near the front of the pub, but the back is pretty well lit. Just a slight disconnect, anyway.

What I gotta say about this spot is nothing but good things! I come here once in a while but the recent trip totally made me wanna review them!

I was on a date with a lady who is gluten intolerant... I'm still not very good with finding places to go for people that eat like that, but it was impromptu and had to be near the U District. The guy behind the bar was very helpful and even took extra precautions to make sure none of her food was contaminated. Also he suggested some beverages that would work for her diet. Awesome! The staff here is a bloody hoot and some of the most charismatic guys one would find in a dive bar.

I was here for happy hour, I gotta tell ya that their happy hour is absolutely stellar!! The food is delicious, the choices are varied, and these guys have the BEST build your own burger I have ever had! I love it!

I will continue to frequent these guys and appreciate their effort.

I really like Kate's Pub. I'm a big fan of dive bars. Add some free pool, and you've got yourself a winner! The best part, however, is usually the bar food! I say usually because the last time I went with a friend, we both ended up with pretty bad stomach pains the next morning. But it says a lot about the place that I would be totally willing to go back and order the same thing again.

It should be called ECSTATIC Hour at Kate's!  I mean, 1/2 off all food??  My cheap bill is always amazing and so are the cheese fries, crispy chicken salad, nachos, burgers, and chicken caesar wrap (we go here often...I did not eat that all in one sitting).

The servers are great!  They are fast even when it's packed.  They also understand my hatred for swiss and they substitute for a different yummy cheese when I need it.  Kate's is a pub with pub food and pub decor (albeit an amazing pub), so if you don't like pubs, don't go.

Great dive bar with an awesome projector for a TV. If you are in need of cheap food during happy hour and good stiff drinks without having to drive far, Kate's is the place to go.

They are the quintessential neighborhood bar where they know everyone by first name and keep the drinks coming.

The patrons there are also a blast to hang out with and are quite the chatty crowd. Go there enough and I'm sure you'll have a whole new set of friends in no time!

I was enticed to come here with a groupon, I'm not sure I would've ever noticed the place otherwise, as it's kind of a dive bar with a small store front. If you like the small neighborhood bar with dim lights, no frills, and the smell of stale beer, this could be your place. I could see that it'd be a decent place to go as "your" bar cause it's pretty intimate and not very crowded. But if you're looking for an experience that's anything more than just a beer and a small table, you'll want to look elsewhere.

I love Kate's 4-7 happy hour!  We always get a pitcher and their $5.00 build-your-own burger (no extra charge for an egg, bacon, and avocados?  Too good to be true!).  Their bartenders/waitstaff also have a great sense of humor, always provides for some mild entertainment.

However, parking isn't always the easiest when you try to come for happy hour, the lighting is extremely dim, and several of the tables are quite wobbly.

I love this place.  Especially on Sundays.

From 4 - 7pm on Sundays, all of their food is half-priced (with the purchase of a beverage, but the beverages are conveniently cheap).

I know I am biased because this is the location where I met the love of my life.  Also, my name is Kate.  But if neither of those were true, I'd still really enjoy this place.

The hummus platter is loaded with carrots, celery, cucumber, roasted red pepper and tomato as well as tons of pita and a massive, unconquerable amount of hummus.   The chicken tenders are excellent with barbecue sauce.  Their chicken nachos are my favorite nachos that I've tried in Seattle so far.

I can't comment on the Kate's atmosphere on a busy Friday or Saturday night since I try to avoid any crowded bar scene, but Sundays are great, with just the right amount of crowd.

Kate's is a bar you can come and hang out in, and feel instantly comfortable. It doesn't give off a "neighborhood locals only" vibe, but it's got enough quirks and kickass specials so that the 'hoods don't feel left out and keep on coming back.

The guys who work there are top notch. Friendly, relaxed, kind, and chatty. They also have pretty damned good memories for guys who work in a place with so many regulars.

Example: My friend and I go there once every other week or so, and the bartender remembers that she drinks a tall boy and I drink Stella in a fancy-shmancy glass. He had it ready to go the second we sat down p at the bar.

I've had appetizers and dinner there. Great bar food (no healthy eater items here) that had huge portions and was made-to-order. The onion rings are a local favorite, and after trying them I jumped on the bandwagon.

And there's no Journey on the juke. Brilliant.

I've been here several times for Monday night trivia. I've had drinks and some fries, but that's about it.

Drinks: good stuff. A full bar with cool bartenders who make a nice, strong drink. Every drink I've had has been tasty and not watered down.

    Fries: Good, not great. Basic.

Trivia: The host is fun and has a cool accent. The questions are pretty difficult. Some of the teams take it a little too seriously, but I suppose that happens at any trivia night. $6 per team. Good times, but you might leave feeling a little dumb for not knowing the answers.

This place looks and sounds unsuspecting from the outside.  You think: oh a little pub hidden between shops in Wallingford...Theres even minimal windows, but it's a surprisingly quite GOOD pub hidden in Wallingford.

I came here with some friends. One of them knew the bartender, hence why he wanted to come.  I made it in time for Sunday evening's $5 a drink and ordered a vodka cran and fish and chips.  He gave us another $5 drink right on the dot of 8, or within 5 minutes of 8 as well.

The food was pretty good.  Everyone else's burgers and the such looked great as well. The prices were good and the bartender was very friendly and nice.

I don't go to pubs much but when I'm looking for one, Kate's is the way to go.

Juliann B and I agree on this one -- because we go together. :)  Rock solid pub with amazing happy hour deals.  Bartenders who handle a busy crowd and still will make several different drinks based on a friend's "sweet and fruity" requirements AND will recommend a beer when you just don't know which you want.  On top of that, well-meaning sarcastic humor, e.g.:

Us: [pointing to a photo] Do you know which Kate that is?
Bartender: [Smiles, puts drinks down.] Yep. [Walks away.]

Serves us right. He told us eventually.

Decent beer selection at decent prices and a bar with plenty of seating in a surprisingly large space. Plus, free darts and free pool (lumpy pool table, but still, free). Couldn't be better right? But wait! The constant smell of greasy food being cooked! Gotta admit, I haven't tried any of it, but it sure smells good and doesn't look bad either. I like the vibe of this place, especially at off hours and on weeknights. It can get crowded during prime time, so be warned.

If you are here on a weeknight, the bartenders will roam around to check on you and likely remember your name if you open a tab. Not to shabby.

My one problem: The Juke Box explicitly states "No Journey," and yet Journey was playing while I was there. Maybe I missed the joke, but I would have been happier if it wasn't a joke!

Make sure you get pitchers for the table or stick with the cheap well drinks. You'll save a lot over pints and fancy drinks. Of course, this advice works for just about any bar... All the same, good place.

Two things you need to keep in mind when visiting Kates... 1) If the next day is a day off classes for the U, DO NOT COME HERE! There will be about 10 thousand frat boys and their twig like girlfriends there. 2) they have AWESOME karaoke, great song list! The DJ is great and super nice, the list can get pretty long but he'll let you know as soon as he can if he thinks you can't make it before the end of the night.

Beer, cider and liquor make for a pretty good bar (not to mention one or two OUTRAGEOUSLY cute bartender boys)... I try to be DD when I come here so I never drink much if at all and they usually will comp me a coke if they realize I'm the lady behind the wheel that night.

I've gotten pretty harassed by a few of their customers (ie drunk frat boys trying to pick up on this hot mama) and it's gone pretty unheaded but seriously the guys that work here are too busy to pick up on everything so just be fair warned when you go that this place can quickly turn into a meat market without you even noticing it and before long some drunk guy is practically shaking you he's leaning on you so hard slurring out that he loves your glasses.

I'm going to keep this short and simple. I don't usually write reviews, ok, maybe this is my first. But I feel like I owe it to this place.

They are the best. Far and away. A neighborhood bar like they are meant to be, and rarely are in this fine city I love. And I know bars, given that I seem to at least visit for a short while one most days of the week. I am here at least a couple of those times. Happy hour is amazing. Late night specials keep me happy. But as it should be at a bar, it is the people in the end. Ask anyone who spends a fair amount of time out in those hallowed establishments. You can make me a great drink, thank you. You can make me feel at home, I will be back, soon.

This is that place. This is where they make you feel at home. Put up with your bull, shut you down when it goes to far, remember your name, take care of your friends, and anything you could reasonably expect.

Down to basics, this is just a damn fine bar, with good taps, good specials, and damn fine people.

Happy hour is great! Tasty bar food and it is all half price! Plus they have drink specials too! Lots of good "certain day of the week" deals, fun events (Trivia with Billy is SWEET) and great bartenders. Free pool and darts. Lots of seating!

KATE (the bar): Tim, I need to talk about your cheeseburger flair.
TIM: Really? I have lettuce, tomato and onions on it already.
K; Well, ok, that is the minimum, ok?
    T: Ok.
K: Now, it's up to you whether or not you want to just do the bare minimum. Well, like Tommy, for example, has 37 pieces of flair. And a terrific smile.
T: Ok. Ok, you want me to order more?
    K: Look. Tim,
    T: Yeah?
K: People can get a cheeseburger anywhere, ok? They come to Kate's for the atmosphere and the attitude. That's what the flair's about. It's about fun.
    T: Ok. So, more then?
K: Look, we want you to express yourself, ok? If you think the bare minimum is enough, then ok. But some people choose to eat more and we encourage that, ok? You do want to express yourself, don't you?
    T: Yeah. Yeah.
    K: Great. Great. That's all I ask.*

Kate's Pub has an amazing happy hour from 4 - 7pm = $3 pints, $3 wells AND 1/2 off the entire menu.

Wait a minute, let that sink in and let me scream it:

HALF OFF THE ENTIRE FLIBBIN'-FLABBIN' MENU PLUS GREAT DRINK SPECIALS

We're talking appetizers, entrees, dessert and of course their great "build your own burger". Choose your base (meat/chicken/veggie burger) and add your flair at no additional price. Yeah, I threw sauteed onions & mushroom as well as a fried egg on mine. Why? Because I wanted to express myself.

WHOA!!  I have to give it up for the cheapest, best happy hour around!

    IT'S LONG: 4-7pm every weeknight
    IT'S CHEAP: $3 wells & micros. $1.50 PBR.
IT'S GLUTTONOUS: half off the ENTIRE food menu!!!!!!!!!

This means for about $15 I can have a double vodka-soda, a pint of Manny's, and any of the standard bar fare like cheese fries, nachos, random dips, sandwiches, sliders, etc.
When my friends introduced me to this heavenly happy hour, I really didn't know what to do.

Plus good atmosphere, cute location, some of my favorite badass bartenders, big screen sports TV, festive decorations during the holidays, etc... Oh KATE!!!!!!!

Last Friday night, my 'surrogates' and I were trying to find a place to get our grub on. We were running through the usual list.. nothing sounded great. Nothing got our goats.

    Then it dawned on me..

I COULD check and see what Yelp recommends? Hmm.. what a novel idea?! I mean.. Yelp does have restaurant reviews after all, right?

Ya know.. Sometimes, we all need to remind ourselves that THIS isn't just a 'good times/ great parties, DYL website'... or is it?

    ANY-WHAAAAY-

As I perused, I saw 'Kate's Pub' on the list. My good friend Eric bartends here on Friday/ Saturday nights. He's been tellin' me for eons to, 'Get my ace over here already'. And that's just what we did.

It's kind of noisy in that little place, but damnit, Kate you're a darling little vixen with a BEAUTIFUL name, so I won't hold that against you.

I had the veggie burger with 'whatever you damn well please' on it. No really- you pick the meat (or non meat in my case) and all the add ons (as many as your gut desires) are FREE: Guac, BBQ sauce, Grilled Onions, Bacon, a Fried Egg even!

Decent selection of beer on tap.. and if you're a Kate, they take your picture and put it on their 'Kate wall'.

Look for me up there next time you're in!

This is a decent place.  A highly local group is usually present, but it's not like The Hill and paranoid about "outsiders" visiting Their Special Place.

I had not been here for a while.  I see people I know here occasionally for something planned or just say "yo sup" when I drop in.

Mac and Cheese may be the official Seattle dish (with Pho as a close second) that people romanticize about.  I don't really get why, but hey.  It's tasty occasionally.

I mention this because there is a bowl of mac and cheese with pulled pork here that is seriously hardcore food porn.  It's hot and sticky and has a big chunk of meat.  They even provide toast for you to wipe and clean up with when you have finished.

I keep forgetting to come to trivia night here.  Someone should invite me.

Ha ha ha, bartender wrote me a grouchy email back and went on and on with grouchiness and then apologized. I think his boss made him do it.

But, I appreciate the fact that his boss made him do it and that was really nice of them to care about my experience, so two stars for management's concern for customer service.

I'll recommend it to people for the cheap food and drinks for happy hour, but I can never go back, by the tone of his email, I'm sure that if he ever saw me again, he'll spit in my drink.

    UPDATE: May 11, 2009
An email from the bartender, who says that he wrote the "apology" letter on his own and quoting his email, "I would never spit or in any way make a drink different for you, so you would  have no fears."

He won't spit in my drink, that is so nice!
