can't wait to go back, was in tonight and it was a very nice treat.
visit the area regularly from up north and will defiantly be making this a new regular stop in the OC.
was sat quickly, being lead through a clean comfortable restaurant to a booth where we took our seats and was greeted promptly by a handsome waiter. brought drink's and was pleasant with ordering requests. food was very tasty, came hot and quick.
my party was pretty early for dinner and as the dinning room filled and our waiter got busier he was able to still make refills and check-ins.
dinner for 3 under 50 and i had a glass of pinot too, so quite reasonable and good quality to.

Was going to give them 1 star, but bumped up because I'm feeling generous.

Had lunch with M. a few days ago; they made the Press Telegram's "Best Pastrami Sandwich" list, so a visit was in order to see if they were really as good as their hype.

    Not exactly.

I had the pastrami melt, but in retrospect should have tried the sandwich instead.  While the pastrami wasn't real fatty and had a nice black pepper crust, that was about it.  You can get a pastrami sandwich at Pete's Burgers and save yourself four dollars (and the somewhat long wait time, although it was 1:30pm on a Wednesday).  Fries were nice and crispy.

    M. opted for the Cobb salad and it was an absolute disaster.  It resembled a Caesar salad but without the croutons and Parmesan cheese.  It was obvious that whoever made it had no clue what the hell they were doing; no little piles of ham, egg or cheese.  It was just a mess of greens covered in what was probably their version of Caesar dressing that had no flavor.  Now, M. will point out if something's wrong and ask for a correction, but this was so bad she sent it back.  Server understood but didn't really offer any kind of apology; she did ask if M. wanted anything else; she ordered a bowl of vegetable beef soup (I was hoping they couldn't screw that up).

It would have been a decent  experience if the kitchen knew how to make a Cobb salad and I didn't want to be rude and eat while M. was waiting on her soup, so my sandwich got cold.

Only real positive things were the ice tea refills, extensive menu (remember: you're in a deli, probably not the best bet to order a salad) and I didn't have to call for a manager to have the Cobb salad removed.

$21.95 for a sandwich, iced tea, scratch the Cobb salad, bowl of soup.  Not worth it.  You may have a legion of people that love you and get a nod from a local newspaper, but you're certainly not worthy of 4- or 5-stars.  Perhaps others have had better, but I can say with a high degree of certainty that I won't be returning.

Katella Deli is one of those places that has been around a long time.  It reminds me of Bake N Broil in Long Beach which caters to a mostly older crowd.

We came in on a Sunday afternoon just because we happened to be in the area and wanted to have lunch somewhere where we could grab a beer.  They were pretty busy with a 20 minute wait.  The bar was relatively empty so we ate lunch there.  You can tell that the last time they remodeled was around 1987 because of the block glass wall and the pink wooden furniture.  You gotta love it.

I had the BBQ Beef Sandwich with coleslaw and onion rings.  My wife had the corned beef sandwich on Rye with potato salad.  Overall, the food wasn't bad, but there was nothing memorable about it either.  The potato salad tasted like Costco potato salad.

The last couple of time I've been here has been for lunch and its been a while since I came in for dinner, so maybe their dinners are better.

Super delicious corned beef and slaw sandwich on rye (the times square)! It was my first time here and will most definitely not be my last visit. My sandwich was superb and the plate of pickles were perfect. They had fantastic crunch and flavor! Service was great too!
Wandered through the deli after lunch and took home some yummy bagel chips and was tempted to get a little of everything because their desserts looked sooooooo good!

Having grown up in Seal Beach and having parents who love corned beef and pastrami, I have been coming to Katella Deli for years, even when it was located at the original, smaller restaurant down the street.

What do I love best here?  So much to say.  Let's start with the bakery.  The bakery is awesome.  Some of my favorite things to get are their bagels, rugelach, oreo cookie cake, egg bread, rainbows, cheese danish, bagel chips and now they have macarons.  At one of my old jobs I worked with two doctors who would always ask me to bring them rugelach from here.  In the deli portion of the bakery you can get their awesome pickles, lox and whitefish.

As far as the restaurant goes, I love their matzo ball soup, lox, corned beef sandwich, pastrami sandwich, breakfast platters of salami and eggs and their corned beef hash.  When you order a sandwich here you get a choice of their freshly made breads which is awesome.  Of note, they only have a kids' menu for lunch and dinner here.  No kids' menu is available for breakfast.  My niece loves to eat lots of things here and can come close to finishing a full salami and eggs breakfast or sliver dollar pancake platter here with no problem though.  They make excellent scrambled eggs here also.  I really miss the healing powers of their matzo ball soup.  When I lived in North Orange County, I would often stop in to pick up their soup to go when I was feeling under the weather.  For me there is magic in that soup, and I wish I could teleport it to South OC!

I came here primarily to try their Bagel Chips from their bakery, which in fact, I highly do recommend in Garlic Parmesan. Bagel Chips in Cinnamon is an alternative choice that I believe would be just as appealing to the taste for cinnamon lovers. The bakery isn't big but carries a large selection of delightful baked goods that are perfect for gifts if you're visiting a friend, relative, or coworker.

I have yet to try the restaurant itself but definitely will if I'm ever around the area again.

Just across the street from the Los Alamitos Race Track is the Katella Deli Restaurant/Bakery.  I heard about their Monte Cristos and GINORMOUS "Dream Puff", so I just had check this place out and try them.  The Monte Cristos were of generous portion.  If you're going to have dessert, don't finish them and save some stomach space for their sweets.  The Dream Puff is larger than your average cream puff; it is also adorned with a chocolate fudge shell, plenty of whipped cream, cornflakes, and a cherry on top.  This dessert is perfect for sharing, but then again, there are those individuals who want "the dream" all to themselves.

he atmosphere is homely and geared towards an older/geriatric clientele (like Polly's Pies).  The restaurant is clean and there is plenty of places to sit.My customer service experience was not as bad as other reviewers.  Perhaps, it's because I had a friendly server who ensured that my dining experience was a happy one.  :-)  I can't say if I'll receive the same type of service the next time I go there.  What really mattered to me was that food was delicious.

I'm obsessed with macaroons and will go to any lengths to find them. The ones at this bakery are not only comparable to some of the best I've had, but they're ridiculously cheap! $.55 for one?! It's hard to find macaroons for under 2 bucks a pop. And they have really quirky, fun flavors, like passion fruit and lemon. So delicious.

If you're in the restaurant, order the ruben sandwich. Mmm.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOOOOOOVE this place! My boyfriend and I have been here numerous times and the food truly never disappoints.

They have great sandwiches and burgers. We usually start off with the Deli Skins which are amaaaazing. You really can't go wrong with potatoes that are topped off with deli meats, cheese, and tomatoes. Ya really can't. There are about five on a plate and they definitely will fill you up a bit (as appetizers shoulllld) so we usually share a burger/sandwich.

My favorite sandwich is the chicken melt on parmesan bread. Grilled, seasoned chicken with cheese and bacon on crunchy parmesan bread? "Is this a dream?"  you may ask...No, just Katella Deli! ;)

And guess what, after you're done stuffing your face you can walk yourself on over to the bakery and get some yummy dessert. It's just plain awesome. I recommend their blueberry muffin and ask them to warm it up for you. You will NOT regret it!

I must note that the atmosphere here is very... old. I'm pretty sure retirement/senior homes have buses that drop people off every other hour. It is jammed packed with senior citizens. lol. It's nice though, I guess. Nobody's really loud, which is good.

The one thing I will knock Katella Deli on is their service. Most of the waitresses here are around the age of their clientele and they are just awful. Really short, not very helpful and pretty slow. But whatever. Food is still bomb. :)

Updated review for cakes only.  I got a box of pre-sliced cakes from my cousin.  So here is what I have to say about the cakes http://www.yelp.com/bi...
Strawberry-choco chip cheesecake was so rich but sooo good.
    Mocha cake- super delicious
Fruit tart - the best pie crust...light and flakey. The assorted fruit topping was so fresh. The custard balanced the tangy/sweet flavor of the ftesh fruit.
Tiramasu - nicely presented in a clear plastic (cube) container.  The taste was oh so heavenly.

The best part? It was free!

The Katella Deli seems to be evolving. They have upgraded the look of the place this year. Thankfully without changing the menu. The traditional Jewish foods are perfect and way plentiful.  The Western "cafe" foods are above average and new things that are being added focus on a younger crowd and I like it.

Now the bakery. Six stars. compared to westside and Beverly Hills delis, the size, quality and prices are fantastic. I recommend the chocolate chip danish (a cross between a pastry and a candy bar).

Just like all the good delis (Canter's, Nate n Al's, Brent's) the owner is always there (I've asked). It really seems to make a difference.

Had the pastrami on rye that came with cole slaw and russian dressing. Very good. Not on par with Langers or Brents but the pastrami could hang with say, Canters.

Need to remember to get it on rye toast next time. Everything together was a little too soft a consistency for me.

    Fantastic onion rings.

The only deli I have found in orange county that I would enjoy going back to.

This review is just for take out! My Boss treats us every year to a little lunch spread from Katella Deli!! He gets Pastrami and Corned Beef off the bone, and Rye Bread. He also picked up some coleslaw and potato salad! Everything is delicious!! I am not a huge fan of Rye Bread, but their Rye is fresh, dense, seedless. Their Corned beef and pastrami is out of this world amazing! I would love to actually eat in the restaurant!

Everybody loves this spot and for good reason!  I have had a variety of phenomenal cakes from here but this time around I was doing dinner.  I did not get anything too much out of the ordinary; basically a burger, fries, cole slaw and tapioca (all of which were delicious).  The one item which I tried for the first time and which really impressed me was that yummy matzo ball soup - who knew?????

I'm a fan for life (both of the soup and all the food at Katella)!!!!

This is the place to go if you are a displaced New Yorker craving matzo ball soup (it really does cure colds!) or pastrami or whitefish salad, etc. I definitely got my "fix", (I lived in NYC for almost 10 years), though was disappointed that we didn't get a bowl of fresh pickles at our table like they do in many authentic NY delis.

Bakery: As good as it gets!

Restaurant: Yay, I'm a fan, plus a half a point for 4.5 stars.

Great breakfast, (eggs Benedict, silver dollar pancakes for the kiddos)
for lunch or dinner you can't go wrong. LOVE the pastrami sandwich, huge and tasty, love the brisket, the chicken soup, their burgers, knockwurst sandwich, the list goes on and on.

I usually buy a loaf of bread from the bakery on the way out and it's been a tradition in our family that on at least one birthday during the year we get either the rum cake or the cake with all the fresh fruit on top.

Enjoyed the submarine sandwich - all one third of it.  It was huge.  My friend, RogerS - affectionally known as the bottomless pit - is the only one I know that could eat it all.  It was very tasty  and I will enjoy it for 2 additional meals.

The wife enjoyed a good pastrami.  We had good pickles. Bad coffee.

We arrived shortly after 5pm.  The Katella deli has a lot of two seat booths so we got in right away.

As we left we picked up a couple of desserts to enjoy later in the evening. Burp.

A kipper is a whole herring, a small, oily fish, that has been split from tail to head, gutted, salted or pickled, and cold smoked.

Apparently in the United Kingdom eating kippers with eggs is a common and traditional breakfast. For some reason I was reading about this on Wikipedia on Friday, probably a link form another article I was reading. We came to Katella Deli on Saturday for breakfast and when I saw "Kippers and eggs" on the menu I figured "eh... what the hell, it's fate". I mean, what are the odds I was just reading about it? A week ago I wouldn't even know what a kipper is.

The plate comes out and looks delicious.... a smoked kipper which has been pan fried and covered with caramelized onions, served with two eggs (over medium) and hashbrowns. Then the smell hit my nose. Oh my lord... a hideous fishy rank that almost blew me backwards out of my chair. The cranky yet charming waitress said, and I quote "How can you eat this? You're like the 3rd person ever to order it". By this time cold sweat started beading from my forehead and I was scared by what I got myself into.

With my hand shaking I take a chunk of fish in my fork and place it in my mouth.... *chew* *chew* hmm.. a bit salty *chew* *chew* loads of wonderful smokiness *chew* *chew* bit of an anchovy flavor and I like anchovies. *gulp*. Hmm... somehow this rank smelling fishy tastes pretty damn good! It didn't really taste "fishy", it's a very oily fish like mackerel or anchovy so if you've had those and liked them you'll be OK. This fish was saturated in delicious smoke flavor which I think is the saving grace of the dish. Honestly.. I enjoyed my breakfast and was glad I gave it a try so I can say I've had it but I probably won't order it again.

Now here's the disclaimers why I probably would never order it again . For one it reeks. Every time your fork touches your food the stench wafts around so badly that my wife couldn't eat most of her meal and even I was getting fatigued from it by the end of the meal. I mean shit... even my waitress complained when dropping it off at my table. It tastes very good but it's not fair to the surrounding people eating. Second, the bones. They're very tiny hair like bones that you can eat no problem but there are so many of them. Hopefully they're good fiber, haha. Ripping out the effen spine Sub-Zero from Mortal Kombat style will pull out a lot of them. Hide the spine under something so you don't scare away small children and make your table partners gag.

I always read reviews on Yelp but never felt compelled to write one.

We usually stop by and pick up deli take out for dinner and bakery items from Katella when we are in L.A. for the day or coming home from LAX.  Yesterday we stopped in, purchased 4 pounds of deli meats (turkey, corned beef & pastrami, not cheap!) various sides and a bunch of pastries and cookies.  We spent over $85.

We asked the deli guy for mustard but he, as usual deferred us to the take out desk.  The girl there told me she'd give me mustard packets but they would be .20 cents each.  Seriously.  What?  I told her how much I just spent and she told me that they charge for them for the deli.  My husband went over and asked for the manager who said they charge for them...he once again explained we just bought food so she started to give him some and he said he wasn't paying for them so if she was going to charge him he didn't want them.  She gave him 7 packets for 4 pounds of meat.

Oh, and if you order a sandwich from take out mustard is  free and if you eat a sandwich in the restaurant mustard is free (for a $12 sandwich).  But if you buy anything from the deli, it's .20 cents a packet.
Sorry, I'm not a cheap person but that's just ridiculous.  Why can't the guy at the deli give out packets to those buying food there?

I gave 2 stars because the meat was delicious and moist (had to stop at the store to buy my own mustard) and the babka yummy, but the cookies, usually very good, were hard and stale.

Next time we want deli, we'll go to Jerry's Deli in Çosta Mesa where mustard is abundant and free with purchase (and soups much tastier).

The place gets very busy; go somewhere else when you're in a big hurry during the mealtime rushes.  Off-peak times are nicer but the place never seems to get really slow.  It's because the food is so good.

I mean when you're an old jew and your taste buds are already shot...anything will taste good but seriously the prices here are whack! The quality of the food and cleanliness of the restaurant is sub par and that's an understatement. Service is ehh.
The only reason I give them a few stars is cause of there killer matzo ball soup, (hard to screw up but deserves some bonus points) and there keichel is kind of fab.

Came here a few weeks ago for my bff's bday.  The place reminded me of a 'Coco's'.  I had the avocado/turkey/alfalfa sprouts sandwich which sounded soo good to me ... but was disappointing.  The turkey needed some flavor and the bread was just 'blah'.  It'd probably be better on some squaw bread or something with more flavor.  I was pretty disappointed.

However we had ordered the stuffed potatos and onion rings for starters and I thought the potatos w/ranch were great!  Also, my bff ordered the Monte Cristo and that was amazing!!  I normally would never order that and one of our buddies felt the same way but ... it actually was really good and amazingly tasted even better with the jelly they give you on the side!  Something about the salty with sweet.

For dessert we ordered the rum cake, OMG DELICIOUS!!!!  You MUST try it!  I didn't taste the rum but it had rich chocolate with small bits of pineapple inside one of the layers...so so good!

I enjoyed the food so much that I went back 2 days later and took my sis.  She liked the Monte Carlo and thought it was better w/jelly but says she'd try something else next time.  She also liked the stuffed potatos and loved the rum cake.

They have a bakery with so many appetizing items, I will def need to return to sample a few! ;-)

ps - the Monte Carlo is big enough for 2 ppl to share!  This place has great portions!

Yuck!!!  I guess the people who love eating here have taste buds used to bad food.  This place is horrible.  I brought a friend who is an executive chef for a high end hotel and he thought this place was disgusting.  I did too.  He loves food from small mom and pop places but we both agreed that this was just a major disappointment.  The food tasted like frozen food.  Nothing we ordered tasted fresh or even slightly good.  YUCK!

I went there with friends for a quick bite out to eat.  There was no one in the lobby but the waitress took our name as said it would be 5-10 minutes.  It turned out being closer to 15.  I would think it would be quicker.   The menu was extensive and many things looked or sounded good.  I chose the open faced turkey sandwich, my buddy Erwin got the mini sliders, and mamasan ordered the pastrami on rye.  No real home runs here.  For starters, the only good thing I can say is that they offered pickles as a munchie.  Thankfully we accepted, because it took a full 30 minutes to deliver our orders to the table.  Really, did they have to go out and kill the turkey and pluck the feathers as well?  My dinner was bland but slightly warm.  It was kind of the comfort food I was looking foe with the mashed potato, stuffing, and gravy.  They did serve a side dish vegetable of carrot slices and broccoli.  They were both cold and raw.  Erwin's sliders were good but too well done.  They had flavor with onions and the bun was soft.  The pastrami sandwich was average.  I have had better but have had much worse.  Overall, the prices were fair and the portions sizes were OK for the price.

In closing......points for price (value) and for pickles as a munchie.
The lose points for quickness, food quality, and food preparation.

    Busy and great attentive staff.

I should have not ordered the mushroom 'n' onions burger. Should have ordered the french dipped. Who would have thought... my burger came with a veggie patty. Yech.

However, the french fries are REALLY good. And so is the coleslaw.

Don't you dare insult my food intelligence!  I ordered a tuna melt!!  You can't simply toast the bread, throw in some cheese, tuna/mayonnaise and call it a tuna melt when it was very clearly just a tuna sanwich!  I recently had an amazingly great tuna melt from Sweet Elle's in HB and wanted to compare it to the great KD - FAILED!!!  Your fries and coleslaw were good but don't you dare call that a tuna melt!

The bakery is still cool but since they have a separate listing for that, I'll save my stars to put there!

Damnit, I am so mad, so mad that it took me so long to visit Katella Deli.  My new found love of pastrami has been tainted because my first sandwich was at Langer's several years ago and nothing has come close since.  The Hat is ok for what it is but still not even close.  Several other spots have been ok, but none close.  Katella Deli was outstanding.  I tried a slightly different version, the pastrami melt (Cheese, pastrami, rye) and it was awesome.  My wife split it with me and she's had even less pastrami experience and loved it as well.  We both wish this was closer to home.  We also split the matzo ball soup.  It was average.  The matzo ball was great, light and fluffy but the broth was soooo bland.  Needed salt, a lot of salt, and we're people that rarely salt anything.

Go into the bakery when you are done for a treat, great selection and I highly recommend taking home a container of garlic parm bagel chips.  WOW.  I hear the cinnamon ones are awesome too.  Worth every penny.  Oh, and as far as the pastrami goes, a slight notch below Langers but like $5 less and closer so hey, totally worth it.

They have great service, the only thing I ever order is the corned beef and cabbage and it's delicious. Their pickles and the fact that they use real butter for their bread witthout asking is great. I have eaten here about a handful f times and I had a wow moment and the bakery each time I go in there is a bit unorganized. I go in there with big eyes and try some cookies or something and I guess I feel like I wasted money because my mom or even myself has made better, or maybe I'm just biased. :) Decent place though.

Definitely NOT worth the wait... Live within less than a quarter mile of the deli, and always hear buzz about checking it out, so one time a buddy and I went to get some dinner, and were greeted with a 20 minute wait.

When we were finally seated, wanted to try something different, and saw a "chocolate soda" (or something of the sort) on the menu.  Tasted like egg yolks, mixed with soda water, and chocolate syrup.  Not the best start.

The flavor overall lacked "sabor (flavor)"... Which is huge in my book.  Menu is pricey, and food just wasn't nearly as good as I had expected.  Seems like this is an establishment that has thrived on nostalgia, and within 10-15 years from now will be gone.

Okay this review is so long overdue.

The first time I went to Katella Deli was years ago.  I got myself some kind of sandwich with liver and some internal organs or meat.  It was delish!!!

I came back again for turkey day last year.  Got the turkey dinner special.  Nothing special.  The soup was okay.  My turkey was okay.  My veggies were not that good.

I did like my pumpkin pie.  That was the first time I enjoyed eating pumpkin pie.  It was delicious!!!

    3.5 stars!!

Katella Deli's pumpkin pie is yummylicious!!

Took the family here today.  I ate here a few times years ago w/ my roomate, but moved the east coast for a few years.  I remember this being a favorite of my old roomate & her friend, so I though we'd hit it up.

Service = EXCELLENT!  Our drink glasses never were never empty and the food came out so quick!

Price = EXCELLENT!  One appetizer, three kids meals (which include a huge cookie for dessert),  Two adult sandwich platters = $55.00

Food = AWESOME!  The Fried Cheese sticks were BIG and tasty.  My husband usually doesn't eat mozz sticks from other restaurants , but today he dove in and recommended that I do too! Everyone at the table enjoyed them.  The looked hand made. The maninara sauce was really good too!  My son had the chicken strips which also looked hand breaded.  The bbq dipping sauce was very good as well.  My husband and I had sandwhiches that were huge and very good.  Lots of fresh veggies on them.  I felt there were several healthy options I could choose w/o ruining my diet.

Deli = SINFUL!  We purchased a few cookies for the kids and 2 stuffed cabbage for us!  I'm not sure it's will compare to my mom's, but I hope it's as good as everything else we've had there.  I also purchased Garlic Parm Bagel Chips they have in the bakery.  YUM!!!  (so much for that diet!)  I'm definitely going to pick up some more to send to my family on the east coast (who share my love of good food :)   )  A woman in line in front of us at the Deli recommended the Cinnamon Sugar Bagel Chips as well.

We don't eat out too much because 1.  my homemade cooking is usually better 2.  restaurant food usually sucks 3.  we don't like paying for sucky food.

If you want a good meal (that doesn't suck)  this is the place to go.
