The chili dog I had here was average at best and the place was pretty shady. I'm looking for somewhere to get a good fast lunch in the area and now I can take this place off of the list. I would hit it if necessary because it was fast but only as a last resort.

I feel like a glutton every time I go to Kaspers.   For the average person, one hot dog would be enough.  Hell, if I would just take my time in eating one, one hot dog would probably be enough for me.  But no.  I can't contain myself.  I get one of their hot dogs in my hand, and suddenly I start channeling Kobayashi, the world champion hot dog eater who once ate 63 hot dogs in 12 minutes.

I walk to the counter, and blurt out  "two cheese dogs, everything on them with extra mustard please."

Damnit.  Gonna regret that later. *sigh* I just can't help myself.

Sure, the inside looks like you were warped back to the 60's , and the woman making your dog might look like the lunch lady that served up sloppy joes at your elementary school, but there's nothing like biting into one of their hot dogs.

Or two of them for that matter.

Hmmm...Perhaps, a lot has changed since these past reviews were written but I went to this Kasper's in Fremont recently and the dogs and tamales were exactly the same as the Pleasant establishment. The dogs have a good snap and flavor to them and tamales are always killer. Everything I get her I get 'with the works!'

Given it's not the fanciest place, it does the job, which is feed my hunger pains!

Place is pretty ghetto.  The chick working at the counter looked like she hated her job.  She wore this raggedy old t-shirt of a pizza place somewhere in Newark.  She asked me what i wanted and didn't even crack a smile or anything so i knew i was in for it.  Ordered my dog and she started her business.   I quietly watched her and to my surprise she stuck her hand into a holding tank and pulled out my wiener bare handed and all.  Jesus that's gross!!!!  I watch her man handle the piece of meat and and plop it between a bun.  She finishes assembling and grabs my money.  Fuck!!!  I stare in disbelief.  I look at the next customer.  Next customer orders and the wiener handling begins all over again.  Dirty hands and all.

Let's face it, hot dog cuisine is a dying breed. Aside from the Wiener-schnitzel (ugh), concert/sporting events (ugh+expensive) and boutique gourmet style places, you just don't see them on menus too often. Rarer is the solid hot dog joint. I was happy to see Kasper's, which evidently started as one of the oldest hot dog stands in CA, via Oakland in 1929.

So my co-worker and I somehow ended up with the exact same thing. A chili cheese dog and a kraut dog. The dogs themselves are long skinny types and have a good snap to the bite and good texture throughout. Not too salty, oily or fatty and I guess they don't contain preservatives either. The bun was nice and soft and was able to mostly hold up to the chili (was ok) and real shredded cheddar  (nice touch compared to cheese sauce) onslaught, although I still recommend the "spork" standby just in case. The kraut was not out of the ordinary and gave a nice  tart contrast to the dog. I also opted for a pickle on the side of the chili cheese dog to provide the same said contrast.

So I'd say this place is a 3.5 stars, cause it's not the hot dog stand like they started out (for cool old school ambiance which they have photo evidence of), and certainly, if you took the time to buy all the ingredients carefully, you could make a comparable/better dog at home (try the Frankfurters at Dittmer's in Mountain View). However as a quick  comfort food lunch goes, this place is solid.

So my kid tells me the hot dogs at Kasper's are supposed to be pretty good. We go.

Right in front of the door, sitting on a garbage can, is a woman wearing an apron, puffing away on a ciggie. She follows into the store, walks behind the counter, and has her unwashed hands in the food bin before even asking what we want.

We were out of there really quick. Oh, and she flipped us off as we left.
