How could you not love fast-food style Indian Food? When you arrive at Kasa, everything is made and ready for you to gobble up with your eyes through the glass case. You can order a dinner plate (Thali) or get little rolled up Indian "burritos" (Kati Roll). They have several dishes including Lamb Curry, Chicken Tikka Masala, Turkey Meatballs, a cheese & pepper dish, a potato dish, and several other weekly specials, matched with sides of lentils & rice. My personal favorite is the Chicken Tikka Masala Kati Roll. They make it for you right in front of your eyes, leaving your mouth watering by the time it gets to you. Beverages available include: Beer/Wine, hot Chai Tea, Mango Lassi, & a soda machine.
** if you come before 4pm they have amazing lunch special prices. -

I had always heard from my old roommate that Kasa was a must-try and finally made it out there (of course after I had moved from San Francisco to San Diego) and was thoroughly impressed! The layout of the restaurant was bright and modern and included some beautiful photography. I especially loved the wonderful communal table in the middle of the dining room.
The menu was quite approachable and included many Indian favorites like Saag Paneer, Lamb Curry, and Chicken Tikka Masala. I absolutely loved the Lamb Curry as it truly highlighted the lamb and it's natural gaminess and tastiness. The accompaniments were also fabulous! The cilantro coconut chutney was such a delight and provided a great, cool, flavor packed accent to all the main dishes. The roti bread topped it all off and made for the one deliciously, fresh combo plate.
On top of a great meal, the service was top notch, not even considering that Kasa is a walk-up, steam table kinda restaurant. We ordered the creamy, spicy, homemade Mango Lassi, and the server who had scooped our plates out, was so proud that he could put his name on that batch and with good reason since the drink was damn good.
I'd recommend Kasa to anyone looking for a quick, authentic bite in the Castro. Hope to be back soon! -

Kasa is pretty amazing. This restaurant is pretty small where you order your food at the counter and you pay at the register before you seat yourself down. They offer to go and delivery as well. I have heard about their food truck from friends and co workers but I haven't been to it myself. I did hear that they only serve their samosas on their food truck which sounds amazing!
My co workers and I usually come here pretty often and I usually order 2 kati rolls ($4.50 each) and a side of daal ($3). For the Kati rolls you usually pick which dish you want and it is rolled up inside a roti or naan like bread. It is pretty amazing. My favorites dishes for the Kati roll are the Aloo Jeera which is Cumin-spiced sautéed potatoes and their chana masala which is the garbanzo beans cooked with spices. I believe the chana masala is only there sometimes for the daily special. When I order the daal, I usually ask them to put a little bit of rice inside which is a nice touch.
I eat a lot and the food is really filling so don't feel that it is necessary to order as much as I did. You can always go back for more! ;) But this place is awesome, you should definitely check it out!Listed in: Vegan/Vegetarian Friendly

First time eating at Kasa and I am a fan! You order at the counter and watch the server scoop up your food into a metal platter that made me think of prison lunch lines for some reason. Then you order your drinks from a second worker and pay for your meal. After that, you find a seat by the tall counters or one of the few tables in the restaurant. Most of the tables were taken when we ordered, but one did clear up by the time me and my partner-in-crime(PIC) paid and started looking for seats.
We ordered 2 thali plates ($10.95), which came with roti (handmade bread), lentils, rice, yogurt, veggie salad, and chutney. I ordered the chicken tikka masala and the gobo aloo (cauliflower and potato...easily my fav dish). My PIC ordered the chicken tikka and the karahi paneer (their cheese is AMAZING). In addition, we each ordered a drink. I got the hot chai ($2.50) and my PIC ordered the mango lassi ($3).
Both of us were really satisfied with our meals and will definitely keep Kasa in mind when looking for homestyle Indian food. I could totally see myself becoming a vegetarian if I knew how to make food as delicious, hearty, and healthy as what I had at Kasa. -

A decent selection of food that is tasty and served quickly. A nice and decently priced alternative to the other counter service restaurants in the Castro.

I have been here a few times since they opened in the city. I must add that so far I have been impressed with the food.
The dosas and utthapams are one of the best in the bay area. We tried the spicy gobi chettinad masala dosa served with three different types of chutney and sambhar which was very yummy. We also tried the chole bathura which is a deep fried and puffy dough and that was good too.
The portions are generous.
The service is fantastic and staff is friendly!
taking stars of because the bathroom is unclean. I hate dirty bathrooms -

In our continuing quest for Indian food in San Francisco, we discovered, thanks to something call "Yelp", the Kasa Indian Eatery. Yelp's a perfect thingy to find new places to stuff your craw, if you had one, and Kasa was an affordable Indian homestyle that is now bookmarked as a place to go back to if I'm ever again in the area.
Take this place: we'd come off of a Sunday hike to Mount Davidson Park and were looking for an Indian restaurant nearby that was open on Sunday's before 5 PM. Yelp led us to this place on a corner in the Castro on 18th and Noe that is a little like a cafeteria and an Indian Bistro.
You get two main choices: a wrap called a Kati Roll, which is a filled (with one of the choices below plus marinated onions and chutney) roti rolled like a burrito for a inexpensive $4.50 each (order 2 or 3 for a meal) AND/OR what we had which was a Thali (A Combination Plate).
For about $11, you get an authentic homestyle round and sectioned stainless steel tray that holds many wondrous things: first, two choices of the following selection:
Chicken Tikka
Chicken Tikka Masala
Lamb Curry
Turkey Kebabs
Karahi Paneer
Aloo Jeera
or one of the Daily Veggie Specials (like today's Saag Paneer)
Also with that you get a Daal (lentil) with basmati rice, a large handmade wheat roti, a veggie salad (that is to plotz for), two chutney's (including a cilantro one) and a large spoonful of raita (yogurt).
This is a lot of very good food, served up by friendly and efficient people behind a counter. You then can order drinks or a mango lassi ($3), and find your seat in this small restaurant.
We three did the Thali with:
Chicken Tikka
Chicken Tikka Masala
Karahi Paneer
Saag Paneer
And we all agreed how real the food tasted (locally sourced or naturally raised BTW) and how much great food you can get for relatively little in SF. The daal was spicy as was the Karahi Paneer, but the perfect tempering of the raita and the fresh flavors and crunch of the fresh salad tempered this spice. With all the fresh, different textures and flavors that were served on a single platter, we found this a welcome change from the many standard Indian buffets we've had in our past, where we would tend to stick only with "what we knew".
The Chicken Tikka Masala was meaty with a sauce that did not come with that super-creamy opaque sauce, which allowed you to better taste the moist, grilled nature of the chicken. So many other Tikka Masala cream sauces try to cover up cubes of chicken that had gone dry too many hours ago, but this was done in small batches and the result was simply excellent.
Saag Paneer was really good and generous with their Paneer. Their large roti was really tasty and felt homemade rather than commercial.
The service tends to remain behind the counter and you are obligated to clear your own table and set your used dishes in a slot under a counter near the drink machine.
But this rather small place is clean, fast, and delicious; not much more to ask for in the City. We will definitely return. -

I support eateries that buy locally grown food. If it is organic to boot, that's even better. But with tastiness, prices and cleanliness this good...wow. It's my new favorite haunt. I only wish they did breakfast too.

I was kind of thrown off by this place... It's essentially a build-your-own-wrap or plate type of place. I walked up to the counter unsure of how to order... and sure enough, the person at the register just stood there with no explanation. I'll spare u the rest of the details... I went with the tikka masala wrap and a sambusa. I guess the concept is cool, but the food itself isn't that great. I thought the sambusa was good, but the chicken tikka masala was dry, not saucy at all and really lacked some flavor.
If I was in the area, I might grab a bite to eat here again, but I wouldn't go out of my way to go here. It sure as hell did not satisfy my indian craving... -

Maybe I'm not the best person to be reviewing an Indian restaurant, but I know from my experiences with good and bad meals that I have had and how to compare it to this one.
Yes, I think the variety you can order from the combo plate is great, and the server who I believe is the owner and also the chef, was very patient with me in describing what was being offered. But in the end, I didn't feel as though I was given enough food for my tastes. I typically like to eat large dinners, and this was not enough food for me. I was left feeling hungry shortly after the meal.
I was expecting to find Tandoori Chicken available or maybe a Murgh Madras. But understandably these are dishes that might be a little more expensive for this place or maybe there's not enough to be made in order for the number of people that come in.
One of my favorite Indian restaurants in the city is Roti Indian Bistro, it's not really super fine Indian dining, and it is one that I grew up with in the West Portal neighborhood. This was my yardstick.
Yes the meal was inexpensive. This is also a great place to hangout and talk it out with some friends for dinner. One of the saving graces for me was that they had a whole pint of Taj Mahel, which I finished off with a smile. -

You guys have EARNED my complete respect!
This is the best Indian wrap I've ever had! I had the spinach and Indian cheese wrap. I also had some raita (yogurt sauce) which paired perfectly with it!
It was heavy but small enough that it was the perfect serving size.
We had this catered at the office and I'm a little saddened that it's not in the Fidi :( I could eat this on a regular basis! -

The chicken tikka kathi roles and the chicken tikka thali plate is great. Amazing food for the money. I'll be coming back here again!

Is there such a thing as a 5 star fast food joint? In my opinion, there is now with Kasa. They serve kati rolls, a Kalkota street food that can be described as Indian burrito. It's actually more familiar than it sounds if you've never had it because you choose from a selection of popular Indian dishes such as chicken tikka masala and saag paneer to fill your kati flatbread. They'll add condiments, chutneys, and sauces before they roll it like one would roll a burrito. The roll is served with a cool raita dip, which helps to tame the heat if you chose to go spicy. Most guys will probably need 2 kati rolls to be full, but plenty of girls will be satiated with just one.
However tempting it may be to get yours to go, or worse to eat it on the run, DON'T! Kati rolls are delicious and seemingly compact, but pretty damn messy to eat and transport. You need every square inch of the big silver tray they serve your rolls on for the splattery mess you're about to make.
If eating Indian dishes in burrito form is not your thing, you can opt to do a platter for a little over $10 and eat with real silverware. Either way, you can enjoy your food with beers on tap! I tried the mango lassi, which had too much cardamom for my liking, but still kinda yummy. The establishment is fairly clean with a stylish decor and several Indian patrons enjoying their food as well.
For what it offers, I'd say Kasa Indian Eatery deserves all 5 stars in its price point. -

Say what? A cool hip Indian eatery that serves food on metal trays and has metal furniture? That's right.
Came to a different location for a Yelp Elite event once, and have been hooked since. The kati rolls, which don't look filling when ordering, absolutely stuff you. I think they have a lunch combo that features two kati rolls. I almost always go with the chicken tikka masala. The parking at this location is a lot better, and I think they closed their Fillmore location. I always notice someone in line ordering vegetarian items and behind the bar, I spied different kinds of beer available. The quick service and interior remind me of a higher class fast food joint, but without the greasiness and feeling of clogging your arteries. All in all, a good place to get quick and tasty Indian food for a good price too. -

Good food with limited options. This place isn't like "food-walmart", but I have been here twice and both times it hits the spot. Finding a parking is like a challenge since its like in a neighborhood with NO parking garages but lots of neighborhood businesses. For the price, you can find a buffet, but whatever. Food is good. it's like Indian In-n-Out!

Kasa is mobile indian food. kasa started with a physical location and expanded to food trucks recently,
locale: eat real festival (9/23)
menu: samosa(3) bowls (5), kati rolls(5)
fillings for katie rolls & (rice) bowls :
-chicken tikka masala
-saag paner
-gobi aloo (cauliflower)
sampling: katie rolls (5)
-"flaky, buttery handmade roti, lime marinated onions and cilantro chutney rolled up with filling"
-katie rolls kind of small, not a lot of filling, eating mostly dough, not a lot of flavoring. some chicken, mostly rice and dough
foodnotes:
-small size makes offerings on the pricey side.
-was sized reduced cuz of eat real? not sure
-may retry sometime else at a later date and location.
-kati roll looks similar to a burrito but isn't, totally different and similar.Listed in: Mobile food trucks/vendors on…

Review from Mansi A.
Yea, no. Cute establishment, graphics, and overall concept, but the food quality is just not there.
I wanted to order the chicken tikka masala kati roll, however, on a 2pm on Sunday afternoon they ran out of chicken tikka masala. Say what? Really? Instead, the woman suggested I get the chicken tikka roll, and she'd spoon the masala over the top of it. Great.
Anyway, just as I had experienced at the Kasa location on Fillmore (which is now closed, mind you), this was was not up to par. The roti was a slight improvement upon last time, but the inner filling was still just so MEH. For $5 for a miniature-sized burrito concoction, this was NOT good. Kati rolls I've had in India, England, and even in New York have superceeded that of Kasa's. It's unfortunate, because the Bay Area has yet to present a decent kati roll. -

Who would have thought of Indian fast food? The geniuses at Kasa did. This is not your typical Indian Restaurant with traditional Indian food. They serve "Kati Rolls", which are like "Indian Burritos" and you have several meat and vegetable choices to pick from. If you're very hungry I'd recommend two rolls because one won't fill you up or you can order the "Thali" (plate) which comes with Rice, Meat, Vegetables, Lentils (Daal) and Salad. And if you have room for dessert, try the Mango "Lassi" (a yogurt drink that has the consistency of a smoothie).
I would highly recommend the Aaloo Jeera (potato & cumin) Roll or the Karahi Paneer (cheese, green peppers & tomato) Roll if you're a vegetarian. And for meat lovers I'd recommend their Turkey Kebab Roll.
What's also unique about them is that they have a Truck going around town, which stops at different locations in the city, so you can get a taste of Kasa without having to go to their Restaurant in the Castro. To find out where the truck will be next, go to their website or follow them on Twitter. -

This place is so incredibly yummy!
It sucks thats its like an hour away from my house, else I would eating here pretty much much more regularly :(
All their veggie rolls are full of awesomeness.. they always have a paneer one, a gobi one, an aloo jeera one.. they also have a changing special.. today's was saag, which didn't look that appetizing
the thali option is pretty good too!
they have this mango drink called mazaa here which is also really really awesome! -

This is not an Indian restaurant it's a fast food joint and a lousy one at that. The food is pre-prepared, they scoop it into trays. There are two, count em two entrees on the menu, and the food is TASTELESS.
Kasa is appropriately located in the slag section of 18th St. in the Castro. -

I really wanted to like this place, as the menu looked great and I'd heard good things about it. Unfortunately the food was pretty bland and uninspired. I've tried it a few times, thinking that maybe I'd just hit a bad night the first time or two, but I've never gotten anything there that I'd actually say was good or worth ordering again.

I was hungry and had 2 kati rolls: chicken tikka masala and the lamb.
The chicken was nice and spicy and delicious.
The lamb was good too, but got a bit heavy towards the end.
Overall, it was really good. Maybe I'll try the plate next time... -

Behold! Off in the distance a Indian eatery oasis teeming with exotic flavors and irresistible aromas.
Step past the threshold into a space reminiscent of a recycled tuna can, assembled from cold war era sheet metal. Although the place could use a few cushions, or a woven tapestry to add some warmth, the flavorful food is what brings me back.
I have yet to be disappointed with the quality or variety here.
The staff is always friendly and the Kati roll lunch special is a great value. -
Review from Mike I.
Chicken Tikka Masala was not very good.
Lamb was bland and a bit minty.
Saag Paner - cheese and spinach was the highlight of the meal.
Not the best indian food around the neighborhood. -

I like this place a lot! When they say simple home made type food, that is what you actually get for once!
I got the karahi paneer kati roll. I grew up in India, so its really hard for me to imagine why I'm paying $5 for a roti with veggies inside it. That being said, I quite enjoyed the kati roll. Although you would need about 3 for a dinner type meal, so it can end up being quite expensive. The kati roll in itself was quite tasty, moderately spiced and comes with yogurt. I would like to try the other vegetarian ones, they seem interesting.
The place has a cafe style system, with not very much seating. No real points for ambience or anything. -

Yelp tells me I'm a regular at this place. That's only amazing because I just started going there a few weeks ago...and I can't stop. You might think it's a little embarrassing to walk into a place less than 24 hours after your first visit and order the same exact thing you had the day before from the same dude who took your order the first time. It's not. It only starts to get a little weird on day 3...or 4.
Regardless, this stuff is good. Super good. The Kati rolls are delicious. Even 4 days in a row. -

OMG the chai. They have a little hand-written sign that says its the best in the city, and they're not joking. It's way better than the chai down the street at Samovar.

Came here for a lunch special while floating through castro.
Kati roll with tikka masala
- very flavorful wiht the right amount of spices and savory juicy chicken
- came with a unique tasting saltier yogurt
- the roti was crispy, soft, and buttery
- my favorite part of the lunch deal
Side of Daal
- very salty, but otherwise bland, beany soup
- would not get again
Mangolassi
- upgraded the lunch special for $1 to get mangolassi instead of soda
- seems like they used the same salty yogurt that came with the roll
- had black seeds(?) which did not go well with the mango, i would have rather they used plain yogurt to make the mangolassi
bottom line, i would come here for only the kati roll and maybe try their thali -
Review from Kedar D.
Finding light, fresh, flavorful and authentic North Indian food at a restaurant is almost impossible, not only in the US, but even in India itself (my parents are from India, and I lived there for over a year as an adult, so I know the food quite well). In India, people expect restaurant food to be heavy and fatty (the healthier stuff you can get at home, so why buy it from a restaurant, or so goes the reasoning), and I think most Indian restaurant owners in the US have that same mentality.
The end result is that 99% of North Indian food in the US is dull, oily and woefully generic (find me a North Indian joint that doesn't have tikka/butter chicken or aloo gobi/mutter paneer and I'll buy you dinner at said establishment).
As such, I had high hopes for Kasa, which sounded like it was aiming for something different. It looks almost like a Chipotle and you stand in line and pick your dishes. To be fair, the food here was pretty good, but my criticisms stem from a lack of variety and some unusual decisions in how they make standard Indian foods (such as dal and roti).
You can get either a kati roll ($4.50 a piece for this flaky tortilla-esque bread, filled with your choice of curry) or a thali plate ($10.50, and comes with rice, two curries and some side salads). Unfortunately, the kati rolls are not vegan (the dough is made with butter); similarly, the roti is not vegan (which is amazing to me, as roti is almost always vegan, whereas naan is usually not).
As such, I opted for the thali plate. Of the five vegetarian curries, only two of them were vegan, which was disappointing. This was sign number one that Kasa is not aiming to offer the simple, light, flavorful Indian food that I dream of.
The only two vegan dishes were the aloo gobi (sigh, how predictable) and an aloo jeera (potatoes and cumin).
To make matters worse, Kasa doesn't offer brown rice. As I hate white rice, and they couldn't give me roti (which is traditionally vegan and made of wholewheat), Kasa did offer to give me more of a curry, so I got an extra heaping of the aloo gobi. That was nice of them.
The food wasn't bad at all. I'd like more variety (two potato dishes is a bit much), and it would be great to have vegan options of dishes that are usually vegan anyway (such as dal), but the food here was about as light and simple as I've found in the US.
If they had more vegan options for curries, and offered vegan breads (they said they can make vegan bread with advance notice, but it takes them about 40 minutes or more to make the stuff), as well as homemade chai with almond or coconut milk, Kasa would get another star. For the price, too, it's not a bad deal, as you get a pretty filling meal. Kasa has much room for improvement, but if you're looking for decent Indian food in the Mission, this is your spot. -

I inadvertantly stumbled across this restaurant because they provide the food for the Red And White Fleet's Indian Dinner Buffet and Dance http://www.yelp.com/bi... . While I'm not an expert on Indian cuisine, the Indian Tour Group that was with us seemed very happy.
I really enjoyed their food, they had different chutneys, Roti, Raita (yogurt) Chicken Tikka Masala, Karahi Paneer (my favorite) Daal's. Vegi Salad and a few other dishes. They even had this really good dessert that isn't on the menu. It was wonderful and we couldn't get enough of them. They are called Gulab Jamun and are fried dough in a cardamom and rosewater syrup. Think of a cake doughnut hole, fried and dipped in heaven. YUM.
The servers were wonderful, especially the young man in dreads who talked to us for a bit after dinner and asked us how we enjoyed dinner. -
Review from Samir C.

I'm declaring it... Kasa has the best Indian food in the city. Not because the food has the most complex flavors or is made with the crazy exotic ingredients. It's exactly the opposite - simplicity which makes it so good. To top it off it is fairly inexpensive and they also has some awesome beers. I'm here very often - once a week for sure because I crave it so much.
Kasa mainly serves north Indian food: various Kati rolls with different vegetarian or meat fillings and thalis. The thalis come with two main dishes, rice, daal, roti, salad, and yogurt. They are quite large - way too much food for one person in my opinion. So bring a friend and split it.
My usual order is a karahi paneer wrap and a side of daal and rice in one bowl (they'll combine the two if you ask) for a total of about $8. This includes a side of yogurt or salad as well.
The chicken tikka masala and and turkey kababs are great too. I haven't tried my wrap "anda style" (with egg) but my friends order it often.
Add a bottle of Tripel Karmeleit and you have a hearty meal with booze for about $13.
I'd give this place 6 stars if I could! -
Review from Eric A.
This place is located conveniently in the castro, and it's good!
I personally would get their entree (on a plate, not the kati roll), simply because you get more food. The Indian Burrito Wrap is just a bit on the small side.
I did thoroughly enjoy their Paneer, I wasn't a fan of their Chicken Tikki Masala as I've had better (perhaps because most indian restaurants I go to, they dose it with a ton of butter), so my opinion is jaded :)
If you want something quick to eat, it's a a indian version of all the taqueria's available. -

Soooo Good!
I'm used to more "unhealthy" Indian food (i.e. cream based curry), so Kasa was a total delight when I discovered them walking to Dolores Park one day.
For the price you will walk away full and happy.
If you're looking for something healthy, delicious and different than your typical lunch or dinner, check them out. You will not be let down! -

I started going here around the time that they opened and every time I've been its a great experience, both from the food and service perspective. I've been there about 10 times and I think I've ordered the same thing all ten times. Kasa offers a small variety of choices include Kati Rolls with different fillings, Thalis, and specials on various days.
I've always ordered the Kati rolls because they taste so darn good. My favorite is the lamb kati roll and the chicken tikka masala roll is a close second. I like dipping them in the yogurt I get on the side before I devour eat scrumptious bite. Its very reasonably priced too. I get 2 Kati rolls for around $10 and if I want a third its around a total of $13. 2 rolls are filling for me, but if you are super hungry you can add on a third.
One thing about eating there is that it always feels cold. Not sure if its the metal decor or if the windows are always open, but I'm always cold there.
Definitely recommend and will be back to chow down again. -

After my kiddy day, I was ready to get back into the land of adults, so me and the BFF went to Kasa Indian in the Castro. It was pretty good. I don't do Indian food that often but this place might just change my mind.
I had the chicken tikki masala with the potatoes which was great--not too strong for my western taste buds--though probably a bit bland for my Hindi speaking friends. The chicken had just the right mix of spices, and the potatoes hit the spot too.
My friend had the lamb, which she liked, and the vegetarian dish which she didn't. I'm not sure why exactly--she just said she "wasn't into it."
It was super cheap and I could totally see coming here just to grab some of their wraps and take them down to Delores Park on a nice sunny day and have them there. It isn't really that much of a sit down experience though. It has a cafeteria style ordering--you stand in line, point and choose. Someone else in a review said it was like Chipotle in that sense--that's a good description of the ordering process.
I didn't really like the outdoor tables and chairs either--the metallic look is kind of an eyesore.
Next time, we will definitely take it to go. -

I like the wraps here. Its like curry stuck between some nan bread. Very handy for a quick bite.
