Pulled pork sliders were awesome and my fiance enjoyed his gouda burger as well. While the food was tasty, hats off to our server Jennifer. She was really excited to be working there and full of great recommendations of breweries in the area to check out. I really liked that she stopped by more as a casual conversation and just making sure we knew she was around without needing anything without being pushy.
Food was tasty, service was excellent, beer was great as well. What more could you want? :) -

Not too shabby. I know there are a few other Karl Strauss locations around the San Diego area, but I can only comment on this one. Had some dinner with some more visiting family and I picked the place out because it was right down the road (walking distance) of their hotel in the Gaslamp.
Simple menu and selection (none of the complicated multi-menu system ordering of several nearby restaurants) and great food! The only issue I had was the size of the place. Some of the seating was right in the path of the walkway so there was a bit of scooting whenever people walked by.
Service was great and the waitress even recommended the mac'n'cheese (awesome!) to us.
None of the pretentious micro-brewery attitudes often served up at some of the other brew-pubs, so that was a plus as well. I am a fan of Karl Strauss beers (Full Suit is great) but I didn't have anything this time, and nothing was detracted from the experience.
Maybe I had some unrealistic expectations as I was expecting something bigger; a little more like the Stone brewery/bistro in Escondido, but all in all a great place with good prices and food. -
Review from Barbra C.
I love this spot as another option for lunch in my workhood... The meal options are always yummy, from app's to entree's... and of course, there's the great diversity of drinks too. It's always awesome when they're debuting different brews and they offer free tastings to all their diners. My most fave order is the mac n cheese... and my coworker taught me how you can order the prime rib slices to mix into it... gah so delicious! I think for the quality of the location and the service, the price makes sense, though it's a teensy bit on the high side. And really, for how busy this place is, I love that there's never a long wait, even for the lunch crowd.
Still, for customer service, location, and the diversity of options to provide an escape of the Italian mafia majority of this neighborhood, I so appreciate this place. -

I had an impressive lunch with my boss Pedro and some coworkers when we visited our San Diego law office on Friday, Feb. 3, 2012 and i have to say that i was very impressed with Karl Strauss atmosphere and food quality. The establishment had its lunch crowd but we manage to get seated right away. I had the beer brined pork chops and it was a beautiful presentation and very scrumptious. The pork chops were juicy and tender, not dry like other places. My boss and coworker had the mac and cheese and it looked amazing. They have a nice selection of mac an cheese. The service was great and very attentive. Waiter gave us a sample of windansea hefeweizen. A bit pricey for lunch but its okay because my boss was treating... :-)

Expensive meals, staff seems pushed to get you to buy more things.
Very loud, hard to have a conversation - even at lunch
Enjoyed the portabello sandwich - they were kind enough to replace the fries with slaw. -

Stumbled on this place by accident while exploring downtown San Diego after walking through Little Italy.
Blown away by the food. Tried several menu choices (braised lamb, duck, stews, you name it). I haven't tried an entree or a main dish I didn't like. To top it off they are really generous with beer samples, and their beer is some of the best I've tasted. The red trolley off the tap isn't as good as the bottled red trolley beer, but its still good.
If you decide to eat here make sure you take advantage of their beer sampling. 2/3 of the time I go here they comp'ed a beer order. The only beer I didn't like was the 'flandidly anders' ale, which tasted like sour grapes. If you don't sample the beer, you are seriously missing out on more than half of the Karl Strauss experience.
Why didn't I give it 5 stars? There wasn't a 4.75 option. Bad yelp! -

I like this place. Its only about two blocks from my house, so a good place to grab a pint and a bite. The simple regular things here are really good, like the mixed greens salad and the tomato bisque. I had the Sunday flat bread here over the weekend, and it was one of those moments where i should have stayed with my regular choices. I was sold in it because it said it had arugula, but it came out with mixed baby lettuce mix instead. not a single bite of arugula. Sadness.
Next time, soup, salad, maybe steal a few french fried from someone in my party, and a pint of tower 10. -

My name is Karl so this place has to be good!
Food was good overall, but the prices are quite steep.
I suggest the mac n cheese.
Steak was normal, mashed potatoes were really good.
We hard a party of 8 so they forced a 18% tip on top.
It was pretty empty for a Saturday night.
Right next to the W hotel downtown.
Pretty easy to find street parking.
Not in the busiest part of downtown. -

We were only here for beer and the garlic fries. Beer was great. I had the Woodie. Husband had the Flan-Diddly-Anders and the Blacks Beach. He was also a fan. Service was attentive and friendly. Garlic parmesan fries were yummy. Good place to kick back with a beer and a friend. Will definitely be drinking more Karl Strauss in the future.

Always great food at Karl Strauss. They have some awesome varieties of mac and cheese.
Last time I visited this location with a couple of friends we got there as happy hour was about to end (we didn't even think about it). The waitress hurried over to make sure we had an opportunity to get a order in for happy hour before it was too late. -

Judgmental Hospitality Student Quick Analysis:
In regards to Mac n Cheese they are p4p greatest in San Diego.
In regards to beer selection, they are top 5 P4P in San Diego.
I must say my friend did not like his Mahi. Well guess what? He is not doing the review, and I warned him to not eat fish at a damn Brewery known for its Mac n Cheese. If he were an item on Yelp I would 1 star him because of lack of judgement and stubbornness.
Karl Strauss kicks ass. -
Review from Nick C.
Brewery/ Restaurant with craft brews and filling food.
Karl Strauss offers several different types of craft beers, along with American cuisine. I tried the beer burger and several types of mac and cheese. Most of the items were around $10-$15 dollars, but at least the food was filling.
The beer selection consisted of Red Ales, IPAs, and other typcial styles. If you like beer paring this is a decent place to go. The menu has suggestions of what type of beer to get with what type of food. The pairings that I had went hand and hand. If you are not a beer person, then this place might not be the best place to go. -

Huge fan of Karl Strauss as I've been drinking and eating here for many years. I always like to frequent places that are San Diego born, and this place doesn't disappoint.
On my last trip I tried a really tasty Coffee Stout that was amazing. I'm so glad they started trying new things with their food and beer.
For dinner I shared an order of Firecracker Chicken with a buddy and the Chorizo Burger. Both were tasty. The chicken had a nice spicy kick and the burger had the wonderful taste of one of my favorite Mexican meats!
The service was good as usual, and they are always willing to let you try a taster before ordering a pint, which makes for a no risk beer experience.
For good food, beer and service, give this place a chance. -

Just looking for a place with good beers - this place was great. Great food, the beer was good and the service was prompt and considerate.
Don't know why it's marked as 'Not Good for Kids'. Kids' menu, cool coloring paper... enough to keep 3 young kids entertained for the evening. -

Didn't really try anything on the menu.. simply just went for Happy Hour.. had the Boneless Buffalo Wings n WOW!!!.. I CAN HONESTLY SAY THESE ARE THE BEST BONELESS WINGS I'VE HAD... VERY TENDER N VERY GREAT TASTING!.. I will definitely come here again.. I'm curious n pretty sure the rest of the food will be amazing!
Oh, n the waiter was on it with the drinks.. soon as he would see it on empty he would bring another round.. I LIKE THAT! -

Went there with some friends after a day of work and looking for some good food. The place is cool, nice atmosphere and lots of TV with sports on. Comfy booths, and a good selection of food. LOTS of beer choices. Im not a beer drinker but I have no problem with food cooked with beer. (weird I know).
I got one of the burgers from the menu. It arrived as it was ordered, slightly medium well. It was SUPER juicy and had LOTS of flavor. The bacon was amazing and the mushroom/onion topping was a great addition. It was supposed to come with onion rings on it but I guess they left them off since I ordered a side of rings as well. I specifically asked if the rings were beer battered (my FAVORITE) the server very confidently said "of course they are" , ok sold, i wanted some. They WERE NOT beer battered. They were breaded and tasted like the kind you get from a bag at the supermarket.
The service was OK. Had to wait for refills and we were never really checked on. It wasnt even that busy so -1 star for that. and -1 star for my food (especially the rings). The others in my party really enjoyed their food
(the pork chops and the bird bird mac n cheese).
I would come back to give it another shot, but I will try something else. -

Appetizers weren't that great.
Calamari didn't have any flavor.
Nothing memorable about this place. -

First time here while visiting San Diego. We bellied up to the bar and had an awesome bartender. He was super attentive and seemed almost as enthusiastic as I was each time I ordered a different beer.
We had eaten at Panera just a couple hours before so we weren't starving but still ordered the spinach artichoke dip, which was pretty good down to the last bite.
While there, we sipped on a few different brews, all of them being quite tasty: a seasonal witbier (can't remember the name but it wasn't the hefeweizen), the Boardwalk Black Rye and the Red Trolley Ale. I really wanted to try the Tower 10 IPA but they were out. But everything we tried was really yummy.
I'm glad my buddy had traveled here from Phoenix a few months prior and told me about how much he enjoyed Karl Strauss. I will surely stop back in next time I'm in town. -

A great place. The beers are outstanding with bombers and growlers to go and the food equally good. . Nine craft beers always on tap with the 10th tap as a ever changing surprise. Their Two Tortugas was the tenth tap during our visit. They also offer a full bar if beer isn't your thing. As far as the food goes we only had appetizers this time around while sampling a the brewery selection at the bar. It was good. I recommend the sweet stinky fries (sweet potato fires topped with gorgonzola) and the chicken wings. Awesome. Tuesday is cask night where a select cask fermented beer is available and changes from week to week. I think they tap the cask at 3PM and it always sells out quickly. The servers were knowledgeable of the beers they offer as and suggested some of their favorite food offerings. Just a fun crowd to be around. An easy going place with a great vibe that feels local. I'll be back.

It was our last night in San Diego and the hubby and I decided to walk somewhere for dinner rather than to get our car from valet at our hotel. I was in the mood for steak so we chose this place since it was only about 4 blocks away. Sooo glad we chose this!
Our server, Thuy, was so nice and informative! She suggested we start with the hummus (made daily) since it was Happy Hour and only $5. It was sooo yummy! It came with warm, seasoned pita bread. YUM.
I don't remember the beers the hubby ordered, but they were both very good (I'm not a huge beer drinker, so me complimenting the beer is a big thing). The sirloin came with garlic mash and fresh green beans. The sirloin was sitting in this delish mushroom brown sauce (I could drink this stuff). He ordered the BBQ chicken mac and cheese. I'm not too fond of eating a huge plate of mac and cheese, but he seemed to enjoy it.
Overall, we enjoyed everything! I liked it more than The Yard House :) -
Review from Suong N.
Cheeseburger was dry, bun was stale and cold. BBQ chicken salad was a disgusting sloppy mess with WAY too much barbecue sauce.
Our server took our orders and that was it. He had an attitude towards me from the moment we sat down because I didn't order any alcohol. Someone else brought out our food and condiments. The one and only time he came to check on my boyfriend and his beer (he didn't ask me how my food was or anything!) he saw my glass of Coke was empty but kept walking. I literally stood up and shout after him to ask for a refill, and even then another server brought it to me.
Although my boyfriend offered to get the bill I later insisted on paying for dinner just so he couldn't leave him a tip he didn't deserve. Hope you like those six cents, sir. -

Had the Thursday night cast brew which was very smooth. half portions of sweet potato and garlic fires. Great. Substituted beef for the turkey bleu burger. Very good, moist, lots of flavor.
Server was busy but he was very attentive. Love Karl Strauss. -

Our server was downright awesome! My boyfriend is picky eater royale and our server was more than accommodating to make whatever he ordered exactly what he wanted, even to the point of telling him not to order one item and to get something else because it would make him happier. Having spent the past six years in the brewery industry I (sorry, but true) have become a bit of a beer snob and I must say I LOOOOVE their Amber. I only wish they would branch out and it would become available at Total in my local area....
Food on average was pretty tasty. The portions were definitely large enough. I ended up not trying the mac n cheese, even though that is what I told myself I was going to get before I even got there... But alas, I am on a club sandwich kick and they happen to have one. I did change the bread on it to ciabatta and even our server said that was pure genius!
I of course was completely drawn to their tiramisu made with beer... it was eh. alright. But I am a tiramisu freak and have a rating system just for it alone and the top two are going to be hard to beat by anyone!
Overall I would definitely be back again. Great downtown spot, moderately decent amount of parking around.
See you next year Karl! -

Beer flight of micro-brews for $4 during happy hour! Atmosphere is energetic but not bar crazy - locals & travelers visit here. Food is GREAT! Beer flights & pulled pork sandwich & portobello mushroom sandwich were our choices - yummy squared! Service was perfect - attentive but not too much. 5 TVs to watch games at the bar. Great downtown location. Did I mention how tasty their micro-brewed beer is? Cause it's epic! Go here; you won't regret it.

Come here a lot for Sunday brunch and I've been here a few times for their regular dinner menu. I always enjoy the food, service is always great, I've never had an unpleasant server. A few days ago I came here for a friends 21st birthday and it was one of the best visits.
I got the BBQ mac and cheese. It was delicious! I love it because it had caramelized onions with the cheese and BBQ twist. One of my friends got a steak and it was huge! It was probably almost 1 pound. I had a bite and it was delicious. He asked for it medium rare and it was perfect. If you want a good steak and don't want to pay as much as Ruth Chris, this is the place! -

Our second visit in San Diego in two years, we definitely wanted to have another meal at Karl Strauss. So open arriving in town late on a Sunday afternoon, this would be our dinner place. It is within walking distance of the Manchester Grand Hyatt and is open on a Sunday night.
I had their Chicken Tortilla Soup - good, very good in fact, but not the best I've ever had. Not enough pieces of chicken and now as thick as I would like, but decent just the same.
On the plus side, their Spicy Hummus appetizer was very unique and indeed spicy! Not typical hummus, but since there is plenty of good beer available at Karl Strauss, it's worth the eating.
Speaking of the "main course," I tried a featured daily beer, their Berliner Weiss german beer. Sehr Gut!!! Fantastic beer - but not always available, but ask for it. You never know.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Tried the BBQ Chix Mac, Pastrami Sandwich, Sweet Potato Fries, and Ahi Poke.
The BBQ Chix was good. Everyone in my party agreed. It had a hint of BBQ, which was a good mix with the Gruyere cheese. It was a bit pricy at about $15.
The Pastrami was not very good. I will take The Hat over this, any day. It was dry, and there was too much bread to meat. The bread was hard, and not very tasty.
The Sweet Potato Fries were well seasoned and yummy. Warning: the ranch dip comes with a sriracha (spicy) happy face, which one of my party members could not take. I like spicy, but I thought the fries were yummier without the sauce. They were well seasoned and crisp.
The Ahi Poke does not taste traditional, but it is very tasty-- sweet and spicy.
Overall the food was pretty good, but not the best.
Some of the waitresses have attitudes, and our waitress was slow on the refills. I expect better service from a mid-price ranged American restaurant.
Also, the area around the restaurant has ups and downs. We went late at night, and there were a lot of bums getting ready to sleep for the night. They were nice. I saw one checking his internet on his Blackberry. But they are a bit of a hazard to try to walk around.
Overall, for the price I expected a little bit better. -

I was reluctant to go here for a couple of reasons.
1. For the last year I have been buying pony kegs and bombers of their beers and have become such a huge fan of their wares that I did not want a sub-par restaurant visit to ruin that experience.
2. I have become such a fan of their beer that if I had had a great restaurant experience I feared I would become more than a mere fan and turn into a gushing-groupie-fanboi.
My wife talked me into dinner here for my birthday and everything was exceptional. Beer was great as expected but the food was fantastic. I can see myself being a happy regular at this brewery-restaurant.
Thanks to our server, Noah, for the birthday pint glass and excellent service.
I highly recommend the "Tower 10" IPA with the "Beer Burger".

Always a favorite.
We take the coaster train from N. County and get off at the Santa Fe Depot.
A few blocks later, we're at KS.
The kids love the tomato soup, nuggets, mac n cheese (of course, who doesn't).
I always change it up with either a huge salad, or a burger no bun but lettuce.
Try the boneless wings, they are super duper delish, especially if ask for grilled chicken, and not fried! -

One of our fave places to go as it's walking distance. The beer is great, I especially like Woodie Gold and Red Trolley, there are always a few guest beers too. The food is standard Brewpub fare. I like the Ahi Poke starter, the Ahi Salad, and also the Tree Hugger Mac 'n' cheese. Fish and chips - Nyeh, could take or leave.
Service depends on who you get, there is one member of waitstaff there who is just scary mean. Others are great. Just depends on the seating gods.
Always busy when I've been there, and has friendly boisterous atmosphere. You can take the beer home in a Growler, if you like them on Facebook you can get promotional codes for cheaper Growlers. -

Draft brews are all awesome here. Lady bartenders and staff were all very helpful and gave my buddy and I free samples of all their beers on tap.. My favorite would have to be the Amber Lager for sure..
Food was also good. Ordered the fried calamari, bbq bacon burger, and nachos. Would definitely come back. -

I came to this location mainly to pick up a bottle opener for my dad as a souvenir, but stayed for dinner since the menu looked good. Being a plain eater, I did a double take when I saw mac & cheese on the menu, so I had to try it. The waiter brought by a sample of the Woodie Gold beer to compliment the meal & I'm glad he did, the beer was super tasty & went along perfectly with the M&C. The portion was big enough to take half home as leftovers (which didn't reheat well but whatever). Great place to sample some new beer & have dinner, I'd return for sure

I was in the downtown location on a Sunday night after a Chargers game. My friend was waiting to catch a train to Anaheim, so we decided to grab some grub and beers. We sat at the bar so we could watch the game. Our bartender was AWESOME! (I think her name was Ashley) We shared the hummus, which was some of the best I've ever had. Of courses, the beer was amazing! Unfortunately, they had run out of Oktoberfest, which just means I will have to go back soon! :)

Hmm I still like the La Jolla location better than this one, but I gotta say the food and booze is still damn good.
Came here for a friend's 21st recently, and even though our party was 1) late, 2) obnoxious, and, 3) young, the service was great and our waiters weren't too annoyed with us.
The Mac on Tap is where it's at, but I also like their salads. And I LOVE their beers, but you can get them other than this joint. -

So the bf and i came down to SD for some us time and since he likes to try different dark beers or "brewery" beers, i found this on my GPS and we decided to give it a try.
So we walked in, had a drink at the bar before getting seated and had this odd waitress. For some odd reason we felt a bit racism from our waitress or either she was having a bad day because she kept staring us down and shrugging us everytime my bf tried to ask about the beers i mean dude you serve brewery beer and if you hate your job go home. Being me i hate horrible service and i am not afraid to say so. I ask for a manager and she ignored me so we just paid with no tip and left.
3 stars for the bartender he was probably the most decent guy there he actually welcomed us when there was no hostess in sight and offer us drinks and even chatted us up. minus two for that b*#($... i couldnt even rate the food because she took forever to return to take our orders. -

I was on the fence about 3-4 stars the first time I came here so I decided to go back to make a concrete decision.
The bad music and kind of stale crowd and expensive menu put me at 3...but the good beer and delicious food and very nice waitstaff moved me to 4.
BEER: I get the ones with high alcohol content. It only a takes a couple and you will be buzzed and happy.
FOOD: I've sampled many items on the menu and love them all. The fried portabello mushrooms are unique and flavorful. Vegetarian black bean soup could have used a little salt or spice but it was healthy and not bad. The ahi poke is outstanding, generously piled into a bowl with crispy wonton chips. The nacho's are actually really good too... Some of my friends got the burgers and they were HUGE. Love the garlic/parmesian fries. Mac n Cheese is incredible!!! But its expensive... Cant go wrong with the dessert either. This place is a dieters nightmare!!! You can't leave without consuming thousands of calories.
ATMOSPHERE: The bar at happy hour is an interesting place to meet a diversity of people (good and bad). The booth's in the restaurant are really tiny. You better like the person you are squeezed next too. The place kinda has a chainy feel to it, but not in the cozy tgi fridays way, more like an awkward inbetween that is kinda unsettling.. .But you get over that pretty fast when the liquid bread starts pouring down your throat.
All in all, I'm not going to rush back here but I do like this place so I need to be fair and give it 4 stars. -

The beer was good. Food was just okay. Service was decent. But, this is one strange crowd. It was like we were there with a bunch of people straight out of Grease (the movie) but in 2011.
Strange. I'd go back..but only to drink beer. -
Review from Robert F.
3.5, rounding up cause I have been often, and never have a bad time. This goes for all their locations, which I have been too many many times. Sorrento Valley has unique Japanese gardens, but this location has a cool urban feel near the W Hotel. They have always been offering good microbrews, and in some ways it feels more old school than the new school crafts. But the beers really are very drinkable, the amber and pales are good, the windansea hefeweizen is one of the better American hefe's, and I usually don't bother with that genre cause I like German Weiss beers too much. The food is good too, not great, but better than most bar food. I like the boneless wings, the buffalo turkey burger, the salads and the Mac and cheeses.
