This is a tiny airport with no frills and no extra shine to it.  I love it.  Any airport where I can get checked in, through security and to my gate in under ten minutes is amazing to me.  I don't rate airports on nice coffee shops or stores where I can pay 300% more for everyday items.  I don't need to be coddled or caressed when I travel.  In fact, the faster I can get in and get the hell out of an airport, the happier I am.  I'd rather trudge briefly through a small crappy airport, than wander aimlessly around O'Hare until I find a shuttle, to take me to the bullet train, that takes me to the mine shaft, that takes me to my rental car.

I think it is a little too bare bones for many Yelpers, but I'd take MCI over any other airport I've ever been to.

This was my first layover in Kansas City and my experience was mehh.. It's a small airport in the middle of nowhere, it's hot as hell with no ventilation and it basically just there. I was pretty unimpressed with it. I walked around and it was pretty simple. There was nothing really impressive about it.

The only advantage I did see was that there weren't many people around so the lines to everything is pretty short and quick (which is good when your trying to catch a connecting flight). Also, since it's small I literally had to walk 2 seconds to move on to my next gate. It was def. not one of my favorite airports, but I wasn't there too long so it wasn't too bad.

So this airport causes me to really have to dividing opinions.

First, the reasons why I love MCI.  The airport is never crowded, there are never big lines and it's easy to get around.  The large sprawling design really spreads things out so there is plenty of parking in front of the terminals.  It's never more than a 5 minute walk to/from your gate.  The security lines never get very long because each checkpoint is there for only 5 or 10 gates.  Security is usually smooth and whenever I interact with the US Airways staff here it is a good experience.

Now, the reasons why I hate this airport.  There is nothing to do here.  God forbid your flight is delayed.  Once you pass security there is literally nothing expect a snack cart, some seats and restrooms.  This is awful for passengers and I'm sure is awful for the airport shops.  The segregated design also means there is no way to actually put in a lounge, so there is only one lounge still remaining at MCI and I'm sure that will be closing in the near future.

It's really a pipe dream, but the airport needs to be rebuilt to have a more modern design so that the entire airport is accessible airside.

All the pluses of this airport mean I can usually show up pretty close to my flight and just wait in the seating area for 20 minutes or so.  But, whenever I have a delay I know I'll be in for some good ol' fashioned sitting and reading.

Before I begin, read this disclaimer: I HATE Kansas City.

Almost everything about Kansas City SUCKS!

If you found offense with that previous statement, by all means, skip to another review.

If you weren't offended, then I'll begin.

The pro is that this is a more modern airport. Much tinier than other ones, but still manages to be annoying.

If you want some coffee for example, and you have already checked in, guess what. You'll have to go through the security gate, get your grub, and then go through the entire process all over again. Speaking of food, there's not a lot of options.

The luggage guys are the worst though. This is where the one star comes into play. The very last time I was at KC airport, I was charged extra for a heavy suitcase. I mean, I was cool about that part. Keep in mind, I was already feeling stressed out, and had a general bad time there. I was not a happy camper. Suspiciously though, the luggage guy seemed a little bit too happy about that. Strangely enough, he had the face of a creep.

So I had to pay. Well, I paid with cash, and without so much as asking me, he goes "okay, that was so and so in total, and here's my tip!" In other words, instead of giving me the change back, he just went right ahead and kept all the change himself. On top of that, the force in which his words were expressed was overly aggressive, intimidating, and just overall mean. You just had to have been there. He was such an a******. Not even NYC cab drivers do this. I know its good manners to tip, but a tip is earned, not expected or demanded.

He sped off quick before I could say anything. By that point though, I wanted to get out of KC so bad, I had no energy left to fight. Which was probably why this luggage guy probably singled me out. The luggage dude just confirmed to me why Kansas City was, and is nothing more than a s*** town. (Long story about how I came to this conclusion, but that's a whole other book waiting to be written.)

It's true what they say; you may forget the words someone said to you, but you'll never forget how they made you feel. Regarding the lowlife luggage guy, I hope he got his. If you know what I mean.

If a tornado hit Kansas City and completely wiped that place out, it couldn't come soon enough.

The one complaint that I have is that they waste my valuable time waiting in line to be inspected.  I have special status to where I am not to be detained or searched.  This is the only airport that i frequent that I have this problem.  Perhaps the TSA personnel should have better training to avoid these unnecessary delays.

Ohh, this airport (mainly just the Delta terminal). Let me count the ways. Outsourced security guards. Most food/beverage vendors are outside the terminal. The way security is set up so your mobility is limited to 5-6 gates. Rude shuttle drivers, and a long ride between the terminal and rental car facility.

I flew out of here yesterday, and the person in front of me was GIVEN THE WRONG BOARDING PASS (to be fair, that's a criticism of Delta, not the airport). And as the lady next to me in the bathroom put it, "On top of everything else, it's filthy in here."

So glad this isn't my home airport!

Hard to get too excited about KCI. It's a solid airport and decently reliable, but not much to do if you're trapped on a layover.

Since the security is spread out rather than centralized, it's hit or miss whether the security line for your flight moves quickly (usually the case but not always). The major drawback for me is that once inside security, you're trapped with very few options for food/browsing shops. That said, I try to minimize my time spent in airports, so this is generally less of an issue. Visitors to KC are better off renting a car when coming to than taxiing from the airport since it's a ways out.

My only immaterial gripe is that we need the powers-at-be to change the airport code from "MCI" to "KCI" (better use of time than monitoring high schoolers' twitter streams, eh?).

Overall, KCI is solid and I'm thankful for the free wi-fi!

Easy and quick airport to navigate.

I wish the Starbucks was available past security in the Southwest Terminal.  I got a lousy almost $3 coffee in the terminal.  Otherwise, not a bad airport at all.

When I lived there I thought KCI was the shizzle.  You could roll up and (if you parked in the garage) be at your gate in less than 30min.  It was really handy.

Visiting after moving to Atlanta changed my perspective.  They consolidated the security lines so now it can be a wait and because almost NOTHING is behind security you really get annoyed with being gouged for an overpriced bottle of water at the pathetic cold food stand they put in there.

Free Wifi is kind of nice, if usually unusable.

Wow!  I don't know about Terminals B or C, but Terminal A, which houses United and American Airlines, is barbaric.  None of the outlets work, so you can't plug in any of your electronic devices, and there are only a handful of mediocre shops and snackbars.  Pathetic.  Yet another reason not to fly United, I guess.

I have been flying in and out of this airport since before I was born. Literally.

    Mostly only Frontier and Southwest.
Everything here is SO SIMPLE. No wait, no hassle, no drama. It's a pretty small airport, so you'd hope for those things.

Pull up, curb check, tip $2, head to grab a magazine or two and some candy, and then to my gate. It has never taken me more than 5min to get through security here, seeing as though each bundle of gates has their own security setup and lines. Good thinking KC!

Cant say much for the food court, never eaten there. But I do like the Quiznos express in the gate area. Quick and yummy.

Despite what another reviewer said, yes there are many public outlets for people to use. They are on the silver booths with the little stools? They even have rows of bigger comfy leather chairs with power outlets and USB plugs.

The baggage claim is always an easy deal since there are only two rounds! lol

Smallest airport we go to (we usually only go direct, no puddle jumps).
Good small:  walk off the plane & right to baggage claim.
Bad small:  gate 50 no bathrooms after security.  What is this, Russia?  (Lack of facilities & TP is routine).  No priority security line, no place to work, no club, no food or drink.

Shuttle bus to Car Rental Center to/ from seems to always be packed, even 1st-flight-out.

I love to travel and this is my home airport so I frequent it quite a bit.

Pros: Parking is cheap. It's $6/day and the shuttle bus takes you right to the gate.  Security is easy to get in and out of because there are 2 security lines for every 5-6 gates.  There's free wi-fi!  This is a big plus and I don't find it at too many airports.

Cons:  All the good stuff is before you get through security!  Food, magazines, drinks.  They now put a quiznos and small snack stand after security, but when my flight is delayed and I want to get something to eat, I don't feel like leaving and going through security again.  Also, I think baggage claim can be very slow.

(1.75 stars)  As mid-sized airports go, KC International is definitely quirky.  Getting to the airport isn't hard, and the general layout is decent.  The car rental experience is, however, needlessly complicated; a distant rental facility and slow shuttle buses fail to impress.  Gates are arranged into clusters, each with its own security and baggage claim; each is streamlined, fast and easy.  The security is private (not TSA) and genuinely seem to be constructive and helpful, rather than just another inept government function.  Passing through security before you've eaten is a huge (and counter-intuitive) mistake, your choices are very limited and overpriced once you've cleared security.  On the other hand, security is so easy that exiting and reentering is an option.  Waiting areas are undersized and poorly arranged, but do serve their intended purpose.  My observation is that MCI has more delays and canceled flights than its geography would dictate, but this may be just a combination of Midwestern weather and delays at the destination airport.  There is a shuttle bus between terminals, but they are close enough to walk and this is often the faster option.  One final quirk: airport personnel are uncommonly receptive to opportunities to assist, but not always correct in their advice.

Seriously people this is an airport, if you want to shop and dine in Kansas City I recommend the Country Club Plaza. Anybody who flies frequently appreciates the MCI airport, people who don't think it is the worst. I love it cause the security line is about five people long at its longest and you walk off your plane and the baggage claim is right there unlike some airports (people who fly Delta at MSP know the seemingly endless walk I am referring to). People complain that there isn't anything to do after security... Well there really is not, except for a stand that sells cold food and drinks. If it is really such an issue don't go through security till 20 minutes before your flight leaves. There are a couple restaurants outside of security. This is my favorite airport that I have flown to because of ease.

Security is an issue here and there is really nothing they can do to improve until they build a new airport! The rental cars are located in median of the pick up area so be careful crossing over to the pick up point.

Baggage claim is pretty fast compared to most airports. All in all it's an outdated airport trying to keep up with the new needs of security. So make sure you eat and get coffee before you go through TSA because your in traveler hell once you cross over!

I like KCI or MCI which are it's actual call letters. I have flown all over the world and this is my home airport.

It is little and easy to get in and out of. It is far enough outside the city you don't have to hear all the air traffic and you can get direct flights to a lot of locations. You do have a bit of a drive to get there from JoCo about 30 mins. Give yourself extra time in the winter because of ice and snow.

The fact that it is small and you can drive right up to one of the three terminals and drop the person off or pick them up is great. If you have to park the first 15 mins are free which is nice, most airports charge no matter how long you are in there.

There are a few fast food places inside the terminals. BK, Starbucks and Chili's. A place to buy gum and a read.

Security is pretty quick so you really don't have to get there an hour early but we usually do, I have missed to many flights to risk it.

The only down side, which really all airports have is once you are through security they can charge whatever they want for a drink or food. We usually bring food in with us and buy a drink on the security side.

The restrooms are clean and baggage claim is a breeze.

It is not as hectic as LAX, JFK, BWI, ORD, DIA, CDG (France), OKA (Japan), etc. It is just a nice little in and out airport. No frills just brass tacks and that is fine by me.

Free WiFi is a big plus love that.

I travel frequently, and have experienced the great and the not so great.  The Delta terminal at KCI leaves a LOT to be desired.

    Pros:  Short security lines

    Cons:
    - No electrical outlets for public use
    - No decent food options inside or outside the secured area
    - Very awkward seating area near gate 60

My flight was recently delayed, so I walked around a bit, and was sorely disappointed not to find ANY Kansas City barbecue being offered at the terminal.  Perhaps if I went to a different terminal it would be different, but not while shlepping my bags.

One bathroom with two toilets in the Southwest terminal once through security? Industrial "food" and coffee. The blare of loud TVs every thirty feet. I fly through a lot of airports and for a city the size of KC this one is shocking!  Freaking unbelievable that once you go through security you only choice of coffee is the kind you get from a thermos with one of those buttons you push on top to dispense. That and a couple pre-made sandwiches in a cooler. This food kiosk setup may have worked 30 years ago but how about a restaurant or two?  Maybe a Starbucks?  Has union control written all over it!

Oh and once you go through security at your gate you are STUCK!  Don't try going back out to the one restaurant in the terminal area...else you will have to do the security drill a second time...unless you enjoy the full body cavity search!

C'mon Kansas City!  This is my second trip to your city and I really like it...but please invest a lil money in an airport worth of your nice city...maybe something recognizable by those of us living in the 21st century!?!

One of favorite airports because it's small, security is so close to the gates, and it's a short walk to ground transportation.

Unfortunately, some of the better restaurants have closed through the years, but there's always something to grab for a quick bite.

Best place for traveling though when in a hurry and running through the airport.

The reason why I decided to write a review for this airport is because it is pretty different from most other airports I've visited.  Now, I am in no way an airport connoisseur, but I've been to several throughout the country and abroad.  This airport is very different in that each terminal is separate from each other.  Once you enter the building, you are at the gate.  Get in line, go through security, then you're stuck there with nothing much to do except sit and wait to board your flight.  There are a few kiosks scattered within the gate waiting area, but it isn't an airport that I would be comfortable waiting for long periods of time.

I travel almost weekly for work.  I moved here a couple of months ago from Boston and KCI is one of my favorite things so far!  It is so easy to get in and out of, garage parking is cheap, I never am more than a few spaces from the elevator, and there are never lines.  It makes me not even miss the First Class security lines because you don't need them.  And the best part????  Baggage Claim is quick.

On the downside?  The food.  In Terminal C there is not any good food.  If I arrive early I can't eat.  I go straight to the Admiral's Club because there is nothing else to do and the Admiral's Club employees are great!

My first experience with MCI was my first time navigating an airport and getting on a plane alone. Riddled with self conscious worry, I entered the airport clutching my ticket confirmation and totally anticipating something to go wrong. Luckily, it was just me being me; I made it home to Texas with all my luggage and a very positive opinion of MCI.

I always fly Southwest, and the employees working check-in are always wonderfully helpful and welcoming. If you're having trouble printing your boarding pass, they won't hesitate to help.

I'm always surprised at MCI's security; the longest it took me to get through was about 10 minutes, and it was my fault. I'm an art student at KCAI and had forgotten to unpack an x-acto knife at the bottom of my backpack from a project I had been working on. I explained it to the TSA agents and they were very understanding (they actually found it kind of funny). They had me unscrew the blade so they could dispose of it, and I was free to continue to the gate. Needless to say, I now triple check my carry-ons, and since then I always get through in five minutes. Never have I felt like a criminal, even with the new x-ray machines.

It's not the prettiest airport in the world, but compared to Love Field in Dallas (not to be confused with DFW Airport), my time spent at the gate is a lot more comfortable. If you missed a meal, make sure to eat and buy your Kansas City t-shirt before going through security; they have sandwich kiosks in the gate, but no full fledged restaurants or shops. There may not be much to see, but there's free wifi! At least I can check my email or skype with friend until it's time to board. If you need to charge your laptop or cell phone, there are plenty of comfy arm chairs with outlets and usb ports in them.

If you've flown out in more sophisticated airports, you probably won't be impressed with MCI's aesthetics. However, it's easy to navigate, you can get through security painlessly, and the staff (at least everyone I've encountered) is friendly and accommodating. Can't beat that.

This airport has a weird setup.  There is a security line available for about every 10 gates which means its a breeze to get through security.

The downside is that once you go through security, there is nothing past the gates. There are a few carts selling things but I recommend staying on the outer terminal and just going in once you're done with your drink and meal.

One plus is they have lots of electrical outlets to plug in.  Also, free wi-fi is available.

As other reviews have said, easy to get in and out of but that is pretty much where it stops.  The rest of it....  not so good.  Once you check in your are stuck at your gate if you leave your gate you are back outside and must go through security again.  At your gate you have very few options for any kind of a beverage.  And if you do happen to find something you want, you must endure the friendly staff to assist you with your purchase, NOT, and then pay 2.50 for a Sprite.

There are no options outside of the gate either.  I say that because I tried the food outside of my gate and it was lousy...  (The one restaurant I was able to find)  I was told there is another one somewhere.

One would think with a city the size of Kansas City, the airport would have evolved beyond the 20th century... but it hasn't.  There really isn't anything memorable about this airport.  This is what I would expect if I was in Russia or some other part of the world, but not in the US.

Free WiFi though... kind of surprising really, perhaps they could charge for WiFi and remodel the airport!!!!  Just sayin...

Kansas City International has been my hometown airport my entire life.  In the 1970s, KCI functioned as a hub for TWA, but since then KCI has just served as a regional airport -- a place from where travelers depart or to where they arrive, but not a place where anyone ever stops over.

This has good and bad elements.  For the good, KCI is an airport where you can arrive 30-45 minutes before your flight and have no problems making it into the terminal, through security, and aboard your flight.  (Not recommended that you do this if you have an important flight to catch, but this has been my experience over several flights).  In this sense, KCI is almost like a bus station -- you show up when you need to depart and then go; when you come back, you can be at your car in 5-10 minutes and leave.  This is what the promise was of air travel years ago -- being able to jet off around the country and around the world at a moment's notice with none of the lines, intense and time-wasting security, and innumerable waits of a larger super-airport.

Each of the terminals is shaped like a capital "C", and features parking in the interior of the letter in a garage.  Garage parking is a little-pricey comparatively, with costs by the hour, or $20 per day.  But the major advantage to parking in garage is that you can leave your car and be at your gate in 150 yards.  The same is true for returning -- you can be off the plane and in your car in 5 minutes.  Economy parking is also a great deal at around $7 per day, but with a short bus-ride to and from the economy lot.  In my experience with the Economy buses, the wait and the ride will add approximately 15-20 minutes to your over all embarkation or departure time.

Finally, KCI is a fine airport if you have a person picking you up or dropping you off -- not only are the garage spaces very close, but the curbside pick up and drop off is even closer.  Because of the narrowness of the building, you can literally be closer to the plane at a curb-space than you are to cars in the parking lot just yards away.

The Bad: KCI is remote.  I'm not exactly sure what the plan was when KCI was built, but the rest of Kansas City is rather distant from the airport -- it's not a close car or cab ride from anywhere within the city limits.  Also, in line with the "bus station" nature of the airport, there is virtually nothing to do if you have to wait for a flight.  Each terminal has a couple of small places to get a bite to eat or to get a drink or to pick up a newspaper, but there is virtually no other way to occupy yourself.

The terminals are also not connected.  This probably isn't much of an issue as I suspect it is rare for a person to change flights at KCI, but the only way from one terminal to another is intra-terminal buses.

Four stars because I live here and don't ever have to spend time here on a layover.

This is a unique airport in its design. I'm sure it was cutting edge before electricity. Or hair. Or sliced bread.

    The positives:

    1) The terminals are small.
    2) It takes no time to get to your gate because (see #1.)
    3) There is free WiFi and numerous USB and power outlets in the gate areas.
    4) It's easy to get to baggage claim and claim your baggage because (see #1.)
    5) You can be from your car to your gate in 20 minutes, or vice versa because (see #1.)
    6) You can get good airfare rates thanks to Southwest.

    The negatives:

    A) There is not much to see or do because (see #1.)
    B) Once you go through security, there is not much to offer but (see #3.)
    C) The terminals are in Kansas City, and not someplace awesome like Hawaii.

As you can see, the positives CLEARLY outnumber the negatives, so there. That's it. Take it for what it is. Bon Voyage!

It's an airport.  In Kansas City.  On the plus side is the pre-9/11 design.  On the down side is the pre-9/11 design.  There is nothing like a central security screening but instead passengers are screened for small groupings of gates.  This means the lines might be short and quick.  It also means your stuck at your gate or need to be re-screened.  So, transferring here could be a pain as you'll almost certainly have to go through security as you change gates.

Food service seems to be a monopoly too - one company operating a few restaurants serving the same limited menu.

Still, my plane landed and my plane took off.  Count your blessings.

This is kind of a schizoid airport. The security area is the best I've seen in a while. It actually looks like someone put thought into the idea that security screening is here to stay, and set it up for efficiency for both passengers and screeners. Whomever you are; I hope you gotna bonus out of it.
Clearly, the same person didn't design the rest of the airport. Deplaning passengers walk off the jetway into all the people huddled up to get on the plane. The gates (at least for Frontier) were cramped.
The airport in general was clean, though. Eat first, as there isn't much to choose from once you get through security.

    Quick. Simple. Painless.

These are word that should be associated with airports, but unfortunately, this is rare. This airport is not too huge to navigate through, and makes everything every clear and easy to read. It doesn't make your head hurt to fly in and out of here.

I would recommend it! It's a nice place and decorated very neatly, as well.

This airport can eat my ass.

Seriously, the little 'security bubbles' are a titanic pain in the ass. They've tried to make it more bearable with a little Quiznos cart and a few bathrooms inside of  security... but seriously?? Build a new airport and raze the old one. And when you do, kick HMS out and contract some food places with decent vendors. Can a brother get some steak on a layover... this is Kansas City, yo.

Granted, the security bubbles make for occasionaly shorter lines at the gates... but really, it's not worth it.

This is the weirdest airport I've ever been to. It's a small airport, which is pretty decent for the area, however, once you're through security you're stuck at the gate waiting area.  No meandering through the random airport shops picking up candy or magazines, you're stuck and bored.

When you walk in, the check in kiosks are right there, pretty convenient. Then, instead of handing your luggage to the ticket agents you walk it over to another line, I think, to go through check in security.  After you get through the long line of TSA screening you get to the waiting area.  Which is kinda small compared to other airports.  There's a mini food place as you walk in, but there's no other stores here.  There's a security guard at a door that leads out to the shops, but, you can't go through it.  Which is very junk.  I'm not sure I'll be coming to this airport again soon, but it was interesting to experience.

I do hope they can make a shop inside the waiting area for passengers that would be a great improvement on their part =)

What idiot came up with the security here?!?! Once you enter the gate you are trapped! Don't go into security until about 45 mins before your flight.
Food is good enough - the Boulevard brewery isn't bad.
I've never parked here, so can't comment on that.
I always try to avoid off site rental facilities, but this airport has a shuttle and everything is off site. However, the building is amazingly clean and there are rarely lines.
Biggest downside is its actually about 30 mins outside of downtown KC.
