Kansai Restaurant - CLOSED
7 reviews for Kansai Restaurant
This is another haunt frequented by my parents and their social circle, that I came to know about when I moved home from college. Decent food, but what I like is the fact that they make people feel like regulars after only a few visits.
Food is good, decent prices and the owner is often there to serve/ make sure all is being handled well.
Whatever I order is always great, and often the chefs will come out to watch our Japanese friend who eats like a horse consume whatever it is he ordered.
KANSAI has the one of the great Lunch Special.
It's very Authentic Japanese.
I am tired of Pseudo-Japanese.
Especially that Cheap Fake Bento Box with
Over Sweet Salmon Teriyaki,
Too dry Tonkatsu,
Smelly Oily Chicken-Katsu,
Cheep Old Sashimis,
Instant Miso soup,
and Old re-heat rice.
YUCK!
But,
That's not happening here.
Clean,
Very organized presentation,
Great selection of ingredients.
This lunch specials are something you got to try.
I don't really know why nobody has written about this outstanding restaurant yet. A true gem in the heart of Japantown. The owner is a very nice older gentlemen who worked at the world expo in Brussels in 1958 and traveled all over Europe after that. Toshi, one of their Sushi chefs, is a fan of German literature. To top all that, at each of my evening visits, a Japanese science show was running on the TVs behind the sushi bar - now compare that to the standard nonstop news or sports channels at your average sports bar/pub. Aside from super fresh and tasty sushi, try the salmon katsu and their delicious miso soup. And make sure to call to check whether they are open, sometimes they host a private event in the evening.
Update 12-31-06: Their opening hours have changed. Now the restaurant is open on Sundays but closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The food's still great, the staff is still extremely friendly and knowledgeable.
hmmm went in not knowing what to expect....so we sat at the sushi bar where we started off with a chef special. Dont see it on the menu? ask for it heh heh better yet say it in japanese. Anyways though, the fish was great that night, the chef was very wonderful and had lots of knowledge in his art. Ordered some hot sake and just sat back enjoying the nice quiet atmosphere of the place. I havent sat in the back of the restuarant yet but I know that, they serve more rice dishes and so forth over there. hmmmm also, the rainbow roll here seems a bit different from the usual seen at most places. Enjoyable place alone or with company.
Nice restaurant. I really liked the salmon. Sushi was really good...
Decent sushi, I enjoyed the chef's signature use of shiso leaf throughout the dishes. Traditional sized sushi, high-quality fish.
Cute little restaurant that was recommended to me by some of the wait staff at Shabusen, so I assumed that it had to be good (there are a bunch of places around here, so if they recommend this place, I thought I'd check it out). Service was excellent, our waitress was very attentive and when we ordered our rolls she said it would take a little while because there was a large order ahead of ours, so she brought us free appetizers to hold us over until our sushi was ready (sweeet...). Mi madre ordered a beef teriyaki/sashimi combo, and the portion was perfect - just enough so you aren't stuffed after you eat all of it, and the beef was nice and tender. I wasn't really feeling the miso soup, but the fish was fresh (a bit too much rice on the rolls) but all in all a nice place to stop for dinner. I also liked how everyone who worked at the restaurant said goodbye and thank you to us as we left, not many restaurants care enough to say thank you. So... Arigato Kansai!
