Review from Laura T.
This place is good. The waiting for a table is horrible. You have to wait for your all your guest to arrive to be seated too. The hostess is not all there and kind of stuck up. The cook though was great and friendly. My boyfriend and I shared the filet and it was awesome. The fried rice though was wonderful and I could have just had that. The shrimp sauce is my favorite sauce and I love to put it on my rice. The miso soup was ok. The salad I could have done without although it was good. It's a lot food so go hungry.

I liked this place and had a lot of fun! The food was cooked infront of you, the cook was friendly and funny. He put on a show as he cooked! Had a wonderful time!

With so many sushi joints popping up around Jacksonville, especially in the Town Center and Tinseltown areas, it can be hard for people to choose a place to go. I only really ever come here for the sushi. It's always fresh when I order and we always sit at the sushi bar. I've never, ever had a problem here.
Other than that, it is your typical Japanese Steak House with the center grills. I've eaten at the table previously and it was fine, fresh and fun. A little pricey but I've yet to see this style restaurant that wasn't. -

You know those restaurants you look forward to eating at when you return home for a bit, well Kan Ki is like that for me. The food isn't mind blowing or the sushi out of this world, but it's familiar and I like the way it tastes.
Kan Ki is your typical Japanese steak house. You have the grill table where the stereo typical asian cook does all his fancy cooking tricks like flip shrimp in his hat, or make a fire volcano out of some onions. It's a lot of flair and people who have never seen it before generally get a kick out of it, but after you've seen it once you really don't care for it.
Being that I've come here several times I tend to go for the regular table. Now the waitresses dress up in kimonos which is I guess is suppose to add to the overall experience, but it really doesn't do anything for me. Most of the time they are pretty good, occasionally their English is spotty in which case I just point at things.
I'm a big fan of the chicken teriyaki with fried rice. The sushi is pretty average in that the size, price, and quality. If I'm just getting sushi I usually get about three rolls, they range from like 4.50-11 dollars per 6 rolls.
A big plus of this place is it is fairly central to a lot of different areas of jax, be in the beaches, san jose, mandarin, etc. It's also right near the movie theater so frequently I find myself here either before or after I catch a flick. Good for jville standards but nothing special if you're from a real city. -

Just came back from this restaurant and the food was fabulous. The entertainment value for the cost definitely exceeds it. It's not the best in the world but the chefs are friendly and funny (borderline bathroom jokes though). My filet was just awesome...melted in my mouth. Good fried rice and veggies. I was actually impressed with the miso soup. Many Japanese restaurants cheat and don't use the proper soup base but they did! They do not offer "Sake Bomb" if you're in a mood for one...FYI.
They have susi, regular restaurant seating or at the grill (Teppanyaki), or bar, great variety of foods for everyone. They did not offer any desserts but am pretty sure they have some... -

I'm still not sure on how I feel about this place. I liked the ambiance and the service, but the food was just average - nothing I can write home about.
The teppanyaki though is better than Benihana's and Wabi Sabi's, I must say. The chicken and lobster were cooked just right.
I tried the sushi and it was alright. I couldn't say that it's the freshest.
The chef's cooking tricks wasn't so special. Nothing I haven't seen another chef do before. -

I used to go here quite often for lunch.
They have the teppanyaki/hibachi steak lunch specials which I really enjoyed.
The sushi is not bad as well.
Service is good and wait staff is friendly.
I don't usually sit by the grill as I don't like smelling like lunch when I get back to work. -

This place was so bad that I'm currently writing a bad service post about this place elsewhere as well.
The sushi is small and expensive. They price their rolls for big, eight piece rolls, but they come out as small, six piece rolls.
Bland too, the fish is definitely not fresh.
I can say I'm spoiled by my local restaurants ( I'm not from Jax, was visiting ) but I was pretty appalled by this place.
We ordered the tofu hibachi and got a few slivers of tofu. Like, four pieces that may have come to 2oz. It was absolutely pathetic considering tofu is cheaper than meat.
On top of that, the chef threw the tofu on with the meat. Now, I eat tofu because I have problems eating meat, not because I'm a vegetarian, so, not the biggest deal, but still, wtf?
Even after telling the chef I cannot eat meat, he thought he would be so kind to toss some steak onto my plate, which I had to reiterate. So, he took his thongs and pulled the meat off my plate, and instead of just discarding the meat and tossing the thongs off my plate that I had been eating off of, he gave it to the person next to me, who was thankfully my girlfriend.
Still. What the heck?
The price was ridiculous. Especially for the stingy portions. I'd really hate to see their small sizes.
The rice was also hard. I don't know what's so hard about using a rice cooker. Someone obviously didn't put enough water in the rice, it was hard and didn't stick together, as Japanese rice is supposed to. I think that the 'fried rice,' may have been long grain, which is completely inauthentic.
For someone looking for something that resembles Japanese cuisine, and actually want to be filled up without breaking the bank, you may want to go elsewhere. -

The sushi is very fresh! I don't like teppanyaki (the group dining), but I will come here for sushi. They also have a spicy crab salad served atop mussels that is awesome!! This was one of the first really good sushi options in Tinseltown.

The sushi is good. the best so far that I've found in JAX . only bad thing is it smells kinda fishy when u walk in. but that hasn't stopped us from going twice. I think next time we will try the habachi tables.

This is our overall favorite Japanese steak house. Everything is good every time we have ever went. Have never had a bad experience here. We just wish we still lived in Jacksonville so that we could still eat there more often. Every time we come back to town we make sure we set aside a night to go back and enjoy.

Kanki was lovely. Everything was quite fresh, flavorful, and in general wonderful. I was very impressed by their attention to detail and how spotless the entire place was. The food was adequately priced. I would absolutely go back again.

This review is only about the sushi bar since we did not eat in the steak house. Maybe we were expecting too much since we just moved here from San Diego, but the sushi was not good. The rolls were small and expensive. The tamago (Japanese omelet) was mushy, salty and bland, not lightly springy and sweet as it is supposed to be. The wasabi was so bland that we couldn't even taste it. We tried to order some Udon to go with the sushi, but the waitress told us they do not serve noodles of any type. The sushi portions were small and expensive, and not very tasty. I guess our search for decent sushi in JAX will continue. On a lark, the wife and I tried the sushi rolls at the Super Walmart, and they were better than Kanki! If you want good sushi, go somewhere else.

I may be biased, when writing this I had just eaten here. It's your typical run-of-the mill Japanese restaurant. It's priced about the same, maybe a pinch higher (average meal is probably about 20-40 after tip depending on what you get), tastes about the same, but excels in that it's one of the cleanest Japanese restaurants I've been in. This is probably due to the fact that its one of the newer ones around, but it's nice nevertheless. The nearest competitor to it would be Mikado near the Avenues in terms of atmosphere. Kan-Ki serves as my girlfriend's and my Japanese restaurant of choice, in part due to its proximity to us and also because of the quality of the food. For the record, after tip, she and I get out for $45, but we do not get alcohol or combination meals. Highly recommended if you're in the Tinseltown area.

Nice and clean place. Variety of traditional Japanese sushis and meals make it a great dining destination for people living in the area. I've been there 3 times and I've always done the teppanyaki which is lots of fun especially with bigger group (even if it's only the two of you you can still wait and they'll put you together with some other people for the group dining ... if that's for you). Cooks are well versed in their trade and pleasant to talk to. If you like Japanese and you haven't tried Kan-Ki yet you should.
