8 reviews for Kaneohe Bay Sandbar
We have been to Hawaii a dozen times but this was only our second visit to Oahu. So we bought the little blue book to help us find some cool spots around the island.
I read about the Sandbar which they called the "Sunken Island and Disappearing Beach"... that sounds so much more exotic. ... hell, we have a Sandbar in Lake Havasu.
The book recommends renting a kayak and kayaking to the Sandbar so we decided to give it a try.
We rented from Kailua Sailboards and Kayaks which is not too far away. http://www.yelp.com/bi...
Most people renting there stay at the beach there. We decided to break away from the tourists.
So we got our kayak in the water at the marina and just started paddling out. You can NOT see the sandbar from the marina.... you just have to trust it's out there.
Definitely got a work out on our arms but after awhile you start to approach the Sandbar aka Sunken Island and it is AMAZING! Really magical just like the book says!
AWESOME.
We were not there at low tide so the water was still a couple feet deep.
We got out and floated around in the crystal clear waters. It was unreal!
We went out there on a weekday and there wasn't many people around anywhere. We only saw 2 other kayaks.
DEFINITELY worth the trip if you want to relax on white sand and the most awesome water. Bring lunch and drinks in a small icechest like we did, and stay for the afternoon!
Looking at the pictures, it looks like the weekends are much busier and probably a whole different experience.
This haole will definitely go back next time we are here!

5 stars baby!
I LOOOOOOOOOOOOVE the SANDBAR!!!!! I would give 100 stars if I could! (^_^) ahhh.
This is the #1 place I miss in Hawaii!
I had so many great Saturday and Sundays here in 2008 with friends dancing on the Aquadelica! From day till night, I have tons of memories, that makes me miss living in Hawaii.
Tons of girls+ guys+ dogs + boats + food + music + amazing view = SANDBAR in Kaneohe of course!
From jet sking, wak boarding, tanning on the boat, bbq on the boat and stand up paddle boarding... dancing on the boat and hanging out with friends... ahhhh good times!!! (^_^)
If you have a boat and haven't been... you must check this hot spot out! If you're visiting Hawaii... find a way to get out there and hang out for a day and enjoy paradise!
Check out my photos! Tons of good times in 2008!
I MISS U SANDBAR!

If you have a friend or a friend of a friend, then check out the sandbar. If you grew up in Kaneohe, then you have gone to the sandbar. Good place to chill, have a couple of beers and check out the military guys get sunburnt. It's a sandbar in the middle of Kaneohe Bay that is just there. You could kayak from shore but why if you have a boat.
Beware of Game Wardens that come around and check your coolers. Not supposed to consume out there but if you 're not loud and show respect, then you'll be okay.

Absolutely a must-do if you like to experience places as if you lived there. If I lived here youd find me at the Sandbar often. Probably not in the mix of the weekend crowd but......I'd definitely be here. It's a huge spot of barely submerged sand where, if you desire, you can paddle out past the exposed part and have your own piece of sandy real-estate in maybe knee high water. Besides, you'll most likely only see a "crowd" here when a mid-day low-tide coincides with the weekend. Otherwise, you'll probably have the place virtually to yourself.

I've added pictures ... This is another Hawaiian experience, and a lot of people don't get to experience it. I think the photos will speak for themselves ...
In the past I've taken 6-10 person "pontoon" boats from the Marine Corps Base marina out to the sandbar, which is literally a "bar" of sand that is exposed when the tide goes down, and where people take boats out and anchor, set up grills, volleyball nets, etc., with the backdrop of the Koolau mountain ranges, and Kaneohe Bay ("K-Bay"). Perfect way to relax on a free day ...

In reply to Anita L above, Hawaii has a pretty good recycling programme. There are many recycling centers on each island. You may have seen a bunch of blue and green bins, along with black bins outside each house as you were driving around, that's for green waste, bottles/cans, and trash respectively. I live on Kaneohe Bay and haven't seen any floating trash.

We've been fortunate enough to have friends who live right on Kaneohe Bay. This means that whenever we've visited, we've woken up to the glorious waterfront view. Mornings mean a cup of joe at the end of the pier in my friend's backyard, or better yet, fishing in the afternoons. Currently, we're staying with them again until we find a place of our own. However, I've noticed this time that the residents of Kaneohe are using the Bay for so much more than just their viewing and entertaining pleasure. They are also using it as a garbage dump/recycling pit. Residents will dump anything biodegradeable in terms of food items -- shrimp shells, vegetable ends, steamed rice, whatever will go into the garbage which is food-related, back into the Bay. "The fish will eat it" I've been told, or "it comes from the sea anyways". O-K!!! The steamed rice I can see as there's nothing in it but rice. I can even see how throwing ends of vegetables or shavings from carrots etc are okay. But some stir fried veggies which I've used garlic, oil and a touch of oyster sauce to put together? That's okay too because "it's what we eat right?" THAT is something I've gotta get used to. Isn't it amazing that there is no recycling in the state of Hawaii? I'm so used to recycling that it feels so weird (and often, I feel extremely guilty) for putting cans and other recycleables into the trash. I guess if I'm convinced by marine biologists that it's safe to 'recycle' in the Bay, I might start doing it too. Kaneohe Bay -- not sure if you deserve a one star or 5, but I'm giving 5 for everything you've had to put up with.
