Sushi here is wonderful & the prices are cheap. I'm a fan of the french salmon, french tuna and tuna poki. Oh, try a Melissa roll, it's not on the menu but they still will make if for you.
The restaurant (unlike Yama) is tiny, tiny, but they do take reservations.
The only weird thing about Kampai is their servers seem a little strange & they need to pull their hair back.
I have ate at other places in town but this place is the best. It a small place, but the food are great. tuna poki is the best. spider roll is crazy good. spicy tuna hand roll with sea vegetable is to die for. this is a sick house. the prices are so cheap. this guy make their own sauces. . I don't believe in using manufacturing sauce as special sauce. people who know sushi eat here.
a small little restaurant which fills up really quickly. we arrived just when they opened at 5pm, and by the time we'd left they were full!
wasn't mind-blowing japanese food (but then again i'm from SE Asia where good food abounds), but the sukiyaki was pretty good. wouldn't particularly recommend the beef teriyaki but the rolls weren't half bad. the alligator roll was made of smoked salmon (which really should be fresh salmon), and the salmon skin should really have been deep fried.
have definitely tasted better sushi/jap food in san francisco, but i suppose this is as good as it gets in Redding :)
ps. they're closed sundays and mondays, and operate like between 5-8.30pm on other days. do these guys work at all??!!!
We arrived at closing -- 8:30 PM FYI. The service was fast and we got all our food and the bill at once.
We got the sashimi plate, shrimp tempura, philidelphia roll, kama, salmon skin handroll, tofu salad and 1/2 udon. Yes, a ton of food and we did come hungry. We ate as fast as we could as the staff wanted to leave and kept checking on the bill ("can I take that?")
Oy, what a tummy ache! Can't say the food was bad, it was good and quality for a good price. I might try it again if in town, but unfortunately we did not have a great experience.
As recommended - call before you stop by. And if tis closing time try take out.
I've been coming here for close to 15 years! Whenever I come home to visit, I make sure to go to Kampai!
Best Sushi in a 150 mi radius
I'm far from a sushi snob, but I do eat it quite a bit so I've got pretty set ideas about what I like. I'm not a fan of sauces, I like for my fish to be very fresh, and I prefer sashimi to rolls.
Kampai does a great job with their rolls, but their fish is always fresh and well prepared enough that it can stand alone.
The staff has always been extremely friendly and service is prompt.
When I was in high school I'd come in just about once a week and I don't think I ever had a negative thing to say about them.
The best sushi that Redding has to offer. Kampai has been in business forever, and their food is awesome. Husband and wife team, making consistently good, fresh food. Also the service is top-notch... Randy and his wife are really friendly and the waitresses have a tendency to stay on for years, ensuring that pretty much everyone knows you, even if you (like me, living so far away) can only manage to get here a couple times a year
This is the place that started my love for sushi, and it's still on my list of "must go to" restaurants when I visit family in Redding. Especially good (though not very authentic) are their chicken rolls, but they've got killer udon and unagi too. They also serve Ramune and UCC canned coffee, for those hot redding days where hot tea just would be cruel.
Ok so my experience here was quite awkward. I sat at the sushi bar which looked like a make shift counter that I'd find in one of my buddy's basements. The chef didn't bother to say hi nor make eye contact with me, and then I was handed a menu which the lady then disappeared. This place is tiny and most of the tables were full, so I guess they must have been busy. I think I sat there for at least 10 mins waiting to order, and finally I asked for a sheet to fill out what I wanted. I was told they don't do that here, and I had to order everything at once. Long story short, the sushi here is ok and appears to be fresh; but don't expect much. I had some scallop roll, the tuna, yellow tail, french halibut, and Goya, The bill came to $31 including a 20% tip which I'm not so sure why I was so generous. I probably won't ever go back.
Very cute, good service and decent food. One of the best Japanese places in town. The hours can be weird, though, so It's best to call ahead.
Best Sushi in Town!
Order a Dragon Roll and a Rainbow Roll, even if they're not on the menu. Kampai makes the best sushi. Everything's fresh and the chef is excellent. This bar compares to sushi in Japan Town in San Fran. The only downfall, their lame hours.
I really like this place. Its really quaint. The sushi is good and its fresh! I love going to lunch here!!
The best Redding sushi restaurant may sound like faint praise, but Kampai has been stellar for years. One of my favorite sushi places in CA, or the country for that matter. The soft shell crab roll is served with a light rice vinegar/ soy sauce, and when eaten warm, melts in your mouth. By far our favorite, for years, has been gekkecara(?) hand rolls (temaki). The gekkecara on the menu is the maki, also wonderful, but can't compare to the creamy bliss that is the hand roll. Gekkecara roughly means 'very hot', but this in not so hot, but rather has a bit of a bite to compliment the sweetness of the fish & sauce (not sugary sweet.) Everything is wonderful, and over the years we've probably had it all. The quality and consistency has always been fantastic. Highly recommended. and probably the main reason we still go to Redding. After 10 years of living in the East Bay, still better than the sushi we've found in the Bay Area, and we earnestly try to find good sushi here.
