One of our friends suggested us Kamameshi though she was really hesitant. She said that the service sucks. We wondered how bad can it be.
So here comes the day when we decide to try it out. Food is good and reasonably priced. On weekends there is always a long wait.
Lets talk about the service. The service is hilarious. After we were done eating and almost ready to leave a lady brings us veg tempura claiming that it is ours. We told her that we were done eating. As we are walking towards the parking lot a lady came running towards us saying that we had forgotten our credit card. We told her it is not ours. What can you do but laugh.
We went there couple of times again. Service is really bad. I was forced to think what were they doing wrong. After observing I noticed that they do not have a dedicated waitress for each table anyone does anything which causes all the chaos.
The bento boxes are the way to go. I learned my lesson this time around and had the salmon teri with mixed tempura. The salad dressing was tasty! Whenever I see a pale orange dressing, I never have complaints about it, Kamameshi included.
Salmon teri was moist, and the salmon flavor wasn't overpowered with drowning amount of teriyaki sauce. But most of all I was very satisfied with the tempura - probably 8-10 pieces of shrimp, broccoli (my fave), eggplant, squash, and other veggies. And it had a great crispy batter.
I did give in to sushi and ordered a spicy tuna roll. Too much mayo and not enough spice. Yup, bento box it is!
Service was also better this time around. We were in and out of there in 45 minutes!

Probably not the most authentic Japanese restaurant (most of the workers are Filipino and I think… Read more »
I enjoy this place from time to time. their veggie udon was great. I love that the veggies were still crispy and the soup wasnt too salty! Their Hawaiian roll was good as well, I love the mango ontop.
The last time we went, around 9pm..i know theyre trying to close up and go home but sheeesh the service wasnt the best, no one refilled our drinks, we couldnt flag half of the staff down..mostly because half of them had gloves on from dealing with the garbage..then, all of the sudden...we start smelling something of bleach or pinesol...wth? it was sooooooo strong, and werent even finished. Thats a little rude i think.
so its decent overall, just dont go at night..
I ordered the Chicken Teriyaki and Agetofu.. this place looks really cute and I love the prices! I love it.
A definitely again!
Alright, I already gave this place 1 star, but I'm also going to be as nice as I can.
Coming from the Sunset where majority of Japanese restaurants are run by Chinese people., I should have figured what the hell I was getting into when I come to Westborough for Japanese food. I saw this place a few months ago when I tried out Pho Saigon (which isn't bad at all I must add). Looking in the window, it looks like your average run-of-the-mill Japanese restaurant with the plastic representations of food and such, even if they're all generic from a single parent company. They had little things I've never seen before so I noted that I'd be something to try.
So walking in, the entire staff was Filipino. Nothing wrong with that at all, like I said earlier, in the Sunset, Japanese restaurants are full of Chinese workers. But nonetheless, we were seated and the ambiance was like your typical old-fashioned-trying-too-hard-to-look-like-a-resta urant-in-Japantown.
Service was really slow, it took forever for the waitress to even come back and take our order. I noticed one thing on the menu that I've never seen before: Manila roll. Man we're in for a treat.
So I ordered the usual: Katsudon. Fried pork cutlet with egg, onions, and sauce over rice. We also got a Spider Roll, and the customary Caterpillar roll, and a single order of chicken yakitori.
Food took forever to come. There were 2 guys working at the sushi bar. All we saw them do was talk while doing their work, admittedly slowly and with distraction.
Finally, item 1 arrives. The Katsudon. It was like nothing I've ever seen before and not in a good way either. The eggs were scrambled and clumped together. And then laid over the katsu. Admittedly, the katsu was tasty, but the eggs were just....overdone, chunky and in some places, not even cooked and runny. Double U, Tee, eff? The sauce wasn't even the standard donburi sauce. It was like soy sauce mixed with water. Where were the onions, spare maybe a slice or 2. Now that I think of it, I don't think I even ate any.
Spider roll, the most decent of the meal. But if you can't get Spider roll down you might as well close down your place now. But even though it was the most decent, I gripe that it was a huge amount of rice, very little filling, and overbattered soft shell crab. The claws weren't even there, it was just the body.
Caterpillar roll was disgusting. It was covered with this pathetic excuse for unagi sauce, which was watery, salty, and very very dark. Again, probably soy sauce mixed with sugar. The unagi inside was barely visible, and I couldn't taste it at all. It too, was caked with too much rice. But what the worst thing was the avocado was BITTER. I think they used some old avocado because seriously, even with the sauce over it, you can tell that the avocado was extremely oxidized.
Yakitori was just......barbecued chicken with the same stupid dark soy sauce mixed with sugar.
Granted, I ordered all these things, and only paid $24. But I still feel ripped off. If you hate your life, and want to hate it even more, then give this place a try.
Gawd I had the hardest time remember what the name of this damn restaurant was in order to review it. Kept thinking something like Kata..Kate.....Kame....Kamameshi! GEEZ! Seriously when my friend suggested this place to "try out", I really didn't know what the heck he was talking about. Even as I pulled into the parking lot right in front of the establishment, I STILL couldn't find this place. He just kept point to it and saying "its right THERE you blind retard! In the corner!"
So I guess I'm blind. So sue me! Outside this place really did not look like much. But once inside, you realize looks can be quite deceptive. They have a very nice Japanese decor and the restaurant has very nice wooden tables and is fairly decent in size. What struck me as a little odd though was that the entire establishment was run by Filipino people. From the Filipino waitress, down to the Filipino sushi chefs. HRMMMMMMM...........................
We went on a Tuesday and it was fairly packed. Fortunately the wait was pretty reasonable and within about 10mins we were seated and staring at our respective menus. I ordered a California Roll, Rock N' Roll, and a Unagi Maki roll. My friend stuck with his usual bento box and several pieces of salmon sashimi.
His order came fairly quickly. About 10mins in he had everything he ordered. About halfway through his meal....I was still waiting on my order :/
I was just about to flag down one of the waitresses when finally..BAM...my order arrives! It was almost like they sensed a complaint! Magic! Like Sham-WOW!
Unfortunately however, presentation was severely lacking. My 3 rolls arrived all on one cutting board. Nothing fancy and beautiful looking at all like the ones some other Yelpers have posted. Oh well...as long as its good right? WRONG!
My California roll tasted very mediocre and I could barely taste any of the fish in my Rock N roll with all the rice that it mostly consisted of. And my unagi honestly tasted kinda.......funny. Even after soaking it in soy sauce and wasabi.
Overall, the rolls here were cheap. Paid about $12 for all 3 rolls. But despite the cheap eats, lackluster food and mediocre service will not be bringing me back here anytime soon.
I've gone here several times and it's always a so-so experience. The service is terrible - if you go here, expect to wait for a seat...and to order...and to get your check...I've often found myself saying "I think they forgot about us".
I wouldn't mind bad service if the food was extraordinary, but it's just ok. Not bad, but not spectacular. I usually get a bento box with beef teriyaki and California rolls. Unfortunately I find that a third of my beef is fat.
My search for a good sushi place continues.
I was here for dinner the other night for Tina's birthday. I've been here a couple times before but was never really impressed with the quality of sushi; the place looks pretty cultural but looks can be deceiving. I didn't find one Japanese person in the restaurant, just a full staff of Filipinos, Americanized Filipinos... kinda weird for me but okay, I'll buy it.
What I do like here are the prices for the bento boxes. Since I'm usually a salmon teriyaki kinda person with extra salad and no rice for around $10, I found for an extra fifty cents I can pick another item and being as hungry as I was that night, I actually left satisfied. Again not my favorite japanese spot since the only thing japanese about this place are all the filipinos in kimono's but I'd go back.
over-priced for the quality and quantity of food.
Nothing special about the sushi or variation of sushi rolls.
super duper packed on most weeknights, especially fridays and saturdays.
Best bet are the bento boxes!
Servers are super nice though! Especially the lady that works here and walgreens..too adorable and a great sense of humor!
Another Japanese restaurant near my house, Kamameshi is a regular go to place for eating my beloved Jap-cuisine.
Their serving size is pretty decent here. Their Donburis, Udon, and Soba dinners are more than filling. They actually taste good too, so I'm not complaining. I actually want one right now...
As far as sushi goes, It's fresh and tasty, but nothing noteworthy. they have your typical sushis, and a couple of unique ones as well. Overall satisfactory.
If I want japanese food and quick, I'd prolly not hesitate going to Kamameshi for some good ol Japchow any day
This place is HELLA Filipino! Filipino workers, Filipino sushi chefs, Filipino patrons, there's a "Manila" roll, and CALAMANSI JUICE!! I'm surprised they didn't have ube ice cream for dessert! LMAO! I'm not trying to "hate" on Filipinos (cause I'm also Filipino) but this is the first time I've ever seen a Filipino owned Japanese restaurant! Pretty awesome!
I ordered hamachi kama ($9.95)- not bad. They hooked me up with a big piece. Kinda wish they gave me a dipping sauce or something.
Kani Kamameshi- I've never seen this item at a Japanese restaurant before. I was curious to try it. (Taken from take-out menu) Its "steamed rice flavored w/special sauce served in authentic cookpot - please allow 25 mins." To be honest with you, it wasn't that great. It was alittle too salty. I wouldn't order it again.
and
Calamansi juice. err..."Tropical lemonade." ($1.75) - It was really good! If you're not familiar with calamansi, well, its a citrus from the Philippines. If you have any Filipino friends, go to their parents house. They should have some in their kitchen. It tasted great!
I also got to sample:
Chicken Katsu - it was surprisingly good.
Shrimp tempura - Oh. Hell. No. Frozen tempura from Trader Joe's taste better. Too much breading.
There were 7 of us. I would recomend making a reservation. Our reservation was at 7:30pm. If all of us didnt get there by 7:45pm, they told my friend they would give our table away. Everyone was on time and didn't have to wait too long.
This place gets really crowded! Before we left, I noticed a bunch of people still waiting to be seated. I thought to myself "Why are they waiting? This place isn't even that great." Then I realized "Oh wait, they're here cause the food is cheap and you get huge portions. Never mind." I also have to add service wasn't that great. But then again, service is never that great when you're with a party of 7 and all crammed into a booth.
I didnt even bother with the sushi. Btw, they have a cute interior and a cute bathroom. =D
three stars, however there is a server there that highly resembles my brother, and for that they get an extra star!! it astonishes me how nearly identical they are and i gawk at him every time i'm there. it is SO incredibly entertaining to me.
the food is pretty good. the service is never great. i dig the individual booths though!
I've been here a few times now, always getting the bento box combinations (they come with two meats, miso soup, salad, a bowl of rice and a slice of cantaloupe for dessert). Miso soup was slightly salty today but has been good in the past. Salad always has way too much dressing and I never finish it for that reason. The meat in general is tasty--although my salmon tasted slightly plain and ordinary, the beef was very tender and flavorful. A little too much fat, but that was okay. My biggest complaint is that the bento box isn't nearly enough food for me. I don't eat all that much but even I need more rice than is given...that tiny not-even-filled bowl is nowhere near enough, especially with the amount of meat provided.
I've also tried the gyoza (nothing special) and Hawaiian roll (which I enjoyed).
All in all, seems like solidly average Japanese food. Reasonably good, but nothing spectacular.
Went to Kamameshi House ready to be disappointed due to some of the previous reviews. I was expecting so-so food and terrible service. To my surprise, everything was great. The food was okay and the service was really nice.
We did get there early though, right when they opened on a Saturday so maybe that could have something to do with the level of service. Everything came in a timely manner except for some edamame beans, but we hardly noticed they weren't there until the server came by and acknowledged the delay and said he'd take it off our bill. And honestly, I didn't think they were that late because it came with our food instead of as an appetizer.
They really hook you up with the chirashi. Lots of fish and probably the most generous portion I've ever experienced.
Perhaps these guys finally read their yelp reviews and have taken them to heart. Hopefully some folks who were disappointed before will give them another chance. I know we probably will.
I'll give them 2.5-Stars for their food, they are A-OK...however, I'll give them 0.5-Stars because their service was great.
Tiger Eye was interesting. Kamameshi Kettle: Gomoku - chicken, shrimp, peas, bamboo shoots & mushrooms sound interesting on the menu. I gave it a try, because I was craving rice clay pot from that afternoon. It was piping hot, which I like, the taste was mediocre & I was hoping for a crunchy bottom, but it was burnt. Spicy Tuna was great...I don't think I've ever had a bad Spicy Tuna.

If you need cheap Japanese food then they've got it but it tastes pretty bland, budget-quality and grocery store-ish. Take out service is reasonable, sit down service is god-awful and the restaurant has an old bathroom odor. Uck
There's something comforting about sliding into one of their booths (after you've waited about 20 minutes for a table) and sitting on their cushions while you sip calamansi juice (their lemonade.)
Service is excellent. Whether you get one of the Filipino ladies or one of the young guys, they are all really friendly. They do get busy, tending to many tables at once, but if you flag them down, they'll get you what you need ASAP.
This is a no frills, no thrills kind of place, but the prices are decent and the food is consistently good. Their two item bento box is $10.95- I usually get shrimp & veg tempura & teriyaki chicken. They definitely give you a lot of food (it comes with miso, salad, and rice.) I also like their shrimp tempura udon ($5.75.) The broth is salty & a little tangy. I'm a huge fan of any place that can fill me up for about $6.
Unfortunately, this is not the place for good sushi. Sometimes it is not fresh, the avocado has turned brownish or the ebi (shrimp) is dry. I usually only comes here for their hot foods & save my sushi money for places like Takara in San Bruno or Osaka in San Francisco.
been going here this year, i believe. well many times this year, but before that i haven't pondered on kamameshi much. prices are reasonable, food is alright, i mean it's the only japanese restaurant located around my neighborhood. there aren't much decent japanese places at south city, and kamameshi is on the top of my list! :)
go try their bentos, and what makes kamameshi is their oysters, i believe! haven't tried their oysters, but you be the judge!
I have to give an upgrade...yesterday came here for dinner w/ the bf.
I got the beef teriyaki w/ rice...I love that I can just get that and rice and not have to get the whole bento box...at $6.75 that was a good deal!
The beef was cooked perfectly!
I ordered shiro maguro nigiri and it was fresh and buttery and melted in my mouth!
The bf enjoyed his plate of sushi also ..unagi, scallop, hamachi, and the dragon roll...
I'm glad that we enjoyed our food here the second time around...now I can say we will be back!
Oh...and our server was great, she got our order right and was pleasant and efficient :)

This place is one big fat MEH!
Came in on Friday night with my Mom and bf..
First off it was packed,… Read more »
I have eaten a lot of Japanese food, but this place is pretty well priced. It is not good for raw fish or sushi, but the bento boxes give you a lot of food afor a very reasonable price. I enjoy their tempura very much, but you can tell this place is not owned by Japanese people.
If you want afforadable Japanese food, then you will have to settle for a just mediocre quality food. If you are planning on eating out on a Friday or Saturday night expect to wait a long time for both seating and service. Your best bet is ordering take out, try it and see if you like it, before you sit down in the restaurant. They give you miso soup and salad even with take out orders.
I order here often because of the prices.
"Prepare to be ignored"
That's what my friend said when I suggested going to kamameshi house for dinner. Now, I've been there quite a few times over the years, and I already know that the service is far from stellar. But I'm usually pretty forgiving. I hardly ever give one star reviews.
But tonight was the last straw.
There were four of us. Three of us got our orders fairly quickly, which was surprising for me. However, one order took so long that the three of us already finished eating, add another 5-10 minutes after we finished, and that's when the last order came. We even tried to eat as slow as possible, hoping that the order would come while some of were still eating. We were about ready to just leave by then and tried to flag a server to cancel the order when the dish finally came.
The excuse? "The kitchen got busy".
Yeah? I call bullshit. Especially with the half-hearted apology. Nobody ever checked our table. Couldn't even flag a server. When we called one of the older ladies, she just gestured to one of the guys to "take care of it".
It didn't justify the hell we raised, but this put the nail in the coffin. That's it. No more kamameshi. Ever. It's not like they need our business anyway. There are plenty of people who like to eat faux Japanese food.
p.s. Kamameshi - If you actually read all the bad reviews here, they're all complaining about your TERRIBLE service. Decent food, fucking terrible service. Why don't you make it your homework, huh?
WHAT'S COOL:
-They have a fairy large selection and offer bento boxes for around $7 to $8 which isn't too shabby.
-They have a large Japanese style dining room where larger parties remove their shoes and sit at a low table separated from the rest of the restaurant by a traditional style sliding screen door. I love novelty and unique dining experiences and although they're not 100% authentic Japanese, sitting on your knees around the table is a fun change of pace for the average uncultured American like myself.
WHAT'S....[not so] COOL
-It's always pretty crowded so you'll most likely wait for a table for 20 minutes to 35 or so.
-Their prices are slightly higher than other Japanese restaurants of the same calibur of deliciousness, if that phrase makes sense. (I'd like to think that it does.)
Their rolls are good and their teriyaki bentos are pretty good.
Overall, a pretty good establishment that's fun with a large group in the Japanese style dining room.
I really like eating food here and I don't hesitate to bring guests there when they come by to visit. I think it's reasonably priced, the quality of the food is good for what you pay, and the service here is great.
This place is alright. Nothing special, ordinary Japanese food and honestly I think it's a little overpriced for ordinary food. I thought it would be good since we had to wait about 20 minutes to get seated, but I was a little disappointed.
This review is based on my expectations. Though the atmosphere of this place was really, really nice, the service and the food lacked a little something. First, I think we sat for maybe ten minutes without so much as anyone asking if we wanted water, instead this kid came by hella quick with some tea then just hella bounced like he was avoiding us. The waitress was nice. We ordered the Mexican Roll and the Dangerous Roll. They were pretty good. Dangerous roll was really good, to try. For me anyway, I mostly like cooked sushi.
The Bento Box came hella later. Good thing my cousin and I were hella talking about random things. I ordered the chicken katsu with mixed tempura. They give you hella tempura, so that's a good thing. And they do give you the fancy cut orange, which is tight because I love oranges. Anyway...the katsu and tempura were left a little too long in the fryer. The tempura batter tasted more like...a puffy pastry type batter. You know what I mean? Maybe that's what happens when you leave it too long? And the chicken katsu was overdone...It was all a little bit pricey. Maybe its more worth it to go during lunch when the prices for bento boxes are cheaper.
Wasn't terrible, but wasn't what I expected. Maybe it was a busy night? I'll try again and let you know.
I don't understand why this place gets poor reviews. I love the food and the location is convenient. There is plenty of parking, and the waitresses are nice.
The express lunch is a plus! They're all delicious, and for a reasonable price. I mean, come on, who can get a lunch Sushi express for that price else where? And overall, I think their food taste fine. Nothing special about it, but it never disappoints me.
This place is definitely not my favorite Japanese restaurant by any means. However there are a few redeeming qualities which is probably why my family seems to gravitate towards this place for dinner every now and then. First the price. In these times the cost of a meal out matters a little bit more and this place is very fairly priced. I wouldn't call it cheap by any means but to get a large Saporo beer for 5 bucks ain't too bad. Also the cooked items are pretty decent and the amount of time it takes to get your food is rather quick.
Here is why I struggle with this place a little. First the service. Literally we were seated and it took literally 10 min to get a waiters attention to get the table some water. They all kind of wonder around the restaurant in a fog - now I realize that this place is IN the fog, but come on we are inside here. Also, the heat in this place - please turn it up! The weather was cold outside, but can we place another log on the fire please? I mean I had my coat on almost the entire time. And lastly the quality of the fish is not the best, but for the price I guess I can understand why.
So if you want a so so experience and okay food this is a good place, but by no means is it like the best or should it be on someones top 10 list - there are so many others out there that are at least heated and populated with staff that doesn't wander.
I used to eat here a lot but I've been turned off by their service with my last few trips there, that now I just order to-go. For $7, their chicken teriyaki lunch/dinner is a great cheap eat, they give you a large serving of chicken. That's pretty much all I order from them. Their chicken katsu and tonkatsu are dry, and their Nabeyaki udon is bland and uninspired compared to other restaurants. To sum up, Kamameshi House is great if you're too lazy to cook at home and want a quick teriyaki chicken dinner fix.
I been around this area many times but never noticed this place. It's really hidden by the corner, close to Henry's Bar. The interior is cool & they've got a sushi bar too.
Well, we came for their Lunch Express Special, which is serve between 1130AM-230PM only, every Tuesdays-Sundays & it's reasonably priced. We had the Salmon, Beef, & Chicken Teriyaki (all are grilled & comes with special Teriyaki sauce, miso soup & rice). We also had the Manila Roll Sushi (it's shrimp tempura & eel). Food was average :)
Over all experience, 3-1/2 stars :)
Nice place and all, HOWEVER their seating wait SUCKS and their tables are too small to accomodate the amount of food for 3 people . At least for me it did . Also, its really hot and stuffy inside, so if you get hot easily, i recommend not going here .
Overall i give this restaurant an average because there are many minor flaws that they could DEFINITELY work on.
I really wish this place had good sushi since it's so close to home, but it doesn't. I ordered the rainbow roll and spider roll. The sashimi on top of the rainbow roll did not look or taste fresh and the imitation crab was dry. The spider roll was no better. The soft shell crab was dry, cold and stale. Total disappointment.
I really love this place. Any chance i get to go here i take it. Get the sukiaki for 2!! It's worth the price!
It's not upscale, but neither is it plain ordinary. If you want a no-nonsense Japanese meal, this is where you get it. We've been going to this place for years, and they're pretty consistent. That is why they are packed almost every night. My favorite dishes - gomuku and their soba noodles. Their sushi rolls are very good and you can't complain about their prices.
Hope they maintain the quality of their food and service.
Kamameshi - great food for an even better value! You get SO MUCH for your money and the quality of the food is amazing! It is a Filipino-run Japanese restaurant - the service is great, calling in for pick-up is easy, the food usually comes quickly but the weekends can get busy so try to come early.
The bento boxes have the best bang for your buck- you get a great house salad, miso soup and 2 choices for your meal. If you want great food for a great price in a casual setting, then go to Kamameshi - and try the Hawaiian Roll, my favorite!
A great place to eat around the neighborhood where I usually am. It's a very quiet, very quaint little restaurant. But the bento boxes are to die for. One of the best deals when you're very hungry. They give you a great soup and salad beforehand, and then 2 of your own choices. Great deal, nice atmosphere, easy location. Nothing much wrong.
Blah. This place is slow and expensive. They don't have many things to pick from either. I order things to-go most of the time, and it takes a long time for them to make my order, no matter how small/large, raw/cook my order is. I rather drive further to San Mateo to get my Japanese fix than go here (three block from my house).
Last night my best friend, the munchkins, and I celebrated her 27th birthday at Kamameshi. I used to frequent this place but long after moving to the East Bay, I only visited this place once about 2 years ago.
I arrived before she did so I signed us in. There were only two names ahead of us but thirty minutes later, we were finally seated. We already knew what we wanted so we ordered right away.
I am always pleased with the intimacy the booths provide. It's high wooden structure creates a barrier for conversation; especially if you have a voice that travels far.
The service was spectacular. The California roll was a little bit on the fishy side even though imitation crab was used. The maki, well rolled but it's also the one that I trust I'll like anywhere.
The food here is not bad for the price. The sushi is reasonably priced compared to other japanese resturants in the area.
The "tiger eye" sushi is very interesting. Never heard of that sushi roll before, but I love to try new things, so we ordered it and it was really good, if you like salmon and calamari. Bonus.. it's low cal cuz there is no rice with it..
So if you are ever in the neighborhood and crave some sushi and feel like trying something new try the tiger eye. It's different, yet tasty and you won't break the bank at this spot...
I use to go to Kamameshi's A LOT, then I found AJI YOSHI YA in Burlingame, but, last night we stayed local and no wonder why we had not been back - they service has gotten worse. I do not mind waiting for good food, but, as some of the recent reviews mentioned - you do wait...& wait.. I hate flagging down for a refill or assistance. Our waitress never checked on us and pulled one of those - "is everything okay?" when they hand you the check and pray that we leave them a tip for lousy service. The restaurant is loud and we left her the minimum for a gratuity. :(
...bleh...all i really have to say...ive had WAY better bento boxes..........ew..the sushi looks icky....dont go there the service sucks the people are rude&one of the greaest reasons is because i don't like it xD
