Western Springs, IL
Soooo excited we found this place. We knew it was a hit when we walked in the door just by the smell.
Atmosphere - Cute. Hip. Cozy. The noise level was lively (except for Mr. Loud Talker in the booth next to us - sorry if you're reading this, buddy, but serious, people can hear you). The music perfectly suited the night. They do seem to have a some issues with HVAC, but the wait staff knew about it and dealt with it as best they could.
Wait Staff - FANTASTIC. Admittedly service was a bit slow, so just don't go when you're in a hurry. Go when you have time to enjoy this gem. Jessica was a wonderful server and I hope management knows it. After several perfectly timed trips back to our table to check in, we told her it was our first time and that we'd definitely be back. She did something so simple yet sincere, that it solidified it for us. She smiled and said, "yeah". Any servers out there, show your customers you WANT them back, and they will come back. You'd be amazed how often servers, bartenders, even managers ignore that obvious signal to win us over when we say it's our first time somewhere.
Food - Amazing. Truly. I travel frequently, and although I am an equal opportunity eater, I do enjoy Indian when I can. This little place is among the best I've had. My wife had the Vindaloo (she'll get the Kama-Kaze version next time) and I had the Achari Masala.
Drinks - I had the cucumber chili martini (two actually, is that bad?) and love it. Perfect combination of sweet and spice.
Bottom line - EAT THERE. -

Wow! Another Yelper told me that Kama was not to be missed. So true!
Kama is small but cute. Intimate might be the best word for it.
The food is so amazingly flavorful! The crispy chilly potatoes were a good started, not at all what I expected but very enjoyable. The garlic nan was ever so light and tasty. My chicken kadai was tender and tasty. Rivals any Indian food I have had in downtown Chicago but much closer to home and plenty of free parking!Listed in: Middle Eastern / Mediterranean…

I found this restaurant on Yelp and decided to check it out due to the favorable reviews. I have never had Indian food before, but was looking to try something new.
The restaurant is beautifully decorated with rich colors and throw pillows for your sitting comfort. It was very cozy and charming. I imagine this would be a great place for a date.
Our server was very nice and attentive- the service was top notch. They started a $15 table side buffet for lunch and what better way to try a new cuisine than with a myriad of different dishes? I was kind of nervous that my food would be too spicy, but it was prepared mild, just as I requested. I thought that everything was excellent. The buffet really was a great value; you get an appetizer, entree, 3 side dishes, rice, nan and a dessert.
Overall, great experience. If you live or ever pass through the area, check it out. -

I grew up in Rogers Park (an Indian food oasis), live in Logan Square (an Indian food desert!) and prefer to make the journey to the 'burbs for the best Indian food this side of the planet. And the fact that the restaurant owner is in the kitchen speaks volume to the authenticity and attention to detail that is omnipresent in their dishes. And the drinks...!!! Holy mother of goodness, they're awesome! I cannot wait to make the trip again... and very soon.

Yummy food. My first experience with Indian food.

We lived in Hyderabad, India for a year, have been life long fans of Indian food, and have always been frustrated in when trying to find good Indian food stateside. Kama comes pretty damn close. I love love love their Achari Masala - but be warned, it will tear you up. The kids dig what they put together for them - the lemon chicken tadka, pakora. Atmosphere is great. And the service is USUALLY good...but sometimes you have to be patient.

Forget dealing with Devon Ave. and head on over to Kama! Small, inviting, authentic, atmosphere hosted by a husband(chef) Vikram and wife team, using family recipes that will blow you away. Agnes, the wife, hails from Poland and works the front of the house, sharing her wisdom and opinions about what dishes to order. She gave us her time and attention and genuinely cared about our experience. She was right on and our meal was incredible! We can't wait to return!

There's nothing like Indian food for healthy eating with exotic tastes. You can never get bored with their myriad menu options, and Kama Bistro is no different.
We came here with some friends on a lovely late summer evening, which made our outdoor table a perfect choice to enjoy the breezes and cute downtown ambience. The inside is small but cutely done.
Drinks are fabulous - lots of interesting cocktail creations that you won't see at many other Indian restaurants except perhaps Vermillion.
The food was really good. Lots of great, flavorful vegetarian options to choose from, or if you are into your meat, you'll find a lot of delicious entrees that will please. We shared a biryani and my favorite aloo gobi, which was delicious. My friend got the Egyptian baby okra which was tender and delicious.
We'll be back here often! Great find close to home. -

Don't bother to try to get take out. I tried the other night, but no one would answer the phone. I called 3 times over 30 min. and even left a message. No one could even be bothered to answer the phone or call me back during the dinner hour (or even that night). This happened last time I tried to get take out, but someone finally answered the phone then. When I went to pick up my food, they said that it would take 45 min. and then I had to wait another 15 min. on top of that. I got the impression that they hadn't even bothered to start cooking my food until I came to pick it up. I thought they were just having an off night, but it seems like that is their typical operating procedure.
It is sad since I went once before and had a very tasty meal there. I don't think that I will bother again.Comment from Vikram S. of Kama Indian Bistro 1/14/2012

Kama continues to be all-around wonderful. It had been way too long since my last visit, so with a Groupon to use, a friend in town and a hankering for naan, we came, we saw, we ate and ate.
I have to say that my delight was heightened when, upon rounding the corner at Burlington and LaGrange, I spotted a tent-style sign first used at Summerfest that featured a quote from yours truly! The love appears to be mutual. Co-owner Agnes even recognized me later in the evening :)
But don't worry -- we didn't get special treatment, just the normal warm, friendly, helpful service I've always gotten before. We dined on veggie samosas, chilly crispy potatoes, ginger chai, lamb biryani, lamb taka-tak and veggie jahlfrezee and had plenty left over.
I'm so glad Kama is doing well -- I hope they're around for years to come because I definitely need to make my trips here more frequent.Listed in: Suburban gems, Entirely useful, The best of the suburbs, Date night, The Exotic East

Review from Jelena Z.
What's new at Kama? Well, for starters - mixologist Damian has created what I'd call one of the best cocktail programs in the suburbs. Think fresh juices and purees, homemade vanilla sugar, top shelf spirits, and warm elements such as a dash of cinammon here, a smidge of cardamon there and a sprinkle of chili syrup to finish. These libations are insanely good and go down fast - plan ahead and take the Metra in so you won't have to worry about over-imbibing! Because you will.
Vikram continues to flirt with the unexpected in his dishes making Kama Bistro one of the most avant-garde Indian eateries I can think of at the moment. If you haven't yet been - go now!Listed in: Cocktail Loungin' in Chicago., Just Add Butter., VeggieTABLE., Best Date Spots: Chicago, Wine-O

I am excited to find this place, and so close to my home! I had the chicken tikka, and it was delicious. I had enough for my dinner and some to take home and then put on a salad the next day : - )
I am a novice to Indian food, so I can't really compare. The spices were well blended and mighty tasty, garlicky and mildly spicy. I thought it would come out in a clay pot, but it did not. The side of grated purple cabbage and carrots was dried out and I would have liked a side of something I could have eaten. Service was slow, but not an issue as we weren't in too big of a hurry. I will try this place again. Cutely appointed and nice wait staff, albeit slow. -
Review from Aimee M.
I've visited 3 times in the past 2 years and it's been a delicious feast each time. (First for an Elite event and then for Renita M's Suburban Girls Night Out) This most recent time was for Yelp Eats. Kama, you temped us with the half-price entrees, and then sealed the deal with the other items in your tasty menu!
It's a wonder my dining partner Ericka A and I kept conversation up during dinner--I mean with the feast we were having, I can't believe I had time to talk in between mouthfuls of briayanni, lamb and naan!
Appetizers:
Chicken Lemon Tadka--tender chicken in a creamy lemon sauce.
Crispy Chili Potatoes--sweet/tangy sauce over fork-tender roasted potatoes
Main Course:
Black Pepper Lamb--tender pieces of lamb in a black pepper corn sauce
Chicken Makhani--tender pieces of chicken in a buttery/tomato/creamy sauce
Lamb Briyanni--Lamb and spices cooked in Basmati Rice.
Garlic Naan and Butter Naan--soft yet sturdy enough to hold the sauces.
Are you drooling yet? Well, you should be because everything was delicious, well-prepared and truly a feast for the senses.
Service was very friendly and I always love when the owner comes to talk to the patrons to make sure they are enjoying their meals. The space is sultry yet cozy. Very comfy booths.
Yeah, by the looks of things, we might have over-ordered, but that just meant leftovers to take home. And the food was just as delicious for lunch the next day!Listed in: Suburban Sleek, Naan of Your Business

My guy loves Thai and Indian cuisine. Me, not as much. But, as compromise is so often the key between the sexes; it was his pick this time and we went to Kama Bistro.
It has an awful lot of atmosphere going for it and our waiter was great. It was also very crowded. I was pleased at a number of things here: gluten free and veggie options; and a fabulous cocktail menu!!!!
I started with a pineapple martini, oh yeah! The word "mellow" entered my mind and body. It was delicious and I swear I caught a taste of honey in that thing: smooth though it was. My guy went for something whiskey based: equally good and unpronounceable.
For appetizers, and they have quite a few: we had the sweet potato chat, a vegan and GF dish with lime (very good, I must say) and also the onion and garlicky spinach kabobs (which we both loved).
We both had veggie entrees, and I must say that I hate being rushed through my meal. Our server gaged the timing perfectly. I mean, you don't want your plate taken away when you are still forking food into your mouth.
My entree was an Indian wok masala: the sweet red peppers and green peppers were done in a saute' with plum tomatoes and wonderful seasonings that would have made Gandhi happy: my guy always goes for HOT! So, enter the ghost pepper vindaloos. (Not my cup of tea, but he enjoyed it.) I suppose sweating out your toxins is a good thing, right?
I truly feel when you come to Kama that you need to try and immerse yourself in the whole experience. And if you do, you'll have a pretty enjoyable time. Nice place, we had fun. -
Review from Ericka A.
I've been here three times now (third times the charm, right?) and I can say without hesitation that this is one of the best Indian restaurants in the 'burbs. It may even be THE best one, but I haven't tried them all and don't claim to be an Indian expert. I have no idea if it is truly authentic or the best example, but I just know that the service is spot on and I have yet to try a single dish that displeases me. I keep coming back for more and can't wait for the next time.
Everything about Kama Bistro pleases me. It invigorates the senses. All the sights and sounds, the flavors and smells. It's so laid back and loungy. I love that they decorated with a cozy and exotic theme but shied away from your typical Indian interior. I also love that they work with the community to bring customers back by offering deep discounts. They hosted us for a Yelp event, they made us a special menu for Renita M.'s suburban Girls Night Out, I constantly receive coupons via email and they even advertised through Groupon.
Groupon is what brought me back most recently. I knew for a fact that I love them, so the promise of 50% off made it that much more appealing. Stvo K. and I came for dinner before a show and both enjoyed our meals. I typically order chicken makhani, but noticed they offered it with lamb and I couldn't resist. It was amazing, as if I expected anything less, and there was enough to take home for later. -

I don't yelp, just not my thing. I think this is my third in five years. I'm just not that motivated and I like to create my own opinions. Occasionally, I am so surprised by my experience that I feel the need to shout from the mountaintops. This is one of those times. I returned to Kama after several years geographically challenged to stop in more often, so my recent visit, after such a great first impression a couple of years ago, raised the bar for me...and raised it high. Kama has undergone some wonderful changes in decor and in the menu. I describe this place to friends as 'fresh'. Kind of a modern vibe, but with a warmth about it. The staff is probably the most knowledgeable group of folks that I've ever encountered. And they are so willing to share what they know, just ask. The food is chock full of flavor, and with such unique spice blends. There is genius here. I can not say enough good things. Vegetarian and Vegan options are great for friends and there is so much to offer to all walks and palettes. This trip, I started with a great white wine from South Africa, not on my usual radar, but I loved it! I moved into a Spinach Kabab that was just fantastic, again, not on my list of 'norms'. I was really surprised how full of flavor these were. Such an unusual item brought me much joy. So happy was I, that I felt I should challenge myself with something really hot. (I love spicy hot food, the hotter the more fun for me). I bow down to the the skolville master working the kitchen. I say this with all the love I can muster as super crazy hot food is not a light hearted fare, order carefully (they can adjust the heat level). I dared the chef to hottest of the hot with Kami-kaze Vindaloo, I went for a 12 on a scale of 10 and they did not disappoint at all. Most of the menu is designed for flavor and not heat....but I went for the heat. I just had an overwhelmingly attentive meal that was just that far outside of my normal that I feel the need to share. Do yourself a favor, if you are looking for a bit of the non standard when looking for a dining experience, try Kama. You'll be trying to find new friends to take there time and again. You will be back, I promise.

Indian cuisine is never my go to food but Kama is about to change my mind. I love the shiny cozy interior...hazy purple walls, beautiful pillows, low light and fresh flowers. The wonderful decor matches the wonderful people who work there. I was introduced to Kama during an Elite event where the owner's father gave a touching and grateful speech about his son and his endeveors to bring real indian food to the Chicago area.
I came back recently and enjoyed a delicious dinner served by an aspiring hospitality college major who is related to the owner.
We had lamb samosas for an appetizer - wonderfully seasoned! For my entree I had the Tandoor Prawns. Wow, the flavor was smoky and mildy spicy. It came with a cooling salad that paired perfectly. Everything on the menu looks so good, I cant wait to back for more! -

Indian food, definitely not something I regularly eat for dinner. So a friend of mine (and frequent Yelper) took me out to dinner the other day and I was in for a treat. Not just because I didn't have to pay (thanks again!) but also because it's been a couple of years since I've ate at an Indian restaurant. Unfortunately for me, I had to avoid eating a meat dish because I am raised Catholic and this year I decided to be a good one and dodge eating meat on Friday this year.
Fortunately, the menu is very "Lent-Compliant" as it has plenty of seafood and vegetarian dishes. We shared an appetizer which was a type of dry bread, very similar to matzo, I believe it was called "nan?" Probably way off, anywho, it was a nice little side dish and it came with two types of chutney sauce which made it a little more sweet or a little more spicy depending which one you picked.
For the main course, I had the fish takka. Technically it was considered an appetizer but makes for a great main course. It's Mahi Mahi fish marinated in spices and it was very filling.
If you want a taste of Indian food, you can't go wrong here. I look forward to coming back and trying a dish with some meat. :) -

Some tasty indian food in little downtown Lagrange!
Chicken tikka masala, garlic nan, basmati-ish rice, veggie samosas, and a taj mahal to wash it down was the meal had here. The CTM was tasty with a nice kick of spice, while the garlic nan was garlic-y but not overpowering.
The meal was excellent with only 1 complaint - the rice. While the rice was indeed rice, I am not 100% sure it was basmati. It was flavorless and mushy and not what I expect from ANY rice - even overcooked jasmine.
Luckily that was not enough to put me off from an otherwise tasty meal. If the rice is better next time, I could definitely see bumping this to a 5 star! -

Food was good, service was good, ambiance was good. The only complaint was similar to some of the other reviewers who gave less than stellar ratings--the price. Honestly I think that while the food, service, and ambiance was good, the price is what I get hung up on. For two during lunch with one appetizer, no specialty drinks, and 2 vegetarian entries $50 seems a bit high. Check it out for yourself though, your opinions may be different.

Outstanding! My husband and I went here today for lunch after seeing a special Social Deals promo for $15 off of $30. I love trying new restaurants, especially ethnic ones. This was just really good food - very flavorful, not too heavy and not too spicy (per my request).
My husband had Vindaloo with Chicken. I had the Peas with Paneer Bhurjee because I love paneer. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. We also had an order of Naan - it was so light and fresh.
It was very quiet for lunch hour on a friday. At 12:30 there were only 4 other tables full. I didn't mind, because it was relaxing and quiet. The waitress was attentive and offered recommendations since this was our first time there.
This was a 25 minute drive for us and well worth it. We will be going back! -

My husband and I enjoy eating at the Kama Bistro, immensely! We also look forward to seeing the owners, who are the most gracious people and very attentive to the needs of their patrons. The food here is certainly the best anywhere in this area, possibly in Chicago and beyond. The way the flavours are blended and cooked, results in their food being the best we have ever eaten! I am a bit of an expert, having my palette initiated from the age of 6 months in England.
The review by Joanne W. regarding the unfortunate timing of a fire alarm going off, to ruin the peace was just 'one of those things.' But, the firemen taking as long as ten minutes to arrive was surprising and alarming. How disturbing it must have been for all in the 'line of fire' or rather, the line of noise!
However, we are very pleased to have discovered this wonderful eatery, and will continue to return whenever we can make the time, knowing the extremely pleasurable experience we will have. Very attentive staff, wonderful choice of exquisite exotic dishes and surrounded by the ambiance of the lovely unique atmosphere!
For an important occasion, or simply one of the best eating experiences, the Kama Bistro must be a priority! -
Review from Liz K.
Being a vegetarian I just love Indian cuisine. This place is small and intimate and if crowded can be pretty loud for a small place. I love their seating and each time I been there their service was exceptional.
I was disappointed that on a recent visit there were no more samosas, but that pressured me into trying a new appetizer.
If you like super spicy try their ghost chili curry. I had a small tasting and couldn't handle it.
I love their Eggplant Bharta...one of the best eggplant dishes I have had!
Their bread is amazing but watch out and don't eat too much or you will be too full for your entree...hahaha -

I've had Kama Bistro before. My first experience was at a suburban Yelp event where they brought out boat loads of food for us...all of which was delicious. I was really impressed w/the food and even more impressed w/the owners.
I finally stopped in with a good friend for a late lunch on a Saturday afternoon. It was chilly out and I was excited to get some spicy goodness into my system & warm up. The place was pretty empty when we arrived and greeted by the young hostess. We sat, we scoured the menu and ordered.
Our order consisted of samosas, muligatani soup, naan, chicken tikka and the achari masala w/potato. They bring you complimentary rice crackers with a couple different dipping sauces which are delightful. Our samosas arrive shortly after and we start to dig in...pretty good! Next up is the muligatini (which happens to be one of my most fav soups). It was was hot - temperature wise so we let it sit and go back to our samosas and then....
RING! RING! RING! RING!
FIRE ALARM!!!
We see no smoke. We smell no smoke. We are told that the alarm must be going off b/c of one of the other business as they are all on the same alarm system. It will go off shortly we are told. A few minutes pass...
rRIIINGg rrRIINGgg rrrRIINGgg rrrrRIIINGggg
The alarm is starting to echo in the restaurant and is now becoming unbearably loud. We have a 6 month old with us and have to go outside b/c the noise is just too much. We head next door to Hallmark to wait it out. About 10 minutes later (or so) the fire truck shows up to remedy the situation. Hot firemen have a way of making everything better, don't they?
We head back over...and our soup finally cooled off! Hooray! Unfortunately, things went a little down hill after the fire alarm incident. The waitress was very attentive prior to the alarm going off and when we came back. She seemed like she wanted to bring our food our right away but but we had not even really touched our soup and did not even finish our samosas. Luckily she waited for us to finish our first courses before bringing out our entrees.
The low down...samosas were good. Soup was good and had a nice kick but honestly I've had better muligatani. Naan - solid. The entrees were good but we were really expecting more heat to them. They were quite mild and it was a bit disappointing. Also, the waitress sort of disappeared and I had to flag her down for the check....which is a bit annoying.
I realize that things happen but was a little let down that Kama was not more apologetic for the alarm mishap. I still enjoy this place and I will not let this incident sour me. I plan on coming back & am confident that my next experience will be a four-star one!Listed in: Asian Delights

Wonderful WONDERFUL food.
My wife and I shared the Tandori Platter and the Chickpea entre (I forget the name). Everything was better than expected. We've gone to quite a few indian restaurants in the city and often are disappointed. Not here. We will be returning for sure. We even made a point to tell the waiter on the way out that everything was just DELICIOUS! We were very impressed.
The atmosphere was unassuming and clean. The aroma in the air was mild and pleasant. (unlike some restaurants where you feel like you leave wearing the sent of the place) The music was lounge/ethnic with a nice under tone of bass that was very inviting. I even pulled out my Kazaa app to look up a few of the songs.
Back to the food. A nice woman from the kitchen came out to explain each item on our platter and was happy to bring out additional sauces and make recommendations. We can't wait to go back and try more. The lady at the table next to us even chimed in with her opinion of the wonderful Chicken Tika Masalla. She was telling us it was the best she's ever had. Wow - did I say we were impressed? WONDERFUL! -

Kama Indian Bistro became our default Indian restaurant by being half the price, almost as good, and closer than another great Indian restaurant in Oak Brook.
Kama's food is very good, the service is typically prompt, and the atmosphere is quite nice. If you haven't checked it out yet, it's worth a visit. Their Indian food tends to be slightly spicier than other local Indian restaurants, but it's by no means excessive. It's by far the best Indian I have tried in the Oak Park/La Grange area.
However, like most Indian restaurants, the food seems to vary depending on what night you come in. If you're ordering takeout, pad your pickup time. I don't think my food has ever been ready when I arrived. -

Boy oh Boy, am I glad we came back! Husband and I both ordered not our usual dishes and didn't regret it one bit. Apparently, in my last visit, I tried the Eggplant Bharta but completely forgot about it! Well, I'll never forget again. I love love love eggplant and decided to try the Eggplant Bharta. Wow! It was so incredibly delicious. A tiny tiny hit of spiciness and a mouthfull of flavor. Try it!! You'll love it.
My husband had the Achari Masala (with lamb). He had to stop himself from finishing the entire thing to keep his stomach from bursting. I was afraid the dish would be too flavorful/spicy-licous for him, it wasn't. It was perfect.
Why 4 stars then? The service. Don't get me wrong, our server was awesome. He knew about every dish and describe it without fail. Unfortunately, even though there were, maybe, 4 or 6 other people in the restaurant we had to wait a long while to get our drinks and appetizers. The time between appetizers and main course was fine but then, once again, we had to wait a good long while for our check. Then, our server forgot to bring us the leftovers and my husband had to ask the manager (???) lady to grab them from.
I highly recommend you pay Kama Bistro a visit. They take reservations and the ambiance is very charming. The prices are average and the portions are just enough to fill a very empty stomach or take home for leftovers.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I went to the YELP fest yesterday... this was one of the vendors there.
I did not want to wait in the line, because it was soo long.. but I decided to wait, I figured it must be good, if the line is so long..
It was so worth the wait... I had some salad I believe it was a Kus Kus (I know I totally butchered the name lol) and some meat in some redish sauce.. OMG! To die for! I can't wait to actually go to the restaurant to try more of the food.. I will be taking the drive soon. -

First my husband categorically won't eat at Indian restaurants but Kama won him over. We went with a diverse group of friends on a weeknight and had a great evening. I made reservations and when we got there our table was ready, though my only complaint is that is was a bit tight which I did understand due to the small space. The staff was on top of our needs and the restaurant was very clean. I am not an expert on Indian cuisine but will say all seven of us tried something different and all enjoyed our entrees. I have wheat allergies and was pleased with the large variety of gluten free options. I will definitly be back to Kama!

Also I recommend the Pineapple Martini.

Kama is a great little restaurant. I have a lot I love about it...unfortunately they are still working out a few kinks....but WORTH it for the great food!
The ambiance is sexy and chill and hip- kind of like Veerasway in the city. Not formal and banquet hall style like a lot of Indian restaurants. Music is really good Indian house- love it.
Went here with daughter, mother and aunt and ordered all veg- but their are LOT'S of meat options as well.
LOVED:
Mango Lassi-expensive but great for picky kids
Spinach Kabob- WOW! This tasty appetizer is like a very lightly fried crabcake made of spinch! SOOO light and delicious- not heavy at all
Eggplant Bharta- light and rich and sooo tasty with lots of flavor!
Pindi Channa- chickpea dish with some kick to it- YUM
Paratha- a whole wheat homemade bread
(All the meat dishes my mom has tried without me they loved also)
Needs Help:
The service- although our server was sweet, why did it take 45 minutes to get two mango martinis?? Which when they finally did come my mom swore were virgin anyway...
Tea- a teeny tiny mug with no refills
Prices are on the high side, but the food is fresh and tasty.Listed in: Top Restaurants

Excellent modern little Indian bistro, not too long a drive for us, and we will be back.
When we sat down they gave us some pappads and a delicious cardamom tamarind chutney, and dark savory chutney which we liked. The pappads are well cooked, unlike at other Indian restaurants.
We ordered the mushroom pakora as a starter, and it was small and great-tasting appetizer.
I ordered the mulligatwany soup and the sweet potato chat. The mulligatwany was rich with yellow dal, completely smooth and well-seasoned with few grains of rice at the bottom of the bowl for added texture. The sweet potato chat consisted of an appetizer (small) sized plate of cubed potatoes in a delicious, dark hued lemon-based chat sauce.
Significant-other unit had the lamb vindaloo and labeled it the best vindaloo he's had in 13 years since coming to the US. The great part about this restaurant is that they give you a rice bowl with your meat entree as part of the price, and not at an extra fee.
We finished our meal by splitting a kheer, which featured plump and juicy rice pudding topped by a sprinkling of badam and pista (slivered almonds and crushed pistachio). It was refreshing and a perfect ending.
I also tried their apple/cinnamon juice, which is a fresh-made apple juice seasoned with fragrant cinnamon--a perfect autumn beverage which is a twist on the usual seasoned apple cider we're used to.
All around, great value, an enjoyable atmosphere, and really great, up-tempo fusion music. If you are in the area and prepared to try a new, modern take on traditional Indian, take a look and you won't be disappointed.
NOTE: they are still waiting for their liquor license as of mid-November 2009.
The staff was relaxed and friendly, and the kitchen pumped out the food at good intervals - we didn't have to wait even though there was a large group of diners at one end of the dining room. The owner came out personally to talk to each table and check on the food. The Polish waiter was friendly, well-informed on what was available/freshest, and was prompt, curteous, and fast. I can see some delays in food preparation/serving in the case of a full-house/busy evening, but the quality and freshness (no cans) merits a trip or two at the very least.Listed in: Favorite Indian Restaurants in…

So you might want to take into account that I have little to no experience with Indian food, but I really love this place. I went here with my mom last week and had a great experience. Since both of us haven't had Indian food in years, we asked our server tons of questions about the menu and recommendations. He was very knowledgeable and able to answer all of our questions. I ordered the Chicken Vindaloo and my mom ordered the Taka Tak with Paneer. I must say I loved both of them! Good amount of spice and flavor.
The service & food were both great. Kind of a smaller place, so you probably would need to call ahead if going on a weekend night. Also, it was pretty hot inside. The door was open but it was a warmer day and kind of humid, so not super comfortable to be enjoying warm spicy food. That would be my only complaint, however I'll go back regardless!! -

Indian food in Chicago... let me put it this way: I miss San Francisco when it comes to Indian.
Sure there's that strip up off Devon, but this lousy economy has me working out in the western burbs, so you can scratch casual trips up that way. So working in the L.G, what am I to do for Indian? Kama is pretty much it, and it does a pretty fine job.
Since I've only been here for lunch (numerous times) the bulk of my experience revolves around the lunch special options and the thalis. For those who find too many tastes are just right, you will love these. They offer a wide sample of Kama's delights - and misses - along with plain naan, papadums and a little tamarind/mint chutney.
What stops the love train for me is the occasional miss thrown in with the hits. Samosas for instance: should be easy hit no? But they are priced unfairly for their size, yet were decidedly average. On the other hand, some of the day's specials in the thalis are surprisingly good.
So the concept wins on having great lunch options, falls on the occasional miss, rises back up for being the sole Indian establishment of note for a good distance - then falls back again for having a less than ideal interior space.
I'll keep going nevertheless, maybe a few meals will be so good the star count will have to adjust up - we will see.Listed in: Chicagoland

Finally. An Indian restaurant not too far from my house that serves up tasty Indian food in a nice, if stark, environment.
We went on a Sunday night. The phone was ringing throughout our entire dinner. I get that the place is minimally staffed- but something about hearing the phone ring though my entire dinner made me feel like I was in a pizza take out place. If I had a wish, it would be that the phone would be less intrusive into my overall dining experience.
Also- they did a nice job converting this from the old BBQ place that was in the space, and whatever was there before (here's hoping Kama Bistro stays around) but even with the purple walls and tiny pillows along the banquette seats, it still felt a bit sterile and cold. Oh- and it WAS cold- a vestibule would be nice if there was anyway to do that as every time the door opened- the wind blew through the place. Ahh, a girl can dream, can't she? My advice? Keep your coat with you in the Winter months.
But on to the positives- the food and the service. The food was good. We started with a couple of suggestions from our server (Tien?) and both were great. The lamb samosa was quite tasty, and the chicken lemon tadka had a great sauce. For our entrees we went with the Chicken Saag and the Lamb Vindaloo. Both were very good but know that the Vindaloo packs a spicy punch! The Nan came out soft and chewy- perfect to enjoy the sauces on. It's a good value as there was certainly enough food to take home and have yet another meal! Our bill came to $60 for 2 but $10 of that was for my drink (a bit pricey for a standard cocktail, in my opinion)
Kama Bistro just got their liquor license so you can now order cocktails, beer and wine along with your food. They are still working on the execution, however. I saw Grey Goose on the menu in one of the martinis- so I ordered my standby-goose and soda. What I got was Goose on the rocks but it was quickly taken care of when I made our server aware. He did say- that because they just got licensed that drinks that weren't on the menu- were a bit of a challenge still.
The service was friendly, and helpful which was much appreciated. Again- they run a tight ship in terms of help so when we got there- there was no one to greet us or to tell us where to sit. A bit awkward standing around until someone showed up from the back. Since they have only been open a few months- they will find their cadence on this I'm sure.
The food was good so I will be back. I may just order take out the next time, though, as the ambiance left a little to be desired. So that next ringing phone you hear, may be mine! -

I feel bad giving it a less than stellar review, but I've to be Yelp-honest. This place is really very nice, but just not for vegetarians.
First, the reasons I still recommend this place:
- Very nice ambiance with a sophisticated balance of ethnicity and modernity. Love the decor and the details in the interiors. 5 stars.
- Service was warm and genuine. Everyone was trying to make sure we have a good experience and that is a lot to ask for already these days. 4 stars.
- The mango lassi was very good - not too sweet and not too thick! The paratha was good, naan was average. Crispy chili potatoes is definitely unique and very highly recommended!
- Generally, the only 2 reasons that pull down the grades are as follows:
1) The place is really targeted at non-vegetarians. Being vegetarian, I felt marginalized and this is the first time ever I felt that way at an Indian restaurant. All the recommendations, even after repeatedly reminding them that we're vegetarian, continued to be non-vegetarian items. It appeared they weren't too familiar with their own vegetarian offerings.
2) We ordered kadhai paneer and daal makhani. The first was just a few pieces of paneer in a bowl full of oil and green pepper. The flavoring and spicing were done well, but the oil bath was a total turn-off for me. The daal makhani was good, but again, OD'ed on cream. Samosa too was buttered out... 2 stars.
I do wish them luck and I could absolutely sense the sincerity of their effort. I just felt I wasn't their target audience and, unsurprisingly, wasn't fully satisfied with the experience.Comment from Vikram S. of Kama Indian Bistro 1/12/2010
