I remember the horror stories about Kaiser over 20-25yrs ago. I've had private insurance all my life (43yo) and have recently had a $1000deductible.....well I don't use $1000 in a year and that just wasn't working for me....I just stopped making Dr appts because I was not only paying my monthly premium I was gonna have to pay for each visit too.
I finally bought into Kaiser and have had 3 appts in 2 mos to catch up on the checkups I hadn't been having because of the fear of paying for them all. Every experience at Kaiser has been incredible. Fast, curteous, easy, friendly.....even when the pharmacy is incredibly busy I'm out of there faster than I was at Long's. Everything is computerized and tracked by your medical number and YOU are just as in control of your care as they are. When I had blood work done my lab reports were in my email box by the time I got to the office an 1-1/2 hour later.
My physicals were very thorough.....my doctor's asked tons of questions and wrote down everything. Same thing for my son, when one doctor called to check on something he had all the details of his file on a screen in front of him while he was in another facility in another town. Not like my old doc and his manila folder.
I will truly miss my regular doctor of 25yrs.....but Kaiser is working for me right now. They are VERY pro health and prevention and offer lots of classes to educate the public. There are many services available to teens discreetly and for free.
Maybe it's just human nature but we like to bitch about the things we also depend upon. BART riders complain about BART, people complain about their jobs and spouses, and lots of people complain about Kaiser. Certainly we've all had bad experiences from time to time but I have found their care to be generally quite good. I've always been well taken care of and on the rare occasions I've been really sick they've seen me straight away with a minimum of fuss (of course I can't report on what it's like to be hospitalized since that's never happened to me) but I like also that they're run as a not-for-profit. My sense is that they might be less worried about the bottom line when I really need their help. I've run itno cranky nurses or there was the time they misplaced my chart and I waited an hour more than I needed to but mistakes are bound to happen and the overall bulk of my experiences have been quite positive.
They have come a long ways, but still not far enough compared to privated doctors.
