8 reviews for Kairo Kafe
The hookah at this place gets five stars. They have a ton of flavors and all three we got were good (Cairo special, pomegranate mojito and apple). On the other hand, the food is so-so and while it's a BYO, you can only bring beer (watch out, they will take the hard liquor away from you!).
I went with a large group and it was fun, but they forced to sit at a really long table because they said they didn't want to fill up the restaurant by giving us a setup more conducive to having fun in a large group. That wouldn't normally bother me, but the place was empty, it was already 10pm, and only a few people showed up after us.
I'll probably go again sometime, but I don't think I'd be missing anything if I didn't.
This is a very adorable little date location. Now, if only the date goes well, and the menu choices are memorable. I visited mid-afternoon, not exactly the perfect time slot. The restaurant itself was pretty close to empty, with maybe a couple appearing here and there.
Not very hungry, so I decided to try out their tapas, choosing the hummus, baba ganoush, stuffed grape leaves and feta cheese & tomato dip.
I wasn't floored one bit. The portions were wayyy too small. I understand its tapas, but the server could have at least been more clear when asked about portion sizes.
Needless to say the tastes were pretty, well, tasteless. I regret not ordering a whole hookah for myself, rather than clinging to my Hibiscus Lemonade for savor SOME type of flavor.
I didn't appreciate the staff at the back of the hall staring at me either. Creepy and rude I'll say!
This place is great! First off, its BYOB except wine. They even have $5/6 "mixers" on their menu so bring along some vodka and you've got some fancy drinks. Second, quality service- servers are attentive about new coals and don't pressure you to leave. The food was only so so- while the lamb was well seasoned it was very chewy and the hummus was kinda bland. On the other hand its $20 for five good sized tapas dishes, and the food comes out almost immediately.
Drawbacks: You could get seated next to a loud, obnoxious group that never leaves.
Benefits: You could BE the loud, obnoxious group that never leaves!!
Make reservations on weekends, this place is popular!
The $7.95 lunch special certainly SEEMS like a good deal. You can choose between several middle eastern sandwiches (falaffel, hummus, ful, 'feta melt') and the meal includes soup, salad, "hand cut belgian fries," and dessert. It would be a fantastic deal if the food were edible: it is not.
The soup and salad were decent, not great but not bad. Then the main part of the meal arrived, the sandwich and "belgian fries." At first appearance, the hummus wrap sandwich I ordered looked ok. Then I tried it: no seasoning, bland, dry, stale bread also without flavor. It was like eating a long tan tube of nothing. I immediately thought that the gods were punishing me for betraying the other middle eastern place that I have been going to in New Brunswick, right around the corner, the FAR SUPERIOR G&P Lebanese restaurant. Seriously, the sandwich was disgusting. Now let's talk about the "hand-cut belgian fries." If you're going to tell your customers that your fries are "belgian," this should mean that they are pillowy on the inside and crisp on the outside: a true belgian fry is double fried which ensures this remarkable texture. The grease pillows on my plate, while obviously hand-cut, were flacid and tasteless. They didn't even bother to salt them. I barely ate any of my food and it was taken away from the table without comment from the waiter.
Next came dessert. One would think that at a middle eastern place this could mean baklava. But no. The waiter came out and announced "here's a little dessert." He threw down a tiny, microscopic piece of something that resembled cheesecake with an oreo crust but after one bite, it was impossible to tell. The bite was quite the taste experience, but in a bad way. It felt and tasted like a shockingly sweet hydrogenated-oil medley. I had to ask what it was that we were eating: "oreo cookie mousse cake." It tasted like a cheap-ass cake from the 99 cent store.
Seriously, if you want good middle eastern food in New Brunswick the only place you should look is G & P. They really care much more about quality and flavor. You could not pay me to go eat at Kairo Kafe again. It was a total waste of money.
Great Hookah!! Belly Dancer on the weekends is really good! Decent service...I don't think you should try the food..lol something about the back kitchen area just doesn't seem clean to me..your choice ..my opinion and my review!! But you can find me here on occassion with a Hookah :-) ...Let me know what you think...
We have sort out this place for a Mediterranean cuisine and the Hookah. Boy we were delighted we picked it. Warm and Cozy environment with candle lit tables. The food is excellent and the service is great. The waiter is knowledgeable and helped us with the menu. No complaints with the Hookah either.
Its BYOB except wine. We didn't know that and tried to get some in the area. It was late at night and there's no booze in a mile's radius. We went with the in house wine. That's our regret.
You could have a nice dinner and hit the clubs nearby for a late night out. Very energetic and nice neighborhood. I guess the Rutger's Campus has something to do with it. Finding Street Parking is a pain though.
This place HAD fantastic food, and at reasonable prices. Service was great too. If you're looking for good Arabic food, then you'll definitely want to pay a visit to this place. The only problem is that they are only really open for lunch
Update: Months later, perhaps because of new management, the food quality had dropped noticeably. I was very disappointed, since I had hyped the place up to my friends, and ended up with much less than I had expected.
This place is really easy to walk by every day and never notice.
Check out the hookah if you're into smoking. The food isn't half bad either. Nice decor and even nicer staff.
