50 reviews for Kailua Beach Park
GORGEOUS!!!!! This was my FAVORITE out of all the beaches my BF took me to on my last trip to Hawaii. His family is from Hawaii so he was my tour guide. We started the day going to North Shore...which was a good and bad experience (a) insanely packed and it took us 30 min to get parking (b) the waves were so strong that I thought I was going to die since I've never swam in big waves before (c) BUT - it was beautiful and is a must see.
We then went down the eastern side of the island, taking in the views of the mountains and the beaches along here. He hadn't been to Kailua in a long time and didn't remember it, but I insisted that we go there because I read about it. I have to say...it was amazing...and so worth my being pushy to get us here. Unlike North shore...the water here is totally peaceful - baby waves, but not crazy at all. We spent 60% of our time in the water...just swimming and playing around, and watching people on the beach. The sand is also incredibly fine and soft - so it was really pleasant to walk on and lay on.
Even though it was a busy day on the beach it we managed to feel like we were alone out there. The water is also soooo beautiful and light blue/turqoise, and you can see the mountains jutting out into the water a little further north. We spent the entire afternoon there...hanging out, tanning, napping, swimming...and watched the sunset before heading home. Lovely lovely lovely. I miss is terribly - and now when I think of Hawaii I think of the sunset we watched on Kailua beach.
Although - one disclaimer - my bf's fam said that the fine sand is a double edged sword. If you go there on a windy day (which is often on that side of the island), the sand gets picked up and hits you pretty hard. So watch on on windy days. Other than that...it is a MUST see!

One of the prettiest beaches you'll encounter on Oahu.
A must see.
PS. If you want surfing lessons at this beach... call ahead of time. They only offer lessons before a certain time.
Saturday in the park, I think it was the 4th of July.
We actually camped out overnight to get some front row parking, and the official horseshoe pit for our annual Independence Day BBQ at Kailua Beach Park. It payed off, too, because the parking lots were all full by 5:00 am.
We were all blessed with a beautiful day with good friends (and friends of friends, and their friends, too), great food, live reggae music, and, of course, the pyrotechnics over the bay.
And we didn't get nuked. Perfect.

One of the most beautiful beaches I have ever been too. Hands down my favorite Hawaiin beach. We came here a few times during our week in Hawaii. The first time was on Tuesday morning and there were only 2 other people around. We had the whole beach to ourselves. It was awesome! We then came back on Friday and there were a few more people but still not crowded at all. Clear water, small waves, beautiful view. Amazing beach!

Kailua! Kailua! Everytime you go to Kailua, you must throw your hands up in pure delight and let a happy hearty "Kailua!!" ring from the depths of your soul! This is probably my favorite beach on Oahu. It's wonderful for people-watching or reading in the shade or playing in the crisp blue water or just strolling about the shore. Kailua!!
BEAUTIFUL!
The beach is light blue, the sand is extremely fine....
I can't believe this was my 3rd time in oahu and this is actually the first time I've been to this beach. It's like a hidden treasure. Thanks to yelp, I've found my beach in Oahu! I think they also have kayaks that you can rent.

I have to admit I been to quite few beaches in Hawaii and this one is exceptionally nice. Great views of the Pacific Ocean surrounded by swaying palm trees. There is a grassy area if you don't want to sit on the beach and they have two sets of showers.
Since everyone is at Waikiki this beach seems empty in comparison. The sand is fine, soft and clean with smooth water to swim and snorkle in . On this day I saw locals, families, couples and even dogs, yes they allow dogs. This is an approx. 35 minute drive from Waikiki using Highway 61 thorough the Pali tunnel but all so worth it.

just looking at the view and i swear i could hear the hawaiian theme song of israel kamakawiwo'ole 'iz' s "somewhere over the rainbow." http://www.youtube.com...
the ocean front house we stayed at had a lovely pool and warm jacuzzi. you could literally walk right up to the uncrowded beach.
tons of colorful kites attached to surfers peppered the sky. my little niece thought that they were birds and since she's obssessed at the tender age of one, i let her believe they were birds.
we kayaked over past the beautiful homes on lanikai beach to the mokes island hopping around. after checking out the bird sanctuary, we headed out to snorkel and unfortunately, my gear was letting in water and i was not able to enjoy some reef watching.
the highlight was feeling the heat on our backs and listening to the sounds of the ocean waves while taking in the view. a turtle swam right by, stuck his head up and went back down to join the reef.
watch out for the portuguese man o' war. a sting even from a dead and detached tentacle can be very painful. but these aren't too plentiful unless a big storm sweeps them in.
times like these make me want to drop my day job, set up a shaved ice stand and just kayak and surf for days.

I saw William Shatner here! Cool, Captain Kirk likes to get his tan on.
And I saw some people with a Christmas tree on the beach with ornaments and presents and everything! Is this a normal island thing? I mean I am used to warm winters in Texas but Christmas on the beach? I think that is taking it to far...like southern hemisphere too far.
I love Kailua Beach because it is much more laid back than those in Waikiki and really convenient to the neighborhood. Beautiful sunrise everyday and the waves are strong but not scary! (I'm from Texas, don't judge me, you island wave-snobs)
And since many of the entrances are private for the neighborhoods, the beach stays pretty clean. Please don't make this a dirty public beach!

Kailua Beach Park is right next to Lanikai Beach Park so I don't know why they have separate names. I will literally copy and paste this review to the other since they're basically the same place!
The beach here though is amazing. Just as beautiful as Waikiki, without the crowd. I think we had the best pictures here and ther's plenty of parking. I saw some people on the boards with sails, whatever you call those and it looks super fun. I want to try it next time but if you have a car, definitely come here!
The sand on this beach is so soft and once you get into the water you feel like you're walking on a carpet. The water is nice and warm and clear too. While there were a lot of people spread out along the beach it wasn't over crowded. If you're into kayaking you can rent them out here too.
We rented a house for the week in Kailua and this was the closest beach. The beach is great, not very crowded and plenty of shaded places to get out of the sun. If you don't get there early the main, and small, parking lot will be full and finding the other lot (on the left side) is kinda tricky. The waves are very small so there is little undertow for those whose are not good swimmers but like to get in the water.

This is a nice beach for swimming in sandy-bottomed clear blue waters, as well as laying out on nice soft sand. This beach has the benefit of not being too crowded because it is off the beaten path and is surrounded by residential neighborhoods (vs. hotels). Once on the beach, you can travel up the beach for 3 miles until you find that nice patch of sand.
I don't know if they're regulars, but I saw the coolest thing--woman with four dogs (pug, beagle, weiner dog, and lab), and she swam with all of them for a long time. The pug was statuesque on a boogie board while one of the other dogs pulled. Very cool-crew. :)

Kailua will always and forever be my favorite. Now this is the beach you should think of when you think "tropical, white sand beaches of Hawaii." The sand is the softest I've ever felt. The water is perfect for boogie boarding. And it's really shallow too, so you can swim far out, and you'll be fine. It can be a little windy over there, but it's alright. Everything else is the really the definition of paradise. This is where you want to go if you need to relax. Ahhh, Kailua I love you.
NOT crowded at all! Parking lots available and some picnic benches near the parking lot if you wanna but out your pineapple and eat it (what my family did several years back).
Got here around 10 AM and it wasn't crowded at all. Plenty of space to lie down your beach mat and towel and enjoy the crashing waves. Even by the time we left (around noonish) there weren't that many more people. The water was a bit cold, but refreshing after lying out for some time.
If you feel like kayaking, there's a near by rental and you can bring it here. Noticed a large group of kayakers getting a lesson.

Nice, family beach. Great for kayaking, windsurfing.
Lots of people walk their dogs here
Don't get me wrong... its a beautiful beach... love going here to have some bbq! but, the place sometime is sooo over crowded. Parking is so hard to find inside the beach park. It's like another Waikiki beach already! My in law loves coming here... and only here he wants to go whenever he came and visited us. But, I suggest if you want to relax and have a clean white sandy beach... go to Waimanalo beach park.

Get away from the hustle & bustle of Waikiki & see some paradise. Quiet, secluded, and gorgeous. Find some coconuts along the beach and use them as floatation devices. Hard to beat.

Declared 1 of the top ten beaches in the world. And it definitely is. The beach I feel like is more so for the wind/kite surfers vs. the swimmers b/c of how windy it can get here. I've seen a lot of dogs being walked along the beach, which is nice and aides in the "family fun-day" type of atmosphere. The sand here is unreal soft. IMO, the beach can be a bit difficult to find if you're not a local.
Also, I've never seen the waves get big enough where a two year old could not handle themselves. So i'd say, it's perfect for kids and adults who are tired of the flatness that is ala moana beach park.

Hands down most beautiful beach I've EVER seen! It wasn't horribly crowded, although most parking spots were taken...I just loved how turquoise the water was...and it was quiet! I hated Waikiki...Yeah I liked the beach a little, but after seeing Kailua...I don't think I'd go back to waikiki unless I needed to go to the abc store, haha. Definitely drive away from Honolulu and check this beach out! It's worth it!
The park has parking, restrooms, showers, picnic tables and a boat ramp.
All this and it's not crowded; the beach is long and wide.
Offshore there are windsurfers. The beach is clean and the water gentle.
The beach provides excellent support for walking.
I love this beach and every single moment spent on it.
The view is amazing and the people are friendly.

Kailua is my favorite beach on Oahu. The view is breathtaking. The water is clean and a gorgeous turquoise color. The sand is so soft and fine. Parking is easy and it's not overly crowded like Waikiki Beach.

Kailua Beach Park is on the windward side (east) of Oahu. There is ample parking in the parking lot or along the roads in the area. The white sand in contrast with the blue water was great. There is a grassy area and BBQ's available adjacent to the sand.
The water was a good temperature and the waves and current were not strong. This made for good wading or swimming. Rent a kayak or kite board for more water activites. The ocean break is far out so all of these can be done relatively safely.
If I come back to Hawaii, this is the beach I would go to first. Unfortunately, I have to rate at 4 star since it does not beat the South China Sea for me.
Wear sunblock and reapply often to prevent sunburn and skin cancer.
Great, less crowded beach on the windward side. There's also a parking lot which is really convenient if you aren't staying around the area... the waves here are a little less tame than over in Waikiki, but they are much more fun! Great place for boogie boarding.
A few years back I also went kayaking here which was fun as well. We went out to flat Island and got to walk around... just down the way (I think it's Lanikai beach) you'll find a lot of nicer homes just along the beachfront... oh how I wish I lived THERE. Definitely come check out Kailua Beach Park in Kailua -- home of Justin Young!!!
Gotta give my "home" beach some love. KBP no kidding rocks - its not as touristy as Waikiki is (this is a good thing ...), though you do get some Japanese who venture up the Windward side of Oahu. So if you prefer the feel of a community beach park and not a tourist gaggle, KPB is for you.
The range of activities out here is great -- wind surfing, kite surfing, kayaking (out to "flat island" or even the Mokolua's off neighboring Lanikai Beach - where you'll also find outrigger canoiing and stand-up paddling) ... the sand is also good for running along the beach, though there are also running/biking trails along the actual "park" side of KBP.
When I came to Hawaii, I used to think ... Boy, I gotta live in Waikiki -- but that's just what people recognize and know. But after spending time down there and having promotional flyers shoved in my face every 10 steps and the suffocating gaggle of the masses, I quickly realized and I'm much happier with my Kailua Beach Park.

I love Kailua. It's really quite a change from the hustle and bustle of Waikiki, and the near-death-beckoning waves of the North Shore. The beach here is just enough excitement to get my blood flowing, and calm enough to make relaxing on an inner-tube possible. I prefer the latter, natch.
There is a variety of activities available to beach-dwellers, including wind-surfing, kite-boarding, and kayaking. All three are popular on Kailua Beach because of the healthy winds that blow on and off throughout the day. Rentals are available in the parking lot, as well as down the road at the small shopping center.
There's a bathroom and showers, which adds to the appeal, and makes this beach increasingly more popular. Come early for prime spots, parking and beach spots.
Hang out long enough and you may see a turtle or two poking a curious head out of the water to watch the funny skin suits soaking up the UV rays on the beach.
All in all, a near-perfect beach!

I've been to this beach 5 or 6 times. It's a soft white sand beach, and the water is the most beautiful color of blue. The view here is very nice too. The waves are very mild here making it perfect for families. I've never seem it really crowded. It's a lot less touristy than Waikiki.
The beach is somewhat narrow, but there are trees that line the area where the sand ends (away from the water) and the grass begins. These provide nice shady areas for those that prefer shade. This is a great beach for relaxing, sunbathing and people watching.
They have a small parking lot, and I've never had trouble finding a space. They have nice restrooms that are actually clean. They also have showers for rinsing off.
The one problem with this beach is that it can be hard to find. Buzz's steakhouse is right across the street, so if you have a GPS plot Buzz's steakhouse in Kailua and it'll get you there.
Beautiful beach! Go kayaking if you have time! There's a shop just up the street that rents them. We paid close to $50 for a double kayak for a half day. It was a ton of fun!
There's plenty of parking if you go on the weekdays. The weekends can be tough.
My favorite beach on Oahu to just relax. It is so peaceful and picturesque. Instead of looking at those pretty postcard photos, you're actually there! I really wish I rented a kayak and explored around, but I didn't have time so the next time I'm back, thats what I'm definitely doing!
Probably one of my favorite beaches I've visited on the east side. Super soft sand and clear waters with just a little bit of wave. I loved the huge sand hill. I perched on that thing, ate some lau lau we bought out of someone's garage and thanked God I was in Hawaii!

Rent a kayak to use if you're lucky to be here on a day that's not overly windy. This beach is big, quaint, and gorgeous. It's not crowded at all and very clean. The last time we came here in 2007 was really windy. Back in 2001 and 2002 I remember it being calm and peaceful.
I guess my advice would be to check the wind conditions before you decide to go. Overall, it's a very beautiful beach!

This beach is awesome! There's so much to do from building sand castles, lying on the white sand soft beach doing nothing, to swimming to kayaking in the protected mellow waters. We donned our snorkel gear and fins and swam out to Flat Island. The island is really FLAT. The swim was about 1/4 mile each way. What is great is that it's only less than 10 feet of water with great visibility the whole way. I know you can still drown in this depth of water but since I knew we would make it there and back, it was just nice to know we weren't swimming in super deep waters. Once you get to the island, if you brought shoes (if you kayaked perhaps), you can walk around the state seabird sanctuary outskirts without disturbing them.
We came back the next day and rented a double kayak and went out to the North Mokulua Island which is the one to the left in most postcards you see taken of Lanikai beach. Although Kailua is a farther distance from Lanikai to this island, that's where we launched the kayak from so we ended up kayaking about 1.5 miles each way. Getting to the island was ROUGH! I get seasick easily so between trying to pull my weight on the kayak, trying to look at the horizon so I wouldn't get sick, and having to them look directly at the wave directions so we could direct the kayak to always be going exactly against the waves to prevent tipping and max forward movement, it was hard for me. We were going against the tradewinds going there and it took about 2 hours I think that day to get there. Once we got there, it was great! Another bird sanctuary island. The other island is off limits to people.
It was true heaven to be here with only a handful of others that braved the ocean to get there. Only thing was at once point, there were 3 diff people on their cell phones around me, what a way to spoil such a cool, nature, vacation loving moment.
After some lunch and refreshments, we were ready to head back. What a difference the winds make! It took us only about 45 minutes to get back with the winds on our side and I didn't end up getting seasick. Yay! What a great work out. We were sore (in a good way) for a few days afterwards. Beats going to the gym, any day!
Small but very pretty beach. Best part is the fine white sand. Supposed to be good for swimming, wind-surfing, kayaking and body boarding but I just took pictures and enjoyed the sand and trees for a bit since it was around 6PM (starting to get windy and a tad bit "chilly"). Supposedly there are jellyfish and stinging seaweed in the waters too, so heed any warnings.
The area around the beach is nice too. Jogging along Kalaheo Ave is nice (except for all the dumb construction that's been going on for ever) because you get to see nice houses, the beach and the ocean breeze. And it's pretty level ground.

I have gone swimming, snorkeling, and kayaking here... waters get a bit rough at some times... but its definitely my favorite beach on Oahu.

Ahhhhhh.....feel the burn!! Yup, we mainlanders had lathered up with sun lotion SPF 45, but to no avail we got burnt, some to a crisp, think almost Cajun/black'nd and some to a golden toasted marsh mellow brown.... such is life...
Parking, not too bad, the day we were visited the local canoe club was having a bottle and can fundraiser, in Hawaii you get 5 cents back on cans and bottles!! Not bad, eh? So it was a bit busy and noisy. Parking-wise we got rock-star parking the first time around, then we only waited a few minutes the second time around, after picking up plate lunch at K&K up the street, we brought it back to the beach to enjoy.
Sun, surf and beach were wonderful, the views of this tropical get away are truly breath taking, from the waves, the white sand, to the turquoise blue water what's not to like?

I have nothing bad to say about Kailua Beach. The water is warm yet refreshing. The view is spectacular. I guess the only drawback is that it can be quite a drive from Waikiki if traffic sucks.

I love this beach.
I have spent many days coming to this beach. I love the long stretch of sand that you can walk up and down. The beach isn't as crowded as other, more popular, beaches. The sand is so soft and fine, and it is very comfortable to lay out on. However, this same fine sand will get everywhere, and is hard to get rid of. There are nice warm breezes. The water is nice and calm, albeit choppy, and is great for swimming: I love swimming to Flat Island off the Boat Dock end of the beach. You can also go Kayaking and Wind-Surfing: Kayaking is my favorite.
I have taken so many visitors here, and they have almost always said that they love this beach much more than others they have been to on the island.
There are some things to consider when coming to this beach. The wind does pick up in the late afternoon, and it does get colder. I would suggest getting to the beach for mid-day activities. Being on the windward side, the beach is susceptible to jellyfish. But, if this happens, there will be warning signs set up on the beach.
A wonderfully calming beach that always rejuvenates me.

One of my favourite beachs in Oahu. It's quiet. The water is so blue and clear. This is known as the kite-surfing beach. I guess they have a lot of winds in this area.
I took kite-surfing lesson here and it was fun. I was traumatized for a second, but it was seriously worth it. And affordable.
Look for a very tan caucasian man with a bunch of kites.

I spent a good 2 hours here before heading down to Lanikai but seriously, the view is spectacular and this beach is known for its windsurfing. It was freakin' WINDY!
Went in the water for a dip and the waves were so rough. Ended up getting blasted by the swell -- had to exit stage left. But other than that, I'd come back here again.
