3 reviews for Kaila's Cafe
Kaila's WAS a great place to go in the Catonsville/Arbutus area. Kevin, the owner, was an incredibly nice man who also happened to be a great cook.
I'm a vegetarian, and Kevin used to make me the delicious jerk chicken wrap with frozen vegetarian chicken substitute I would bring in. He'd keep it on hand, marinating, for when I would come by. Sometimes, if I was pulling an all nighter, I'd call to see if Kevin was still awake. If he was, he was always willing to let me come in and make me a fried plantain.
It was often a little bit of a wait to get your food, but you didn't mind as you could do a puzzle, play chess, and talk to Kevin.
However, Kevin closed down Kaila's and moved back to Nigeria. Kaila's Cafe is no more! It's a shame!
This place is where to eat. Yes, you have to work your schedule around getting food from here, but it is seriously worth it. The place is typically single handily run by one man named Kevin, and he is worth getting to know. Head in there sometime and get your hands on a menu and a feel for his personality, and from then on out call ahead. Call thirty minutes ahead. Kevin sometimes makes his own hours, so getting breakfast or late night food can be difficult. The food is always fresh and hand made, so the quality is top notch. I highly suggest the jerk chicken wrap, quesadillas, falafel wrap, or a giant jerk chicken omelet! When was the last time you had sweet potato fries? The place is very small, but he has two small tables and a few booth seats if you'd like to eat in. You may second guess yourself standing outside, but do yourself a favor and give it a shot.
Kevin is worth the trip. It's a little hole in the wall sort of diner/takeout place. The place is really just a hang out for UMBC students and local high schoolers.
