After two months on a harrowing adventure aboard the T.S. Golden Bear  where we couldn't identify the meat they were serving, it was a relief to find Kahuna Kabobs, even though I passed by it a couple of times because it's in the marketplace... away from the street they mentioned.

Ordered the seared tuna. My friend and I devoured our entrees in minutes because it was... that good. Recommend that and the shaved ice. The consistency of the ice was just... succulent.

Cash only. Friend tried to pay with card..

Meh, nothing special. Kahuna Kabobs and Mala came with an enthusiastic recommendation from a local art gallery owner.

Had the Mahi Mahi kabob plate which is like an island plate lunch which had two scoops of rice, a big kabob and potato salad. The rice was cooked well, the potato salad was good and the Mahi Mahi was good. I guess just nothing to say that this meal was better than average.

There was a nice view of the ocean front from the patio tables which was a plus and so was the price for this area. But really you can go a few blocks away from front street and have some pretty darn good local food.

Yum!  What a cute little place right off of Front Street.  Order up at the window, and eat at the plastic tables and chairs or bring it back to your hotel.  We ordered 2 kalbi dinners here to go - delicious!  Comes with lots of rice and a helping of potato salad.  The kalbi meat was great.  Made our stomachs happy!

Not too bad, but I don't think it's amazing.  Sorry, I know everyone loves Kahuna Kabobs, but seriously this is nothing spectacular.  I was really looking forward to trying something with local flavors, as I have seen some local recommendations, but seriously this is nothing more than average.  I had the teriyaki chicken plate and my boyfriend had the mahi mahi kabob.  It was decent, but I really felt there wasn't a showcase of flavor or tenderness to these meats.  I do have to say, if you want to be a bit healthy and go with brown rice it is actually quite good here.  I do love the tucked away location off of front street, almost like your hiding away from the tourist spots.  They do have a decent sized menu, so lots of things to try.  I'm not saying I would never go there again, but I wouldn't have the highest expectations when you go there.

If you missed "Cats" on Broadway, you can actually see it again at Kahuna Kabob because there is a large collection of strays hovering around the patio tables. And you don't have to hear the strains of "Memory" either. It's in the Lahaina Marketplace opposite that tourist maggot...I mean magnet, Cheeseburger in Paradise on Front Street.

It's a low-key kiosk with a pretty full menu of pupus, wraps, soups and salads, and shish-kabobs. I actually tried the special ono kabob sandwich which came with a pretty decent Caesar salad. It was a tad pricy at $10.95, but it was a generous portion and the fish quite fresh tasting. The cats seem to like it too. Interesting how none of them went near the fish-n-chips place next door....hmmm. But they can be fastidious. The white cat is on the Zone as he avoided any carbs like the Caesar croutons, while the striped one is a failed vegan as she would lick the dressing off the lettuce leaves. The gray one, a total alpha, eats anything.

FOOD - 4 stars...fresh-tasting ono on a toasted roll...yum
AMBIENCE - 3.5 stars...Midnight...and the kitties are sleeping (cue for swelling violins)
SERVICE - 3.5 stars...come and get it
OVERALL - 4 stars..."Cats" on Maui

We set out to find this place after our whale watching tour. We were bound and determined to find it, since a bunch of YELPers had commented about it.  Piece of cake. Its pretty easy to find if you know that it is set off front street. It is in one of the few areas that is like a back alley with lots of shops and food.

We pondered what to eat for quite awhile. So many things looked good. The kabobs, wraps, meat and rice, etc. I ordered the Mediterranean style wrap with babaganoush, feta cheese, some onions, mixed greens, and falafel. Steve got the Shoyu chicken with brown rice and mac/potato salad combo.

The service was good. Basically you order at the window of the little shack and then they call your name. It was fairly quick, but long enough that we know they were actually cooking it when we ordered it. Everything was very fresh and really delicious. I thouroughly enjoyed my wrap. it was HUGE, the size of a very large burrito. And the prices were good as well. Pretty reasonable.

We did not see any of the elusive cats. Maybe next time.

This is a hole in the wall tucked into a lane off of Front Street.  You eat at little tables shaded under a tree and the food is fabulous.  The entrees were priced at $6-11, and they have daily specials including the double teriyaki cheeseburger I got - YUM.  MUCH more appealing than tourist traps like Cheeseburger in Paradise.

Kahuna Kabob features local food at affordable prices. Finding the place is a bit tricky .... as you walk north towards Lahainaluna street, you might see a Fish & Chips sign in a little open market area ... head into that open market area past the fish and chips sign to reach Kahuna Kabob. If you find yourself at the corner of Lahainaluna and Front streets, you've past it by and don't even think of going to that Cheeseburger Paradise across the street. Turn around, and head into that open market area.

The menu has fish, steak, chicken, and tofu kabobs along with sandwiches. They offer cajun, garlic butter, and other fine flavorings on your grilled meats and veggies. I went for the Surfer's Special when I visited - cajun spiced ono fish sandwich with pesto and onions, lettuce and tomato on a hoagie style bun. It was very tasty - fish rarely tastes very good to me when it isn't battered up and deep fried, but this stuff was very pleasing. Sides included either a good-sized caesar salad or a substitute of white rice and potato 'n macacroni salad (basically potato sald with macaroni mixed in from what I could tell).

The price was fine ... $10.95 for the meal and another $1.75 for a 24 oz. bottle of diet coke. The total was around $14. You grab a table in the food court-looking area beside the Kabob stand.

There are some stray cats that live in an abandoned food stand. They made their presence known almost as soon as we picked up our food, with one cat sitting himself down between me and my travel partner, looking up at us waiting for his/her share of our meals. Of course we gave in to the cuteness factor and gave each of the 4 cats that eventually showed up a taste of the cajun grilled ono fish.

The service is friendly, quick, and the prices are good for fresh fish in downtown Lahaina. Looking for a meal after a sunset sail that only included drinks - this is a good pick in my book.  I'd like to try to the fish kabob on my next go around in Maui.

For what it is, and by comparison to its surroundings, its great! The vast majority of restaurants (and shops) on the main drag through Lahaina are gravity wells for obese tourists, so eating at Kahuna Kabob was a nice break from the other worthless food spots.

The food was perfect after a day of surfing - low key and tasty.  For five of us, the bill came out to about $60 which is expensive for lunch but cheap for Maui. I would rather pay twice that much and eat at Kahuna than fall victim to the cheeseburger trap across the street.

Terribiyaki (Terribly yucky) for my husband, Euigi. :(
His steak kabob with pineapple fried rice and mac salad was quite disappointing. He said the beef was too chewy and overly rich in teriyaki sauce and spices. Oddly enough the fried rice and salad seemed to have tasted the same. Basically a Teriyaki overload meal. Or maybe bad beef?? Nonetheless, he wasn't too happy.

However I didn't think my shrimp and onion kabob with brown rice and mac salad was terribiyaki. :) It was quite yummy. Mac salad didn't taste like the ones I had at local Hawaiian restaurants but it wasn't bad. My only complain: too small of a portion. One more kabob and another scoop of rice and I would have been completely satisfied.

A favorite hangout to roaming hungry stray cats but then again they're actually everywhere in Maui.

This place is pretty decent.  Located in a little court yard off of Front Street next to Captain Dave's a must try Fish & Chips.  KK is pretty good, their kabobs are flavorful both steak and chicken.  They also have the seared tuna sashimi special that is pretty good as well.  They also give you a choice of white or brown rice.

In the midst of awful, low quality but high priced tourist restaurants ie Cheeseburgers in Paradise....Kahuna Kabob is low key and pretty tasty. They serve great island specials like the fish and purple mashed yams (My favorite favorite yams) I have a bias about anywhere that will serve me brown rice instead of white because for some reason its rare to find brown rice (which I far prefer). I would rather eat here than any generic, pricy, touristy, uncreative restaurant in Lahaina.

We found Kanuna Kabob on my GPS and it was definitely a good find.  Seems like a place for the locals and prices are more than reasonable and the food was great!  I had the beef and shrimp Kabob, which came out to around $8, but you'll want to get at least 4 kabobs in order to get full.

It's a low key counter restaurant.  We came here for dinner on our first night in town because it was located across the street from our hotel.  I had the ahi wrap and my bf had the burger, both were fabulous.  Beware there cats roaming for hand-outs.

Great variety and decent prices. Open air market has a great atmosphere. And the cafe next door is great too. I went to Kahuna a few times in my four days here. Beef ribs are always tough to find but they have them.

Had the beef kabobs, over Molokai potatoes and steamed vegetables.  I liked it a bit more than Julie did - the potatoes were slightly sweet, and the meat was pretty good (definitely not outstanding) but well spiced.

I came here based on the reviews and I have to say, I was disappointed with the quality of the food.  The plates we ordered were substandard for the price we paid per plate, $9.95.  When I asked the guy at the window what he would recommend, he said the Ahi sashimi plate for $14.95.  The name of the place is called Kahuna Kabab and he recommends the sashimi.  That should have been an indication for us to leave.  No way was I going to eat raw fish from a shack.  Instead, we ordered the beef kabob and kalbi plate with a side of Ceasar salad, and their soup of the day, broccoli cheddar..  The salad was fresh for sure, but other than that, nothing special.  The beef was tough and had to keep spitting out the gristle.  The broccoli cheddar soup was interesting and has a kick in it and extremely cheesy.  For the price, the portions were small and nothing to write home about.  For $30, I think I would rather go elsewhere for dinner.
