On my trips to the DC area I like to stay in Crystal City there are a lot of little place to eat and they all seem to be great. I have been to the Kabob Palace before, which I think is one of the BEST around. Well Kabob Palace Family is on the same level the food is fresh and tasty, and you get a plate load of food. The two best thing here are the Chick Peas and the bread!! I do believe I could just have a bowl of the Chick Peas and the bread and be very very happy!!!!!!
I do think I made a mistake when I did not order the all you can eat buffet!
The crowd and I do mean crowd, the place was packed, all seemed to be getting the buffet. As they passed by our table I could see the plates full of food, all of which looked outstanding. It also looked like what I had ordered was on the buffet for a lower price. I normally look at the buffet in most small places to see what the food their are serving looks like, but for some reason I did not, to my lose! I do thing the next time I hit this place I will go for it!
One more thing we ordered the Ice Tea, what a treat!! It was fresh brewed REAL tea not Nestle it was poured into a glass on finely chopped ice! It was full of flavor and with a wonderful aroma!
Do not pass this place by, try it!
Rember to eat well and live well! And no chain's!

Inexpensive, delicious food, served fresh at all times of the day and night.  I ate here in June 2009, and I was impressed.  I ordered the saffron chicken, and my companion ordered chicken done some other way.  Both were very good, but his was better - I think it was really garlicky.

They do not have alcoholic beverages, btw.  They do have mango lassi, and they are very good! They also have free hot tea in the back.  After you order, feel free to go and help yourself.

The ambience is nothing to speak of; the harsh fluorescent lights are bright.  But the price is right, and portions are so large that two people should share a ($9) entree.

I recommend, for delish, cheap eats.

I love this place! Food is wonderful and spicy, staff is very friendly. We usually stop in once or twice a month on Saturday's and have the buffet. Love the chick peas and the bread.

I have gone to many, really, many kabob places. Kabob Palace is THE BEST! yes, the chick peas are a bit greasy, but SOOOO FLAVORFUL. I have ordered the lamb kabobs, chicken kabob, combination of the 2. Kubideh, samosas, the complimentary salad, I don't care much for. The bread is great and the dipping sauce is AWESOME (I ask for more sause always!). My BF has cravings about this place. We have been going there for at least 3 years! The tall guy that takes the orders is sooooo friendly. He knows me and my BF by name, I am too embarrassed to ask him for his 3 years later!...so, if any of you know his name, please share! If you are NOT watching your calories, order a mango Lassi...is a sweet mango drink. I cannot walk away without ordering the shrimp brihyani (sp?) with a side of chick peas...yum..._

EDIT: I have already made a rewiew of ths place...but I have to say that I got take out last week...trying to watch my weight... and this place is still awesome! I got the Chicken Kabob and rice with chick peas... I still don't care for thre small salad, but the dipping sauce and bread..yummm  I was a good girl and ate half and saved the rest for later, I enjoyed it for dinner...double whammy! ....any clues about the tall guy that takes your order?...he knows me by name and I have no clue what his name is...I've been going there for over 4 years...helpppp!

Service was efficient and the place was pretty clean...however, my food was way too spicey...and the side dishes I ordered were taken from the buffet by my waiter....this made me made because I did not want old buffet food...and the spinach and potato from the buffet was just that old...overcooked, oily, inedible!  I will not go back.

Excellent Paki kabob.  If you love the original KP, this place may just be too much for your eating senses.  If you go for the lunch buffet, which is a steal at $10 (that's the price of one plate next door), do yourself a favor take the rest of the day off.

Really great.  Inexpensive.  Great entrees and the chickpeas and bread are excellent.  Waiter was very friendly and helpful.  One of the few great restaurants in Crystal City!

This place is soooooo good.

It definitely has the best butter chicken I've tasted in this area. I appreciate the fact that they are open so late. The food is good, all that I've tried has always been excellent. Veggie samosa, koubideh, butter chicken, boneless chicken kebab - always top notch. The bread is excellent.

Then, when you get the bill and are shocked at how cheap that super filling dinner was - I'd say that's the best part.

Really good food!!! I got the boneless chicken which was awesome!!! No one at the table liked the chick peas...yuk!!! The chapli kabob were hard and rubbery like tires! Chicken karhi was excellent!!!!! The seating arrangement was kinda tight! Couldn't understand why 2 people were sitting at a table for 6???

I have been to the family restaurant a handful of times but you can usually find me a few doors down at the "real" Kabob Palace.  Last night there were four of us girls in a car deciding on dinner (with me at the wheel) and there was a plum parking spot in front of the family restaurant.   The conversation went something like this:

Friend:  Oh there's a parking spot right in front of Kabob Palace
Me: That's for their other restaurant.  I can't park there for Kabob Palace.  I'll find a metered spot.
Friend:  But that's parking for Kabob Palace
Me:  (points to the far left) That's Kabob Palace.
Friend: (points to the right) No, that's Kabob Palace!
Me:  You mean Kabob Palace, right?  The hole-in-the-wall place open 24/7 with the bright yellow awning?
Friend:  No, I mean Kabob Palace (still pointing to the right to the white sign)
Me:  OOHHHH you mean the upscale Kabob Palace?
Friend:  No, they have plastic tables and chairs!
Me: But you don't get to carry your food on a plastic tray and eat off a styrofoam plate!

Contentious, yes, but it was all in good fun.

While the real Kabob Palace can get busy and seating is scarce (especially if you're going with a group with more than 2), the family restaurant doesn't appear to ever have a dinner time wait.  The restaurant has table service and the wait service is sufficient.

I had the shrimp biryani which was excellent.  The portions are large and they have the best bread and rice.  I think both places have a very similar, if not the same, menu.

This is a better choice if you don't want to rush through your meal or have to hover over diners to snag an available table and still enjoy a delicious kabob.  But when you hear people gush about how awesome Kabob Palace is they're referring to the one with the yellow awning.

You know those nights when you just can't figure out what it is you want for dinner? You know you don't want to cook, but you don't really feel like fast food or carry-out either, and all of the routine options sound boring. For me, those are the nights that I end up at Kabob Palace Family Restaurant. Kabob Palace has two locations side by side, the newer more mainstream restaurant and the older original, supposedly more "authentic" carry out next door. For some reason (probably because I did not realize the difference at first) I have always ordered carry out from the restaurant side. Although I've never ate in, the restaurant is small but clean and pleasant, and usually has a decent amount of patrons. Everytime I stop in to pick up my meal to go, I swear that next time we'll sit and order from the dining room.

For dinner for me and my boyfriend to share, I usually opt for their gyro (which I must have) and one other meal which I try to mix up and test something new. I've tried lamb, chicken, beef, and seafood dishes of all kinds - kabobs, Karahi, Biryani. I can't say I've been adventurous enough to try the lamb brain or goat. Of course, I can never remember the names of what I've liked the most in the past, and usually just end up guessing at something on the menu. Although some items have been better than others, I don't think I've ever had something I didn't like. (Tip: if you are cautious about spicy food, make sure to ask how hot what you're ordering is. My boyfriend and I disagree on the definition of "too spicy", and he's loved it all, but some have been aaalmost too hot for me.)

Although they are more oily than healthy, the veggie sides are reeeeally good... I love the chickpeas, the okra, and the eggplant. Meals are served with a huge pita which is delish dipped in the cucumber sauce it comes with, or used to sop up the admittedly greasy sides.

Ordering out from Kabob Palace is quick and easy, its relatively inexpensive, and the food is great... different from my usual home-cooked cuisine as well as my regular go-to takeout choices. The location is convenient if you're in South Arlington (although the parking can sometimes be a pain) and the staff is super-friendly, too.

I come here A LOT.  2-3 times a month and no, i'm not ethnic afghan/pakistan.  They recently went back to the original mgmt, but the chicken and lamb karai (curry) is really good!

The prices have risen slightly since I started going more and it has that cozy "hole in the wall" perspective, but i'm comfortable.

There's the 24-hour kabob place, I call that the "diryt kabob place" has better chicken kabob, but it's the same owners.

also, to clarify the parking-- just park anywhere it says "kabob palace" and you won't get towed.  it's CVS that does all the towing; not kabob palace.  they told me they could really care less.

This is the family, non 24 hour version of its 24 hour hole-in-a-wall brother that's right next door.  They are owned by the same people as the Kabob Palace but this family restaurant version is exactly what it says it is.  It's a sit down restaurant featuring a buffet and table service, and it is perfect for the kids, or hole-in-the-wall-adverse family members.  They even have two little rooms that seat 6 privately if you don't want to let the whole restaurant to hear your family's business.  Still the same tasty kabobs, curry's, Afghan bread, mango lassi, etc.  Service was fantastic.

i want you to stop sniveling about "crossing the river"--its the potomac, not the freaking atlantic ocean, and  i want you to come here and eat. yes, it is in arlington, or alexandria, or somewhere--but it is less suburban than what dupont/logan/shaw has become. but i digress, cause this aint no  yuppie-bashing party, this ain't no  gentrification-critiquing disco,  and i'm not fooling around. it is AFGHANI food, made by real live AFGHANIS, oooh. screamingly tasty.  MOM,! COME QUICK! ITS ETHNIC! i get some eggplant thing and some other chick pea thing and the bread and a salad, but you , you get what you want. you're the one who crossed the river.

This review is solely for their lunch buffet, but I don't think it is possible for food to be more disgusting.  Seriously, it is a 180 from the deliciousness that is next door at the original.  Mediocre quality, excessively oily, and after giving it two chances am certain I will never go back.  In fact, the only positive I can see is that if you drive a bio-diesel, get it to go and you'll have fuel for a month.  If this is Afghani food, you should tell that to the folks up the road at Afghan Restaurant, because they're making the goodness and it is nothing at all like this slop.

I have to agree with Joe W. that the worst thing this place can do is compare to it's own restaurant next door. The 24 hour place is fantastic and the kabobs are great. This lunch buffet leaves a lot to be desired. I tried it twice since I thought maybe the first time was a fluke. The options are limited and they didn't even offer the chick peas either time and the only chicken option was bone in. I will continue to patronize the carry out version but have no interest in having the buffet again.
