Only been there once to see my friends play, but I think this place could get bigger.  They book a wide variety of music.  I thought that for a small place it was well laid out, with the bar down the length of the building and the music on the connecting side room.  The sound guy was responsive, which is more than you can expect of some places these days, and the bartender was helpful in picking out something to drink.

Small, but nice and intimate bar with a dance floor that pulls good events weekly (location of Bootie).

Edit 12/7/2005: This place is changing hands and thus the name will change to Annie's Social Club. It was bought by the people that own Annie's Cocktails, also in SOMA.

A great place to play if you're a small rock band- their sound guy's really helpful and seems to remember everyone who's ever played there.  The layout of the place works really well too, with a wall that separates half the bar from the stage/hall section, so people who want to talk can still do so.  One pet peeve is their men's bathroom lacks a mirror (not sure what's up with the women's).  P.S. They have a pool table now.

The layout is excellent (a wall that divides the dance area from the bar and pool table), DJ Adrian is amazing and the drinks aren't bad. The negatives? The place is one step from being a dump, and the doorman can go to Hell. I should know, because he wouldn't allow me in on my 21st birthday and said I had to wait 24 hours to gain entrance. My retort? I gave him a hearty "F**k You", flipped him the bird and took my posse somewhere else!

I ONLY gave this place 4 stars cause it's the home of my monthy fave dancing outlet...Bootie.  www.bootiesf.com
The place is a crap in the wall but when DJ Adrian is spinning, you just can't help but ignore the setting and love the scene.

Nicely laid-out bar & music venue... live indie rawk bands 85% of the week. A $5 cover for the live rawk on any given night? Cheap beer? That's a good deal right there, man.

I could be an asshole and swear alot, but i wont. Like a pimp, i do have some legitimate bitches, but ill try to be fair. I didnt get his name, but the doorguy was WAAAAY too fucking self-important for my creamy sense of humor. Him and his rules. Whatevs. Dude...its a local band playing. I can eat more pieces of fried chicken that the number of people in here. Sound sucks. The soundguy, ever so ernest and generally happy about everything, never got it right. I felt bad for the bands that the sound sucked. Especially because the bands were really fucking GOOD. We even told him three times the guitars were too low. I even offered to get back there and show him how to move the lever in the UP direction. Cue doorguy. It seems like it could be a cool place, but maybe i was there on a bad night. Who knows. Might be a good danceplace to listen to mashups of fucking Kiss and Fitty, but until they learn multitrack levels, lay off the live stuff. Youll just make it worse.

i saw pip skid and mcenroe here for my first hip hop show on like a wed. night. there was really nothing popping off in here. it was pretty desolate.  a few random dancers and maybe a lebso or 2.  i had guiness on tap which always looks delightful. i guess it could be fun if it were packed. but i wasn't impressed.

i love the layout - a separate room on the side for dancing keeps the bar/lounge area people from getting stepped on.
