Great homestyle food, friendly, attentive service, in a warm fun atmosphere. Not that bad of a wait for a Saturday. They have a few tables outside. The decor adds a lot of fun personality to the place with all the interesting posters.
- Beignets: big! sweet, good with the raspberry jam, love the powered sugar on top
- Special Scramble: tomatoes, mushrooms, Swiss = delicious. all my favorite ingredients for eggs
- Grits: plain, thick, still good
- Buttermilk Pancakes: just okay, fluffy, tastes like anywhere else
They serve up a slammin' Cobb Salad -- even tho I order it sans the chesse --meh my palette isn't really into all the funk.
The service is pretty rapid fire, folks are always ready and kind. Gotta love a place that has that old world feel... but because I am forgetful, I was disappointed again to discover they were cash only.
No worries, ATM next door -- except those asinine fees...
I did however get some [1985] edition $20 dollar bills from that ATM machine next door. I'm going to frame one.
Craving an oyster po boy and everything else was closed. Late hours on a weekday are helpful.
Boo hoo hoo!!! No moh oysters said the waitress. I opted for the shrimpy po boy and hush puppies -- on a fried kick. It was good, but I've had better po boys and hush puppies. Unfortunately the food was underseasoned.
Perhaps they're better for brunch. The SO had been there before and enjoyed it, so I chalk it up to being an off night.
You can't go wrong when a cafe is made just for you. This is the go to spot whenever you feel like have breakfast for lunch.
I was not a huge fun of the beignet's but they are good. It was one of those things you have to try once. Be warned, these things are HUGE.
The Greg's Scramble with chicken apple sausage is delicious. I usually saturate my omelets with ketchup, but this scramble had a variety of flavors making me want more.
My favorite meal here so far is the chicken sandwich special. This chicken sandwich is topped with pico de gallo that gives it a unexpected twist. Pair it up with a baked potato and you'll leave happy and full.
Just for me? BOOOYAH!
Been here at least 5 times (only for bfast though) and tried a bunch of stuff. LOVE the BLTs, gregs scramble, and the BEIGNETSSSS. Bring on the powdered sugar!
The wait is a tad horrendous but they give you free coffee and it's almost always sunny and warm outside.
Love the waiter with greasy hair, funny glasses and suspenders (well most of the time he has them on).
The portions are huge and the ambiance is inviting. Babies, doggies, everything is allowed but cell phones.
There is something for everyone. Made just for you. and ME :)
I live around the corner from this place, so maybe the novelty of Just For You wore off a long time ago for me. Or maybe $10 for a diner breakfast is just a bit steep, and although it's been a long time since I had to wait for a table here (when I do go, it's before 9:30 in order to beat the crowds) I don't think the brunch is worth a 20 minute wait.
If you're forced to wait, you might as well consider the breakfast around the corner at Serpentine.
Otherwise, if you're patient and in need of a filling breakfast, and want some fresh-baked whole wheat bread, or have a hankering for beignets, this is the place for you.
Just For You is a nice spot to visit if you are in Dogpatch. I have never been floored by any of their food, but never I've been badly disappointed, either. Parking is difficult in the area, especially during lunchtime.
I am taking off one star because the service is spotty. One time I went to the counter to place a to-go order and the guy behind the counter didn't acknowledge me....he didn't ask if I needed help, if I had been helped, if I'd like any help....I thought it was quite rude. But other times the service has been okay. I think it's just....spotty. The prices are on the high side, too considering what they serve.
Love love love this place. We came at a popular brunch time and had to wait about 35 minutes which worked out ok because there is a Blue Bottle Coffee store right down the block to hold you over.
The restaurant interior is very retro and homey. We shared some amazing beignets to start and everyone loved their breakfast plates. Service was excellent. Also they have some kind of frequent meal program where if you purchase 10 or so meals, you get one free!!! It was about an average price for brunch in the city.
Go. It's worth the wait.
This place falls squarely in my category of food that I don't make at home. I like having options other than just the same old egg, meat, potato and bread nonsense. I like some variety in my boom boom, that's why you'll always find the grits AND cornbread on my plate.
"Grits: They're the pasty white stuff you had...in prison"
The variety of options are fantastic for the specials as well. Usually fresh and unlike other restaurants, not likely to be found repeated on the menu the next time you're there. So if you see it get it NOW!
"No Greg hasn't worked here in a while, but he sure could scramble"
And yeah, the beignet's are good, but don't get them because I said so. Get them because you want deep fried dough covered in sugar, and dynamo donut is too far away.
I tried coming here on a Saturday a few weeks ago, based on a friend's glowing recommendation, only to be driven away by the long wait and cash-only policy.
Today: success! Apparently 11:30 on a Wednesday is a much less popular time to belly up to JFY. I felt like I could have ordered 95% of the menu and been happy, but I limited myself to a beignet and the Cowgirl breakfast: eggs, two pancakes, and a choice of link sausage or bacon.
The beignet was astounding. I'd been expecting a delicate little powderpuff, but the powdered-sugar-coated delight that arrived at the table was gargantuan. Still warm from the fryer, the beignet was the perfect partner for the raspberry jam kept on the table. Together they made the world's most fantastic jelly donut.
My cornmeal pancakes (they also have buttermilk) were also amazing. Again, I was surprised by the portion. I'd been expecting some silver-dollar-sized pancakes, but these were more like salad-plate-sized ones. And the well-browned flapjacks resulted in mouthfuls of toasted corn flavor, made even better with a drizzling of maple syrup.
If I lived in the area, I'd be a regular. As it is, I'll be dragging my SF friends here as much as possible from now on. :)
On one particularly fine "snow day" from work (wherein leaking ammonia closed our offices) some very hotstuffs and I decided brunch was in order. It was gorgeous out - scorching actually; and we had no work! Woo!
We came for brunch, got a good chuckle over the signage and menu quips, ogled a bunch of kind of hot giant bikers, and ate a bunch.
Tasty vittles folks - recommended.
Worth the hype! We had been scouring yelp looking to find THE hottest breakfast spot in the Bay area to kick-start our vacation and we did not leave disappointed.
The outside and interior are nothing to get excited about but it is quite quaint and cozy inside. But most importantly it smelled and looked fantastic. Be forewarned my friends....cell phones are NOT welcomed here!
We kicked things off with 3 beignets between us. These are NOT munchkin sized. More like softball-sized. Extremely hot, fresh and deliriously delicious. I highly recommend slathering on the raspberry jam even if I couldn't quite convince my companion to do the same. (She is a bit crazysexycool)
I went with the Cowgirl breakfast (what an emasculating name for a manly meal) including buckwheat pancakes. The late, great Buckwheat himself would have declared them O'Tay! Pancakes fantastic, eggs good but the bacon....oh the bacon is to die for.
She had the Fritatta of the decade and loved it. Said it tasted like a delicious pizza. The bacon was so good that my lovely companion, a self-professed vegetarian, had 3 slices and easily could have knocked out 10 tasty pieces!!! As a side note, ALL bacon in Cali is delicious. What do they do to their little piggies out here???
When the food arrived it was so much and overwhelming we were certain there was no way in hell we could eat it all. But we were wrong, it was soon devoured. She even had to remove her leather jacket to dig in further and cool off her warm, happy belly.
Kudos to the cooks and the very hip and efficient waitress. But what's with the cash only policy??? It's 2009 buy a credit card machine you crazy hippies!
Two enthusiastic thumbs up from the two deliciously decadent divas.
NOMSSSSSS!!!!!!!!
This place is SOOO good! The beignets, yes, were awesome. HUGE, and awesome with powdered sugar kissing my nose on a warm Saturday morning. Sweet, hot and light these marvelous beignets were. Great with the jam jelly in a jar at the counters... jelly donut, anyone?
I had the Eggs (something). Their variation of Eggs Bennie anyways (3 ways), but mine had bacon and tomato (one of my favorite combos).
I had the Eggs Bennie on homemade bread (that's right). Thick white toast (although now I know they do cinnamon raisin bread, I shall have it on that next time to satisfy the sweet savory cravings of my tongue (which I suppose implies I will be there again. :))
Anyways, the hollaindaise was awesome, thick, and perfecto- wonder if they use lime? Savory enough, not too heavy, nice acid. Good balance. They poach their eggs really well too.
Down home damn good goodness. Umm... what else.
Oh, grits were okay. Nothing exciting. Like boring oatmeal in a bowl with cheese on top. You can get that or the homefries and I recommend going with the homefries- red potatoes, skin on, pan fried and perhaps roasted. Delish.
OOH. They have hangtown fry. I want. I want.
xxoo
Grub-IN! And just a short walk away. Y'all suck for keeping this a secret from me for so long! They have stevia sweetener and whole wheat bread for the healthy girl in me, but they stay true to someone's southern roots as well with the perfect grits and creamy hollandaise sauce. The green-eyed baby daddy loved his crab cake benedict (and he used to live in New Orleans) and my southern granny would have been proud that I ordered and loved the grits with my bacon and tomato benedict.
The staff was great as well. I guess I was expecting Mission-style ennui, but everyone was very accommodating, even of our friend's stroller and and bambino.
I am going every weekend if Will T lets me! I'm dying to try the oatmeal pancakes.
The food was pretty good...
Is the service normally so bad???
Really good basic home cooked breakfast food. The beignets are wonderful (whats not to like, fried bread with powdered sugar). The menu is to the point, but you have your choice of a lot of sides. The staff bend over backwards to give you good service in the midst of the madness. We ate at the counter and watched the fry cooks workout, what a show. Everything was hot, fresh, and tasty. The wait was 35 minutes at prime time so next time I will go a little earlier or maybe on a weekday. Couldn't figure out why we were stuffed before our eggs were gone. Could it have been the beignet appetizer?
I love this place. I want to marry it. The beignets are awesome - always made to order and piping hot. I always get the hangtown fry (scrambled eggs, bacon, oysters and onions). Pure perfection. Service is really good too.
I feel guilty, because this review may well stampede even more folks to this place. But there's a few things the other reviews leave out that I think you should know.
Yes, the begnies are wonderful, possibly the best in the city, and yes the breakfasts are homie and consistent and worth waiting in line for.
But honest, kids, there are other gems in this necklace. If you love pecan pie, or even just like it a bit now and again, get a slice here. If you don't want it now (understandable after an awesome blue scramble), get a slice or two to take home. Like a Jewish boy looking for the perfect deli in the city, I am a southern boy who reveres pecan pie. A slice from Just For You is a bit of heaven. Yes, it is a cavity monster, and I'm not recommending a daily diet, but, really.
Also, the biscuits have been under-praised. A southern cook knows how mysterious and magical the best biscuit recipe is. I am a pretty good cook, and have given biscuits a go a time or two. Total failures. The successful biscuit baker at Just For You is a magician.
In case you didn't know, this place is owned and run by the same person who had The Crescent Cafe on Haight Street many moons ago (the first time I ever waited in line to eat), had a place on Potrero Hill for a while, until rent rates drove her out, when she moved to the Dogpatch long before anyone knew it would be the next SF hot spot. So we have a savvy business woman who demands great food from her staff and seems to know where the next hot spot will be.
Lest you think I am deeply sotted and biased, let me share with you a few failings, as I see them.
There are service problems on weekends. Honestly, I feel it's understandable. There are people standing outside for 15 to 45 minutes waiting to eat. I don't think it's rude to the people inside if the servers try to prod the diners to eat and leave. You're eating at a place people stand in line for, what do you expect? Eat your food, and catch up with your friend or check emails later. I can't imagine anyone but an arrogant person could feel "rushed" under these circumsatanses.
What's less forgivable are the recent soups, which were stellar for years. I'm a soup lover, so this is a big disappointment to me. "Cream of" is the sign to abandon ship. Creamed squash soup is likely to be a stew of probably good ingredients unmarried by the cooking process. It tastes as if the cook put everything in a processor and dumped it in a broth to save time. A good cook would have softened the ingredients first, then blended them to a smooth soup. The current result is a gritty mess. Someone should taste these soups. Either fix this, or take those soups off the menu. Anyone can make chicken tortillo or turkey/veg, boring as they might be. Take it up a bit, as you used to, or stick with your soup chef's limitations.
Finally, this a great place worth going out of your way for. I don't stand in line for breakfast, but if you do, this is one of the most rewarding lines you will wait in. If you like bacon, order it added to something, it's great. The lunches and dinners are every bit as good as the breakfasts. I eat here often, to my great joy. You should, too.
Take a moment to explore the neighborhood while you're there. It's the next big thing for a reason.
come here for dinner. I live in the neighborhood and looove the idea of having a cute, friendly, homey little cafe right around the corner. Morning times, however, can be a bit of a wait for a table and ya, like most breakfast joints in town, you do get rushed a tad.
When my boyfriend and I went there for dinner, there were four other people in the place. We had two waitresses helping us, chatting with us, totally sweet gals and very helpful. I'm pretty sure they gave me the biggest piece of lasagna I have ever been served, and for two meals it was like 23 bucks or something ridiculously reasonable. No rushage. No poor service. Just happy bellys.
Charming menu, cool, friendly staff, and delicious food. Went for breakfast, decided on the chili scarmble with cornbread and grits - and it exceeded expectations. 'Just For You' filled me up, cheered me up and sent me on my way.
So delish- been here a few times and it's always good. I'm reading the reviews and my mouth is watering in fond remembrance! And they've got sweetest waitstaff EVER...that's it, I'm going TOMORROW!
So solid. I love eating meals for breakfast that I am too lazy to cook for myself. This is where the huevos rancheros and crab cake bennie enter my life.
Why are poached eggs so magical? And how do they always make them here with the perfect yolk texture? Yes, I love me some sloppy yolks. I always go for the vegetarian red sauce which is so flavorful. Not super spicy but super good chili flavor.
Crab cake is really fresh and made with good size chunks of meat. I ask for the creamy sauce on the side and usually use a tiny bit but mostly hot sauce. My fiance swears by the grits (they'll bring you brown sugar if you're nice) but I always opt for the fruit because it's not just stupid cantaloupe. We're talking real chunks of berries, bananas, grapes and well okay there is some melon.
Anyway, the coffee is no frills but man does it get the job done. I had 2 cups on an empty tummy and I was very, very awake to say the least. Anyway. I will be back and am excited to check out their happy hour and a dainty pint of mimosa goodness. mmm mmm
What bumps these guys up to 5 is that their service is fast and they're super cool. I was in on a not busy morning waiting for a friend to show up for 35 mins. That's right, I sat by myself reading a magazine slurping coffee in a booth for 35 mins and they were super cool to me and kept refilling my coffee. I appreciated it because it was still foggy and a little chilly. Thanks guys!
The huevos rancheros here are TO DIE FOR! The fact that they serve breakfast all day long also makes them one of my favorite SF staples. I haven't tried their lunch or dinner yet, because I simply can't pull myself away from their amazing breakfast menu. I know, I know... I am an addict, but at least I admit it! Eat here and we can discuss our rehab plans over a big plate of beignets :)
The food borders on bad (beware especially of the coffee - it's atrocious), the menu has a little more variety than a Denny's menu, and it costs twice as much as you should pay.
I wish I could like this place. It's one of two morning options in this area of Dogpatch. That's probably why it gets such good ratings: there is no competition.
The service is fine. You can't blame the crappiness on the staff. They're cool.
Sorry, it's just not worth the money. I'd rather have a McMuffin & hash brown from McD's, or just go w/o breakfast at all.
Get here early but the wait is worth it. Nothing fancy except the great food and friendly service.
Regardless of which fad diet you are on or which triathlon you are training for, the beignets are a must.
I wish it were a little closer to me so I could walk there and is the only reason I don't go more often.
Excellent in every way.
- Good coffee while we wait. (there are always cute dogs outside too)
- Delicious huevos rancheros with green chili and chorizos. Give their chorizos a spin -- they are really good.
- To die for beignets. So so good.
- Friendly service.
- Great prices. $4 for three large beignets.
Would take the caltrain up just to get brunch here!
This is our FAVORITE Breakfast joint EVER!!! The servers rule, and have given us the best recommendations ever! The food is great and reasonable priced. We never had a problem with waiting for a table or sitting at the counter, and really, it never seemed like anyone else waiting did either. Our meal: The Greg Scramble with Chirrizo and the huervos red sauce on the side. Two coffees and two mimosas. The Apple Sausage RULES and the coffee is great! Anytime anyone asks us where to get breakfast in the city...Just for You is the place we recommend. We've not yet been here for dinner, but I'm sure its fabulous! Also, the atmosphere is right up our alley. I would LOVE to live in the Dogpatch and be one of those Just for You early morning regulars :D
Breaksfast was excellent. The french donuts were amazing...My only gripe is that they dont take credit cards. If you are going to charge 10$ for a breakfast, at least take plastic....Kinda annoying to have to go next door to the liquor store to use an ATM.
It must be a sign that I *had* to come here today! It MUST be!!!
So I'm driving down 280 from San Francisco and I ran into rush hour traffic. I got off at Mariposa just so I can take a quickie shortcut down 3rd St. to get to the next exit @ Cesar Chavez. (Yeah, THAT crowded!!!) As I was driving down, I remember a soul food restaurant and remember it being near 22nd St. So at 22nd St. I made a right turn and started looking around. The Beignet sign at "Just For You" cafe flashed before me and I thought this was the soul good place. (This is Sign #1! And It wasn't the soul food place I was looking for -- that place was just past 22nd St. on 3rd St. That said...) I never tried a beignet before but I had heard all the drooling stories from Yelp reviews (I don't know if it's this place or another place...) 5 minutes later, I found parking right across the street from this place!!! (Sign #2!)
When I was sitting at my table, I had mentioned that I was told I had to try a beignet. The waitress asked "Do you want one or 3?" I realize now that I probably SHOULD have asked how big those things are instead of just ordering 3! Those beignets are HUGE!!! It's the size of a POP TART... maybe even slightly bigger? And topped with TONS of snowy powdered sugar goodness in which most ended up on the pair of skating pants I was wearing. (Not to worry! It was going straight to the laundry afterwards...)
I also came at Happy Hour... and for $2, I got myself 2 "crispy tacos". It looked like tacquitos but crispy shell and topped with good homemade salsa!!! YUM YUM!!!
Next time I want to break my diet though, I'm headin' for the Hangtown Fry!!! ;)
We went here for Sunday brunch on the recommendation of our server at Nopa - we thought for sure it'd be great given that Nopa is one of our favorite restaurants. Wrong! First sign something was amiss, no espresso drinks and very watery coffee. Food was mediocre, I had to pay $3.50 extra for real syrup and felt kind of gyped. Even though their website states that they use organic ingredients whenever available, our server said the eggs were not - may be a small thing, but why say that on your website?
Cash or check only, and its not exactly clearly largely advertised. The ATM is next door and charges a $4 fee.
I really liked the coffee at the little cafe up the street, I think it's called Piccino.
I love this place!! We went here for Breakfast on Saturday morning. We were 4 and 1/2 people and waited about 5 minutes! I guess we were lucky.
I ordered the veggie Omelet and got grits as a side!!! Where can you get grits these days??? Anyway it was really good. The omelet came with salsa, asparagus, onions and some other veggies. The Grits were tummy warming and the service was great even though it was super busy.
I wish I could go here for breakfast at least 3 times a week! Did I mention that I loved it!!!!!!!!!!
This place was pretty good for brunch. I tried it out for the first time this past Sunday. It was busy but the wait was not that bad.
The food was ok. I got just got eggs and potatoes which is pretty basic. My boyfriend got one of their scrambles though and it was kinda watery. I also had a mimosa and felt they may have skimped on the champagne a little bit. We tried the cornmeal pancakes, never had those before, and enjoyed them.
They have complimentary coffee while you wait for your table which was nice.
Overall, this place was ok. I'd go back if I were around it but I wouldn't make a special trip just to come.
Just for You Cafe is a really great "local's place". Newcomers are welcome of course. :) The only thing on the menu I'm not a fan of are the omlettes. It's like an egg blanket with steamed insides (you know.. when they use too much egg? ) So -1 star for that. Everything else that I've had has been yummy. The scrambles, breakfast burritos and the home made salsas are really special. The beignets are a terrific way to start off breakfast with just one or three to share with friends.
The place gets busy past about 11am so expect a wait, but it usually goes pretty fast (they're FAST with their orders). Coffee is decent and the home made breads (they're all home made I think except for the muffins and bagels) are thick and yummy. Try the raisin bread, I recommend it. Sometimes service can slow down a bit when they get busy, but hey... it's a local's place.. and it's inexpensive. But bring cash, they don't take cards. oh and the mimosa's are served in big cups.. god bless.. :-)
Just For You Café puts up a clever front of being a hipster hangout - but I'm here to tell you it's not. Really. It's this wonderfully comfortable, casual and delicious little eatery full of snarky signs, and if it were any closer to my home I would be approximately the size of Wisconsin within about, oh, a month. It's as if they took the traditional diner options, added some high-end foodie touches, spiced it all with a southern flair and created a menu that causes actual angst because you have to pick just ONE dish. And the coffee - my true decider for any breakfast place - is strong and plentiful.
I am so glad it's a long bus ride away. That's all I can say.
I love my share of greasy spoons but this place was by far the WORST breakfast I've ever had from east to west coast. Went for a long run Sunday morning and was famished but still was unable to stomach the food. We sat in the back near the kitchen and the malodorous wafts of air from within was stomach turning. Orange juice tasted like dishwater. Chicken sausages were dripping with grease. Oversized cake slice of scone was dry and unpalatable. Home fries were mushy and not crisp.
There are too many places better and more economical. Don't waste your time.
I used to go to park chow for breakfast, but now its "Just for you cafe". Beignets like everyone else says is a must. Go ahead and order them right when you sit down so you can munch on them while you are deciding what to eat. Oh, and get the pint of mimosa. Its not all you can drink like some other places, but, dang a pint is enough for a sunday morning. I gotta work on Monday.
So far everything Ive had on the menu has been great and brings me back. Ive been trying the specials. I see people getting breakfast burritos and stuff. iono...
Be prepared for a wait on the weekends. Its not a big place, but there is free coffee while you wait.
Four easy stars earned for BY (before yelp) brunch and burgers. I remember things were a little on the pricey side, but you got a mountain of delicious food.
Back this weekend to sample the parfait, almost needed to ask for help carrying it home. The granola and lowfat plain yogurt were typical, but the fruit, wow. Strawberries, apples, bananas and more - it was a massive serving, and I loved every bite.
Extra points for superstar DJ Fred Everything nonchalantly eating right out front. Is this a great city or what?
I love Just For You.
I love that they have longanisa (Filipino sausage) on their brunch menu. And it was tasty, too! I love that their cornbread is sweet but not overly sweet. I love that they have outdoor tables, which are perfect when dining with your pooch. I love that you can help yourself with coffee outside while waiting for your table. And I love that it's so close to our loft in the Dogpatch.
We will be back for more. Like the beignets and the cornmeal pancakes.
I was pleased to learn this wasn't one of those "cool on the outside, not tasty on the inside" place. First, they knew I was shy when requesting a pre-seated coffee cup outside, and tailored their sign accordingly, almost insisting I ask for a paper cup. We ordered the pillow-sized beignets and I had the pile of homefries with veggies and eggs. When I ordered the homefry dish, I was worried that it was going to be a giant pile of potatoes with weird stale veggies on the side, but I was served a pleasing minimum amount of potatoes to the ratio of fresh stir-fry that was placed on top. I was full, but not in a terrible "I just ate a lot of potatoes" kind of way. And the melted cheese really glued everything together tastefully.
One "complaint" would have to be insane amount of powdered sugar on the beignets.
Every time I open my wallet I see my frequent buyer card for this place, and I get a little sad, distance defying growl in my stomach. oh! for Beignetsssssss with chicorry coffeeee and something spicy on a plate.... (And annoying stereotypes of san franciscans, bantering on over- knowledgeably about innovative child raising strategies they are deploying on their terrified looking urchins.. but hey... it's san francisco)
