If you never had lunch at Just 4 Us you need to try it out. Chicken Salad is amazing. and they are so supportive of the Ferndale Community. EVERYONE is welcomed!! Carol

I remember the days. Making the trek to Ferndale as a high school student. Just 4 Us served an important role in my early development, being somewhere that I could go and grab a cookie and coffee and watch and observe.
I used to bring friends in, we'd buy books, LGBT trinkets, gifts, etc. One year I did almost all of my Christmas shopping here. The owners are always nice and friendly, patrons hit or miss, but hey, that's anywhere.
Now enter Just 4 Us of 2011. This place has had a really, really sad decline. This community based shop that once existed and serving as a meeting spot for members of the community is no more.
The new face of J4U is just a small step above a sleezy porn shop that you would find on the side of the highway. Over the last few years, they have been slowly bringing in more and more of the sex shop items, where the porn and other paraphernalia consume at least 50% of the store.
And hey, don't see me as a prude, because that is hardly the case. I always appreciated these items that were offered here, as it was done tastefully and it was not overwhelming -- but you knew where to go when you needed something.
I was in last week and was really disturbed. In the front of the store, they have tons of leather-wear, as soon as you walk in. Sure this is not my scene, but seeing the items is not the issue, but them being the first item you see when you walk in is not a pleasant site.
They have always had underwear for sale, which was great. I have bought many a pair here. But, also close to the front, they now have a rack full of used underwear. These are used fruit of the looms and others that likely came from a salvation army somewhere. I'm sorry, but this is just disgusting. Considering that 10 steps away you can order a panini and a latte, these products should be rethought.
Above the rack there is a rather sleezy sign suggesting a non-wear use for men.
If J4U wants to be a porn/ sex shop, then be it. But stop selling sandwiches and coffee.
A few years ago, J4U was a place that I loved going to. It was a place that defined the greater-Detroit LGBT community. I felt comfortable, and welcomes. It was warm. While some of these feelings still remain, overall I am very disheartened by the direction the owners have allowed the store to go, and really hope that they can one day get it back to the charm that it used to have. -

It may be a homo-centric store, but they love their heteros, too! Love for everyone! -
