One of the Business' Favorite Reviews What's This?
Aaah...a Berkeley favorite. Here's how I do the math:
good beer+good food+ good prices+live music+chill atmosphere= GOOD TIMES!
The Cassiopeia pizza is good, among some others. Salads are good.
Pomegranate cider is good. So is the the Jupiter Hefe, and if they have it, Death and Taxes.
Having been to Jupiter several times for drinks, I didn't dip into the food menu until last Friday--we went for their Hefe, which I enjoy--it's light, a bit fruity--I can't even pretend to have a real palate for beer, but, it is nice to drink, and if you can snag a seat outback in their ample outdoor garden, do, it's lovely to listen to live music and relax.
For din we split a large house salad (standard, well portioned) and 3 types of pizza. The carnivores went for the Io, which is a pesto base w/ chicken, kalamatas, and onions. Word on the street was "delish". I went for the mushroom pizza (odysseus) as well as the Xanthia, which has sliced potatoes, garlic, mozz and ricotta cheeses. Skipped the added bacon.
The Xanthia was wonderful, and the ricotta was a great touch--shroom pizza needed salt--the fontina didn't really carry any flavor. Warm, doughy crust--carbohydrate delight.
Our waiter was perfectly fine, although he wasn't too active--it was a Friday, so it was completely expected that he was a bit MIA. If you go during peak hours, be prepared to wait--it took abt 40 min to get the pizza, which they warned us about. Didn't mind, we were simply killing time until hitting up the new Twilight masterpiece, so all in all, a delightful evening.
Large groups can be rough, as conversation often requires a raised voice, but it's pretty good people watching, good beer, and better than expected pub fare.
To drink: $12
To eat: $14
Both: $20
I made a note to review this place, and wrote a comment in that note: "Ra-Ra-Rasputin!" Yeah, that's right, they have Old Rasputin on nitro--all the time. It's 10% abv, not-too-sweet imperial stout deliciousness with a perfectly smooth finish. Should you not be into beer, there's good cider. If you're not there to drink (why not?), the pizza is uniformly excellent and freshly made. Favorites include Cassiopeia and Xanthia.
The service here is also a really positive point. If they mess up, they cop to it, but don't screw up too often. Extra points to the staff for being anomalously cute. Seating is cozy and ambiance is usually pretty good.
Summary: Good for the lunch, good for the beer.
Cons:
very LOUD... be prepared to yell if you want speak
slow service, took forever to make and bring out a pizza...possibly because it was a busy night (?)
no refills on soda
Pros:
yummy food (pizza)
nicely decorated patio
waiter was nice whenever she did come around
probably a better place to go if you're with a big party... probably not so good for an intimate date.
Drank a whole lot of good beer here. Great selection.
Yeah, ditto on what Eddy said:
Food: Pizzas are really tasty. Salads are huge, fresh and tasty (I went for the large garden salad, as I need my daily dose of fiber).
Service: Great , food comes out REALLY really quickly.
Prices: Very reasonable.
Just a great place to grab food, catch up with good friends, sit outside near the fire pit, listen to some chill live music, nosh on tasty pizzas, breathe that fresh nor-cal air, and enjoy life. What more could you ask for?
Great option for dinner if you are staying at the Hotel Shattuck nearby.
Mercury pizza was pretty amazing & they've got 10 beers on tap.
Try the artichoke dip as well, the garlic & cheese will satisfy your taste buds.
Live music to accompany your culinary experience.
Definitely a great spot to eat if you're up in Berkeley
Normally I'd say fire pit + alcohol = bad idea.
But Jupiter's patio wouldn't feel the same without it, even though I do feel like someday I'm going to go nose first into that flame trap. The more beer I sample the more creative I want to get, last time I asked the waitress if I could bring marshmallows to make smores. She laughed and didn't really say no so I'm just gonna go ahead and take that as a yes. Maybe I'll pitch a tent, toss in some foil wrapped potatoes. Or use a blanket and send smoke signals to my homies, telling them to come get their drink on.
The whole patio rocks, not just the mesmerizing fire pit. On a nice day or warm evening, I could sit here for hours. The outdoor patio is aesthetically pleasing with a lot of plants for that garden feel, lots of seating, and nights where there's live music the vibe is superb. Just sit back, try some different beers or pop a bottle of wine with friends. If they had a full bar I'd be happier, but back to the fire pit maybe that's not such a good idea...
You did not hear this from me, but rumor has it near the back entrance off and on there might be some people sampling herbal remedies if you catch my drift. Burning some trees? Celebrating that four to the twenty? If this sounds like gibberish to you then don't you worry your pretty little head about it, this is all simply rumor anyway..
Mmmm... the "Theokleia" pizza makes me salivate just thinking about it. Okay, so... this would normally be a five-star place for me, except for the following (which don't overwhelm the otherwise great food and beer):
1. Out of stock beer: why oh why are you ALWAYS out of the IPA? There hasn't been a time that I've come here and not immediately been told that two or three beers are out tonight.
2. Wait time: expect to wait anywhere from 30 to 45 min from your pizza if you come at anytime other than like, middle of the afternoon
3. Hit or miss waitstaff: usually good, though I think they're understaffed -- their waitstaff seems like it's managing way too many tables.
Even with that, I keep coming back!
I've been coming to this place since before I turned 21 just for the food, and now that I'm 23, the # of times I've come here has exponentially increased.I think it's time to give this place the review it deserves:
Jupiter's is the definition of 'COMFORT'.
When you're having a crappy day. Or if you wanna celebrate a small victory. Or simply wanna get together for a date, with a friend for a one-on-one, or with a small group of friends, this is the ultimate place to KICK-BACK..
Take a pint of their o-so-refreshing-fresh-from-the-tap Hefenweisen (or Honey Wheat) + a pint of goldfishes/pretzels + some of your favorite people and you INSTANTLY get a Friday! (In other words, every day is Friday here!..So the saying goes after 2-3 pints..!)
Their beers are top-notch.
And food-wise, everything is great and fresh until the very last call. I particularly enjoy their Two-Way-Hummus Plate and Apollo Pizza (artichokes!).
And the servers are always chill and attentive.
Then, take it alllllll out back near the out-door-fire pit underneath the stars with a random band/person playing/singing...and all your problems for the day drift away...
Brings a smile to my face =). Thank goodness it's in Bezerkely.
Perfect for hanging out in a lively atmosphere.
Jupiter is group friendly even when it gets crowded on a Friday night for a big Cal game the next day.
I haven't been to Jupiter in a while but it's still one of the more popular places along Shattuck. Since it's pretty close to campus, the prices are good. I wouldn't come here for a relaxing or quiet meal at all.
I'd recommend the lamb kebabs $10, two skewers of tender lamb, onions, and figs over a fresh Mediterranean salad and cous cous. (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) Along with the rib tips which were tender and had a real smoky flavor. (http://www.yelp.com/bi...)
Finish it off with their refreshing honey wheat when it's hot outside or a stout beer when it's cold and you are set buddy!
Good friends, good food, good beer = good times.
Oh, Jupiter. Why is your service SO SLOW?
Maybe it's because we were seated upstairs, but I kid you not, it took nearly forty minutes for our pizzas to come!
The pizza itself was great, though. Good enough to almost make me forget how long it took us to get the food.
We got the Xanthia and the Galileo. The Xanthia is covered in bacon, ricotta and mozzarella cheese, and potatoes. They definitely don't skimp on the bacon! Salty and good.
The Galileo is topped with artichoke hearts, spinach, and fresh tomatoes. A good balance with the bacon-covered Xanthia.
Everything on the pizza was delicious- cheese, toppings, and crust. But I can't get over how slow the service was!
Oh- and warning- the atmosphere is kind of romantic (dimly lit, candles, close seating). Romantic enough to make the dinner with even your girl friend semi-awkward (but also became the butt of nearly all of our jokes).
First time in this place... My girl isn't a big beer drinker but our waiter anthony insisted she try the PORTER, which he claimed was " perfect for a day like today". Turns out he was right, she loved it. I had the russian river damnation (also at our waiters recommendation). Went down smooth. The pepperoni pizza was good, but the beer was better. It seemed a little busy, but not too bad for a weekday afternoon.
I've had to boost up my review after returning here for the past two years. The drinks on tap have always been pretty consistent, service is definitely on point, live music outside in the back patio, and the ambiance is always lively. Thanks to Jake The Snake this is what's prompted me with a change of heart:
-1 Glass of Alagash White Ipa
-1 Glass of Lemonade
-1 Order of Xanthia Pizza; consists of: thin yukon gold potatoes, bacon, garlic, mozzarella, ricotta cheese, crushed red pepper, and herbs on an olive oil crust (description credit to jupiter dinner menu pdf.file)
-1 Side Order of Ranch
The Alagash was light and smooth, not as much bitterness compared to other IPAs I've tried in the past. Whereas the Pizza was perfect, not messy, thin, cheesy, and filled with crispy texture. The ranch was a perfect compliment and had the same quality of freshness as Barney's (Rockridge, Ca) for a sauce.
$31.00 worth of bliss, reminisce, and a jumpy folk band to boot. Next up...Venus restaurant, then any other Solar System theme related spot haha.

I like this place, it's like hanging out at someone's well kept backyard party. The service is attentive and surprisingly efficient despite the moderately large space and self-seating arrangement.
(+1 star) Deep house/reggae beats spinnin' in the background
(+1 star) Jupiter's helle lager
(+1 star) Large open patio
(+1 star) Heat lamps
(-1 star) FOOD: nothing special, at all.
(+1 star) Speedy service
Great place on a warm night. The indoor seating is not worth it. You want to be outside where the jazz is going on, with the propane fires over the pools of water.
Food is overpriced, but decent. Great place to bring a bunch of friends.
EXCELLENT food, service, beer, and atmosphere!
-1 star for the waitress saying, "IT'S A FEAST!!!!" to my slightly whiskey silly friend and I when she served us. My companion turned to me and asked exactly what I'd been thinking,
"She just called us fat, didn't she?"
WELL SHUCKS NOW.
Jupiter is a classic Berkeley stop. If you haven't been, GO. You won't be disappointed.
On a warm summery night, this is an ideal spot for outdoor dining and live music. The laid back atmosphere is the perfect setting for their menu. From pizzas to salads and sandwiches to house brewed beers, Jupiter's delivers. I've been a few times and everything I tried was awesome.
One note about the patio area: be prepared to camp out and wait till a table is available. It's kind of like musical chairs here-- you feel lucky when you finally get a seat!
Steep your troubles in a pint of Jupiter's Summer Session or Hefeweizen, wash it all down, you'll be fine in the morning.
The back patio is pretty big, with a fire pit and heat lamps for the chilly October nights. Lots of tables, great friendly atmosphere, but there are also the tables for two for a more intimate conversations. Ooh try out their pizza too, although they do take a while it comes out with a nice crisp crust with not so much sauce and mucho toppings, just the way I like it. I had the chicken pizza with chunks of chicken breasts and pesto sauce, mmm...
Right next to BART, easy access for tumbling home.
After all the years of going to Jupiters while in school, I had never sat on the outside patio area. It is such an amazing atmosphere at night; with a live band, christmas lights hanging on the vined-trellis, conversation with friends, and pomegranate cider in hand, the night could not get any better.
Oh man, and the pizza... don't get me started! It rivals Cheeseboard! Back in the day I was a fan of the Eutropia when it still existed on their menu. It was a sad day when I failed to locate it on their menu on my next visit. However, the IO (pesto and chicken) and Xanthia (yukon gold potatoes, bacon, ricotta, garlic) are DELICIOUS. I want some right now mid-yelping...
Love it!!
The patio rocks...uber romantic for sharing a bottle of wine or beer...but so is the upstairs - rustic and warm.
PIzza is delish, salad is scrumptious, and the hummus three ways plate is great to start with.
There's a load of reviews on here, but I wanted to say my two cents, since my husband and I have been frequenting their patio quite often lately.
In actuality it's a 3.5. I'm generous in this case.
Free pizza at a recruiting event is always a good thing. I took the opportunity to nosh on some great pizza and appetizers that I would otherwise refuse to pay for on my own.
Things that Jupiter does right when price isn't an issue:
flat crust pizza (too much crust though and not enough sauce-y goodness!). I wish I knew what it was but there was this sausage one I tried that was effing delicious. The mushroom and pepperoni ones are good to try as well. Amber. So smooth. They also make delicious mushroom poppers (coined by moi since I didn't see the menu).
Salads are tasteless here. Do not get the salads!
Dang I ate a lot at this recruiting event..
Anyway, if you want to plan a group event, def go to Jupiter! The staff was uber attentive, nice, and able to snake around us who constantly impeded their paths. Jupiter staff, you rock.

I give this place a 3, maybe 3.5. The only reason I didn't want to give it a 4 was because this… Read more »
Great spot, lovely patio area... Had a great, fresh salad and the mercury pizza. It was excellent- way, way better than my hangover. I'd be happy to eat here again anytime and I might even feel well enough to try one of the many available beers on tap...
If you are searching for a pub/bar which you can just chill at, while avoiding the rowdiness of other local establishments, Jupiter is your place. The crowd here just seems much more mellow. If you come here to try out their pizzas, I would recommend getting the Odysseus, which is essentially their mushroom pizza. They don't have the most extensive collection of beers and drinks, and many times they RUN out of whatever you happen to choose to drink at the time (it would save time and help to choose a couple of backups to your main selection). The beers, especially the in-house brews, are competent and are worth trying.
However, this place is a popular stop of Berkeley nightlife for good reason, whether you're pub/bar crawling or making this your one destination. Prices here an itty bit on the pricier side (just my perception, not an actual tested comparison). Considering the other options in the area though, I don't find myself coming here very often. Its just that I find the "niche" Jupiter fills (a more relaxed place to chill eat/drink while NOT shouting over loud music or squinting through dim light) isn't one I normally often find myself searching for. Don't let that stop you from coming here though. Jupiter is a great place.
Depending on how crowded the place is, where you sit, and who serves you, I would rate this place somewhere between a 3 and a 4, with most my experiences hitting closer to the 4.
After 700+ reviews, there really isn't anything super amazing I can say... but that won't stop me from Yelping!
This place is all about the patio. Tons of seating available and you can either enjoy the live music and sit by their little stage, or hang out by the fire. The atmosphere is pretty casual and the service is great. Wasn't hungry enough to order any of the pizza, but they smelled delicious! Beer is good, wine selection is small, but they have a good list.
A great place to chill with friends, enjoy some music and libations!
Great pizza, outdoor seating, live band, great selection of beer ... What more do you need??!!
We came in here after an non-concentual church visit for dinner.
I was not in the best mood and frankly, a bit offended. However, my frustration at having the J-man sprung on me without being asked melted away when we walked in. The front of the joint is cute, but the patio was what we were after. We walked back and, after making several loops, realized we were going to be lurking for a table for a minute. I was complimented left and right on my footwear choice, which further lifted my jesus-free spirits.
When we finally found a table suitable for five in the back, I was nearly my sulk-free self again. I perused the menu and was impressed at the pizza options. Only one spot at home can rival this - potatoes on a pizza will always be a super-win. Needless to say, we went with that one.
I ordered a small house salad to start... It wasn't small, but it WAS a little meh. I was pretty nonplussed at first, but the atmosphere won me over as I absentmindedly noshed. Any patio or building that is covered in flowering vines is going to be a-ok in my book.
The potato pizza didn't live up to my standard though. I love a little thin crust, wood-fire action, but this was a bit too dry in the center. And our server was lagging. Several people tended to our drink needs, but didn't seem clear as to where they belonged. More than once, we had to flag the server or person carrying our drinks to tell them we recognized them and they were for us.
Our server was sweet as pie, but slowwww.
Bummer. Decent though. Great atmosphere.
Cool atmosphere. Good beer for sure, but I guess I was looking for some stuff that was a little more niche than your standard IPAs, hefs, etc. I didn't have any of the food, but it did look amazingly tasty...not gonna lie. I'll be back when I'm over on that side of the bay again. There's really no bad time to not drink a bunch of beer.
The back patio was pretty much a godsend given that it was about a million degrees outside when we went. Dammit all heatwaves. If you are there, and there is open seating, make sure to plop yourself at a table fast - it will convert over to table service before you know it. Servers are really cool though, and will be happy to keep you stocked with some brews and food whenever you need them.
For the life of me I couldn't find this place online, because I kept searching for "Mars", not "Jupiter". And can you blame me? After all, Venus is just down the street. All these planets are confusing me!
Love: the outdoor seating, the fire pit, and all the beer choices. But nothing "hoppy" for me please - apparently that translates into "bitter". The lamb kabobs were a must-try!
Hail Jupiter! It's a brewery, serves food to try and keep their clientele from swerve-driving home, and offers live music on the weekends (and weeknights during the summer) to entertain those who's conversations cannot sustain them for the duration of a beer.
Jupiter stays in our rotation due to their consistent and above-average fare. My man and I like beer, and food with our beer is even better, but good food with good beer is most excellent!
We prefer a lighter hopped beer, so the Amber works out well for us. The rest of their beer isn't bad either, having tried their hefeweizen and the Bavarian-like Wit recently, two nice summer brews. Their hefe was less sweet than the wit and had a nice tang to the finish, it went well with the Triton pizza (Sicilian sausage, red onion, crisped basil, and mozzarella) we ordered. The sausage has an overhwelmingly porky flavor, which was quite nice. Usually these types of sausages on pizza are dominated by fennel and being able to taste the meat for once was a happy change of pace for us. The crist is almost cracker-like, light and thin with a crisp snap but if you let it sit on the tray and allow it to steam a little bit, it gets a little chewier.
Other food worth noting is their lamb kebabs, not sure why it is under the seasonal section because it's been there almost year-round, but it's served with a raisin and almond couscous and a nice fig reduction, and some mixed greens. The beet salad is also very well executed and is always a top choice for us. Their barbecue rib tips are only ok- they are not terrible or dry, but they lack the oomph that a real barbecue house would be able to offer. I can't say I blame them, because their main feature is their wood fired pizza oven, and they do pizza right!
My only peeves are that the garden is always crowded and it is a first come, first served basis. They only take names and have a wait list for the inside seating, the noise level can get quite cacophonous both upstairs and street level.
Keep up the good brew, Jupiter! Glad to have you guys in our back yard.
A fun place to enjoy music, company and pizza. If you want to sit outside, good luck. Seriously. It gets crowded. We had better luck inside which is fine. Great selection of pizzas. Yummy. Delicious. Great place to chill.
Service was good, a little on the slow side but I'll cut them slack cuz the place was packed! Great pizza! Okay beer...
Solid place. Not only is their beer excellent, but their food is also quite good for the price.
We had to sit way in the corner of the place, and in fact got the second to last table available in the joint. Then again, it was Friday night and there were lots of people there. So, there was definitely ambiance.
For $20 including a tip we had 2 pints of beer and the spinach/artichoke dip appetizer. Excellent all around.
Came here for a friend's 21st birthday. We tried to roll in a gianormous group of 14, which is pretty ambitious considering how popular the place is. Though you can't make reservations, we called ahead of time to just give em a heads-up. The waiters were pretty responsive (and a bit apologetic) when we kept trying to free up some tables for our group. I'd heard they were giving the stink-eye to squatters on our behalf.
Service++
Pretty much everyone at the table got the Xanthia pizza, the potato/bacon pizza. A tasty combination, indeed, and great for pigging out on.
Not a lot of beer drinkers at our table, so I ended up tasting only the Honey Wheat, the Amber, and the Porter. The porter was particularly cool because of the dark, dark chocolate/coffee taste that I'd never really had before.
Unfortunately, it was almost just as much a meal as the pizza. I had to choose. It was a sad moment leaving both unfinished. I'm not proud of it.
A local jazz band was playing, which made the environment pretty relaxed. The service was great too, and obviously friendly, especially judging from the jokey reactions after one of the waiters seriously party-fouled a full pint of honey wheat.
No, they didn't zamboni that shit.
Next time I'm gonna try sitting outside, it looked more kickin' out there.
The vibe here is chill. It is not the place to get smashed and trashed, although there is no guarantee of that not happening. Apparently, they don't sell any liquor, just beer. I have no complaints about that though.
I like how the outdoor area is dotted with college kids here, middle-aged couples and groups there. A live band also plays, but I'm not sure if there's one daily. Even though it was a Wednesday, it was pretty packed. My friends and I were squeezed to the back right next to the kitchen entrance of Cafe Panini. This seating section is not very included in the "action," but hey, you get your privacy and can hear your friends talking.
I got a Hef for $4.50 without tip. Decent, no complaints with Hef as usual. Friends got the dry stout, but I wasn't a big fan when I tried it, because it was a bit watered down.
When the front desk was checking IDs, they denied this dude from coming in because he didn't have a state issued ID. He looked of age and didn't look like a douchebag, yet they turned him down. I don't know what was up with that, but I felt bad for him. I hope he ended up satisfying his libations elsewhere.

Perfect place for a romantic date. Food and beer is great, and the ambiance is spectacular!!! You have to sit outside no matter the wait to enjoy the beautiful garden and always talented, perfect eating live music. I LOVE THIS PLACE!!!
The pizza and beer are the highlights on the menu.
I really like the atmosphere of Jupiter, especially on a hot sunny day. If your into people watching, this is a perfect place!
The pizza is to die for, last time we were there me and my friend had the garlic shrimp pizza. It was so good. And we had the spinach and artichoke dip which was soooo creamy and delicious.
The only downside, which isnt a large contributing factor of whether ill go back or not, is that I love hard cider. And i ordered some of their cider and it seemed really watered down and tasteless. But their beer selection makes up for it.
Recommended for sure.
After hitting up Pyramid Brewery and Alehouse, the in-laws, husband, and I headed off to Jupitar to drink more beer. We got seated easily upstairs. My Honey Wheat Ale was sweet tasting and light. I am in no way an expert in beer but I really enjoyed the flavor. My in-laws also enjoyed their beers, more so than PBA. Their think crust pizza consisting of spinach, feta, and sundried tomatoes was tasty but seemed a bit soggy. I prefer the crust of Cheeseboard and Arizmendi's.
This is a great place to chill with friends and listen to some music on the weekends. If I return to Jupiter's I would try to find seating in the back to be closer to the music.
Whta can I say that 774 people before haven't said? Not much.
However my review is the following:
Great beer!
Great Atmosphere.
Try the Andromeda, it is a pizza sent from the gods. Lots of cheese and cooked to perfection.
It gets loud, but then again it is a brew pub.
See a show at Berkeley Rep and then eat dinner or get drinks here. In fact you could probably do it before too, but who am I to judge?
