this is the chillest coffee shop ever. everrrrrrr! jungle java has always been my favorite coffee shop in san diego. hands down. it is unlike anywhere else. when i lived in boston for five years, i missed jungle java the most. sitting on the back patio is sitting outside surrounded by sun and a water fountain and so many plants. it is such a lush patio and it is so incredibly relaxing. if you're feeling a little more awake or social, sit on the front patio for some awesome ob people watching.
let's just say that this is the place to be if you just want to chill.
Friendly, inviting coffee shop with a nice garden nook and upbeat, personable staff. Espresso wasn't half bad, either :)
I love sitting at the main table looking out on Newport and taking in OB in all of its crazy, burnt out hippie glory.
Seen yesterday:
1) A stoned woman pull over her car to yell at a pedestrian: "You look like my friend!"
2) A international traveler from the youth hostel tell his American lady friend that he had a girlfriend back home, but she didn't mind him having fun.
3) A large, hairy shirtless man proclaim that he was "the hottest."
I'm gonna miss OB.

Love the atmosphere and the people. (And people watching.)
The regular coffee is very average, and has been lukewarm on a couple occasions when I've been there.
Relaxing, inviting, dog friendly and tasty!
great scenery, friendly staff, and you can hear the rolling of the waves.
great place to sit and read as you enjoy a morning coffee.
One of my favorite coffee places by far!

Fun, relaxing atmosphere, a great place to sit and read, you can bring your dogs, and they allow smoking at the tables towards the street. Beat that, Starbucks!
Down with corporate coffee! Support OB businesses!!!!

As one reviewer said, I don't have a yard, so this is my patio! I figure it's cheaper to buy coffee at Jungle Java than to try to pay rent on a place in San Diego with a patio or a yard. Friendly, quick service, and dogs are welcome, but the best part is just that it's one big outdoor space. I have whiled many and afternoon away there with a latte and a crossword puzzle or a book.
One warning: no bathrooms! Just sneak into the Blue Parrot or Gallaghers and use theirs.

Introduce yourself to the barristas and the locals, and you will quickly find this place becoming one of your new hangouts. On any given day, there is never a lack of friendly people with whom to associate over a cup of joe, a cigarette, and a good book. The food selection is minimal, but understandable because the barrista spends the majority of his/her time making drinks (as it should be) and socializing with customers (also as it should be). It's an OB establishment, so it's minimalistic, which is perfect. If you want a place where you'll be treated like a regular even on your first visit, this is the place for you.
I really like the atmoshere here, its so chill and inviting. On a nice sunny morning its a great place to go get coffee and hang out. There's water falls and the whole garden atmosphere feels really great.
Support this local OB Business. It's got a way better atmosphere that Strabucks over the street.
Delightful open air cafe and gardening shop.
There's really no reason, in such a temperate climate, not to have a cafe with no ceiling and no walls: just a canopy in the alley between two buildings in the middle of busy Newport. (Caution: no bathrooms!)
Green and lush and cozy, it's a favorite of locals, and is always moderately busy, populated with all kinds people studying, working, and writing, and having the kind of long, lazy conversations that strangers strike up in great coffee shops.
I'll often spend the afternoon here, sipping espressos, nibbling pastries, reading the paper, playing Scrabble or chess.
Simply a great place.
Unfortunately, I don't have a yard with a beautiful garden where I can sit and sip coffee while leisurely flipping through the morning paper.....BUT....I can go to Jungle Java and do it there!
JJ is a favorite stop of mine in OB. Its a quiet place to sit and relax amongst flowers and plants on Sat or Sun morning because a lot of OB-tians are still in bed recovering from the night before! They offer great coffee drinks and pastries-the lemon bars they used to have were the bomb! You can even shop for cute gardeny items or small plants to take home to your own yard...if ya have one.

love the park like atmosphere but the coffee sucks. It's stored in a thermos and lukewarm. The Vietnamese Coffee wasn't strong enough & the Italian Soda ~ flat.
If you don't mind paying for mediocre food and no service, this is the place to go!

On a warm day you can't beat this place for relaxing. Part coffee shop, part garden for sale. The place is outdoors and they don't mind if you linger a long while. Only problem is they don't have a restroom. There is one at the beach, but if you have ever been in that restroom you know it is not the greatest option. Though I still always stop by when in town, I liked this place better when my apartment was only a block away.

I love Jungle Java! I'm not even a huge coffee drinker, but the atmosphere here is so nice that it doesn't matter. It's reminiscent of the outdoor seating style I enjoyed one summer in Costa Rica. Plus, why go to the OB Starbucks which has no ambience at all? They have frequent buyer cards and their plants are pretty reasonably priced as well!
Jungle Java makes me happy. With baristas that actually remember your name and drink this is the place to go for your coffee. I enjoy a strong Americano and am always pleased with the espresso that is pulled at this establishment.
Again, BUY LOCAL!

Big fan, to be sure. i used to stop by here in the mornings on the way to school, right after they'd run out of the morning's first brew. Fresh coffee! And good, too, and always an organic option (which i took).
i never tried their snacks, nor purchased garden devices (though, now that i think about it...). But it is my favorite coffee in OB.
Sweet outdoor ambience? Check.
Cute elfin barrista? Check.

This is my favorite coffee house in OB. However, it's not actually in a house. It's a coverted parking lot. OB has enough things covered in tar (especially the residents' lungs) so it's great to turn an eyesore into a cool place that has plants, knickknacks and a great vibe. Oh, and good iced coffee too.

I love coming here to have a coffee amongst plants. There is ample comfortable seating outside.. relax, read the newspaper or a book and enjoy your coffee while listening to some low volume music playing in the background.
Bring a sweater or something to keep you warm in case you're not sitting in the sun.
Java jungle is not a luxurious coffee house. If you want that in OB, I'm afraid your only option is Starbucks and yes there is a Starbucks in OB and yes I'm sure the residents were sickened when the franchise opened in their neighborhood, but I digress.
Java Jungle is a cafe and a garden shop all in one. The cafe is outside and when I visited there in the night time, the charm of the place was lost on me.
It was cold there was no insulation. The venue was also dark and dingy. My mocha wasn't that great either. I didn't so much feel like I was in garden, but I definitely felt like I was in an alley way.
Although I am sure the outside seating and floral setting is awesome during the afternoon or in the summer months.
Plus, the staff was really friendly and attractive. So in that case, when it warms up, I think I will be going back.
