You know when you run into an old friend you haven't seen for a while and tell them how good they look, but in actuality, they just look "different" than you remembered? That was how I felt about Julie's after Chum L. and I stumbled in to wish Jason K. a happy birthday last Saturday. We used to come here pretty regularly back in the day -- if I had a dollar for every, "Hold my hair." Sigh. And what the hell happened to that awesome polenta? Anyhoo, I think those fond memories are what assured them a three versus two star designation, but it *is* snazzier (I don't miss that neon yellow) and easy to get a drink, yet somehow more different than better.

Julie's occupies a pretty sweet space; Lots of standing room, large adjacent private room with dance floor, dining area in the back, and a patio out back. Parking is easy in the neighborhood too.

I can't comment on the supper they serve. Maybe I'd be more excited about the place if I'd tried the food.

But let me tell you about the club. It's a club with long waits (even when they have a guest list and know exactly how many people will be there that night) ONE beer on tap (it's trumer, which is alright fortunately) and a pretty thin selection of alcohol. Aren't there like five thousand premium vodkas available these days? Can you turn in any direction these days without being bombarded with ads for vitamin-fortified, super-distilled, infused-with-virgin's-blood vodkas? How is it that Julies can have like four options and be out of two of them. I didn't see much in the way of whiskey either. pricey too. eh.

Julie's is sort of like a comfy living room, only with more eclectic music than my living room tends to have. Yes, the food is too pricy, and the drinks aren't the strongest (I'm a lightweight so I actually sort of appreciate that!), but the bartenders are adorable and the crowd is friendly (er . . . I might be one of those goth yuppies a previous review was mentioning.) The Swing Goth night is good silly fun. It's true that the dance is taught in a somewhat idiosyncratic style, but you can learn some good basics, and the music is awesome. The first night I went, a gorgeous man swung me around the dance floor to the strains of Depeche Mode, and I was hooked. And really, what's not to like about slow, creepy dancing to Fiona Apple!?! Full disclosure: Aforementioned gorgeous man is now my boyfriend, so maybe I'm a little prejudiced.

I love Julies Supper Club. OK, I am lying. I could do without the karaoke night (Wednesdays) which for me sticks out in contrast, but each to their own. There are a whole other 6 days I can go there and enjoy the ambiance that is slightly pink in hue.

The first time I went... I thought it was a little strange as the bar was almost entirely empty. Now there is a part of me that loves the fact I can go in and not have to fight 400 people to get served, or to have a seat and its a little gem that is hidden in the Mission. The other part of me thinks its a shame that there isn't more attention to this place. I hover between wanting more people there so the business doesn't go under and wanting it to remain in the same state and with all of its charm intact.

I started through the Swing Goth night that runs on a Tuesdays, but I now find myself using Julies as a great place to meet people (and also introduce them to Julie's as well). The bar-staff and the owners are really friendly and the jukebox/TV are always playing something worthy of note.

So basically, please come to Julie's! Just not in your millions... I still want my space at the bar...

Gothic Swing Dance night was horrible. In particular the classes before the open event were without a doubt the worst swing dancing lessons I have ever received.

I have no idea where these teachers got there training but what they teach will at best hinder a new comers ability to learn real swing dancing.

If you have any desire to learn to swing dance stay as far away from this teacher as possible. Instead check out http://oldtimey.net/tu...

As for the event it's self I found the music selection more goth then anyone could realistically dance to. Not very enjoyable.

I didn't like this place very much and I probably wouldn't go back there.

Right when I walked in, one of the first things I saw was a room full of people swing dancing in slow-mo to Fiona Apple's "Criminal." Fucking weird.

I sought refuge in the bathroom and found that the outside door locks even though there's 3 stalls inside. This feature comes in handy if you need to hole up with your girlfriends and spike your incredibly weak drinks.

The layout was cool; I'm really tired of L-shaped bars that are super narrow in the front with a seating area in the back, so I appreciate any place that doesn't stick to that model. I wouldn't ever make Julie's a destination but given the location, it seems like the regular clientele must go out of their way to get there.

Hey all

So this is a review of Goth swing as much as Julie's supper club.   I think goth swing is an incredible scene, and it seems distinctly and uniquely San Francisco.

I came three months ago for the first time, had a great deal of fun and haven't missed a Tuesday yet.  Five of my favourite people in the city are people I met here.  I have no sense of rythym yet I feel comfortable dancing here, sad but true ;)

Brian's a great teacher, and it's all about finding your own style and having fun.  The music is great, I never thought I'd dance to They Might Be Giants and Leonard Cohen and the Ramones all in the same night.  Or at all, except for a mosh pit for the Ramones...

And Julie's supper club is a great venue, the people are really friendly and even though the bartender tells me he hates me everytime I order a Mandy Moore, he's always very generous with the Rum.  Considering how strong my drinks always are and how drunk my close friend Token always gets, it's hard to understand why people say the drinks are weak there.

I've only had the fries there but they were good, I wish they'd put some good old fashioned comfort food on the menu like mozarella sticks or buffalo chicken or mini burgers, but that's just me.

I'll stick to the highlights here:

-Great Gyoza.Like really really good.
-Nice back patio for us Dinosaur smokers
-Drinks were a little expensive
-Needs more clientèle

Its a great location, nice space, and the people were nice. But there was almost no one there besides our party, and it was strangely pricey on the drinks.

A really fun, low-key place. Went there on a Friday night, where they had the a PS3 hooked up, and just enjoyed some drinks and playing Rock Band with complete strangers. We made a pretty good rock band, too. I'll definitely be going again.

I came to Julie's for Swing Goth.

That's right, bitches. I am goth, and I like to swing. Dance, I mean.

That doesn't sound like me? Well, if you knew me in real life instead of just over the internetz you'd know that I LOVE THAT SHIT. Swing Goth night at Julie's was the most fun I've had in a long time. Fxxx all these West Coast hipsters with their experimental music and indie rock. Just give me the Clash and show me how to dance to it like my grandfather would have.

Huh?

I SAID --

Put the 20th Century into your culture shaker and serve me a martini!!!

Now that's what I call interesting. THAT'S classy shit.

SuperBF and I went for a $5 lesson on a Tuesday night at Julie's, taught by my good pal Brian G., and the night was just gleeful. Drinks beforehand with a chatty and amusing bartender, dancing with an instructor who made us feel like we knew what we were doing, drinks after with more cool people...

It was a night that actually put a dent in my "I don't know if I belong on the West Coast" funk.

And, made me forget that I HAD been to Julie's before... It's the only bar that I've been refused service in for being too drunk, in all of SF. Thank God they, like I, seem to have put that in the past (heh)...

To new beginnings...

Julie's Supper Club is a nice venue under new management.  They're still gaining the reputation they deserve, and it didn't help that the city government put them through the ringer.

The food there is really good, and the portions are much bigger than they seem.  I've been running a Swing Goth night for over a year now where we do partner dancing to dark modern music (everything from The Clash to Tom Waits... that is if you think Gorilaz, The Cure, Sisters of Mercy, and Stone Roses fall in between The Clash and Tom Waits...) every Tuesday night.

I choose to move to Julies because it has a REALLY nice atmosphere with conversant wait staff.  They've got 4 rooms!  Right now, they're only using two, but even with two there's more than enough room for a lot to be happening.  There's a large dance floor in the back room, and a swank bar atmosphere in the front room.

It's a flower in the process of blooming.  You should definitely stop by to smell it sometime.  Especially on a Tuesday night!  ;-)

I love Julie's! This is the place to be karaoke on Wednesdays. That's right,  a nice man named Nick brings karaoke to Julie's. Last time, girls were even dancing on the bar. it's not "that kind" of place or anything, just a really great place to go with friends for no-kj-attitude karaoke. in my experience drinks aren't quite strong enough, but they have a great pilsner.

I really like Julie's Supper Club, mostly because it's super convenient and incredibly eclectic. The inside is surprisingly large with a number of different rooms, plenty of comfy seating, and even an outdoor area in the back. There's rarely more than a handful of people which makes for a comfy place for a chat, and the pink lights and dark wood are amusingly retro. Oh, and the bartender is very nice!

Love this place. Go there every Wednesday for Karoake w/ Nick,  Marie & their entourage. Been going there about 3 times a week for the past 6 months (don't  tell my SO) & the crowd varies nicely, which is good. I like variety. Its the spice of life. Great crab cakes, pasta, garlic fries, steaks, pot stickers & lamb mmmmmm. The cook George will cook it to your taste. The rest of the staff Cher, Jerold, Zack & Nate are very attentive. Diffferent groups may be having events at any given nights. There's Swing goth, the Democratic club, film nights & PS3 on Fridays. The place is very cater friendly to different crowds. Good laughs with a BBQ at the back porch, a dance floor, back room for private office or birthday parties. A safe place for you bar hoppers who don't like being hustled. You know what I'm talking about. Drink prices are reasonable......FYI: I don't work here or have any interest  with the proprietors. I just like to write well deserving reviews. This is my first review under this pen name. Enjoy the summer all fellow yelpers.

Lately I've been finding myself at Julie's on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
The Bartender is great - he's funny and serves up a a mean bourbon and ginger. The music they've been playing is all kinds of fun, too.
On Tuesdays they have this swing night happening in the back room. It's separate enough that you can get into and join the fun, or hang out at the bar and enjoy a low key atmosphere.
They had a Sunday night that I really enjoyed - all classic soul music. It ended just recently, though. Hopefully it'll come back as a monthly.
Oh, and their fries? Delicious.

This place is kewl and odd at the same time. We got there at 6:30 on a weeknight and had the whole place to our selves. Bartender was amazingly fun and attentive, we really enjoyed his company! Their dinner menu takes somewhat generic foods and attempts to dress them up. I had the chicken and smooshed potatoes with veges, it was quite delicious for seeminly ordinary items. I was disappointed when the waiter/bartender said there were no desserts on the menu...
If I'm ever in SOMA, I'd come here for drinks and appetizers for sure!

I don't know what the "II" in the name is all about.  When I last visited this place--I think it was this place--it was just called Julie's Supper Club.  If it's totally different from the place that occupied the same location in November 2003, I apologize for the inaccuracy of this review.

So I'm finally writing a review about a place South of Market.  Actually, I've already written a few SOMA reviews, but I still have people complaining that I'm an everywhere-in-San Francisco-but-SOMA snob, so I'm trying to write reviews about the places I've been.  That's not very many.

Anyway, Julie's Supper Club (II) seemed to me like a bar with different rooms.  There were people eating and drinking and dancing, but I didn't get the idea that it was a dance place.  I don't really know anything about dancing, though, so don't take my word for it.  I thought it was a little too dark, but the people I was with were fun, so I didn't really care about anything in the world.

Julie's has a small back room for dancing, a borderline-quality sound and lighting system, okay but overpriced food, and solid offerings of mixed drinks.

It also has these bizarre glowing lights behind the bar that cast the entire lounge area in a pink haze -- almost as if you're being irradiated by high-tech microwaves. In fact, the bar looks so much like something out of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" that I think they should scotch this whole "supper club" concept and reopen this place as a Trekkie bar called the "Alcoholodeck."

Sure, geeks aren't the most highly sought-after demographic for a trendy restaurant and night club -- but their Silicon Valley money spends the same as everyone else's. Right?

Okay -- you caught me. This whole review was just an excuse to make that awful "Alcoholodeck" pun....

Best here is the bartender Kit.  Friendly in nature, fast cocktail maker guy.  Clean place with good music.  Even has parking available in the Jiffy Lube lot but better get a pass.

I'm not giving it 5 star because there wasn't anyone else there other than our party of 10.  Where's everyone else at on a Thursday night?

TERRIBLE, Don't waste your money.  Met a friend for dinner and ordered the salmon special, which was my second choice because they were out of crab cakes.

A few minutes after I ordered, a guy walks out and asks how I want my salmon cooked.  Presumably, he was the "chef," though he looked like he'd just left the gym.  After dinner arrived, he came back wanting reassurance on how he'd cooked the salmon.  Does a good chef really need to ask???  The truth is, it was cooked fine but far too much dill and not enough seasoning.  But the worst part was the sauteed vegetables, which were a soggy, unseasoned mess.  Seriously, I could have cooked a better meal myself and it wouldn't have cost me $50 for two entrees, NOT including any drinks.  They didn't even give us bread or something to nosh on, which I might expect with an $18 entree.

Ugh, I haven't been that disappointed in a meal in a long time.  I hope their swing or salsa lessons are actually bringing in the cash cause the food certainly won't.

I don't know anything about the history of this place nor would this ever be a final destination for me BUT I see potential.

On my very recent visit I strolled in with a couple of friends to the following:

1. Homeless, harmless dude speaking in a very high voice at the bar
2. Group of hipster/goth/yuppie's (I swear) eating dinner
3. Homeboy that looked like Richie Valen's older brother (dug his hat) at the bar.
4. 3 random couples at the bar.

- Had the aura of a bar that should have been in the movie Swingers!
- Decor = So trashy that it was extremely classy.  Where is Sinatra when I need him?

Whatever this bar had, I felt the good vibes!  Could be a great place to see a small intimate venue.

Bottom line: I want SO bad for this place to stay open!  I will give it 5 stars and tell everyone to go here regardless of what other Yelpers say.

That said - here is the skinny....Julie's has alot of history and REALLY great food.  But there are some issues that needs to be worked out by it's new owners.  Here is my 2 cents (and hopefully the owners read this):

- Julie's was supposed to be torn down and replaced with condo's.  But the City felt it would be better to have this building as a historical landmark.  Apparently, this building is one location where the Symbionese Liberation Army held Patty Hearst hostage in the 1970's.  Kinda cool huh.

- the new owners are really cool folks.  They are trying different concepts for both the restaurant and the club area.  Husband and wife team.

- the building is connected to the building right next to it.  So now, there is the restaurant area and the "club" area next door.  This makes the entire space pretty large.  The basement and 2nd floors are not used.

- the original "Julie's" sign is still out front and the owners decided not to change the name.

- the food is GREAT.  But, the prices are kinda steep for the area.  I sincerely hope the owners can find a way to make the pricing a little more competitive.  OR - make the place VERY upscale.  See below for how they can do this.

- the outside of the building needs a new design and fresh paint.  In my opinion, it is an eye sore and does not draw new business.

- they need to advertise more and have unique nights

Overall, the atmosphere is wonderful, the location is great, the food is perfect.  But, the owners need to do a few more things to make this a sustainable business.  It will not last unless they find a way to increase their visibility in a positive way.

Please drop by and support this gem in the meantime.

It's not closed!  It has reopened but you'd never know it.

I was excited to try this place out, we went last night (a Friday), got to the door and it was empty, not a soul to be found.

We found that a little depressing and awkward so we decided not to have dinner there.

Why aren't the new owners advertising this place it OPEN again!?!
They'd better hurry up and get a better website while they're at it.

Good luck Julie's, I'll try you again on Monday for swing dance night.

I went here for "After Dark" (www.afterdarksf.com), a monthly saturday party.  The music was really cool (electro, darkwave, industrial, glam, etc.), and they had a pretty good soundsystem in the back room where the dancefloor was.

The front room was the bar/restaurant area, where you can get a generously-poured cocktail (depending which bartendar you get) and order food until midnight, if you're hungry.  I didn't try the food, so my review only covers the party.  =)  The volume isn't too loud at the bar, so you can bring a date (hot goth chick would be suitable) and actually get to know one another before making out on the dancefloor!

My girlfriend dragged me here to have dinner with a bunch of her coworkers for one of their birthdays. I've got to admit, I wasn't expecting much but they really took care of us well. The birthday boy is a regular and the owner put together a "set" menu for us. They put out very tasty, sharable appetizers, and had about five entrees to choose from. When the food came there wasn't a single choice I would't have been happy with (although I went with the grilled flat iron steak and my girlfriend went with the crab cakes).

I want to try it again to see if they're regular meals are as good, and would definitley recomend it as a great place to go with a group (but talk to management/the owner to set something up).

I'd give them 5 stars but the service could have been a little more attentive and I just can't feel right about spending $7/$8+ on a not that strong, not that big drink (even if it was a kick ass mojito).

Ive yet to eat here but have been to a few events that werent crackin!  Its a nice spot and looks like it would do well but needs the right event.  Tons of seating in the restaurant side of it with a large bar and expenisve drinks!  I think I paid $10 for a Long Island!  It was worth it though, I was F to the ucked up!!

The dance floor is pretty nice, about the same size as the dining area with a few tables around...the DJ booth is bigger than average and the restrooms are right there!!  Good size, nice and clean er than Ive seen in the city.  Great spot!!  Location is good too...I park across the street in the Paint store parking lot...will be back soon!!

Three cheers for the greatest bartenders in San Francisco! The food is delicious, the owners are great, parties are funky, and the crowd gets wild. I do love to get down at this SOMA spot.
In fact, I think it's the best place on Folsom.

My roommates and I decided to grab a bite here a few months ago after looking at it from across the street from Brainwash over a period of months.  Went in, only two other tables of people there, looked over the menu and decided to go tapas.  We got the lamb, pork, something Asian (this WAS a few months ago, I haven't got a photographic memory), everything was great, well done, but yes, expensive.  It was a nice experience, but I probably will not be going back.

New owners (some time in latter half of 2006) have given this standard a much needed jolt of life. A fresh new look to the interior, nice and chilled atmosphere; very fun, relaxed staff; and a menu that shows promise - but how come I can't get the lunch time hamburgers at dinner?

They have Trumer beer on tap - and that is a fine thing.

Went to Julie's Supper Club because a friend was playing a show there.  When we showed up the place looked dangerously empty for a show to be going on.  Only 4 people at the bar and 1 of them turned out to be an employee.  When we got in, we noticed there was an adjoining room where all the music was going on.  A nice setup as you could escape the loud when you went ot the bar for a drink.

We hadn't eaten yet, so we ordered dinner, teriyaki chicken and a small order of the lamb.  The teriyakii chicken was good, but I was too hungry to savor it and stuffed my face quickly.  Heather said the lamb was delicious and mentioned it several times over the course of the night.

The interior was nice and waitstaff was friendly.  The adjoining room where the bands were playing was a bit cramped, but still nice.  The menu was limited and a bit on the pricey side, but we'd be back again if there were an event or happened to be nearby and hungry.

I am bummed to hear this place is gone.  I went here for drinks the very first night after I moved to San Francisco.  I'll never forget the bachelorette party here and the girls dancing on the bar!  What a welcome to the city!

I live about 1/2 block from there, and for about six years never set foot in the place.  Too yuppie for me.  I finally did go eat there once, and although the food was good, the portions were small and it was expensive.

Apparently they weren't making any money, because as of a couple months ago, Julie's has closed permanently.

EDIT: They've reopened under new management.  However, I expect they'll be belly up by March 2007 at the outside.  The place is always almost empty.  The previous owners couldn't make money there even though the place was packed on Friday and Saturday nights, but now a big crowd there is like 10 people.

Last night was my birthday.  we called to make reservations and it took them over a day to get back to us and let us know that the date and time we had wanted would work.  The group was a little on the large side 15 of us.

we arrived to a totally empty restaurant, we were the only people there.
I found the waiter to be condescending.  the new menu to be  a little odd, the combinations all over the place.  They offer all items as suppers or tapas, and i guess we should have listened when the waiter suggested we get them as tapas and share, that they come out of the kitchen when they are ready.  As opposed to the suppers where they hold the whole tables meals until everything is ready, or try to.

We waited a long time for our meal.  What this meant was that many of us had luke warm meals.  And by that time we were so hungry that we just let it slide.

i ordered the flat iron steak, with extra veggies (zucchini, mushrooms, onions, and eggplant some peppers for color).  the veggies were cut so thin that it took me forever to figure out what they were, and it all tasted like onions.

There was only 1 vegetarian dish.  veggies over pasta in a cream sauce.   the same grouping of veggies, prepared the same way. mostly zucchini.  The person order the veggie dish got their meal so far after the rest of us, that we were all done by the time she got start.

really i can go on and on about how disappointing this meal was and i will never suggest eating here again.

it was a waste of time and was over priced for what you got.

it really made for a lame birthday.

I went to a party here about three years ago that was pretty good.  Alas, this place is yet another victim thrown by the wayside of San Francisco's brutally competitive and rapidly evolving culinary landscapes.

this is a great place with friendly staff, a great bar and good food. I've dropped by with a few friends on the way home, it's relaxed and has a nice vibe.
