I don't know what it was, but even though I know you can purchase dried fruits and nuts in bulk at places like Henrys and Whole Foods it's just something about being in a small town that compells you to lose your inhibition and buy bulk dried goods freely.

The julian cider mill is chockfull of bulk goods including their famous julian cider which you can try hot or cold, original and berry.

I walked away with cheddar cheese sesame sticks and garlic & onion pistachios. Totally worth it.

Julian is a cute, sleepy little town nestled high in the mountains of San Diego, known primarily for its annual apple harvest and various apple-related products. We spent a lazy afternoon there on Christmas Eve day with B's dad and younger brother, and it was perfectly relaxing (even if everything closed up shop at like, 3pm).

We made it to the cider mill 10 minutes prior to closing, so the browsing was a bit rushed. They have all sorts of fun stuff here, like nuts and trail mix and chocolate-covered nugs of whatever you can dream up--and then you have the jams, jellies, preserves, cider, butters, honey, etc. I'm very pro all of these things.

I had a cup of hot apple cider for $1. Twas good.

We also picked up a jar of strawberry preserves (no high fructose corn syrup), which was easily some of the best I've ever had.

My only complaint is why don't they have an online store?

I was being a tourist and wandered in here looking for something to bring back to my family. Since Julian was known for apple harvesting, I wanted apple-related stuff. The lady at the front counter helped me pick out a good honey, the apple blossom honey, best used for tea drinking. She provided samples and explained how honey bees pollenated in apple trees.

Besides honey, they had an interesting assortment of dried fruits, nuts, syrups, jams, chocolates, teas, mustards, and crunchy snacks. Also, you could try their hot apple cider for $1.50/cup and chilled apple cider for $1/cup.

Their cider is in stock so go get it now before it's gone for the season. I still think it's hilarious that they allow a jar to be put out for someone to ask for money to go on vacation. This time, it's a girl asking for money to go to Costa Rica. I wonder if it's the same girl as in my first review on this place.

A cute shop, but mostly lacking in authenticity.  As another reviewer stated its almost all mass produced merch. with their labels slapped on.  The only redeeming aspects are the selection of honey(bought some we'll see if they actually taste different later), and a few other locally made food items.

They're hot cider was really tasty, but so is Trader Joe's, and I'm betting you get more for your money at TJ's. I know, I know, it's a tourist town and I should expect inflated prices by now, but I just can't get over feeling ripped off.

As for the rest of the store, well, it's a gift shop. Mass produced snacks and trinkets with a "Cider Mill" sticker slapped on.

Cute little shop with all kinds of items I'd associate with a small town general store. Lots of varieties of apple & pumpkin butter (WONDERFUL stuff, I love pumpkin, don't you?), as well as various jams, jellies, ciders (duh), mustards (I recommend the spicy & sweet), nuts, dried fruits, etc. I even found old fashioned stick candy here for 20 cents a piece. Nice! Was able to score a horehound for when my throat feels scratchy. It's magic, I tell you... Anyway, stop by if you're in town! It's worth a look. By the way, $5 minimum for credit card purchases, but it's easy to reach that...

Love this place, stop in every time I drive up to Julian. I usually go in the fall and winter, and the old wood burning stove helps warm me up a bit. The honeys and jams are what I stock up on, they are wonderful and make great gifts. They also have a lot of old fashioned candy, dried fruits, mustards, marinades and yummy apple cider so there's is something for everybody here. Would totally recommend stopping by and sampling what they have to offer.

This is always a stop for me in Julian. As a transplant from Michigan, I must say this mill doesn't compare in any way to the ones back home...but the cider mills in Michigan also don't compare to living in beautiful San Diego!
So I stop here to reminisce a little bit and buy some yummy cider, tea, and candy. Their Mountain Fireweed honey is also a favorite of mine. Very cute place with friendly staff, a fun stop after a day of hiking in William Heisse park.

I'm glad that this time when I was in Julian, this place was open (they were closed last time I was here mid-week)!

You walk in and you get smacked right in the face with the wondrous scent of candy....most specifically licorice.  It's marvelous.  Strolling around, you find all sorts of fun snacks -- a lot of them even healthy!  The service is great & the people are friendly.

I bought some wasabi-peanuts (VERY hot!), some Samurai peanuts (odd...but fun), and some dried mango slices (a bit on the sweet side for me).  The selection is absolutely overwhelming and very reasonably priced.  They had probably a DOZEN different types of honey to choose from ... if you're a honey fan, as well as lots of dried fruits, nuts, and the previously-mentioned candy.

If you're looking for something slightly off the beaten path, give this place a walk-through!  You just might come away with a one-of-a-kind treat!

Friendly folks with samples to spare! Oooh, and you can watch them make a mess makin' cider in the back room- cooool!

WARNING: This product has not been pasteurized and therefore may contain harmful bacteria (author's note: the dreaded fecal matter) that can can cause serious illness in children, the elderly, and persons with weakened immune systems.

The aforementioned was on a white sticker that looked to be in the same font as the warnings on packs of cigarettes.  Hailing from the mountains, valleys, lakes, forests, streams, and cricks (yes, that is crick not creek mind yunz.) and cities of South Western Pennsylvania, I know this warning means it's really good apple cider.  Except, there never used to be warnings of the jugs.  It has just been over the past few years that, probably due to litigation, cider of the unpasteurized ilk has been telling of it's possible risks.  The risk is there because of potential for fecal matter contamination. An apple falls fresh from a tree and onto horse sh!t, cow sh!t, dog sh!t, teenwolf sh!t, icarus sh!t, hobo sh!t, wolverine sh!t, et cetera sh!t ground and that sh!t coated apple gets tossed in whole into the cider press.  Since pasteurized cider is fecal matter itself after tasting the fresh unpasteurized sh!t, i mean ummm Cider, then I will always accept this risk and drink, eat, and be happy.

Ahhhhh!

This cider is indeed fresh, sweet, smooth, with a slight tart note at the end. It tastes great cold or hot with some cimmanomnom stick, allspice, and cloves thrown in.  Maybe even some Maker's Mark. MMmmm... Drinking this real McCoy puts me in a melancholy mood for seeing my breath outside and crunching through falling leaves.  Maybe even while snowflakes drift about my pinking nose and cheeks.  Oh yes, the romance of a romantic life, tis' sometimes teh suck.

Yes, well the positives of this place is that it has lots of candies including rare ones like salty liquorice, some sorta candy with biblical scripture in every piece (bazooka jesus, anyone?) and many old school ones to boot. They have lots of nuts and honeys up in this joint.  Julian Cider Mill also kicks out the jams with even marion berry selections. Marion Berry was the mayor on DC and he was caught on video smoking crack with a prostitute and then we reelected him again after this video, and now, they name a jam after him? America, I love this country!

The only bad things about this place are their prices that I believe are designed for their cracker ass honky cracker tourists target market.  It costed me a lot of money for a 1 Gallon jug of Fecal Roulette Cider. It costed me like 9 dollars worth of U.S. Dollars.

You have to stop here when you are in Julian. I get dizzy just thinking about all the goodness in this place. They've got dried fruit and candy and nuts and popcorn and jelly and syrup and baking mixes and OMG apple cider to go. Okay, the cider is seasonal, but you can usually get one of the flavored ciders (today was cherry apple cider) in either a half gallon or gallon. You can get samples of the cold cider or get a hot apple cider for $1.

I'm down with the cider, but I can spend a bunch of time in here trying to decide what snacky goodness I am going to take home. Should I get some taffy? Or some english toffee? Or what about the pecan brittle? Or maybe even something sugar free for my mom? So many decisions to make. I am guaranteed to walk out of there with at least some caramel popcorn, some sort of nutty candy and a random pick.  It just depends on what strikes my fancy because everything there is good. And as long as you bring enough home to share, everybody loves you. (Maybe get an extra one of everything so you don't have to share?)

The Julian Cider Mill is my favorite stop in Julian. I can't resist the dried fruits, candy, jams, relishes, mustards, snack mixes. There's always a few samples to tempt you. I always leave with a big bag of goodies. Last time I picked up a great wasabi mustard that was excellent on sandwiches and I made a killer vinaigrette with it too. They have great Apple Cider. Stop here first and buy a bag of something to snack on as you walk the town.

The hot cider was fresh and delicious.  Extraordinary with cinnamon.

It accepts credit cards in the store, but if you buy anything on the porch of the store, it's cash only.

I enjoy buying locally made products like honey, and when in season Apple Cider here. It may be pricey, but you have to keep in mind that it is a town built upon tourism, and the local products support those living in the area. VISA/MC

The Cider Mill is located in a log cabin-style building, which made it an obvious destination on our little trip to Julian.  I wouldn't call this place a candy store, but rather the California version of a general store, where you find all kinds of flavorful products that may be hard to find elsewhere.  The shelves around the perimeter are loaded with all kind of cute, twee ceramics and gift items like teapots, mugs, and tiny books.  But head through towards the back where tables are loaded with nuts and snack foods (with samples of wasabi peas among other things).  There are countless bagged candies like Jordan almonds and licorice of every flavor, gummy frogs and fruit slices, etc, but you can get those anywhere.  The more interesting products are the jams and marmalades and mustards and spreads which may inspire your inner gourmand.  Don't leave without having a cup of cider to go (or at least a sample) -- raspberry cider was my pick, it was on the sweet side but nice and refreshing.  Worth a wander for sure.

Julian Cider Mill is a true plethora of sweets, snacks and sundries, with free samples to boot. We picked up some really great goodies for snacking on the road.. Caramel Nuggets (think... pops cereal meets cracker jack), rock candy, apple rings, jaw breakers, dried fruits/veggies, and for home - Julian Cider Mills very own spicy/sweet Raspberry Wasabi Mustard. Soo soo good. The long line through the shop can be intimidating at first, but it moves very quickly... In fact, I found the the "push you through the door" mentality to be borderline rude. Moderate prices.. most bagged goods between 3 and 5/6 dollars. While waiting (briefly) in line to pay, I noticed a hidden 75 cent snack bin. I rummaged through and found a decent size bag of candy coated sunflower seeds that I felt was a great score on my part...Hey hey. Lastly, on the way out, I noticed Caramel Apples for $2.50 - not bad. I'll have to try one next time. If nothing else, browse the store for the free samples... and just TRY not to buy anything. Just you Try.
