love it here. great atmosphere and the live jazz is good. i've eaten here twice and while the food isn't spectacular, it's good if you order right.
Honestly, the best part about Jules is the jazz! The bands you'll see here play at clubs all around the city.
In addition their menu offerings are pretty good - very rich French food. I recommend their mussels and rack of lamb. Go for the atmosphere.

This is a great place for a late evening snack and a few drinks. This place has a great atmosphere, with friendly staff and live jazz music. This place is great for a first date or to just hang out with friends.

Great Date place, cool music, good food, I have some off days but mostly on.
I like it to through it in early in the dating cycle because I find in not that expensive but fun and intimate.
Love the mussels

Meh. We passed by this place and saw people dining outside in the sunlight eating picture perfect eggs benedict, and jazz was blasting out of the restaurant. Everyone seemed to be having a good time, and we HAD to try this place.
Our own brunch experience here was not so great. We sat in the back of the restaurant, and it was SO dark back there! I think this might be a nice place to come at night with a date but for brunch it was just not right. Nobody should have to eat brunch by candlelight! What a difference from what I was expecting.
Other than that, the food was just mediocre. Nothing special. I would recommend waiting for a seat outside (I think there are only about 3 tables), or come here at night for a romantic date.
But based on my own experience, 2.5 stars rounded down to a 2. If we sat outside, I would probably give it 3.5 stars because the food was just not very remarkable.

I offer a review on narrow grounds: drinks, music, atmosphere. On these three vectors, Jules is a great place. A seat at the bar can be a little difficult to come by on a Saturday night. But if you're lucky enough to get one, or if you creepily loiter around for 20-30 minutes waiting for someone to leave, you'll be treated to good service, a decent (and fairly reasonably priced) wine list, and respectable selection of five to six beers on draught.
The music is electric guitar driven jazz with an occasional bluesy element thrown in. Great for sitting back to relax and soak in some music (and alcohol). The atmosphere is lively in the dimly lit venue, with most of the seating set aside for dinner customers actively conversing over the loud, but not overwhelming, music.
Customers filtering in and out of the bar range from stereotypical jazz hipsters (note the style of spectacles and beret or other suitably jazz hipster-ish headwear), to graduate students and young professionals, to Europeans. The last group, at last count, slightly outnumbers people from New York given a random sample of 100 people walking around Manhattan. I'm sure the thank you letters to the European Central Bank and to Ben Bernanke are en route from our friends across the pond. Not that this is a bad thing in terms of interesting conversation. Well, except with about 50% of the French tourists, who generally have a thin grasp of English. They manage to get around Jules okay though because the bartender is French as well.
This highlights another aspect of the Jules experience: you can use it as an opportunity to employ all of that French you learned from the travel guide that you bought two years ago before leaving for Paris. Or, if you're like me, you can sheepishly eke out a "Je regrete mais je ne parle pas Francais," (Yelp doesn't support the cedille) and then kick yourself because you slept through four years of high school French and haven't looked back since. Meanwhile, le petite fille de francais sitting next to you will return to her wine and friends, thanks. Next time, pray for Scandinavians.

Not only do I love this place, but i love it more because it's called my name. it is loud, and I dont think the food is that great, but I love the vibe and the atmosphere.. and the live music. Just a fun spot to come with a date if you are up to have a good time (not a first date though) or with friends, over good wine and good company. I have been a frequent repeat at this place and will continue to be.

T and I always pass here and we both thought this was just a jazz bar but to our delight - it's a restaurant as well.
I have been craving escargot and I love the French buttery goodness, so I seek out every restaurant that served them little critters.
My first pick was La Tour, but ended up switching and at the last minute picked Jules.
S tagged along but I didn't mind since I don't ever feel like uncomfortable when S and T are together. And S is funny, so T he is always welcome to join us.
Moving along - the place is a bit cramp but the quality of the food will help you forget how limited the space is there.
Appetizer:
French Onion Soup - it was good but I am not big fan of the soup.
Escargot - Yums! I finally satisfied my craving.
Entree:
Onglet de Boeuf la Bourguignonne - Pan roasted hanger steak with asparagus risotto
I thought it was really good even though I am not a big meat eater. T thought the asparagus risotto was a bit too creamy for her taste but I prefer my risotto to be more creamy.
Confit de Canard et Pommes de Terres Sarladaises - Duck leg confit served with sauted parsley and garlic potatoes
T really loved this dish and so did S.
I got the special codfish that night and it was cooked to perfection. It was tender and even T loved it. T hates fish but S convinced her to try my dish and she thought the meat resemble to the taste of a crab. T ate fish and she liked it - that never happens!
Dessert:
LA TARTE TATIN - upside down apple tart with vanilla ice cream
It was good but I preferred my LA PCHE MELBA.
LA PCHE MELBA - peaches in syrup, white chocolate ice cream,
and whipped cream. See above and this was my favorite dessert out of the three.
LA CRME BRULE - traditional crme brule, chilled and caramelized. Very good but again doesn't beat my dessert.
I must mention our waitress - Anna ( Polish) - she's super duper nice and I loved everything that she suggested to me. She described everything to a T and she never ever fabricated anything to me. So everything I had tasted exactly like she describe - this girl knows her stuff. Since most recently I had someone describe the taste of an entree wrong and so I have been wary ever since.
I would definitely start eating French in St Marks rather than Japanese.
5 stars for service, food, company, and Anna!!!!

Great atmosphere, enhanced with a no-cover charge live jazz band. My date and I especially enjoyed the eccentric double-bassist!
The food was perfect. I had the lamb, which was perfectly tender and delectable. My date had the salmon and she loved it.
Even though I eagerly award the 5 stars, I do have a few caveats:
1) They only take cash & American Express. No other cards accepted. I had to run to the ATM before we could pay the bill!
2) There is no liquor at the bar, they have wine & beer only. I encourage you to get the wine, and ask the bartender what he recommends. Anybody with a French accent that thick must know their wine, am I right?
3) Try to be seated in the front if you can. We walked in without reservations (I'm not sure if you can make reservations?), and we were seated in the back. The table was fine but it's a bit close to the kitchen, which can get a little stuffy.
4) I'd stick to just you and a date for this joint. Definitely do not go with more than 4 people.
For a place we randomly picked out while walking around East Village in search of a nice dinner, we were overjoyed with how it turned out. It's not even that expensive!

DUDE. I mean, Le DUDE. This place rocks. Literally. They were blasting Led Zeppelin throughout our brunch. It is kind of hard to savor your food when you are banging your head.
But despite my bangover, I enjoyed my cheeseburger very much. Cooked just right, excellent quality meat and tasty. MMM...that IS a tasty burger.

There's a LAAAADY who's sure,
All that GLI-TTERS is go-old,
And she's BUYYYY-ing a stair-way to HEH-HEH-VEN.
Let me first say THIS, friends, one and all: THE COMPANY (i.e., my dining partners) AT THIS ESTABLISHMENT FAR EXCEEDED THE FOOD. I GIVE THEM.... 20,000 STARS. Plus ... one for good luck. They know who they are (some hints: one is extremely snarky, the other was nominated for a certain Yelp hotness award. That's all I'm sayin'. You won't get more outta me, I swear. Leave me alone. I may have to bitch-slap you if you don't. Cut it out. Not tellin'. Nuh uh. LEAVE ME ALONE, DAMMIT).
First I had, lemme see, a salad with warm goat cheese. It was fine, although pretty unremarkable. Yes, the goat cheese was warm. There was salad.
Next, I had a bowl of FRENCH onion soup, which, given the whole idea that this establishment is of the frog-ese (i.e., and theretofore FRENCH) variety, would probably be a good bet. My reasoning: FRENCH restaurant/bistro=good FRENCH onion soup. Right? FRENCH+FRENCH=likelihood of goodness. Or, to put it in the form of a syllogism:
Major premise:
FRENCH restaurants have a high likelihood of having good FRENCH onion soup.
Minor premise:
Jules is a FRENCH restaurant
Conclusion:
Jules has a high likelihood of having good FRENCH onion soup.
Are you following me here?
No such freakin' luck, peoples. This was one freakin' mediocre bowl o' soup, lemme tell ya, and that's a rough price to pay for drinking something that basically looks like what I imagine resembles the contents of a septic tank. Yes, I know this is gross, but I'm just sayin'. There should be a flavor payoff. THERE SHOULD BE A FLAVOR PAYOFF, DAMMIT.
Other than that, the ambiance was lovely. The Led Zeppelin they played was rad. They even played Stairway to Heaven. And last night I went to karaoke which is why I was singing when I first wrote this review. Did I mention that I would rather jam red hot screwdrivers in my eyeballs than go to karaoke? Yeah, well, I got hornswoggled. It couldn't be helped. Major digression? Yes.
They have the obligatory yellow painted walls, the red pleather (aka, psuedo leatheroid) banquettes with the table numbers adorning them, and walls festooned with distressed mirrors. Ah, yes. Oui, oui, monsieur. BUT THAT'S WHERE THE RESEMBLANCE TO A GOOD FRENCH RESTAURANT ENDS.
John Bonham kicks some serious ass. Jules, eh, not so much.

I'm perplexed as to how to convey the right kind of good but not super, average, but not subpar-ness of the food.
The atmosphere gets the 5. The food gets the 3.5.
Lovin the very warm, Europe-y feeling here. Heck we were seated by someone with a French accent. How much more authentic can you get? I mean really?
We got there for a late (4pm) Sunday brunch. Be it known that the brunch kitchen closes at 4:30. And despite their Frenchness the service was excellent and polite. I'm not overwhelmed by the food, yet I'd choose this St Marks sophisticated eatery before some of the other shall remain nameless more well known brunch spots on the street.

Jules has been a staple in my life since 1996. The first time I happened upon this gem was during my first hot July in NYC at the age of 16. A friend of mine was playing a gig at the then located Sine on St. Marks and we discovered Jules and dropped in for a quick refreshing dessert of peeled pick grapefruit and light chocolate ice cream and I was forever hooked.
Throughout the following years I returned over and over again for every event imaginable: birthdays (mostly), an intimate dinner with a friend, date...and I have never been disappointed.
The food is always superb. I highly recommend any fish dish they offer, but particularly when they serve a grilled bass. Their steaks are fantastic and their wine list is impressive.
Most importantly, they offer consistently wonderful jazz every night and the atmosphere can be whatever you want it to be --either casual or romantic or lively. They offer it all.
cool name, bad food.

French food with American Jazz. Good food, but not inexpensive. Music is good, but loud (difficult to maintain a conversation) - during intermission, you will be asked to give a tip for the musicians. Crowded and VERY Hot. The menu implies ONLY French wines; with the dessert menu we learned that they also serve beer and some mixed drinks. Accepts ONLY cash and American Express.

The perfect pick-me-up from that Saturday night out is brunch at Jules. The live jazz band just gets your heart singing sweet nothings in no time. Food is excellent and service is good. Live band is outstanding although they might be a bit loud if your ears are still ringing from the night before. Cute, quaint and totally French. One con: the seating is PACKED even for small restaurant standards. Don't go if being a mere 4 inches from your neighbor would scare you. Regardless, this place is a real gem.
If you want to impress a date, Jules Bistro is the way to go. The overall decor of this bistro was understated but romantic. Live Jazz music, who cannot love that?Escargot and foie gras, so delicious. My lovely boyfried brought me here on our 5th date, and I felt like I had a lady and the tramp moment with him. (teehee) I love this place, such a great memory.

I'm sure it's a wonderful place, but my experience happened to be pretty shitty. I ordered white wine and it came warm so I politely sent it back in exchange for some other drink. The 2nd drink came and it tasted awful. It tasted moldy, musty and, yep, warm once again. Ugh! Some drinks are meant to be served chilled... A manager came by to ask what was wrong and I explained what the problem was and he seemed really pissy about it. Seriously, feedback is constructive! Managers should welcome them and use it as an opportunity to improve their service. . . Not get all huffy and defensive about it. I will say, I liked the live jazz and the space overall, but we ultimately , as patrons, go for the experience... and no matter how nice the set up is, if you leave with a bad taste in your mouth, you're probably going to spend your time and money elsewhere!

I came here last night for dinner with a gal pal. You walk through velvet red curtains into a really busy place. It's really packed with a lotta tables with diner's practically sitting on each other's laps.
The decor tries to have that French bistro sorta theme going with French language street signs and posters on the walls. It's cozy but not so intimate due to the live jazz band playing that forces the dining patrons to speak above the music.
We were seated immediately upon arrival. Like I said, the tables are sooooo close together, we were practically having dinner with our neighbors. It took some time for our server to greet us and to take our orders. We placed our orders with her as soon as she brought water to our table because we didn't want to wait for her to come back.
We both ordered the French Onion soup which tasted rather BLAND and tasteless. I had the Octopus salad which was also lacking in taste. My friend had the Mussels & Fries. The mussels were alright bit the fries were a bit too soggy.
The place was packed and so our server disappeared and noone came around to clear our dinner plates until I flagged her down. If you are in a rush, definitely don't come here because there doesn't seem to be any organization to their server methods. We were served by various servers which was a bit confusing.

The steak and fries w/ Hollandaise sauce is my guilty weekend brunch pleasure. The atmosphere is classic and French, while still feeling informal.
Also, I must agree with Formica's assessment of the music. "Lipbone" Redding and his band are first class. I also heard a very low-key reggae band here once that was excellent. Having a real piano in the joint always helps...
Good music and mimosas... is there a better way to spend a weekend morning/afternoon?

Aaaah Jules. The atmosphere. The food. The wine. The live music--jazz band is amazing. The service. This is always my go to for friends from out of town or just getting together a group--ask for the round table in the front--it definitely helps the group experience.
The food here is amazing--my personal favorites--escargot and the veal medallions with gorgonzola gnocchi. Oh my. I almost burst into tears one night when I was told they were out of the veal and gnocchi. As for the escargot--I have converted at least half a dozen self proclaimed non snail eating folks. And a very talented chef I know agreed that they were the best she had ever tasted. I mean, what's not to love? Garlicky buttery goodness is hard to beat. The risotto is excellent, the steaks are pretty good and the moules frites are always a solid choice.
What do I not love about you? Okay--only one thing--dining in the winter and being seated in the bench tables to the left of the door. A little chilly/drafty but definitely worth it. You are forgiven.

From the day i moved into my apartment, which is literally 2 doors down from here, i have been meaning to try this place. It pairs two of my favorite things; jazz (which actually i know nothing about but still enjoy) and french bistro food. Well finally 9 months later, i stepped foot in here this past weekend with my girlfriend for a low key meal.
Unfortunately, it was only 5pm on a Sunday and there was no live jazz. But the food more than made up for it. She started off with the foie gras, which is made as a terrine preparation and is delicious, and i had the tuna tartare with an avocado puree on top. Also delicious. It was light, citrusy, and completely satisfying. Moving on the entrees, i had the hanger steak with risotto and she had the steak frites. The steak frites wasn't the best cut of meat, a little difficult to cut, but still tasty. I recommend getting the green peppercorn sauce over the bernaise, it just has a nice kick to it.
Moving on to dessert we had the chocolate fondant, which is essentially the standard molten chocolate cake everywhere else has. But neither of us complained as we fought for every bite.
The service is a little slow, and I can see how on crowded nights the tables will feel claustrophobic, but the place as a whole is still just so charming, and w/ith great food to compliment it, i highly recommend this place.
One appetizer, two entrees, two desserts, one bottle of wine. Total cost: $105.
Total amount of cash in my wallet: $100.
Number of AMEX cards in my wallet: 0
Thoughts that raced through my head when told they only accept AMEX:
1) F*CK!!
2) F*CK ME!!
3) What the f*ck are you looking at?!? (to the woman staring at me from the next table who eavesdropped on my conversation with the waitress when she apologized for not accepting Visa)
4) This is such an appropriate ending to my charity auction date with Julia O. (see my review of Noguchi Museum)
5) M*THERF*CKER!!!
The food here is delicious. The mussels and fries were excellent, as were my scallops and risotto. Julia loved the flamiche appetizer. The only thing that was not great was the inedible bread basket, but that's not an unforgivable sin.
Note: the waitress let me leave to go to an ATM while Julia was in the ladies room, and I got back before she did.
If Julia had found out about this, I would have DIED of embarassment.
That was a close call.

Great neighborhood, great food and great jazz. I started the evening with a pouilly fume which was the perfect temperature--not too cold and not too warm. Then I moved onto Salade de Poulpes as my starter--I will always order the octopus if it is offered. The Jarret d'Agneau Rti l'Ail (lamb shank) was so tender that it melted my mouth. I passed on dessert because I could barely move.
Jazz started at 8:30 and it did not overwhelm the dining area; we could still talk and enjoy the music. I would definitely go back when I am in town.

The Food -- It was just a regular French dish. I had the coq au vin. I thought it was OK but nothing special. I've had better coq au vin in this city .....
The music -- music was good. but i hate being prompted to ask for tips for the band. and the worst part was, the party next to me didnt want to give anything and the poor guy just kept standing there and prodded them.
The other problem was, I couldnt actually hear my conversation with my friend because it's very loud in there (and we were sitting in the less noise section!). Its a good place to go if you dont wanna talk to anyone ...
The service -- It wasnt bad but it wasnt anything special either.
Overall -- It was pleasant but nothing so spectacular that will compel me to go back again...

Jules is a little claustrophobic, but the bands are decent and they let you smoke in either of the two (very small) patio areas. (So if you're not a smoker, outside seating is probably not a smart idea.)
Food and wine selection: A+. The filet mignon was thick but tender; nothing is too heavy, and the band was cool too.
I wasn't crazy about dessert; my peach melba was essentially one halved peach -- which was impossible to find -- drowning in whipped cream.
Major criticism: only cash and AmEx? You gotta be fucking kidding. Okay, it's a free country, but couldn't you at least put a sign on the door (suggested text: "AmEx or you're fucked!")?

This place gets four stars based on the live music! We bought a CD it was so great- "Lipbone" Redding- Hop the Fence. My favorite is Dogs of Santiago. He plays the trumpet with his lips and that is why it's called Lipbone.
Oh yeah, this is a restaurant review.... I had the lamb shank which was excellent! Matt's chicken choice was not such a winner. We had wine by the glass and their Bordeaux selection was excellent. I sent the Pinot back- it was not good at all! We split the endive salad which was most excellent.
The waiter was moderately polite and the service was fairly efficient.
I still think that the best reason to go here is for the live music.
Be warned: have CASH in your pocket unless you have an American Express card!!

Jules has to be one of the best date places in town:
Atmosphere
Charming French bistro with sexy lighting. The jazz was great but mellow enough to allow conversation in most of the space.
Service
Very polite and for the most part, attentive.
Food
The food is well beyond what you would expect in this price range. It's truly terrific. The escargot has spoiled me for all other uses of butter and garlic...I just need to have it on a snail now. If I recall correctly, it was only $9. Given how good it was, I sacked up and tried some pate, which was highly enjoyable. But nothing could prepare me for the barbeque ribs that would ensue. I know ribs. Ribs are my death row meal. These were as good as any other New York restaurant's interpretation of the piggy rib. If you have the means, I highly suggest you pick some up. Save some room for the sorbet at the end.
LAZY SUDNAY: First, no service for twenty minutes. Then, seltzer with fly in it. Fly removed, seltzer replaced with Sprite. Then, finally, a glass of seltzer. Serge Gainsbourg blaring about seven notches too loud on a Sunday afternoon. We could barely talk over the music. Then, three different people rush over to tell us the kitchen is closing. That they were good at. No vibe. Terrible french fries. Merci, non!
I take exception in negative reviewing because I believe they are counterproductive for your stomachal karma; but a Libra must obey blind justice. Jules Bistro was one of my first "Yelp stamped" outings. I came on a cold February day, perfect for a cozy date @ a non-pretentious French Bistro. There was a hint of things to come as soon as we arrived at the door. My companion asked the maitre'd if he was French just for conversation's sake. He responded with an attitude: "No! I'm a Parisian" Ookay, please, show us to our seats.
The waitress was nice, the decor was yes, there was live jazz playing, the lighting was not dim but dark, almost XIX century gaslight like. The chairs were a little too crickety, and I was afraid that if I fidgeted about, they were going to brake. All these could have been dumped into the "blind eye" section of my frontal lobe, but the food.... that's where you SHOULDN'T have missed Jules!
We ordered champagne and it was flat. We re-order and it came flat again. Not cool. Order a third time and it was "okay" but not great. Perhaps you should have watched that temperature switch on the cooler Jules.
Her platter arrives promptly after ordering. She ordered a Coq au Vin with Parpadella which I didnt sample, so I can't comment on. I would have sampled it though, if I knew that my platter was going to arrive 20 minutes AFTER my partner had already finished hers. (And she wanted to wait for mine to come, but I prompted her to start since she was obviously starving and foaming at her platter) When my platter finally arrived (Pan seared salmon fillet) It was a total disappointment. No taste, absolutely no texture (it fell to shreds, or should I say crumbs as soon as I lay my fork on it) and the parsley was meager, trite, deceitful....
I'll give it another chance and try their hanger steak, but until then, Jules will have Two wait.

A good place for subterranean dining -- casual atmosphere, good food, fair prices. It can get very congested and loud, as there is barely any space between tables...the last time I was here, I scanned the room for the fire exit...
The french onion soup is amazing. The smoke outside can be a bit overwhelming, so if you have someone in your party that is completely adverse to smoke, avoid outdoor seating.

A lunchtime review (so no live jazz, etc.):
The food wasn't particularly amazing (had moules provencale and the chardonnay), but I just really enjoyed my time here. I sat in one of two outdoor spaces they have - the one that is somewhat secluded from the street, where greenery shades you just enough to let the sun through and at the same time make you feel you are in a private cove. Hardly anyone else was around during my late lunch, and you just felt content to be there relaxing to your $3.50 wine (a special lunch price -- also the moules were only $8.50, as are many other lunch specials).
My mussels did take long to get there, but when I asked for a second glass of wine, the waittress offered it on the house because of the slowness of my food. That was very nice.
I just love the East Village in the day time -- perhaps because I mostly spend time in it at night.
I am not going to rave about the food but the wine is just fantastic. Mostly (only?) French wines - not the popular kind, just the good stuff. The owner really is French (unlike at Balthazar for instance) so he's straight to the point on that level. The waiters are lovely, and they don't mind if you just sit there sharing a bottle of wine or two over jazz, no food involved. In fact, they'll sometimes even offer port or whatever other liquor they have behind the bar, and chat with you while they're closing up. Jules makes me miss smoking though- it was a great place to smoke, right out there on the terrace...

A real French Bistro in the East Village, the decor is dark and inviting but it can get a bit noisy and loud. The food is pure Parisian choices well prepared and the service can be a bit rushed when it gets crowded but overall a very good option for a French dinner with friends. They also have a nice selection of wines, which does not help the noise volume !!!!

Wow, that was awesome. We got stuck in the rain and walked somebody to the subway and ended up getting here 30 minutes late for our reservation. For all the claims here of rude staff, they apologized profusely for having to give away our table, and got us a new one in less than 5 minutes.
Had the Moules Frites (good), Tuna Tartare (ok). Apparently the Trout and the Onion Soup were also good. Fries were not very good. Staff was very nice. Unfortunately they don't have profiteroles, but I was stuffed anyways.
