My favorite neighborhood restaurant. I think some reviewers are expecting too much! It's a simple place with good food at good prices. My favorite dishes are the carnitas plate (unfortunately only available on Fridays), chile verde plate, fish tacos, quesadilla a la jesus, and the super burrito (it's huge!). The portions are large enough that even my guy friends will get half orders instead of full orders.
Popular place for birthdays. Somehow, there's always someone celebrating a bday literally every time I go. They turn the lights down and play a really great version of the birthday song over the loudspeaker. You just have to hear it to appreciate it.
Juan's is a long-standing Mexican sit-down joint that's tucked away in the residential area near the freeway. It's near impossible to see from the main street, but you'll know you've reached your destination by its neon lights and old school eclectic decorations.
You're greeted with a duo of fresh chips and salsa as you get settled into your seats and peruse the menu. The flour tortilla chips were light and crispy and the corn tortilla chips offer your standard vehicle for salsa scooping. I was surprised to find the salsas were bland and not even mildly spicy - it definitely could be kicked up a notch with a little heat.
We ordered the tamale dinner special and the carne asada super burrito for two.
Tamale dinner was disappointing. Again, very bland in flavor and the meat was dry. Beans and rice were an ok complement to the dish, but couldn't salvage the tastelessness of the dish.
WOW. Carne asada super burrito. When they say super, they mean MASSIVE! What is lacks in extravagant taste, it makes up in size. Burritophiles beware, this super burrito will put up a good fight for even the biggest of appetites.
This place can get pretty packed during dinner and service was a bit slow and inattentive at times. We had to ask twice for hot sauce and our water glasses frequently reached empty before anybody came by to notice and refill.
Juan's is a bit pricey for your everyday cravings, but it offers a nice throwback experience to Mexican dining.
I haven't been here for many years and was in the neighborhood.
I've always wondered why Juan's Place has such a following, so we thought we'd give it another try.
Had to beg for service, blah salsa, greasy fried flour tortilla chips, mediocre enchiladas served with cold dry refrieds. Only reason I gave 2 stars is because they have Birra on the menu.
Not my idea of decent Mexican food. I've eaten better off the taco truck that comes to our campus. There are so many better places to eat in the local area. Some things don't improve with time.
People don't believe me, but you should. I only speak the truth. There are 3 schools of Mexican food - 1) Mexican food...from Mexico...duh?, 2) San Diego Mexican Food and 3) Los Angeles Mexican Food. Both the LA and SD schools are white washed...let's be honest, but LA is lighter, less greasy while the SD is heavier, greasier and meatier. Juan's is of the SD school. They just put STUFF in their food. It is good...don't get me wrong. I would cut a fool who tried to steal one of my nachos, but I would give away their burittos. They just put all sorts of stuff in it...bell peppers, onions make sense....but mushrooms? That was a first. I'll keep going back though. I love the Mom and Pop feel, the weird decor and the Sangria.
My friend suggested this place with the endorsement of "this is my favorite Mexican place outside of San Diego." They give you flour and corn chips when you sit down. Sweet wood paneling too.
I actually recommend the wine margaritas. When the waiter told us they only had wine margaritas we both sat there indecisively for a second. My friend declined, but I got one -- it was pretty good. Seemed a lot stronger than I expected.
Been going to this place for years - I don't know what constitutes "authentic Mexican food", but this is no yuppie, California cuisine, vegan-friendly joint. I love the massive Super Burrito, especially with the carnitas they make on Fridays! Prices are reasonable, the waiters are all old guys wearing guayabera shirts.
This rating is solely for the the flour tortillas. The best I've ever had b/c they're fried in lard :D
Consistency of the tortillas are light, airy, and crispy. I could make a meal out of these alone. Best of all, the home made tortillas are bottomless!
Sigh, heart attack just waiting to happen.
Don't mess with the staff or they'll crack you in the skull with a tire iron! BRUTAL! Haha! Go, Juan's! If you don't know what I'm talking about, do a news search for Juan's. Jesus Cristo!
Juan's is your basic, homey, hearty, family-run Mexican food joint. Good portions and reasonable prices. I've received major attitude in the past from a waitress who is the granddaughter of the owner. She actually had the nerve to say, "I'm the owner's granddaughter" as if it excused her bad behavior when she argued with me about getting my order wrong TWICE. I don't give a shit who you are, get my order right and don't argue with me to try to act like it wasn't your mistake when you get it wrong. I always order the same exact thing each time I come in, lame-o. I wrote a letter to the owner about it and he apologized and gave me a $50 gift certificate so I forgave them. I just don't go in as often because I'm not up for paying for a side of attitude with my food. To go, please!
Wine margaritas? That's pretty weak. But they have affordable pitchers of beer. All in all, I really, really like Juan's and definitely recommend it. It's one of those places that you act like you don't like but really do love when it comes down to it. It's got character, that's for damn sure! Just don't piss anyone off unless you want your skull cracked.
As a visitor from Texas, this place rocked the house! But let me tell you, when I got back home I had a hard time explaining that Juan's Place was a restaurant and not someone's house where they cook really good food.
We had kind of a large party with 7 people total but they were able to seat us right away. And almost immediately we had chips and salsa bowls on the table. Never did my salsa bowl run dry! And the pitchers of margaritas... danger for me but I wasn't driving :) And the beer was ice cold.
The food was almost as good as what we have here in Texas, only taking away fractions of a point for sparing use of jalapenos. The enchiladas were tasty and the black beans were perfect. Chile rellenos looked very tasty. The tacos al carbon and al pastor were delicious. Flautas were yummy.
Did I mention they let us dance around in sombreros and pretend like were movie stars!?!
Summary based on many dinners over years:
--old style, decent Mexican food
--locally popular
--easy parking
--friendly, attentive service
--pretty inexpensive for mass quantities of food
--deep fried everything
--cheap beer
I don't come here much anymore, but went for a birthday party. The waiters did the whole birthday bit, including ornamental sombreros for photos. I didn't pay, so I don't know if they dinged us for bringing our own cake. Who cares.
The deep fried flour torilla's chip are the bomb! Yes, I know they're not healthy, but we don't exactly come here for fruits and vegetables, do we! Occassionally it's OK to splurge Suzy. Oh, and they go great with their homemade gaucamole! YUM! They may use lard and grease, but it's old style decent food. The portions are great and the quality is good.
Their Super Burritos are humungous. Enough for three meals! My friend and I split one and we still had left-over. I've had the crab enchaladas before. They were OK. I think their basic chicken or beef anything (burrito, fajitas, or enchilada's) are better. Very good sizes, good service, and they give us 10% off since we work across the street. We show them our badge and we get 10% off. Good Times.
I'm friends with these mexican girls in one my classes who claim that Juans Place serves "white wash" mexican food, but I love their food. From the chips and salsa they serve you once your seated to the chicken enchiladas i've been ordering since middle school. I grew up eating mexican food here and never once have I left unhappy. I am a mexican food person so i've been to almost every referred taqueria and restaurant in the bay area and Juans Place definitly takes the cake. Their portions are huge and its always good to take food home to eat later. You will not be disappointed.
Don't you just hate it when you re-visit a place that you really enjoyed and it has bombed. Well, say no more. Truth be told.
I'm finding it very difficult to make the effort to get "into" this so I'll keep it short. Look at my star rating. In the mean-time allow me to take care of this gut-bomb please.
Oh, did I mention $15 for the enchilada combo plate and a glass of water. I'm over you Senor Juan.
Comprende?

Great place to bring a group and celebrate a birthday! Good mexican food and large portions. I love… Read more »
Juan's is hella beans, cheese, tortilla, and chips whichever style you want. It's not amazing but if you're rediculously hungry the portions are huge. This place is about quantity not quality. Servicio is good when they know you especially when I go with my cowoker.
So I may not be familiar with authenticity or whatever, but I like to think I know good food when I eat it, and the food here at Juan's Place is really good! The first time I had food from Juan's was when we got it for a work meeting and then again when we went to eat in for our manager's birthday. I LOVE the complimentary chips, guacamole, and salsa here! It is all made at the restaurant. The chips come in both flour and corn made and is deep fried. The guacamole is delicious with chunks of tomatoes, and the two types of salsa, one green one red, goes well with EVERYTHING! I ordered the super burrito... and it is HUGE! Considering that I filled myself up with chips and salsa, I was only able to eat like 1/5 of it. But even if I didn't, I doubt I can finish more than half. It is soo good! I really like their tortilla as well.
The restaurant has two separate dining rooms and another room with a bar. There is a LOT of decorations but it gives off a really festive look. I love the pictures they have on the walls, from the black and white ones from when it first opened, to recent ones. There are also signed pictures from local sport teams, players from our Raiders and 49ers, and even one from the actor Matt Dillon, saying personally to Juan that this is the best Mexican restaurant around this area. The employees here are very friendly and provide you with fast and attentive service. You will definitely leave this place satisfied and with major food coma!
the search for the perfect mexican in the east bay continues.... Juan's place, while it has the look and feel of a perfect Mexican joint, lacked the complexity of flavors (and Heat) I desire. They were VERY generous with portions but prices were high (30$ for 1/2 plates!) and all fried items were VERY greasy. They also missed totally on the enchalada sauce which is my test for all new Mexican joints.... they also lacked my requirement of camarones a la diabla (shrimp diablo).I have decided that I am going to have to venture into Richmond or Fruitvale (Oakland) for the good stuff. Stay tuned.
Juan's Place es el mejor comida mexicano en Berkeley! For the llaronas that don't like a loud, festive atmosphere with good food & good peeps, try Uptight Taco down the street.
VIVA JUAN'S PLACE!
ps- don't eff with the wait staff...you might get smacked upside the head with a pipe!
I'm (by chance, not by choice) a SoCal girl, so admittedly I live, breathe, and bleed Mexican food. So as I take my yearly summer sojourn back up to Berkeley, where my heart stays 365 days a year, I gladly manage to convince two of my foodie friends to accompany me on my grand return to Juan's Place, where my car-less college buddies and I used to master the ins and outs of the AC Transit Line 9 bus in order to get our butts down here to enjoy some real Mexican grub.
I desperately miss Berkeley, and although I have Mexican restaurants a-plenty at my fingertips down south, I just cannot deny the homely, welcoming warmth that is Juan's. The service is second to none, from the drink recommendations to the various to-go boxes/bags/containers gladly given to us at the end of the night. For all the food we received, the prices can't be beat. This isn't your standard whole-grain-fed, organic, vegan/vegetarian Berkeley-type establishment, and I absolutely love it that way. Pile on my lard-fried flour tortilla chips and my creamy enchilada sauce and my homemade salsas and my rice and beans galore.
I chose the chicken mole (whole order), while Natalie M. opted for a crab enchilada and Angie B. got a crab enchilada and a chile relleno. We also got a pitcher of half-strawberry half-mango wine margaritas to split, and flour and corn tortilla chips with their amazing salsas and guacamole to start with. Everything came out in a timely manner on huuuuge and warm plates, along with their flour and corn tortillas on the side. Haha, just writing this review and recalling the moment of glory when we received our orders is making my mouth water!
Juan's is solid, tasty, filling, great for leftovers (I swear we walked out with more food that we'd actually eaten), and a true institution of my Berkeley days. It's probably been about 7-8 years since I've been back, and Juan's has always held a very special spot in my heart. It's good to know things haven't changed all that much :)
This review is just for any vegans/vegetarians who might be wranlged into going here as I was.
Apparently, the fried flour tortillas are not vegan. I confirmed that the refried beans ARE vegan.
The portions are enormous which I guess people like (I found it way overboard).
My favorite thing about this place was the decor. The walls are covered with a lot of random stuff including a lot of Mexican nationalist heroes.
If you are not forced to go here, as a vegan I would avoid.
Today, my friends at work and I went to the Berkeley Humane Society to drop off some pet food donation and hopped across the street to Juan's afterwards. This is my favorite lunch time activity. Pet the kitties and go to Juan's. The food is good. I like their enchiladas. I had the crab verde enchiladas today. It was good. Nothing spectacular, but consistent. And the service is ALWAYS great.
I love Juan's Place for their quick friendly service, their complimentary chips and salsa (the crunchy flaky ones are my favorite!), and then their incredibly delicious chicken "red sauce" enchiladas (the best enchiladas I've ever had). The red sauce isn't too thick and it enhances the shredded chicken in the enchiladas, which is cooked very well where it's soft enough to fall apart in your mouth. The portions are enormous for the price as well. I really want to try other items on the menu, but I'm always craving the enchiladas every time I go there. I did hear that the Super Burrito is very tasty as well.
Amazing chips and salsa to start the meal (freshly prepared corn and flour)... If you're a fan of Fish Tacos... this is the place for you. Their fish tacos are my favorite! The rest of the fare is better than average... but the fish tacos is where it's at for this place!
Like all Californians, I like to think I know my Mexican food.
I've been here once, some time ago, and my recollection goes like this;
-amazing chips
-cold beer
-massive portions
-decent prices
-and my friend not being able to go because his girlfriend would be so jealous that he went and didn't invite her, he'd never hear the end of it.
Such a good time, I'm giving five stars for the memories.
I'm a little on the fence about Juan's to tell you the truth. Mexican food is one of my favorite things on the PLANET and I was super excited to eat here. Everyone knows that the BEST Mexican is NEVER those new chic, yuppy places that you'll see pop up around the Marina or other posh areas. No way, JOSE! (I mean, Juan) You always go for the corner neighborhood, dark, dingy place for the good stuff. It's just a fact! The crappier the place and the cheaper the price... the better the food!
Juan's is by far not a dump or anything, but it definitely looks like one of those undiscovered treasures that you get really excited about. I was pretty disappointed when I had their chile relleno. It was pretty much bits of pepper (not poblano) scrambled up with egg and cheese. Not my flavor at all. I prefer the traditional huge overstuffed pepper with more of an egg crust if you will. However, I also had a chicken taco a la carte and that was BOMB!!! Loaded up with all the traditional goodies like sour cream, beans, cheese, seasoned chicken...mmmMMMmm....
Another perk at this place is that they give you two different kinds of chips with your salsa. That was rare and something I've never seen before. They bring you a basket of regular corn tortilla chips as well as a basket of fried FLOUR tortilla chips! They were very good but definitely not the BEST thing for your health! LOL Oh well....If you're gonna go Mexican...you might as well go with GUSTO! haha! I'll try coming back here sometime soon and try other things on their menu.
I first learned about this place from my co-workers, in fact its where they took me on the first day of my job. Granted, its not as good as the hole in the wall restaurants that I grew up with in Colorado, but its pretty good! The service is good, and they give you huge (almost too huge) of portions.
My favorite things are the enchiladas and the chile verde. I feel like when it comes to cheese enchiladas, the cheaper and greasier and covered in cheese and red sauce, the better. The chile verde is pretty good too. Their burritos are absolutely huge.
There are a couple of "weird" things at Juan's. I'm not sure if they're bad "weird" things just "weird. One of them is their ginger ale. It tastes...kinda weird. I can't explain it. The second thing is whenever its someone's birthday, they blast the birthday music throughout the whole restaurant at an obnoxiously loud level, just to make sure EVERYONE knows its someone's birthday.
So I guess what you should take away is, if you don't like to be embarrassed by everyone knowing its your birthday, don't go there on your birthday, or at least don't let Juan's know its your birthday!
Man-friend and I were in the mood for some Nachos. Considering the budget we thought it would be the best that we share.
We asked for black beans not refried. Still satisfying to our taste buds.
Ingredients: Chips, Chicken, Cheddar, Bean (choice), sour cream, tomato. Basic.
*$13
*We asked for black beans not refried.
Service: Exceptional. Not a moment passed when our cups of complimentary water weren't filled as our salsa and chips. Every staff member checked in on us while making rounds.
Huge servings, attentive service, soda refills, and two types of chips to start it all off.
Liked the chicken mole enchilada, the chile relleno had a very unusual looking eggy batter but tasted great. Shrimp enchiladas were NOT done with large, juice shrimp pieces, I'd stay away from this item.
It is fitting that Fantasy Studios is across the street from Juan's because I have been fantasizing about Juan's for some time now. Since Moving away from the Bay Area, I've realized just how good this place is. Not that it is any better than hundreds of other Mexican joints around NorCal, but there is something special about Juan's.
Maybe it is the red viny tablecloths; maybe it is the awesome jukebox; maybe it is their freshly fried tortilla chips. I don't know what it is but I miss it. Their Chile Verde is amazing.
we've heard from everyone, "you want authentic mexican food, go to juan's place, it's the best"...but what to people know?
overall, the food was just okay. it seemed kinda bland, which isn't what i look for in mexican food. and at the end, the total came up to a bit more than what we both thought it was worth.
so yeah, the food is pretty authentic but i'll go for taste over authentic any day.
Everything on the menu is good. I love that you can get flour or corn tortilla chips (the flour ones are terrific.) You can order a half plate dinner, and you'll still have leftovers. The burritos must weigh 5 pounds...well maybe not that much. But they're huge. Don't forget to try the sangria.
to be taken lightly.
For the prices, the ratio of food per dollar is amazing at Juan's. The food is good too....well.....sort of. I've eaten here a few times and unfortunately, I regret it every time. Its one of those places when you are there and eating, everything is great for the first 5 bites, but then you realize..... I should stop now, but you dont.
The homemade flour tortilla chips are my personal favorite part about this place.
Everything else, is a well, its comfort americana-mexican food. Lots of colby/cheddar cheese and lots of enchilada sauce.
I'd get a half order and split it with someone.
Yes, the chips are AMAZING. Salsa? Fabulous. But everything else was BOR-ING. My pork super burrito was nothing special, but edible enough. I tasted the cheese enchildadas and was even less impressed. The beans are flavorless poopy piles of manteca.
HOWEVER: The service is wonderful. Our waiter was prompt and friendly and someone even gave us ten percent off coupons on our way out. This is obviously a neighborhood favorite and I've heard many friends rave about Juan's.
I'll probably return given my coupon, the fab chips, and its proximity to the Berkeley Humane Society. Yes, I'm a sad cat lady who goes to animal shelters just to fondle the kitties and puppies and talk to them in a lame baby voice. Pathetic.
I am very full. The reason that I am very full was because Juan's did it to me. First thing you may notice as you walk up to the front door is that the bars on the windows are creatively designed to look like decoration all while keeping the bad guys out at night.
First, you get two kinds of nacho chips, flour and corn, both are good, both are deep fried.
The place is pretty big so you should get a table to sit at. The menu has your typical items, burritos, enchiladas, tacos, fajitas, etc. but they also have specials. I failed to order a special of the day, but I am told that I would thoroughly enjoy it. Today's special was bbq ribs ($11). However, I ordered the two fajita burritos ($14) with chicken and steak. Now, the choice on the menu says chicken or steak, but I went out on a limb and asked for one of each. When I received my meal, it was huge, heavy and hot. What more could you ask for? Let me tell you. I began to eat thinking that I had one chicken fajita burrito and one steak fajita burrito, so I began eating the first one which I thought was chicken. Then I began to realize that...they had mixed the chicken and steak together!!! What a novel concept give the people what they want! Don't make them choose which fajita burrito to eat first, eat what you can and take the rest home! If you dare! You'll take your bites and not want to stop.
Also, while I was eating, an eating contest broke out. It was one for one. There was sweating, there were tears, there was mental toughness. All in all, it was a good battle, good effort all around. If you must know, the food of choice was the crab enchildas, one with red sauce, the other with green sauce.
Anyway, can't say enough about this place. You should go and check it out. The food is large and in charge.
I've been here several times with friends and it's the perfect place to meet up as a group. I've loved the food and drinks every time I've been there. It has a fun atmosphere and has exceptional service. I will definitely be back.
Juan's is an authentic Mexican restaurant. It's not a taco truck, it's not a quick and dirty burrito shop right next to campus. It's not Taco Bell.
That's why I find it amusing that many of the reviews here (particularly the negative ones) are from people who ordered a Super Burrito. Don't get me wrong: I LOVE a good Super Burrito. But the burrito is an invention of the American people. It doesn't come from original Mexican cuisine.
That's why I order quesadillas or enchiladas whenever I come to Juan's. When in Rome, right?
I have found the dish that I love and I order everytime I come back. A la Jesus Quesadillas! If I were to judge Juan's on this dish alone, I would give them 5 stars.
Their salsa is yummy and the people are friendly. The service has always been pretty good and I love the atmosphere. It's one of the places I miss most about the east bay.
This is my favorite local Mexican restaurant! Even though my rating is influenced by it's proximity to my work and my old apartment, it is worthy of making a special trip. You will never leave this place hungry!
They serve very large portions, even at lunch, of traditional classics that are truly authentic. The environment, with old black classic diner chairs and various paraphernalia on the walls, just makes the perfect ambiance for any occasion.
They have the best fish tacos (with cabbage) and the fresh flour chips are phenomenal. I have to be careful not to fill up on the 2 kinds of chips and salsa that are routinely served.
The service is also always really nice. When I lived down the street, they knew my face as I would make an effort to practice my Spanish. Nothing like a "gringa" with a bad accent to make a lasting impression (although it has helped when my Argentine grandmother has come here with me).
They also have a bar with a pretty good selection that other locals seem to enjoy. Though be warned that since it is family run, they are closed on some holidays.
So even after a week of lots of good Mexican food, I thoroughly enjoyed my dinner here yesterday. And I am so looking forward to enjoying my left-overs tomorrow.
For some reason the usual flavor of Mexican food is missing, from the chips to dips, and everything else in between.
Like most everyone's raving about, their flour tortilla chips is pretty amazing, but the lack of flavor from the dips is just plain sad, did I just dip those in water?
My order of pork tostada is huge. But then again, when I dive in, there's no zing to it, just ok, nothing memorable. Pork cook to perfection, refried bean not soggy, rice is good, only thing missing is some flavor! Sad!
Big sloppy plates of taco/enchilada/chile relleno/tostada Mexican food with rice and beans. Good chips and guacamole. Generous portions and constant water refills. Fast service. Not gourmet but way better than the chains.
We're through Juan! Consider this your Dear Juan letter.
Like how bad can you fuck up a cheese enchilada? I'll tell you how bad and I didn't even order it. My friend ordered it and it was seriously a folded up, greasy, corn tortilla smothered in Colby/Jack cheese & red sauce.
It looked like a quesadilla spontaneously combusted or perhaps the enchilada had diarrhea from all that cheese inside and just let it gush out of each end all over the plate.
It's so sad how patrons are now terrified to send shit back to the kitchen for fear of something gross happening to the alternative dish. My friend refused to send it back, because she's a germ-o-phobe (like me) and the idea of Juan's spit ending up in her mouth sounded nastier than a plate full of melted cheese and a greasy tortilla.
I picked over my carne asada taco in the pre-fabricated shell that was sooo store bought.
We guzzled wine margaritas and a couple glasses of white wine to make up for the crap-assed cuisine. How I can manage to sit here, at work, sober as a nun is beyond me. Maybe it's because their wine is cheap? Who knows.. all I know is I'm sober on a Friday afternoon, my boss is on va-cay and I really needed to enjoy this day a lot more than I did.
Boo Juans, you SUCK!
Your beans suck bigtime and..well, those flour chips are stellar and earns you an additional star. But, you in whole, as a restaurant and the prices you charge for every pickin thing.. sucks. Service sucked too and lil Ms muffin top at the front sat there eating the whole time instead of helping out during a busy lunch hour.
I totally I should have listened to my friend and went to California Pizza Kitchen instead.
Never again..never ever ever. We're done Juan! Fini!

Ok, an update: I haven't been back, but I think that I was too harsh with the two stars. They never claim to be vegetarian-friendly, and I think that the chip incident grossed me out too much.
I'd give this place two and a half stars if I could, however.
Heed the chip warning, however. If you're vegetarian, you can't eat the flour tortilla chips. The corn tortilla chips aren't bad, though.
And, for what it's worth, if you're a vegetarian (I've learned all of this the hard way), always ask about rice, enchalada sauce (especially red), beans (refried definitely, but double check with whole beans, too), flour tortillas and shells, and tamales (even if they are filled w/ veggies, or for dessert, they may be made with lard).
