Damn. Hella yelp-hate up in here.
Well, I dunno what to say. I like Juanita's. A lot too! I like the way this place feels so homey - the decor isn't going to knock you off your feet but I mean come on. You're paying $7.75 for an enchilada plate, this isn't Gary Danko.
Aside the food, one of the best things about this place is that I feel so comfortable here. It's not pretentious, I can come in here in my sweats and a hoodie after a hard day and just be relaxed and eat without being bothered. The spare seating is the best; it gives you a sense of having your own little bubble in a restaurant where you can eat, talk, and feel like you're left alone to enjoy what you're there for: food!
The boyfriend and I have been here 3 times within the past two weeks because I've been on an enchilada kick lately; he's been coming here his entire life and I can see why. Plates always come out hot, every square inch of it is covered in food, and it always hits the spot.
The past few weeks have been crazy busy and I absolutely love coming to Juanita's to unwind. It's much more tame compared to La Penca down the street and it feels so much...ugh, better.
The prices are reasonable for being on Park and the hours can't be beat. I love this place and will definitely keep coming back until I'm sick of it. But I highly doubt that'll be anytime soon! -

I hope I got the right place... my boyfriend (at the time), his friend, and I came here for brunch on a Sunday and went for the buffet.
There wasn't a whole lot for me to eat, since it was a lot of meat, but the standard fare of beans was tasty, and they had pan dulce and a few juices to drink. The meat stuff did look good, so I think it's a good deal if you're going to eat a lot of that. -
Review from Brian D.
Stopped in for lunch today on Monday January 30th, 2012 - to a mostly empty restaurant and quickly was offered a table. They immediately brought out two free baskets of chips and salsa.
After reviewing the menu - we ordered the two enchiladas and taco plate along with two cheese enchiladas and a side of guacamole. The food had huge portions but quality wise was standard - rice and beans were tasty but nothing overally spectacular. With a coupon - buy 1 entree get 1 free - from an entertainment book with tip - lunch was $15 for two people which we felt was a steal.
On an amusing side note - a local reporter for an Alameda Newspaper came in at lunch looking to get the chefs info so they could write an article. However, the manager on duty - did not seem interested as she felt it was a sales pitch. The manager took the info down and placed it next to the register by the bar - but didn't seem very interested and rather suspicious of the reporter. -

We sit down, they bring us chips & salsa, chips taste old, salsa is watery and bland, wife orders number 5, I order Juanita's plate with shrimp, the shrimp was good, and that's all we can say about that except that there are lot more restaurants in Alameda.
Sorry Juanita, I think you can do better -

Chicken and shrimp fajitas? The BOMB. The chips and salsa here is good. Never a wait. Just come un, sit down and order. Service is nice. We came in and didn't even have to look at the menu. Well, "somebody" did, cause they was being SO indecisive, lol. Park St parking sucks bigtime, so try the parking lot in the back. Thumbs up here..

The service is good, but the food is bland and unappealing. The margaritas are awful. If you're in Alameda, La Penca Azul (formerly La Piñata) is a much better restaurant.

As the reigning Duke, I'll throw in my review.
This place is my go to spot for just having beers with friends without the hassle of a crowded bar on Park Street. Alameda is seriously lacking in the drink deals department and anywhere you go doesn't have any ongoing specials. This is where Juanita's saves the day: they have buckets of 6 Coronas or Pacificos for the low, low price of $12.50. The bars across the street are a bit smoky and loud for my preference so it is nice to be able to sit down and hear each other talk. The margaritas may come out a little sweet and the food is in the 3.5 star range. -

I have been going to this place for years. Great late night place after you shut down at Hob Nob or Lucky 13. Quality of the food is decent. In addition, pretty much a full bar if you arrive before 2ish. I have had the combo plates, nachos, fried chicken, burritos, tacos. Yeah, its not real Mex, but who cares @ 2 in the am. I make it here every time I visit my parents in Alameda (4x/year).

Had a groupon here, so thought it was worth the try. They advertise the best margaritas in town, but they are serving a cheap over sweet corn syrup mixure with a little tequila in it. The service was good though, and the prices reasonable. There's better Mexican out there.

I swung by with Billy (shocker!) before catching a movie (The Green Lantern, which explains why I needed a big margarita).
We came by around 10 and the crowd was a little sparse.
I shared some cheesecake and a margarita, but didn't get to check out the entrees, so please keep that in mind.
The margarita wasn't blended enough (i HATE ice chunks that clog up my straw) but was fairly cheap. Cheesecake was store bought but was something in my stomach that I needed.
Service was slow, but the uniforms were really cute.
It's good for a quick drink, but I'm pretty sure that's the best they can do based on other reviews. -

This place sticks out in my mind. Noting the one star, it's for all the wrong reasons.
My boyfriend and I came here one day, randomly selecting it as we drove by, because (A) We wanted Mexican food, and (B) We had already been to La Penca Azul, down the street. Well, we should have just stuck to the tried and true spot.
The fajitas were bland and the sides seemed like they came from a can. It just was not good. Service was prompt and friendly, but man, they just did not have good food. Maybe other dishes are better, but based on my one meal there, I'm not even remotely tempted to give it another shot. -

This place has sentimental value for my husband and his family in particular, because they used to come to this restaurant over 25 years ago when they lived near the naval base. Even now, when his parents come to town to visit us, we always go to Juanita's, specifically for one thing: the enchilada sauce.
For us, the enchilada sauce is really the main reason to come to Juanita's, but it's a good reason. It's homemade and flavorful, and my husband has ordered the exact same thing for the past 8792834273 times we've been here: 2 cheese enchiladas, rice, beans. Then we leave, after purchasing 2 containers of the enchilada sauce. No, not the pint container. No, not the quart container. We have them pack it into these giant containers that their crema comes in. It must be a good gallon+ of sauce. I freeze those 2 suckers, and then we drive it down to San Diego to his parents' place, and make a huge batch of cheese enchiladas.
I do like their rice and refried beans though. I'm not a big fan of rice, particularly at Mexican joints, but something about the way they cook the rice here makes it tasty. Particularly when I bring home leftover cheese enchilada/rice/beans and microwave that huge ugly mass of squished food -- it doesn't *look* pretty, but it's pretty damn tasty.
I have tried some of their meat dishes (beef enchiladas, beef tacos), and was underwhelmed by their ground beef. However, we do enjoy their super nachos with carnitas. It's a generous portion that is definitely meant to be shared, and their carnitas are decent. The barbacoa is good, and benefits from a squeeze of the accompanying lemon wedges to brighten the taste. I really like their homemade albondigas (meatball) soup, which has a very tasty broth with chunks of veggies (mostly squash + carrots), and 4 giant well-seasoned meatballs. The lime wedges provide a nice tart balance to the savory broth.
They also have a full bar, and a solid horchata. They have some sort of strawberry cake and a chocolate cake, neither of which I've tried, but I have tried their homemade flan and found it calorically delicious. There is also an assortment of Mexican sweet pastries.
SUMMARY: skip anything with ground beef. plate o' cheese enchiladas + rice/beans is simple, tasty, and inexpensive. Get some carnitas nachos if you're extra hungry, sopa de albondigas if it's cold, and wash it down with some horchata or a pitcher of margaritas. -

I'm incredibly confused by the slew of lousy reviews.
This is legit Mexican food.
$12 margarita pitchers that most definitely live up to their claim as the "best margarita in Alameda," and hello! How reasonable is that? Makes for four perfect margaritas.
I got the tostada dinner, with carne asada, which was a TON of food. Two tostadas, plus rice and beans--honestly, I couldn't even get close to finishing it. I was so full that my company practically had to roll me out the restaurant on my side, a la Violet Beauregarde (Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, for those of you that aren't paying attention). Everything was delicious--flavorful and fresh.
I plan to go back when someone else is driving and dive myself into another pitcher or two of margaritas. I imagine the pinball at the Pacific Pinball Museum gets even better after a few too many of those... -

Buffet was good. The costillitas en salsa verde were the best. The beans and rice were good too. I was happy to see chicken strips and fries, cause my son is very picky. My husband liked the menudo. It's not a five star because once we were welcomed in we barley saw the waitress, my husband disagrees with me only because buffet to him means help yourself. I will come back

Not the best Mexican Food in town but not the worst either. Come here with a http://Restuarant.com coupon to get your moneys worth. Try the mexican seafood soup and you will get all the seafood the ocean has to offer in your bowl. Tried the fajita plate and again not the best but much better than your typical franchised wannabe Mexican joint (aka..Chevy's and Chili's).
P.S. Order the $12 Maragarita Pitchers. Order like 5 and you will not even care about the decor or food. -

I resort to eating at Juanita's only if it's so late that everything else in Alameda is closed(don't even get me started about la pinata...) and i'm too drunk to drive to berkeley for thai food.
We always get the veggie burritos with no cheese and they're okay... it's hard to mess up rice & beans in a tortilla. The sauce on top is most definitely from a can though.
The only really strange thing is... the rice tastes like eggs. Like... scrambled egg flavored rice. There are not pieces of egg in it or anything... it just tastes like I'm eating scrambled eggs. Weird. It's not noticeable when it's in the burrito, but when we get a side of rice, egg is all I can taste.
I'm only giving it 2 stars because late-night restaurants with veggie options are hard to find in alameda, and the food is really fucking fast. Probably because its from a can. But whatev... sometimes it's late and you just need to eat. -

I really like this place & they have the best Chimichanga's! Anyway, down the street is, "La Pinata" (La Pinta Azul" & they are always packed, which doesn't give Juanita's very much business, because La Pinata is more popular. I think most people that go to this restaurant are people that's been coming to Juanita's for along time & people find out about it by word of mouth. Give Juanita's a chance if you are in town, cuz they got great food. :)

Alameda, CA
I am generally thrilled with Mexican food in all shapes and sizes, and I rarely leave negative reviews - but the horrible meal I muscled through today warranted it.
The scenario: family in from out of town. Felt like trying something different than Pinata. 5 of us each got something different. An assortment of tacos, fajitas, enchilladas, etc.
Beef was fatty and smelled reminiscent of Alpo canned dog food. Chicken was flavorless and rubbery. Someone must have ordered month-old fried fish, because the restaurant reeked to high heaven.
The wait staff was friendly, and it was close to Tuckers for ice cream, so they have that going for them. Sorry guys. Time for a remodel and menu overhaul. -

The food was pretty good, not great but I'll eat there again, I just won't go out of my way to go there.
Basically, I went there because the Italian restaurant around the corner was closed on Monday,(C'era Una Volta
1332 Park Street Fantastic FOOD!), and I didn't know this little fact....LOL
So my colleague and I headed around the corner and stumbled on Juanita's
The chips / salsa were just ok, too much salt for my taste.
I had the combo two taco's and an enchilada.
Enchilada was fantastic!
The two taco's in both cases the meat was too juicy, (believe it or not), which caused my hard shell tacos to turn to mush by the time I got to the second one. The first was was turning to mush as I eat it, the flavor was there but maybe taco's are not the strong suit there....LOL
The Enchilada and rice was well worth it....
Kind of shabby place, they need a decorator...lol but the Enchilada's are great!!!!! -

Juanita's Restaurant is another example of prime real estate gone to waste. In a morbid kind of way I should thank Juanita's for making this review easy. The Mexican food is bad (yes its that simple). The burrito shop across the street (Ramiros & Son's) is a mayillion times better, yes that's a number!
I don't understand how such a large restaurant can maintain its doors open. The water down salsa was horrid. If by any chance you would like to recreate the disaster or poison your enemies here is the recipe.
- 90% water
- 5% tomatoe paste
- 5% fresh jalapeno seeds
- 10% I don't give a fck attitude
Stir the watery paste until you like or let sit. Serve.
Juanita does have an interesting option for veggie eaters, the veggie taco. It's a lightly fried tortilla folded in half, stuffed with beans, lettuce, sour cream, cheese and onions. The idea is good but the execution is half assed.
I don't plan to return and I would recommend you stay away.
Items ordered:
Camarones a la Diabla

The people that were popping in this place on a Thursday night, the waitresses in their uniforms, and the other staff who were sporting " Free Dress" made me feel like I was in Rob Zombie film, or one of the 5 films he has blatantly ripped off.
My roommate and I were not THAT hungry so we decided to get the appetizer sampler ( Nachos, jalapeno poppers, quesadilla, and tube things with cheese in them). This took around 20-25 minutes to arrive. What was strange is we were one of the only tables in there.
Why did it take so long?
What are they doing back there?
The sampler is huge! Enough for 4 people no problem. Take that into consideration when adding it to an entree.
They have a 4 for $10 or 6 for $12.50 Corona special. Maybe it's Coronitas, I dunno, I was falling asleep. Maybe they put Mexican sleeping pills in my food?
The waitresses were sweet, for what its worth. The salsa does not compare to the brilliant version served at La Pinata.
They advertise a buy one get 50% off dinner special in ValPak and are open late every night. 1am weekdays, 3 am weekend.
Not horrible, just not exciting or that memorable. -

Well I've spent the last 4.5 years living in South America and the Caribbean and to me Juanitas is typical delicious Mexican fare. La Penca Azul is so ridiculously manufactured for gringos. Last time I ate there and they said they only serve chicken breasts because that's what the gringos like. So I guess it just comes down to what type of food you like.
Try 7 Mars (7 seas) soup, or the enchiladas. Sauce is good. -

I think most of us true Alamedans have fond memories of Juanita's which occasionally(and I mean OCCASIONALLY) bring us back here.It was the High School jaunt where most crowds seemed to meet up.I think the "dine and dash" was created here ?! Not by myself of course but some shady high school kids whose names I won't mention ! The burrito famoso I believe is the draw here ...at least for me it is !

Review from Greg G.
This is another one of those places you feel bad about leaving 2 stars because the service was nice... but the food.. bleh.
If you're a serious Burritophile like me then you'll know exactly what horror I'm talking about- You get a burrito with wet, tasteless chicken that has drenched the tortilla and flooded your plate- all the while tucked under a pound of flavorless rice, floating lettuce, and watery sour cream. Ugh.
Other minuses include they don't serve grilled chicken and they only have one type of hot sauce that you drizzle on with a spoon, not from a bottle, lol.
This place has a full bar and cheesecake dessert, and from what i can tell looked like a very clean restaurant... They also advertise a Sunday Brunch! Just from my past experiences here, you must beware of flavorless food.Listed in: The Ultimate Alameda List

I'm a mass of contradictions. After a 7-mile run, I'll gorge on a hot fudge sundae. I'll spend $80 on a detoxifying facial, only to go out for vodka martinis and cigarettes afterwards. So in true Nancy spirit, how do I treat my body after rejuvenating hypno-acupuncture, but to stuff it with refried beans, fried tortilla chips, and strawberry margaritas.
If I was going to sabotage my diet with disgusting food, couldn't it be good disgusting like Little Star pizza? The chille rellenos were just meh and rubbery. The tortilla chips were pretty good though, as was the salsa, and my friend's combination plate tasty, so I'll bump it up to 3 stars. -

Bummed out. I used to love Juanita's, but we haven't been here in a while (so sorry folks if anyone went here recently based on my former review). We had a late night dinner here (one of the reasons I used to love them), and it was just sad.
I ordered the carne asada, which used to be a platter of perfectly seared beef with a hefty side of crispy, salty, freshly fried french fries. My depressive dish arrived with a paltry four french fries which were clearly Orida's second cousin twice removed - frozen, a little freezer burned even, and lolling coldly on the plate like drift wood after a storm. The beef was tough and dry and might have even been at home in a plastic jar on a 7-Eleven counter.
I know this review is harsh, but Juanita, I used to love you so for your reliable late-night food. You've really let me down and for that, I feel a little betrayed. Sniff.Listed in: Alameda, I'll miss you

Alameda, CA
I don't know why there's this big Juanita's/La Pinata debate in Alameda, they're very different and both are excellent. People who pick sides are totally missing out.
I've been coming here since the early '90s and have had a bad meal exactly once. I was probably in a bad mood or coming down with a cold or something. The rest of the other many, many times I've eaten at Juanitas, it has been very good, unpretentious, homestyle Mexican in a casual, friendly atmosphere. It reminds me a lot of my dearly-missed abuela's cooking [and you know no one cooks like my buela] and is definitely my choice over LP when I want some comfort food or am having a Friday night family dinner or meeting friends for a casual lunch.
The beans and rice are outstanding, which is my #1 criterion for judging Mexican -- if you can't make the staples so good I wouldn't mind having them a la carte, then you need to pack it up and go home. Also irresistible are their delicious chicken mole, pork tamal with green sauce, enchilada verde [I'm a tomatillo girl], and chicken hard taco. Siempre nam-nam!!!
Misc. notes:
- service is generally fast and good
- not taco truck-cheap, but extremely reasonable for such good sit-down food.
- never a wait for a table
- they're super-friendly once you've been in a few times
- plenty of family-/group-sized tables
- full bar
- they serve both Mexican and American breakfast, and the Mexican is available all day
- the noise level's excellent so you can hold conversations and hear yourself think
- open LATE -- at least til last call.
Tip: they have a blended salsa in addition to the default fresh one [which is extremely tasty with a dash of salt though not what a lot of people are used to], but you have to ask for it. I will make my one LP comparison here because salsa is salsa, regardless of caste, and say that LP's is better [mas picante]. But the blended salsa here's pretty darn tasty, too.Listed in: I #!$#$ Love Alameda

This looks like a burrito joint from the street, but it's actually a pretty cute sit-down Mexican restaurant. It has a very friendly feel to it and reminds me of some of the places I visited when I drove down the Baja peninsula.
The menu was extensive, the margarita was fuerte (but from a mix), and they will make green veggie chilaquiles. They were tasty, but the sauce was bland. For vibe and better margaritas/salsa, I still prefer La Pinata, but this is a good "sure-thing" restaurant if you don't want to wait for a table at LP.Listed in: Alameda, Chilaquiles

"Goat!!! Finally!!!"
I started this review, by intending to write an update. I was sure I've written a Juanita's review after we hung out with like 6 people, at the table, next to the front window during the Alameda Zombie Crawl.
That night was awesomely entertaining, the entire night - fully zombified people were passing by and playing to the dining crowd at Juanita's, and probably other restaurants, to every ones amusement. And at a later point some of the participants joined us at our table.
That same night was enhanced by 2 or 3 orders of Juanita's appetizer sampler, and pitchers of margaritas.
The appetizer sampler, which Renee was convinced included Chilequilles, but in reality Chilequilles were no where near that menu item. That absence did not take away at all from the greatness that it provided, seriously there was like 5 dishes for under $12.
That day i figured Juanita's deserves at least a solid 4 stars
Fast forward to this weekend.
On the last visit, i remembered that Mexican restaurants, are one of the few places you can actually order goat in the form of Birria. So I ended up splitting an order with Adam D, and it was awesome. Probably not the healthiest way to prepare meat, quite a bit of visible oil/fat, but considering that goat is a rather healthy alternative i'd say its a totally fair trade off.
According to Alabama Cooperative Extension System:
"goat meat is lower in calories, total fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol than traditional meats. Less saturated fat and less cholesterol mean healthier red meat for the health-conscious consumer. Additionally, goat meat has higher levels of iron (3.2 mg) when compared to a similar serving size of beef (2.9 mg), pork (2.7 mg), lamb (1.4 mg), and chicken (1.5 mg). Comparatively, goat meat also contains higher potassium content with lower sodium levels. Regarding essential amino acid composition, goat meat closely resembles that of beef and lamb.
Goat meat offers more nutritional value, greater health benefits, and is an ideal choice to be considered as "the other red meat.""

This was the worst $8 burrito I've ever had. I ate here in a fit of desperation. Apparently, restaurants close on these "religious holiday" things. WTF? So after seeing that both Viva Mexico and Taqueria Ramiro were closed today, I decided to give Juanita's a try.
Gross.
Pile of burrito ingredients in a foil-lined box, with a few soggy ships drowning in fake guacamole and sour cream on top. No chips on the side, chips on top. Uh, OK. I had the chile verde pork and it was sort of like spam in taco sauce. Did I mention this was gross?
I think the big slap in my face is that I later noticed that La Pinata was open today. Why, God, why, did I choose the wrong taqueria today?
...Oh, what's that you say? Because I am a bad Jewess who chose to eat a burrito on a holy Xian day? Um, OK...well, I hope the burritos in heaven SUCK during Hanukkah! Take THAT, God!!!!Listed in: Shitty Burritos

My friend and I ate here the other night and were both pretty grossed out by our orders. The camarones del diablo tasted like they were sauteed in butter and ketchup, and the pescado ajo was just a deep fried fish dry as a bone, covered in batter and garlic salt. It was filling, yes. But at what cost? AT WHAT COST?
Sorry. Anyway, don't eat here. The margaritas looked okay though. -

The service isn't that great, but I was happy with my order of Chilaquiles! MmMmM tender chunks of chicken, not too cheesy, good seasoning, and generous pieces of tortilla chip mixed in. I always like to crumble a handful more on top for good measure.
I didn't touch my rice or the beans. I would prefer this dish if it came with an option of vegetable soup instead!
I like that they have half orders, which are also pretty generous in size. -

Had a nice time. Good atmosphere. Friendly. Tacos and salsa are good. Burritos are better. Salsa Verde can be better. Salsa ranchera can be better. Parking is OK. Could use the air conditioning for customers' relaxation, as the restaurant is a bit too warm. Over all, fairly clean and nice. They can take this restaurant to the next level with just a bit more effort.

I wanted to like Juanita's, but the minute we walked in the door. the whole place smelled like they just cleaned the bathrooms and very poorly at that!
The margarita was made from mix, and the garlic shrimp I ordered was really dry, and was not even cooked with real garlic, but garlic powder. Yuck. My five year old loves traditional Mexican rice, but what we got was a glob of unseasoned regular white rice. My other half had a burrito that was okay, but nothing memorable.
Our waitress was nice, but a bit slow given that the place was pretty empty. I can now understand the lack of business.
