Never in a million years did I imagine myself sitting in a restaurant sucking on the hugest plate of neckbones I've ever seen. On a recent trip home my Dad "urged" us here for dinner. Thanks Dad! It was awesome! Everything was delicious--the neckbones of course (PLEASE check out the photo), the yams, even the mac and cheese. And I am highly critical of m&c that I didn't make (mostly because it sucks), and you can trust me when I say its (almost) better than mine :)

I was too full for dessert, but the peach tea was incredibly delicious, and the supersweet waiter gave me an extra glass to go. I loved this place--its a great addition to Bakersfield's dining scene. Now if they would just open up one in DC... J--are you listening?

This is some of the best soul food I have ever had, you can tell there is a lot of time and effort that goes into making everything that is served here. The Mac and Cheese is simply divine, make sure to bring aspirin because you will have a mild heart attack after enjoying it. I recommend the Chicken and Waffles for your first dinning experience here. Another plus, it's family owned and ran and they are always incredibly nice and accommodating!

This is a small friendly soul food restaurant. The prices are reasonable. I give their menu a mixed review. The fried chicken was too dry and salty with more skin than meat. MIxed greens and yams were excellent.  Mac and cheese was bit above average in taste. Cornbread was very good. Peach cobbler was excellent.  Ox tails were excellent and the meat was extremely tender.  I would try this restaurant again only to taste other items on their menu. I have dined at several soul restaurants in California and across the US.  I would put J's Place in the middle of the pack.

My first attempt at Fried Chicken and Waffles. While the chicken isn't quite like grandma used to make... it's definitely a spot I will revisit again and again. Cool southern style atmosphere and very good food make this a must try restaurant. If you're not sure you'll like soul food, let this be the place you give your tastebuds a whirl.

Heading home to Los Angeles from Yosemite, we brought out the phone and started looking for THE place in Bakersfield, that is for our tastes.  Read many reviews and J's Place stood out.  Once you are there and eating you understand why.  The service is great and attentive.  The owner is sweet and friendly.  We had the fried chicken and every side dish we could order.  All of it is outstanding.  With the chicken,  we ordered the mac and cheese, greens, black-eyed peas, dirty rice, waffles, corn bread and chili.  The place is simple, very clean and a "must do" in Bakersfield.  We were very happy campers.  Around $8-12 per person.  Amazing. (In the strip mall)

I came here with my sis and her hubby for a late Sunday lunch.  The place was still pretty busy with the post-church crowd.

I ordered the J's Fried Chicken plate (3 pieces of chicken, your choice with 2 sides) for $9.95.  I ordered 2 thighs and 1 leg with my sides being a waffle and dirty rice.

The first thing I noticed was that the chicken thighs I received looked like large chunks of meat were missing.  It was as if you scraped off all the meat and left only the skin and deep fried that.  Disappointing to say the least.  The leg was over-cooked with pieces of it being hard and jerky like.  I also asked for gravy on the side several times before they brought it.  Um, yeah.  Watery and tasteless.

So why did I give it 3 stars and not lower?  Well, the dirty rice all by itself saved this place from scoring lower.  I kid you not, it was probably the best dirty rice I've ever had.  Yummy and spicy.  I also tasted my sis' candied yams which were pretty good.

For dessert, we had the strawberry pie, which wasn't bad.

I just ate at J's for the first time today, and I can say without a doubt that it will not be my last. I usually eat at Phine's on Union to satisfy my Southern/Soul Food cravings.  From this point on I think I will be going to J's.  From the moment I walked through the door I knew it was going to be good.  The place was packed with a post-church crowd either eating at the few tables for dine-in or waiting for their take-out orders.  The crowd and busy atmosphere didn't stop the employees from treating me like I was the only person in the place and my order was the most important thing on their mind. Really nice people.

To top it off, the food was fantastic. I had the catfish with greens and yams.  It also came with mac and cheese and some corn bread.  I ordered my food to go and I honestly ate every last bite.  I even thought about drinking the left over syrup/juice from the yams. My only complaint would be that the catfish was a little bit under-seasoned, but nothing a little hot sauce couldn't solve.  The tarter sauce was also a little ordinary.  I prefer Phine's. If you ever have a craving for some Chicken and Waffles or some good old fashioned Southern cooking J's is the place.

If you like Roscos waffle house you will LOVEEE J's Place , as a matter of fact..J's Place could put Roscos azz right outta buisness....The chicken at J's is moist and seasoned unlike Roscos 'no flavor and dry chicken' the sides like their Mac & cheese , greens , chilli n corn bread are all off the chain and the waffles at J's with lots of butter n syrup will change your dinner into breakfast from now on.They also serve fish , ox tails and tacos which are all yummy.Last but not least their desserts are tasty homemade treats that are great to take home and eat later ( 10 min after I get home) !

I ate J's on sunday afternoon and I absolutely loved it. I don't particularly like or even tried southern food, but it was the best ribs and mac-n-cheese I ever had, I also had the dirty rice and it was sooo good. I also had a bit of my nephews yams and OMG. I was positively hooked. I don't live in Bakersfield, but have family up north, but I will definitly make a drive by EVERY time I pass through. Oh I forgot to mention the dessert. They brought out samples of their Above Average Chocolate Pie. I was in heaven. We had a table of 10 so I got to try at least a taste of everything and it is worth the wait and the drive.

came here on a friends recommendation. we had to wait for at least 40 minutes to be seated, but a large church group filled the place. i had the chicken and waffles with mashed potatoes and gravy. the spuds were okay but i tried my wife's mac and cheese and it was awesome.  also don't pass up on the kool-aid. the fried chicken is a as fresh as it gets and the breasts are boneless skinless. the waffle was tantalizing, maybe it has to do with the whole breakfast for dinner thing.
