I brought the fam here for brunch one recent rainy day, and even though the food was up to its usual yuminess, the service was SO atrociously slow that it was all i could do not to grab the waiter and be like: SERIOUSLY, WHERE IS OUR FOOD!?
And it reminded me of the fact that the service is always kind of slow here, so slow in fact, that at times I have avoided it because I just don't have the extra half hour it's going to take to get in and out of there. This deserves a loss of star, methinks. The food is worth the wait most of the time if you're up for something leisurely, but not a place for a quick bite by any stretch of the imagination.

Pricey! Not sure if emptying out your wallet is worth the food here. I had decent food, but nothing I would oooh and aaaah for. I went here with two other people and we ordered different plates, and again, the only reason I'm giving this place an okay is that the food was good here and there, but not worth the price. I can't recall what my friends ordered, but they apparently enjoyed it more than I did. I just won't go here again, unless my friend absolutely wants to go here for some reason, but other than that, I won't go on my own will.

A good meal place you can feel good about. Except when a drop-in lunch for two costs $75. I wish I could eat like this every day but the entrance fee at a below average atmosphere place gives me pause. $5 for an inced tea and no free refills? Come on.

Josie Grossy. Well, 52 minutes older and $52.00 poorer, I can safely say 'not worth it.'
After waiting nearly an hour for delivery from Josies, I am, unfulfilled. We ordered a burger and fries for almost twenty bucks, a smoothie, a dessert crisp thing and broccoli dumplings.
Mer. And by mer, I mean meh. By air-baked fries, they mean cooked enough to melt the ice from the freezer but not enough to dry them back out. The dumplings seemed like something I would have concocted from a nearly barren fridge in my college days, the burger was mediocre and the smoothie was not memorable.
And Josie, leave the crunchin' to the Cap'n cause I wasn't feeling your dessert. Sorry Chica.
In short, bleh. mer. meh.

Went for brunch on a Sunday, we didn't have to wait more than 5 min thankfully. To start your meal they bring around coffee cake which is delicious. I went with the breakfast burrito, which was really good - but my boyfriend makes a better one than Josie's I must say. It was super pricey - $3 for coffee, $13.75 for my breakfast burrito. It was really tasty though and they had the option of soy cheese which I appreciated.
The one thing that really annoyed me though was the rude bus boys. We asked several times for the coffee cake - but he kept skipping our table. And after the waitress laid our bill on the table - he came around and started taking all of our drinks that we were still drinking. They eventually asked us to move tables because we were apparently taking too long to pay our bill and the host offered us a round of drinks - which we totally took advantage of.

I came here because I'm shallow and it looked cute on the outside. Also I had a serious hankering for brunch and they seemed to offer it. We were also seated right away. And they gave us complimentary cinnamon bread and applesauce (I'm a closet applesauce lover, it just makes me feel like I just turned 6).
But uh, seriously Josie's? You're not kidding? You're seriously going to charge me $14 for an omelet just because the chickens were around to roam free and they apologized to the pig before making it into bacon? No, no that is not acceptable. What else is unacceptable?
$3.25 for a cup of coffee. I don't care if it's bottomless, that's just mean. And basically inhumane, which is interesting because you're all about being friendly to the animals. What about the people that are paying you to be friendly? Don't we mean anything?
The omelet was good but apparently I should have gone down the carby route and gone with the home fries, there was just not enough fruit to keep me happy.
Our waitress was really nice though, and the bathrooms were clean. The place had a good vibe and I would totally consider coming back-- but I'm not paying $20 for an omelete and coffee.
Sorry, I forgot about the "seasonal fuit." Oh, now it's all worth it.

Was ok.. nothing really to bring me back.
My chicken club was good though it kind of lacked structural integrity. I thought things were pretty overpriced.. 15 dollars for a sandwich that doesn't blow my mind just seems a bit steep.

I really liked the complimentary cinnamon raison bread + applesauce. Good alternative to the usual bread + olive oil/butter. In general, Josie's has more healthy, light options than most breakfast/brunch places.
The food was good, but honestly I was expecting more after all the rave reviews. I don't think it's worth the extra $3-5 each dish seems to cost compared to similar restaurants.
Bonus points for extra nice waiter. :)

Dear Ms. Josie,
1. Thank you for giving "virtuous eaters" a place to eat
2. No Josie I do not think its appropriate to charge 15 dollars for penne with a scant amount of tomato sauce
3. Josie...I know you mean well by making the meatballs with turkey instead of beef but girl...couldn't they have been a little more juicier?
4. But I'll give you props J for the amount of tasty edamame you gave me
5. But I'm going to Indian give it back because I had to pay 6 dollars for it
6. But thanks for the free garlicky sweet bread
7. But fuck you for not giving me utensils when I specifically requested them!!!!
This is a love hate relationship...but we'll meet again..oh we shall meet again indeed.
Hugs and kisses

Restaurants in New York are crowded, but I could barely lift my fork without taking out a diner at the next table. They REALLY pack them in. It was also a bit pricey and the food was ok, but not great. I wouldn't go out of my way for this one.
WE MISS YOU SWEET LITTLE JOSIE'S!
My wife (then Fiance) lived near Josie's for several years. We ate there regularly. The food is delicious, interesting and the vibe is casual and cool.
We moved to San Francisco, expecting millions of josie-like restaurants. No such luck. Josie's is unique and special and we miss your mango-chicken salad, great breakfasts, fantastic dinners and more. Please consider opening a spot on the left coast. We are very hungry out here.
We will visit you when we come to NYC, until then best of luck.

Maybe its because I first went to Josie's as a young college student--new to the city--and fell in love with it, but Josie's is like dining out comfort food to me. Josie's UWS is always welcoming, sometimes a bit too loud and unpolished, but the food, drinks and friendly menu and staff always make up for it.
I love bringing big parties here--great for a 5pm Christmas day dinner with 7 people (including a few kids)
(And I am the eat out no earlier than 9:30pm type!)
Josies has FAMILY APPEAL...but a great date spot or casual grown-up dining for a health conscious pair. Its GREAT because so many vegan options, but also meat and fish items. Everything is organic--which I love...
You can't beat Josie's tofu as comfort protein...or the giant plate of veggies you can order---giant broccoli--sweet potatoes---everything---its a lot of veggies, but organic and top quality.
I love the sangria. Nothing fancy, but light and fun. Good wine list as well. Josie's is friendly all around. You can wear jeans and not feel sloppy. However, if you are on a casual date...try to get there a bit later when the noisier families and parties have cleared out...
..oh and when hat bread basket rolls around its like joy on a plate...yeah I know too much bread before the meal is bad....spoils the meal!...but Josie's bread and squash dip is just so freaking yummy I could make a meal out of it! (dont skip the bread...and do eat all your veggies!!!)
ps great place to take yound kids during an earlier dining hour...

One thing you must know about Josie's is its HIT or MISS. Pray for the former. Gosh darn, I've been there sooo many many times that I'm going to go with hits for me (at least majority of the time). Granted you may get a bus boy who doesn't speak english or perhaps doesn't really care what you have to say...the service is well...eeeehh okay. The food is the only reason I frequent the place and because my friend is like a celebrity there, she loves it, loves it, loves it. (That explains all the hits rather than misses, because 9 out of 10 times, I'm usually with her when I go).
I'm reading one or two reviews here--ahem, people it IS organic food, dang it! Stop complaining, its going to be a bit pricey. Katie C says $13.75 for a breakfast burrito is "super pricey"...eeeehhh, thats super pricey? Maybe I've been hanging around too many upper westsiders. But I will say that sometimes I eat and after getting my bill I'm thinking wow- $42 just like that. Thats probably when I'm not with my celebrity friend. ha!
They'll give you mashed sweet-potatoe as a dipping sauce for your corn bread to start with. (Well, thats about as quick as it gets; when you get the rest of your food, depends on when I'm with my celebrity friend or not).
Everyone (my celebrity friend that is) raves about the tuna burger...eeehh, its okay. I usually go for the macamadian crusted chicken breast salad. And for an appetizer the thai chili seared wild shrimp is also good. I really like the lemon ribbon ice cream pie and my celebrity friend loves the three berry ginger pie which we end up getting and sharing--make sure you ask them to warm it. They have a lot of healthy options, so if you're not looking for the healthier alternative then stay clear.
Oh and the Josie's to go salad is soooo delicious. I never use to be a salad person, and I'm still not (but my celebrity friend is), --this is one salad I love. Its vegetarian, but you can add meat/chicken (of course at an additional price). Sadly, its only on the delivery menu and because of everyone (--you guessed it, my celebrity friend), now you can order it and pick it up. But they won't let you eat it there! or by golly order it there. Don't be turned off if they're dismissive when you call--just try the salad.
The waiters may be slightly absent-minded or just have ADD, who knows? I only wish the service was always as good as that pie, in a perfect world, it certainly would be, or they could try harder --thats all I'm saying.
Josie's is... okay. Just okay. It's for UWS veggie-moms who are veggies because their yoga instructor told them to be, not because they care about animals or the environment. Actually, they might care about the environment, but only because Elle Decor listed it as a hot thing to care about for the month of January.
All that aside, Josie's used to be great. They used to have a sweet and chubby and chatty bartender, and healthy juices, and a perfect veggie burger available for dinner. Then, they remodeled, upped their prices, added salt and decorative lamps, and now it's just too expensive and faux-healthy for me. Walk to 24 Carrots on 72nd and West End for real health food.

My all time favorite restaurant in New York. Dairy-free, plus vegetarian options. My favorite morning dish was the eggs benedict, made with out dairy. Don't know how they did it, but it was finger-licking good. I bought the chef/owner's cookbook. There are some wonderful dishes to try out for those of us who are food sensitives.

My BF &I ate here New Year's Eve on our last trip to the Big Apple. I was indulging him (vegetarian) and expecting a taste-lacking experience for myself. Yum...tofu.
But it was fantastic! We had potato/broc dumpling appetizer which had a great tomato-based sauce, but wasn't bland like a lot of health-food sauces. I had chicken teriyaki breast which was seasoned perfectly. Even the veggies on the side were marinated in a tangy sauce. The lemon ice cream pie was delicious.
We made a reservation, which wasn't really necessary that night, although it picked up near 8pm. Service was prompt, energetic, and gave great recommendations. Atmosphere was fancy enough for a special occasion, but still casual for a weekday or first date.
The fruit martinis (I tried apple and mango) left room for improvement, but we didn't go to drink, so I think that Josie's still deserves a 5 star rating. Best organic-based menu I've seen in years!!

The food is "healthy" but not really. Whoever is doing the cooking in the back thinks that salt = flavour.
Some things I've tried, both in the restaurant and through Seamlessweb:
- juices/smoothies: yummy except for any involving ginger
- edamame: oversalted and $6
- calamari: salty and a little too smoky
- tofu stir fry: not bad, but can easily make at home
- roll with brown rice: feels healthy but not very tasty
- unfried brown rice: not bad, good mix of veggies
- beef burger: standard fare
- veggie meatloaf: SALTY
- breakfast burrito: really watery, no flavour

Good food, but extra credit for inventive fare.
+ delicious carrot juice, with lots of froth at the top, just how i like it. (it tasted like it was diluted with orange juice or something, but still good)
+ the multi-grain bread was very good - chock full of seeds and nuts
+ they serve purple and golden beets here - bravo
+ the feta cheese was real feta - not just a brick of salt that sometimes comes with 'mediterranean' inspired dishes
+ at my friend's subtle behest, i tasted the black bean dumplings and they were really (note to self: look up synonym for delicious and good) delicious.
- inconsistent service. sometimes no waiter, sometimes 2.
- i was expecting the beet salad to be, well, predominantly beet. it was mostly arugula (probably the most peppery arugula i've ever had).
verdict: i would definitely go back. next time for the dumplings.

Am I a creature of habit? Judging from the number of times I have had dinners at Josie's on my birthdays, it is either that, or I absolutely LOVE Josie's. What's not to love about it? Except of course the seating arrangement being hit-or-miss.
o The juice bar and smoothies--there isn't a healthier way to begin the year
o The pan-seared spicy organic black bean dumplings--to die for, or kill for
o The roasted butternut squash soup--thick consistency, coupled with pumpkin seeds
o The unique feel of the UWS--memories of attending school a few blocks North
o Proximity to Fairway Market--where you can wrestle with fellow NYers for groceries
Josie's is the "old faithful" that I have come to love and frequent, especially on birthdays. But maybe not this year. Would that mean I might have a different year from the previous ones? Time will tell. But that might be quite a welcome prospect on some fronts!

Josie's calls themselves "Friendly fun and fabulous for you" and "a beacon... of healthful and wholesome ingredients." That's fine and dandy but when you're charging $14 for fruit and three chocolate chip pancakes with around twelve chocolate chips plus $3.25 for a tiny cup of thin, weak coffee (granted it's bottomless), I start to question the "friendly" and the "wholesome."
While strolling around the UWS on a gray Saturday with my Mom and sister, we attempted to have brunch at Alice's Tea Cup, a good place to take the special ladies in your life. Unfortunately the 30-minute wait there sent us towards Amsterdam Avenue where we came upon Josie's, a place my Mom and sister previously enjoyed.
After milling through the brunch menu, I limited my decisions down to one of two:
- The Char-Grilled Brandt Natural Beef Burger for an exorbitant $15.75
And...
- The Traditional Organic Pancakes ($11.75 plain) for $13.75 with chocolate chips and fresh strawberries.
I inquired as to whether the burger was flame-broiled or on a griddled and the waitress skeptically answered "flat griddle", enough for me to say no thanks. NYC Food Guy likes his burgers flame-broiled. This turned out to be smart move because I saw the burger on another table and it looked too tightly packed (a burger should be loosely packed letting the juices form) and was on a bun that was half it's size.
So I went with the pancakes served with organic maple syrup and non-dairy strawberry "butter".
These pancakes were airy and fairly light, not cakey or rubbery like some diner pancakes, but they didn't impress. Why?
1) Organic maple syrup is too thin to sufficiently coat the pancakes, I could have asked for more but I wasn't looking for a sugar overdose.
2) There weren't enough chocolate chips for me. I spotted about 5 or 6 chips in each of the three pancakes. My preference is to get at that many chocolate chips in each bite.
3) The quotes on that strawberry "butter" are the most loosely used quotes I've ever seen. I don't even know how to describe what this pink goop tasted like; maybe a mix of imitation-dairy sour cream with a hint of some poor attempt at strawberry flavor. Just nasty. I ordered some real butter, smeared it all over and chowed down.
It was comforting adding a little unhealthy-ness to the meal. Want some real strawberry butter on the UWS? Head to Good Enough to Eat or Popover Cafe.
Josie's was packed so they're obviously cashing in on the organic food craze. The place is nice inside, bright and pastel colored. Guys, this would be a great place to take a health conscious girl for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. But in the end it's way overpriced for the kind of food I'd usually pay this kind of money for. $16 for a cheeseburger and baked Belgian frites? $14 for three little pancakes, some weird pink stuff, and thin maple syrup? Forget that. If the prices were lower it would be another story but Josie's, "fablulous for you", really seems to be fabulous for them.

I have no idea what people see in this place. It isn't particularly healthy, and it definitely isn't good. I got the turkey meatloaf, loose iced tea (cranberry), and of course, the complimentary bread. Woe is me, but everything was genuinely lackluster and unimpressive. There are many other specialty organic "natural" places that taste a lot more fresh than this and aren't as expensive. It's a no.
I landed in NYC late after a long plane ride that involved sitting on the runway in LA and in NY, lost baggage, and a cab ride through some major torential downpours. After arriving at the hotel, my travelling companion and I needed some food so off we went to Josie's, which was just around the corner.
We were starving after this fiasco of a trip that was many hours more than it should have been. So, we need some food ASAP and apparently Josie's has great bread. Perfect. Only... they're out of bread. They did bring us the squash puree that they serve with the bread but no bread. So... I think we were supposed to eat the spread with a fork, which is precisely what I did b/c I was starving. I know this seems incredibly uncouth but I'm sorry - if you bring it and I am starving, I will eat it. And seriously, why bring the spread if you're out of bread anyway? Lame.
But, the menu, while incredibly expensive for what it is, looked fine. It was late so we didn't want to order huge entrees so we were looking at the soups/salads/appetizers. I wanted the broccoli dumplings. They were out. They were out of the other dumplings, too. I ended up getting butternut squash soup and a salad with miso dressing. The dressing was great but ultimately, it was just greens with dressing. The soup was fine but too sweet for my tastes. I prefer Nicole P.'s butternut squash soup to be totally honest. So, I wasn't crazy about it but I would try it again for the regular entrees, which looked good. If they have them, that is.

I had the grilled calamari appetizer which was very good. For dinner, I had the angel hair pasta with turkey meatballs, which I also thought was very good. I was by myself and ate at the bar, which had hardly anybody sitting at it at all.
Although both things I ate were good, I felt both were missing some flavor, as if one small touch would have made them excellent.
Josie's has a great range of healthy food. If you are looking for bistro fare, they've got lots of choices (the usual salmon, the really tasty macadamia-crusted chicken salad.) My favorites on their menu, however, are the Asian-inspired dishes. Maybe it's because Asian cooking is easy to do light and flavorful, but my favorite dish on the menu is the "shrimp un-fried rice," which combines the best things of fried rice with healthy elements like brown (instead of white) rice, grilled (instead of fried) shrimp and lots of tasty vegetables (instead of the usual stray frozen pea.) Although the service and delivery are often slow, I plan for it and make sure I'm there with friends or at home with something to do in the apartment while waiting for delivery. (Just be careful - their delivery is a different menu AND a different phone number.)

Been there twice, am not a vegetarian but restrict myself from eating "flesh" most of the time. Nice little place to have brunch on a Saturday or Sunday morning when you feel like being lazy out of bed and don't want to cook.
Not 5 stars?... well despite the freshness, taste, organic products and yadee yadee yada... I don't like the decor or the sittings.. make me feel like I'm in a rush at all time or I have to pull my chair for other people to get by. O je dis simplement non!!!

But Thank you Josie for the healthy food and service. I will definitely recommend.

This place gets my vote for using fresh, organic stuff and for considering various people's eating habits...such as those pesky veggie-only eaters. lol Kidding veggie-eaters...kidding.
All of their dishes are LARGE so go with an empty stomach or plan on taking some home for a second meal the next day. Also good...split a dish with a companion.
We had a party of 8 or so and got right in with little issue...the place is loud and bustling with after-work peeps so be prepared to shout a tad in order to hear your dining buddies.
I highly recommend the salmon and the seared Yellowtail...both were quite awesome. And my man, well, he rather enjoyed (judging by the way he wolfed it down!) his crab cake appetizer.
All of their stuff is fresh and they use only the finest ingredients...lots of dishes for the food-conscious folk.

If I really cared about healthy, organic eating, I'd eat here more. But I'm more concerned with taste and value and Josie's is good but not great in that respect.
Love the fresh, assorted bread and roasted red pepper spread - better than your normal starter. The macadamia-encrusted chicken salad is great and well-portioned but it better be at $15. The natural/organic cheddar burger I had was average - the smashed potatoes it came with were very good and the veggies were ok. But at $13.75, I'd recommend going somewhere that uses whatever inorganic meat makes for a better, cheaper burger.
The place is nice but it's more for having a solid meal than dinner & drinks. Guess that makes sense as why make a big show of eating organic/healthy food and then wash it down with booze? (a glass or two of wine is good for the heart, no?)
So I'd save this place for times when you're craving healthy food, you're trying to pose as a healthy person, or you're bringing someone who's into healthy food and/or vegetarian (the veggie options aren't as plentiful as you'd think but it's better than most).
But I'd choose nearby Citrus over Josie's which is owned by the same company for a more fun night out...

Josie's is a great place to go for health conscious eaters or simply, if you're feeling stuffed from lunch or tea. They have a good selection of both vegetarian and meat entrees so if your gf/bf is vegetarian/vegan and you are not, dinner can still work out happily. Josie's isn't the best place in NY per se, but if you're in the neighborhood or craving a casual dinner, definitely stop by.

Josie's is a rare restaurant that offers fresh, creative cuisine, but more importantly also considers the potential vegan/vegetarian client who wants more than just a vegetable dish.
I'm not a vegetarian, but I dropped by Josie's for their Sunday brunch and was delighted to find among the many scrumptious breakfast offerings of pancakes and egg dishes a "tofu scramble" with vegetarian sausage and fruit salad. I decided to take a shot and try it since I love vegan cuisine. My plate arrived and the tofu actually looked like scrambled eggs with mushrooms, onions and bell peppers - they must have added spices to turn the tofu a yellow color, making it look a little more appealing than just tofu. And it was delicious! Even the vegan sausage, which I had never tried before, was good. The family sitting next to me asked what I had ordered since it looked so good (and I was clearly enjoying myself).
The juice and smoothie bar is also really good, and you can easily stop in for a refreshing break in your day.
Me and my lady-friend were in a bit of a rush when we went to Josie's so I don't think we really had a chance to soak up the entire experience of eating there. However, the food was pretty darned tasty and the waiter was totally friendly and appreciated our need to get out of there quickly.
I will say that the menu was a lot less vegetarian than I expected it to be. Perhaps it was the listing category here on Yelp, but I was under the impression that this place was primarily a vegetarian place. They only have three or four strictly vegetarian options on their rather extensive menu. Everything else was either chicken or fish, though.
However, the food that we had was rockin'. I had the veggie meatload which tasted like ... (wait for it)... meatloaf! And it was served with some really delicious greens that made for a delicious meal. My girl had the veggie plate which was ginormous and she couldn't finish it... But she definitely won the game of "who got the tastier dish."
I had their Pinot by the glass and it was good... Seemed like it might get crowded but good for small parties. But, like, I say, I was in-and-outta there pretty quick.

This is a good place for brunch and especially if you're looking for something healthy. But went here for dinner once and had a poor experience. But, with that said, it was pretty late.
yay josie's! i first learned about this place when my old roommate was a manager here back in the day, fresh off of waitressing at sister-restaurant josephina's where she met her future husband. (i was in their wedding this summer. it was great). sometimes, knowing people who work at a particular restaurant could deter your from actually dining there, but this place is not the case. josie's rocks.
i'm not sure what about this place brings out the 90s hip hop slang out of me...oh wait, that's just me when i'm super-excited about something:
spelt pancakes? bbbangin. tuna burger? ssslammin. angel hair with turkey meatballs? the bizomb. apple, punkin, or berry pies with spelt crusts? word to your mutha.
u do need to make sure ur budget can take a little bit of a hit in order to partake in Louis Lanza's special menu, but i assure you, it's worth it.
the only minimal and i mean, miniscule drawbacks: they open at noon and so you can only get the spelt pancakes on the weekends when they offer their brunch menu (breakfast everyday, please!), and my friend got a class of organic wine she thought was possibly from a bad bottle of wine, but we concluded that it was just organic-tannic.
great place to dine on the UWS for ppl with food restrictions. usually courteous service (although sometimes the hostesses can be really dumb. trust me on this one, i've heard the insider stories). great juice of the day. pleasant atmosphere.
fyi, the company that owns all the josie's around town, also owns citrus one block away, the aforementioned josephina's, and all better burgers.

Boo for dinner. Hadn't been here for a few years and went back when in town this weekend. You don't have to sacrifice flavor for health!
1. bread was cold and not super fresh. corn bread was bitter. foccacia was dry.
2. veggie loaf was flavorless and lacked interesting side (see #3)
3. bok choi is one of the cheapest vegetables out there - sauteeing in oil is not going to cut it flavor- or value-wise when charging $16 for an entree.
(4. malbec was so tannic I felt like I had just had my tongue shaved, but perhaps not josie's fault)
On the plus side, cherry beer was awesome and the black bean empenadas were outstanding. Mashed pumpkin that was given to spread on bread was OK, but what's so exciting about mushy pumpkin without any seasoning?
