This review is long overdue. About three years overdo, in fact. My bottom wisdom teeth had been coming through slowly for years, and have caused me some problems, but it's just one of those things you never get around too.
Seriously, who wants to deal with oral surgery? Last time I did, I wasn't completely out, and remember the chisel and hammer in my mouth. Seriously.
Then there's the gaping holes in your mouth that have to heal, so your diet is limited and in the age of webmd and wiki, I learned what dry rot is. Awesome.
In any case, I finally went in. X-Ray. Yup, they need to go. Scheduled. IV'd. OUT. DONE.
Greatest experience. I actually had my wisdom teeth surgery done 8 hours ago...
When I first went in, we discussed my special case (malignant hyperthermia) and discussed all types of anesthesia i could take, then made my official appointment.
they knocked me out, and the next thing i knew they were asking me if i wanted to keep my teeth or not WHICH WERE TEH AWESOME.
quite the pricey surgeon, but an awesome job.
Was referred to Dr. Kim by Dr. Jennifer Wu. Had 3 teeth extracted...2 impacted - 1 even a wisdom. I was in and out...no problems before or after. They even worked with me on payments for what was not covered by my insurance. Love the people there...their attitudes, their energy...everything about the office, the Dr. and his employees are the best!
I was referred to Dr. Kim by Dr. Jennifer Wu after it was determined that I had a blocked saliva gland on the inside of my lips. At first I thought that this was just a zit or one of those case where you accidentally bite your lip and then it swells up. I was hoping it was go away but after I realized it wouldn't, I went to get it checked out with Dr. Jennifer Wu. She referred me to Dr. Kim, who is an Oral Surgeon. He diagnosed it immediately, and pointed out in detail what needed to be done and what I should expect.
This wasn't really something that I was looking forward to do, but Dr. Kim was extremely personably and made it a comfortable experience. His staff is upbeat and entertaining, as they all carry a good sense of humor and make an effort to make the patient feel at ease. By the way, the procedure went very well and was done sooner than I knew it!
I would definitely recommend Dr. Kim to anyone looking for a expertly skilled and personably Oral Surgeon. 5-stars!!!
Located in an office building off of the 85 and El Camino, I was surprised to find the office as pleasant as it was. The decor is relaxing and the equipment all state of the art. All of the staff members make sure to go out of their way to say hello to patients and are genuine with service. I was given a warm cup of tea while waiting and read informative pamphlets to ease my mind about my upcoming first surgery ever.
The digital x-ray was pretty nifty after the machine did a 360 around my head. The scans were immediately uploaded to the computer for my consultation. Apparently I have an impacted wisdom tooth on my upper left, so I'll have to reschedule some time to go in for surgery--yikes. Dr. Kim was pleasant and explained everything thoroughly. I feel that he will be the perfect oral surgeon for my procedure which will only last 15 minutes!
I was also a bit worried about the costs of everything, but was relieved to find out that Dr. Kim is in-network with our dental ppo. My out of pocket costs will only be ~$120 for the whole procedure! Will post more following surgery, but I don't expect anything short of it being a smooth procedure, scared as I may be.
Absolutely wonderful! Attentive and caring staff, from the greeter at the door to Dr. Kim himself. The office runs like clockwork, and I can not recommend them high enough.
I was referred to Dr. Kim by my wonderful dentist Dr. Karen Ho (if she's not your dentist yet, she should be) to get two of my wisdom teeth out. During my initial consultation, I was struck by how personable his entire staff was and how caring of a doctor he was. Today (this morning, literally 8 hours ago), I had my surgery! Everything went really well. I was impressed by the staff, loved how smoothly everything went (including billing), and how they took the time to call in my prescription for me, explain care to me and my driver, and take me out to my car in a wheelchair.
I was definitely terrified before my surgery, I had never been under general anesthesia before, and Dr. Kim and his staff were so wonderful and calming that I knew I was in great hands. Now I'm feeling pretty good (probably thanks to the pain meds I was given) and very glad that I had my wisdom teeth done by Dr. Kim!
Update: I ended up getting the dreaded dry-socket after my surgery, and when I called Dr. Kim on a Sunday in tears, he was very supportive and I was in his office the next day getting treated. When I went out of town, they even gave me the materials I needed to take care of myself. Now, I'm all healed up!
Who knew getting all four wisdom teeth extracted could be a painless procedure? And I don't mean relatively painless, I mean painless - period.
I was referred to Dr. Kim by my regular dentist since it was clear the teeth needed to come out. I went in for the standard evaluation visit, and got to meet Dr. Kim and his totally-awesome-super-fantastic-groovy staff. Everyone was helpful and friendly, and it felt like I'd been a patient of theirs for 20 years. You will take a liking to Dr. Kim immediately; he's one of those doctors that you wish could mentor OTHER doctors on how to communicate with patients effectively. He will ask you about yourself and not in that obligatory way in which you feel like the dr. is just asking to make bs small talk. You genuinely feel like he cares...and you know what? He probably does.
Had my procedure done last Thursday. We were talking about tae kwon do when I fell asleep. I woke up a couple minutes later (seemingly) and was worried that I wasn't given enough meds and that I woke up too early. Silly girl! I then realized I was now sitting up and Dr. Kim was telling someone on his staff that I was biting my lip. His voice was blurred since I was still groggy, but I thought he said "You did great!" What? How did you pull out my teeth in 2 minutes??? Oh.........
It's been 4 days, and I can honestly say I didn't feel one iota of pain during/after my visit. Dr. Kim called me himself, the evening of my extraction to check in. Just a note to Dr. Kim: Your patients really appreciate you reaching out! But, I'm sure you already knew that :)
His staff really makes the experience pleasant and unforgettable. Office and rooms are clean and well maintained, as you would expect.
He's so good, I kinda wish I had more teeth for him to pull. Okay, that last part about my teeth was a lie, but he is That. Damn. Good.
Five painless stars!
***Update 3.20.08****
I just left the office for my follow up. I mean I literally just left and am sitting in the parking lot typing this before I head back to the office. My regular dentist is so fantastic, yet I can't help but feel a bit sad that I won't be coming to see Dr. Kim anymore. At least not until my daughter needs oral surgery :)
I had all four wisdom teeth removed last year, and had a comfortable, easy experience thanks to Dr. Kim and staff.
He will immediately gain your trust. He is one of those rare doctors that takes the time to listen to your questions, and never cuts you off.
The facilities are modern and clean, and they go as far as giving you a flat screen featuring nature footage to relax you before the surgery.
When I woke up, I felt like I had been in a boxing match, and was numb as hell. I immediately drank liquids when I got home, and slowly regained feeling in my mouth. After napping the rest of the day, I felt great. The next couple days, my discomfort was minimal.
The hardest part of the whole thing was dealing with the extremely bitter taste that sticks in your mouth for the first day due to the numbing stuff they use. Just keep pounding juice and soup, and that nasty taste will eventually disappear.
I highly recommend Dr. Kim for any dental surgery!
I went in for an oral evaluation to see if I needed to get my wisdom teeth pulled out or not, as a follow up from my dentist Karen Ho. Since I am pregnant, he did not do any x-rays on me. All he did was look at my teeth and we talked about my options. I can't believe I had to pay $110.00 for someone to just look at my teeth for 10 minutes. They billed my insurance company as it being a regular ol' evaluation instead of a specialist consultation. Which is complete bullshit! If my regular dentist can't help me and she sends me to someone who can, isn't that a SPECIALIST!??!?!?! complete bullshit. Just make sure you check with your insurance company before going here.
UPDATE: My husband had to call, and they went ahead and billed me through my insurance...took long enough! They were trying to send me to collections.
I had all four of my wisdom teeth pulled in southern California while on leave from work, but had problems when I got back to northern California and had to find an oral surgeon in the area. My on-site dentist at work recommended Dr. Kim. He was great. His office staff was the most genuinely cheerful bunch of people I've ever met. He was extremely personable -- he put me right at ease. He didn't cause me any pain -- I was a little anxious about the procedure (he did a debridement: removal of dead tissue in my infected tooth socket), but it went smoothly and there was *no* pain afterwards! I was amazed.
He also charged me less than he could have -- charging me the cheaper of two similar procedures saying that if I'd gotten my wisdom teeth pulled by him (or if I'd gone back to the oral surgeon who did pull my teeth), this wouldn't have cost me anything.
The other notable thing about my visit was that the office was packed with people (I guess it was an extremely busy day), and there was a woman there who'd brought her mother into the office to meet Dr. Kim and his staff. You have to be pretty happy with your oral surgeon to want to bring your mother in to meet him :)
I've been back to the office a couple of times since then, and each time it's been a really great experience. I can't recommend him highly enough.
"I'm lost (ok - I get lost in a shoe box), I'm scared, and I'm late. Let's just forget it and reschedule the appointment. Forget it!" I screamed into the phone. A calm voice responded, "it's ok, let's just get you here. It doesn't matter what time you show, we're happy to see you when you do." After staying on the phone with me for what seemed eternity I arrived at the office. It was one of the warmest welcomes I have ever received. The staff made it feel like I was the only patient Dr. Kim had. That day I met with Dr. Kim and scheduled my exxtraction date for the next day.
The day of the extraction I was greeted the same way. They brought me in, made me laugh, and shared stories of the Philipines until I fell asleep. When I awoke, I was in a bit of pain and they explained everything to my ride and even walked me all the way to the car, putting me in the car and fastening my seat belt. This was all done by 1:00pm. By 6:00 that day I was completely awake and laughing.
Whoever tells you getting your wisdom teeth pulled is exrutiating was not a patients of Dr. Kim's.
I had my 4 wisdom teeth and rotten root-canaled molar extracted from him (referred to by Dr. Hwang D.D.S.) and now I'm getting an implant to replace that molar. I'm very happy to say that Dr. Kim is THE happiest and most thankful doctor I've encountered. He's so proud of his work and his staff...his rooms are named "Compassion" and "Kindness". "Yes, send her to the Compassion room and I be there in a sec." AWW!!! When I worked at Banana Republic, I ran into him there, and his family is the happiest family ever. He was doing this husband/father duties of shopping aimlessly while his wife tries the whole store on. I thought "Wow, how do you raise such people?" *sigh* Anyways, this surgeon is great and his staff is awesome. They're so optimistic, thorough and positive. They have books in their waiting room donated from previous guests and there are books of "Random Acts of Kindness", "How to make people smile", those kinds of books. He's highly recommended by me :)
Edit: 06-10-2008: His surgery room is called "EXCELLENCE". Now, that is just great. Excellent care with excellent surgeons and nurses, in an excellent reclining chair, and an excellent outcome :) I'm such a huge fan!
Dr Kim is excellent. I had a growth in my mouth and my Dentist referred me to Dr. Kim. He said the best thing to do is to remove it and reduce the risk of cancer. I had it done and it was quick, not painful and Dr. Kim did a great job. After the surgery he gave me an emergency phone number if I had a problem. Over the weekend the stitches got loose. I called him on a Sunday, he answered the phone right away and everything turned out great. I would recommend him without a question.
Anyone who has ever been terrified of dentists can rest assured that Dr Kim is terrific at his job. I had to have my wisdom teeth out and I am the sort of person who is just absolutely petrified at the mere thought of going to a dentist. Thank God for Dr Kim. He put me under to complete the procedure. However, Dr Kim is not a dentist but a dental surgeon so he doesn't do the 'menial' dentist tasks unfortunately -- otherwise I'd be going to him for everything.
I just had an implant done for a molar that had been missing for a couple of years. i have been putting this off fearing the hassle of having it done. Dr. Kim and his entire staff were awesome! They explain everything they do step by step and the confidence he and his staff exude is great to be around. I highly recommend Dr. Joseph Kim
I FINALLY had my two bottom wisdom teeth pulled out last week after ummm... a few years of refusing to do so. I remember my sister and my husband getting theirs done and I dreaded the aftermath of pain and discomfort for the following days. I went this office on recommendation from my regular dentist and I just have to say that they are GREAT!! The staff is really helpful and friendly and make sure that you understand what they're doing and what's going on. I went in for my procedure at 10AM and woke up an hour later dazed with my mouth full of gauze. I went home, ate and took my medicine as advised and took about a 4 hour nap. I woke up with a little numbness that wore off in another couple hours. By dinner time, I was feeling perfectly fine. No agonizing pain, no swollen chipmunk cheeks... just a little tenderness when I opened my mouth. I honestly think I've had more painful treatments at the spa!! I highly recommend this office.
