16 reviews for Jose Muldoon's
Having just moved to the Springs, I don't know where all the "institutions" are quite yet, or which places are the "must go-to" in town. Some co-workers suggested we meet for drinks and apps at Jose Muldoon's. Eager to get the lay of the land, I agreed and met them there on a weekday afternoon.
Good food, good beer and good margaritas are standard here. I'll be back for sure. Don't remember exactly what we ate - I mentioned the margaritas were good - but everything was tasty. There was a fair bit of sharing going on. They have several high gravity beers as well, and I'm a fan of those. :)
All in all, it wasn't an amazing experience but it was better than average and I will return.
love Jose's -there is a reason this place is always packed on a Friday night year after after year- great food, great atmosphere, great times to be had by all.
Ijole!! ni como ayudarle...decoration: good, trying to be like a familar like restaurant but seems very sports bar...The food: the food? hmmm is JOSE MULDOON'S really a restaurant or chef's school for first grade students?
food: so poor, not really flavor at all, the red paint they put on top of the enchiladas was tasteless, (I know is american-mex style but I tried something better), the rice was like made just 5 min before, so still crispy and had an horrible fake red color.. and well etc etc.. no time to talk about bad moments, I wont eat @JOSE MULDOON'S again.
Admittedly, I live in Washington, so you should ignore absolutely anything I say about Mexican food, and consider jeering and throwing soggy tamales, but Jose Muldoon seems more Tex-Mex, or New Mexican than south-of-the-border Mexican. I suppose I shouldn't have been surprised, since Jose Muldoon was apparently an entirely fictional bandit. Heh.
While I would love to go pelt some random Texans with cowpies in revenge for their inexplicable desire to put cumin in everything ever (This is not your chili cooking contest. Put down the cumin!) and generally spurning horchata, you gotta admit American-influenced Mexican food has some high points, like melty cheesy artery-hardening goodness, green chile sauce and fried ice cream, all of which are executed decently at Jose Muldoon's. So once you accept that Tex Mex is what you're getting, it's pretty good Tex Mex. The topolobampo was excellent (a flour tortilla wrapped around big chunks of avocado and chicken or vegetables, doused christmas style with red and green chili sauces... whoa), and I wish I knew of anywhere else that would make it. And the place was rather packed on a Tuesday night, which says something... though it probably says more about the booze than the food. :)
As long as you aren't hung up on taqueria-style authenticity, you should be able to find something here you like. Or enough booze to forget whether you liked it or not.
if you like so-so american-mexican food this is the place for you. The only reason to go is the margaritas, and after a couple who cares what the food tastes like. watch the hot plates cause they stick those bad boys in the oven to heat it all up cause your dish was made in the A.M. and they are just heating them up for you. no thanks, Its been around for along time so some people must like it or location, location, location you decide.
They do have a nice back patio and some good live music. its an OK hang out but nothing really jumps out at me to come back. I will leave it to the tourists.
Just eat the chips...
Medicore tex-mex.
Best Mexican in the Springs!
They have an awesome back patio that is perfect for having dinner in the summer. The food is all great, and the margaritas are fantastic.
Almost a Colorado Springs institution. You have to go if you're in the downtown area.
Wow, I was also impressed by the remodel! The vibe has been totally upgraded.
Come here in the summer for the back patio. It's sheltered, so it's not windy, and there is plenty of shade if you don't want total sun.
All in all, a classic, good downtown location for your standard Meixcan food.
As has been mentioned by others, Jose's is a downtown institution. The remodel has made it feel at least fancier than the dingy place that I grew up visiting, but it is still a good casual restaurant. Tasty margaritas, pretty decent food, although there are definitely better, more authentic Mexican restaurants out there. If you're not sure exactly what to get, I highly recommend the chicken topolabampo.
I recommend going on Sunday morning for the Margarita brunch...get your favorite breakfast items (from traditional American style breakfast to huevos rancheros to a fun take on eggs benedict) served with a complimentary margarita or mimosa.
Jose's is cool. It doesn't really jump out at me but I'll keep coming back. Even if I'm still feeling the shrimp enchiladas from last night (and not in an awesome way). Just like how writing a review is prob unnecessary because people are going to come here anyway because of the downtown location.
Have only been here for drinks and free chips but I like it. Last time I was here, they had a special mojito menu
Me: ooooh, mojitos!
Drewbert: which one do you think you'll get?
Me: dunno, most sound really good...except for this one, cucumber mojito. what kind of freak would order that?
Drewbert: yuck, that sounds awful!
Hubster: excuse me waitress, can I have a cucumber mojito?
Jose Muldoon's is now new and improved: they have done some serious remodeling of not only their establishment, but also their menu.
While the plates are somewhat on the upper-end (9-11$), the margarita selection is excellent, and the house margarita is solid. The vegetarian options are somewhat limited, but they are there.
The seating is adequate, and the free chips and salsa to start are damn good actually. In fact, this is the main reason I am giving this somewhat expensive place its 4 stars: even the free salsa is excellent.
I am much more impressed with Jose Muldoon's after the renovations, so if you thought this place was mediocre, well you should try it now.
A local staple for over 20 years, Jose Muldoon's sits right downtown in Colorado Springs on Tejon across from the square. They feature typical mexican fare, with a decent margarita list. Shoot for perenial favorites such as the chimichanga, the enchiladas, or the decent chile rellenos. And, you can never go wrong with the Azetca Queso to start.
Overall, Jose Muldoon's is a safe bet for decent mexican, but don't expect it to be the best you can find in southern Colorado.
As a Tex-Mex enthusiast, I find little apart from the margarita list to get excited about at Jose Muldoon's. The margaritas are truly impressive, but the food is overpriced and underwhelming. For the value, I prefer my neighborhood La Casita, but Muldoon's is OK if you're entertaining margarita-loving folks from out of town. Or--if you're planning a night of bar hopping downtown and need a place to start that serves stomach-filling food.
This place is always jumpin' with people or music. It has a great feel to the restaurant and is fun to be with friends and family. Their margarita's are really good, I highly recommend getting one when you go! The service is always greeat , the staff there are so friendly. Thier food isn't the best, but it's pretty decent at a pretty good price.
I like the remodel. the bar area is much better and they do have a sweet set-up for games with brand new High def TVs. Food is solid in not spectacular. Margaritas are excellent. Decent beer selection. They also improved the outdoor area...the indoor bar continues through to the outside via a sliding door.
