5 Stars for the pie and the service. You better get there early if you want a decent pie selection, they sell out fast.
Food is a great value but really underseasoned. Reminds me of my mom's cooking - and she's not such a good cook. But I still love this place. -

This place is so good! I'm actually not a big fan of breakfast foods but the food here is making me reconsider.
My friend and I came on a weekday morning and we still had to wait about an hour. No reservations so be conscious of that. I ordered the ham and cheese omelette with hashbrowns and my friend ordered the banana nut pancakes. Portions were HUGE and we were so full. Next time, we'll probably just share one entree. The blueberry muffins are good so I would definitely recommend that.
Servers are very nice and the restaurant is very cozy. I will definitely return! -

Ok so I like this place. They have unique food (ie. Lemon blue berry pancakes). They're muffins are the business!! A big plus is they have a bar not alcohol bar but where you can sit and eat. This is a big plus reason being when you go somewhere that just has tables you feel awkward eating by yourself but a bar makes it like diner style talk to the servers if you want to and they are single seats. Also service was pretty quick at our table.
What I didn't like was street parking I'm not a fan but I can see that it might be better on a weekday instead of a Saturday when I went. Another thing is the bar takes a lot of space so you have limited outside seating and a bench seat along the wall that seats about 8. Which is fine during low traffic time but weekends are no bueno. Lol but that's it.
The place would've gotten 5 stars but there's really nothing visually stunning about it like a grill at the bar where a guy makes your omelettes with shredded cheese diced tomatoes and bacon, sausage, ham, and whatever else you like. It's just missing something exotic. I'm definitely going back. -

Jongewaard .....Hidden gem in a pile of foreclosure on Atlantic blvd
If martha stewart and barefoot contessa could have child this would be it.
The Aromatic of Bake Cakes and Pies would lure you in like Hansel and Gretel,
And the evil witch is brewing your favorite banana crème pie in her cauldron... .bawhahaah!
If you want the feel of the Hampton's and the comfort of your mom's cooking
Then go home crying to your mommies or stop by here and support local business
The food is delicious, the place is super cute inside and its family owned so the wait staff is pretty good. Blueberry pancakes and Chicken Pot Pie are to die for. the dining experience is really unique. I mean the place is small but really comfortable and clean! The staff have A+ service, always attentive and informative about the specials and combos :) The selection of food was really great, they had so many varieties for not only the desserts, but the salads, soups, sandwiches and burgers.
Top Deserts : Lust Cake and Banana Crème Pie and Red Velvet Cake
If the hundreds of positive reviews, including this one hasn't convinced you Bake N Broil is a place to at least try, I'll leave you with this: Every time I've eaten here I've been others who currently live further from J's BNB than I, and I'm 20+ miles away. It's that kind of good. -

Delicious! But their pies sell out, so you should call first and reserve one - particularly the chicken pot pies, which are super tasty.
They also don't have all the fruit pies every night, so if you want, say the rhubarb, also call and check its on the menu first.
Good comfort food :) -

CAN WE GET SOME COLOR UP IN THIS JOINT?!?!?!
Not to sound like a racist (because I'm not . . . ) but I can't walk in this place and notice that all the servers in here are young white kids. Including the bus boys!!! Nah... just kidding... the bus boys are hispanic.
I had a hankering for pancakes. Looked up some reviews on yelp and Bake N Broil popped up. Been hearing about this place for awhile and I decided to try it out. Heard all the jazz about raspberry lemon blueberry pancakes. The boyfriend and I strolled in around dinner and this place was packed. We waited 20 minutes and finally got seated. I ordered the blue berries pancakes and he ordered a steak sandwich. I saw them putting on red velvet cupcakes on display as we were waiting and knew I had to get one before I left.
Now here is where my complaints begin:
Someone should have told me that this lemon blueberry pancakes was not listed on the menu and was on the secret menu item. WTH?! Where are we?! In N Out. I should've just got my pancakes animal style and called it a day. Realizing my mistakes, I contacted my server (who reminds me of one of the boys on the Brady Bunch) and asked him about the lemon blueberry pancakes. He kind of just tilted his head to the side and gave me that "Oh right... yeah....." sort of face. Said he would bring out the raspberry sauce, powder sugar, and a lemon wedge. A FRIGGIN LEMON WEDGE?! OKAY BUDDY.
5 minutes passed and I still didnt get my darn lemon wedge. I hailed my server down again and as he passed he gave me that face of, "oh... yeahh... right...." then he came by and just dropped off a cup of raspberry syrup. Where's my powder sugar? where's my damn lemon wedge?!? Not like I would really eat the lemon wedge, it's just the principal of it.
Now onto my boyfriends meal, so when we order a steak sandwich, you figured you'd get nice, thick slices of meat in a bun of some sort. NOPE! not here. It was a steak, in between two sandwich breads and an onion ring (COUNT 'EM, 1 RING) on top of the meat. Some unseasoned fries on the side. And that's it. In the end, my boyfriend tossed aside the bread and just ate the steak with a knife and fork. (yes folks, it was that thick). When he asked for ranch, the server said he would bring it right away. And he was prompt!!! Brought the ranch out right away!!! ...... YEAH RIGHT! Our ranch never came.
Now that my pancake adventure was truly ruined, I asked for the bill and a red velevt cupcake to go. When the bill came, he charged me 6.25 for the small stack of pancakes and an additional 1.50 for the blueberries. Not only am I kind of sick, but now you want to over charge me for mediocre food and horrible service?!?
So get this... when you order pancakes, this is how the menu is set up. It reads PANCAKES and below it to the left it reads Small Stack $6.25 and Large Stack $7.25. To the right of that it reads, Blue Berries Pancakes, Whole Wheat Pancakes and Banana Nut Pancakes. I ordered a small stack of BlueBerries Pancakes. WHen I got my bill, he charged me an additional $1.50 on top of my small stack because he thought I wanted the additional fruit on my pancakes. WTH?! He said, usually if I were to order blueberry pancakes, it would come with 2 but since I said small stack, it came with 3! WHAT A CONFUSING, HORRENDOUS MENU! I was just in disbelief that I paid the bill and left with my red velvet in hand.
Okay... so everyone talked about the red velvet right?! I was hoping it would be my one Bake N Broil savior to the entire trip. Bit into the cupcake, and it was BURNT. Yes, people, BURNT. The cupcake top was so crispy that it was like eating chips and the entire cake was burnt. This entire experience was so upsetting that I jumped on and wrote a yelp review right away.
SCREW YOU BAKE N BROIL. I WANT MY 22.50 BACK! -

Really, I can't comment about the food too much. All I've had here, meal wise, were the fries and pancakes, I think, and neither was exceptional. The fries tasted like they'd come straight from the freezer, which may or may not be the case... but I can buy a bag of Ore Ida fries from Sams if that's what I wanted. I don't really remember anything about the pancakes, other than they were huge, so that probably speaks for itself. Dessert wise, though, I am a fan. I've had several of their pies, and even though my last visit here was some time ago, I still find myself craving the Lemon Lush. It's tart and sweet without being too much of either one, and one slice can feed two or three people.
Service is kind of hit or miss, so much so that I actually used the cliche phrase, "hit or miss". It's hard to judge a place based on the service because it really can vary on any given day depending on the mood of your server. It's also hard not to judge a place based on the service, because... well, no one wants to be made to feel like they're inconveniencing someone by asking them to do their job. Having said all that, I feel like I've been waited on by some particularly sweet people here, and some particularly rude (perhaps irritated?) people. So, my advice? Go in expecting the worst, but hoping for the best. You can't be disappointed if your expectations are low.
Actually, that can be applied to a great many facets of living.
Anyhow, the dining room is cute. The walls are painted in my favorite shade of green, and the restaurant looks like it could have been a tearoom in another life. In this way, Jongewaard's Bake N Broil endears itself to me. -

How have I not written about this landmark in the LBC. I first came here over 35 years ago with my parents and enjoyed outstanding food. Love the pancakes here, simply the best.
Now it's 35 years later and nothing has changed but the paint. Still the same great taste and service. Service is above average probably cause they let you eat. They make their rounds refilling drinks, but they let you enjoy your meal.
I'm a pancake fool and these are the best. Even the whole wheat cakes are good too. I rarely order anything else here, but today I got the avo/bac/cheese omelet. Thick sliced bacon, fresh avocado, and their own salsa made this a great change. I did steal some of my girlfriends pancakes....lol.
You have to check out their baked goods too. Muffins, pies, cakes, and other assorted goodies are worth the to-go bag.
We know to go early. We got their about 7:30am and by 8am it started to get packed. The price runs about $10pp on the average, but well worth it.
Check it out and let me know what you think..... -

Driven by this place too many times to count - finally stopped in for lunch with a coworker.
I'm expecting some great kick ass food as the wait was about 20 minutes for a seat before 11 AM AND the average 4 star rating on Yelp with over 600 reviews. Anyway ...
our server was rude and unprofessional. To speak to anyone like she spoke to us was not just uncalled for; I would have actually have sided with my coworker had he gotten up and slapped her. It's not anyone's problem other than the server herself, or managements if she's working on what's supposed to be her day off. Actually, I don't condone physical violence however I do support a zero % tip in cases like that though.
Food was ok. I ordered the Chicken Fried Steak and was told that it's a hearty meal. For a child maybe. It was one patty with some hash browns and two eggs on the side. Meat was a little chewy and the gravy was bland. Adding pepper helped as well as adding Tabasco sauce on the hash browns. Hard to screw up eggs and they didn't in this case.
No desire to go back. No desire to wait for OK food. No desire to deal with parking there on Atlantic or walking from Linden (around the block). No desire to deal with attitude like we did from our server. Don't even care to sample their red velvet cupcake that I've heard good things about.Listed in: 1 Shot - NOT

Jongewaard's Bake N Broil... restaurants should follow your lead on fantastic and down-to-earth food! The staff treats you like you're family and the food sure tastes like a home cooked meal prepared by grandma. I sampled the chicken pot pie and boy was it heavenly. The crust was freshly baked, so it was crispy and flaky and ohh so... good :)
I also had the privilege to sample their award-winning lemon lush dessert. Extremely light but smooth and tasty. Oh and did I mention that the prices are extremely reasonable? Yeah, Bake N Broil you rock! -

I've been coming here at least once a week for breakfast to-go. I used to come here a lot ( before kids) and enjoyed eating here both alone and with my husband or a group of friends. I do love breakfast here, the pumpkin spice pancakes are a favorite in my family, especially my 2 toddlers. Gotta love anything you can pour warm butter sauce on top of! The Denver omelette is tasty, with either plain or seasoned potatoes. Their pies, cakes, and cupcakes are indescribable! Definitely worth the trip to try any of those. And the muffins! They have different flavors each day. My favorites are cream cheese, raspberry streusel, orange glaze, and chocolate chip. I just tried a pecan roll the other day. It looked so good coming out of the pan still warm and gooey. So yummy! I'll continue stopping here after work in the morning for a great breakfast and even better sweets!

This place never disappoints! My boyfriend is a breakfast snob and rarely likes to try something new. Somehow I managed to drag him to this place and he has been in love ever since!
If you're planning on eating at Jongewaard's on a Saturday or Sunday be sure to get there early because it gets packed super fast. The staff is friendly and efficient and your coffee cup is never empty. Besides their everyday menu you can also try one of their specials such as pumpkin pancakes and Russian omelets, found on a white board in the waiting area.
I enjoy their array of fluffy omelet dishes...especially the spinach, mushrooms, chives and jack cheese. The vegetables are mixed into the egg batter as well as stuffed into the fold making every bite perfection. Get the seasoned hash-browns and definitely try one of their in house baked goods. Delish! -

So she says "Your party is just too large, the cooks can't keep up! you have to wait". These are the words of our waitress after being politely asked; "excuse me, we are still missing a few of our dishes. Do you know about how much longer it will be?"
Granted, I should've checked Yelp before heading out to this place on a Wednesday morning to see if they could accomodate large parties, but I needed to find a place fast for breakfast for my relatives visiting from out of the country, and I was still half-asleep when I pulled up the website and the only thing that stood out to me was the 4 star rating. I thought, you can't go wrong with four stars! AND IT"S DOWN the street from home!
Just for the record, our party was a party of 10. However, by the way this waitress kept speaking to us, you would've thought we were a party of 50!!!!!!!!!
Anyway, the food was just ok...Trust me, I would've said this even if the service had been excellent. Nothing I can really think of to rave about and deserving of about 2 1/2 stars, but the service we received was just RUDE! Thus, the single star. At least this waitress was.
When we were being seated, she said. "your party is just too large, we will see what we can do" when we placed our order she said "it will be a while, your party is just too large". When we received our food two plates at a time with about 10 minute intervals, and I asked when the last three omelettes were coming she said "Your party is just too large, the cooks can't keep up! you have to wait". Now, by this point I was embarrassed with my guests and really upset at the waitress. Not wanting to cause a scene, I remained calm and quiet.
The kicker was, though, when I overheard her telling the couple that was seated directly behind us that their food was taking a long time to arrive because of the large party that they had to tend to. I shook my head in disbelief and thought about yelping my experience...and contacting the manager. DEFINITELY WILL NOT BE BACK. -

Delicious homestyle food here! There is often a line of people waiting to be seated, but it is worth the wait. Breakfast dishes are delicious, and they serve fresh baked muffins. I had a good quiche made with green chiles and cheese...very tasty. The sandwiches and burgers are good, but if you're having dinner, you may want to try one of the dinner specials like chicken fried steak or pot roast. If you have room for dessert after dinner, have some ice cream, or a slice of one of their cakes or pies!

Let me preface my review by saying my mom was eating here before I was born. When I was a child growing up in the LBC when mom didnt feel like cooking and she felt guilty about heading to mickey d's...we came here. It has all the comforts of home with delicious food. Service is great and most of the workers have watched me grow up from a tot to a woman. Their baked goods are to die for and it's hard to go here without bringing home a sweet treat...or two. It's not a big place so prepare to wait, but it's worth it. Also men sometimes complain the portions for dinner are not big enough but I am fine with it. It is a family owned and run place so most of the workers are grandkids, nieces, nephews hence the lack of color in the workforce. If you are in Long Beach, stop by!

So I found this place on yelp by searching for pot pie. I've been meaning to try it out for a few months now and yesterday was finally the night.
Went over to the place with my girlfriend and her brother on our date night. We had a good time! Note to others. Counter seating is first come first serve. When we came in at around 8pm on a Wednesday night, there were 3 or 4 parties ahead of us. After standing there for a few minutes and realizing the counter seats were open, I asked and so we took them.
We ended up ordering two chicken pot pies and a tuna sandwich. My pot pie came with a choice between four soups, of which I chose the vegetable beef soup. My experience with soups usually only includes chicken noodle or minestrone and so I took a risk (for me) and went with it. I was actually pleasantly surprised at how yummy it tasted. The flavors weren't to bold, the meat added a nice contrast to the veggies. I ended up finishing my little bowl!
I got a side of cornbread (man this stuff is good. I'd rate it as tasting better than another franchise (which will remain nameless!), it was a lot smoother tasting and the butter was yummy.
The chicken pot pie tasted just how I wanted. But be warned, it comes out pipping hot, I burned myself due to my impatience :(. I love the crumbly top! And it tasted really smooth. The sliced carrots in there were pretty over sized now that I think of it. Chicken chunks were good. I'm a fan of it but I don't know if I'd go as so far to recommend it to other people as a must try. I'd definitely classify it as one of the menu items that is a safe bet, as far as being a solid dish for next time I go there.
I really liked the quaintness of this place. But be warned this place is pretty small. I'd imagine max seating capacity inside is like 25-35 range? Our server was very polite. Bill was average too, came out to $30 for three people, we all got water :P. I look forward to returning with my girlfriend to this place. -
Review from Kent D.
Located off the corner of 37th & Atlantic in Long Beach, this bustling little greasy spoon was already packed to the gills by 11:00am on a lazy Sunday morning. Clocking in at about 20 minutes for a seat, I figured that wasn't too long of a wait considering the massive amount of patrons anxiously waiting for a table at this popular joint.
Just a little tip, if you wait inside by the bar, you can skip the queue and seat yourself once a space opens up!
As soon as we sat ourselves down in the comfy booth, I peered out the large French windows of the restaurant and saw leaves of red and gold falling from the trees outside. Yes, Fall was officially here and i was definitely beginning to feel the warmth of the season inside the homey confines of this cozy neighborhood diner.
Glancing over the specials of the day, I noticed the pumpkin spice pancakes were being served. I'm a sucker for seasonal fare and anything pumpkin spice! Obviously, this order was a no brainer in my book. We had heard an earful from our friends about the delicious lemon blueberry pancakes, so we went with an order of that, as well.
For the entrees we ordered the famous chicken pot pie, chicken fried steak and some pumpkin coffee cake & a cream cheese pocket.
The pancakes came out first, nice and hot i might add! The fluffy pumpkin spice pancakes came with a side of warm butter sauce while the lemon blueberry pancakes were paired with a sweet raspberry sauce. Both flapjacks did not disappoint as my friends and I gobbled up the two orders in no time flat! It goes without saying that the lemon blueberry pancakes were phenomenal, but I'd have to say the pumpkin spice pancakes edged out the lemon blueberry as my personal favorite! One whiff of that enticing aroma of pumpkin spice and I was instantly hooked! This stuff was legit! Mmmm mmmm mmm goodness in every bite!
The chicken pot pie and chicken fried steak came out next with a side of corn chowder and boy were they worth the wait!
The corn chowder was surprisingly good! Why do you ask? Well, in addition to having a great velvety and creamy texture, they added crisp bacon to the soup! Ahhh yeeeah, this winning soup was so hearty and delicious, it was practically a meal in itself!
The chicken pot pie had a flaky golden crust and upon cutting it open with my trusty knife, the mild aroma of warm buttery pie filling had me drooling incessantly! As I swirled my spoon around the pie filling, I could see generous chunks of white meat chicken and after my first bite, I was in chicken pot pie heaven! It was warm, comforting and had just the right portion of tender chicken to veggies to satisfy my hunger pangs for a good old fashioned pot pie. Trust, chicken pot pie fans will not be disappointed with this traditional favorite!
I stole a few greedy bites of the chicken fried steak from my buddy and it was nice and crisp on the outside and perfectly tender on the inside! Good stuff!
The pumpkin spice coffee cake was also very tasty! With bits of crunchy walnuts & plump raisins tucked into virtually every bite, this fluffy little treat was surprisingly substantial and incredibly satisfying! If you're more of a fan of cheese danishes, then the cheese pocket might be a wiser choice. The cream cheese in the center was soft & mildly sweet and there was just enough filling to prevent this comforting little treat from weighing me down.
Throughout our meal, our server kept our coffees topped off and our waters constantly filled! She offered some great suggestions and never made us feel forgotten despite the heavy dining traffic! When we got our checks, i was pleasantly surprised we didn't break the bank either!
So there ya have it, great food, reasonable prices & friendly service to boot!
Overall, a spectacular first experience at Jongewaards! Would I come back? You better bet I will. I've only scratched the surface of their extensive menu of good eats! Next time I just might have to give that homemade peach pie a whirl...
Until then,

(Wish I could give this place zero stars...)
After I heard so much about this place from classmates and one of my chemistry professors, I thought I would come and check out this place with my fiance.
What a big disappointment! This place is totally racist and will only serve white people. Now you may think I'm being stereotypical of that response, but after my experience here, a number of my friends (who are also not white) had all said the same. So anyways, what happened was that my fiance and I came in here to try one of their cakes since I heard so much about it. Well when we came in, no one would serve us. The servers, who were all young white guys, probably college age, saw us and just blatantly ignored us. Even the seating hostess, some elderly old white woman, ignored us and no one would serve us.
Well we finally did get severed after maybe 10 minutes of just standing there... the place was empty...maybe 2 tables were in here eating, so it wasn't busy, a bus boy, who is Hispanic, took my order for the black forest chocolate cake. It looked good in the bakery case, but it did not taste as good as it looked. It wasn't that chocolaty sweet and was quiet disappointing. I'm glad to know that this place is just overly hyped and that I'm not missing anything.
So if you are white, then you'll get to order here. But if you are a minority like pretty much everyone else who lives in Long Beach, don't expect to receive good service (or any service for that matter). -

Legendary. Like a member of my family. If you have to eat, eat here.
Have to try the French Onion Soup (I never knew I could love something so much). Also, have to try everything else as it is just really, really good here. -
Review from Zach P.
My grandmother would have loved this place. Old school home cooking with a homely feel.
I have been here several times. It's always been a hit or miss. Some of their meals are very good, others are on the bland side. No beer or wine is served.
Our most recent trip we came in at around 5:00PM on a weekday, which is apparently their rush hour since there was a wait and by the time we left about an hour later it was only half full. I guess that's what happens when you cater mostly to a "senior" crowd. I'm not sure if they have an early bird special.
I went with the Lemon Pepper Chicken with rice pilaf which comes with boiled carrots, soup, salad or soup and salad. I went with the salad and French Onion soap which was pretty good. Plenty of melted cheese on top. Salad comes with two sourdough rolls. The chicken was one of the better dishes I've had there. It had a nice mix of seasonings.
So whenever the grandparents are in town, this is definitely the place to take them. -

OMG THE ONLY THING I MISS ABOUT LONG BEACH!!
So I moved away about a year ago and I'm making plans to go here for breakfast when I visit in Dec. That's how much I love and MISS this place.
Lemon blueberry pancakes with raspberry sauce. I miss yooou!
Their strawberry jam... I used to go here after my runs to refuel with "toast" and their jam was the icing on the cake.
And in the past they have made a fresh peach pie for me.
Never had a bad meal here. Cant wait to eat here in Dec. -

I'm not a big pancake fan, but those lemon blueberry pancakes with raspberry sauce are perfection! They kind of taste like a bowl of fruity pebbles.
I also tried the russian omelette which was pretty good. It tasted like a cheddar cheese omelette stuffed with homemade mashed potatoes and bacon.
The service is good, but the place is small and gets very crowded, so prepare to wait wait at least 20 min to get a table almost any day. -

This was such a great discovery! I would have never picked this little jewel for brunch of it weren't for a visiting friend who lived in the area. It's a quaint little diner that's open and welcoming even in the rain. We came at 11:30 am on a Saturday and had to wait half an hour to get a table but it wasn't a bad wait. Though our other friend had not arrived yet they let us sit at a table and order beforehand so kudos for that.
So many yummy things to order from it would've been hard to make a decision come order time! But we knew our priorities thanks to Yelp. :D We got the lemon blueberry pancakes with raspberry sauce which are seriously The. Best. Pancakes. Everrrr. I died and went to heaven. Was supposed to eat slow to wait for our other friend but I couldn't stop stuffing my mouth with delicious lemon blueberry goodness. We also had the French onion soup and a salad with raspberry vinaigrette for our sides and they were good. There was chicken fried steak which is one of the best I've had. We got the dinner so it came with mashed potatoes and sweet green peas. We got the chicken pot pie which has a crust that melts in your mouth and a filling that you can't get enough of. We had the Denver omelette which I didn't get to taste but it looked good. The hash browns that came with it was good. The jams they had on the table (strawberry and an orange marmalade) tasted yummy, too. Alas, there was no more room in our tummies to try the many awesome looking pies! But like MacArthur, we shall return.
Love the tea which comes in brightly colored mix and match almost eclectic ceramic mini kettles and plates. It's a homey atmosphere with a view of the kitchen or the street as you enjoy your meal. Most all the staff are very friendly and truly make it an enjoyable experience for you.
Located on 37th and Atlantic, finding parking on the street is a bit difficult but you can use the parking lot of the Christian (?) church right across from them save on Sundays. I plan to take my family here even though we have to drive out of the way just to dine once more at Jongewaard's. -

This is not fine dining, but it is perfect for what it is: a neighborhood diner/coffee shop--the best of its kind in Long Beach.
If it were in L.A., you'd find David Lynch here having coffee and pie. But since it's Long Beach, you'll find Russ Parsons, who often gives shout outs to Bake N Broil in his food columns.
I've been eating here for over twenty years. -

Second time here, Tried the specials and shared them with my family , the Mac and cheese was just okay , and the country chicken platter needed a little more flavor, the standout was the potroast , which very tender delish, starting out tho I did have split pea soup which was chock full of big chunks of ham and bacon! Yummy! All the food was in need of a little more salt or flavor in general! But nice portions and good value and you can tell they use fresh ingredients! Service was good except fir the gruffy busboy! Dessert is where they made up for everything , we shared a red velvet cupcake which was moist and lush , and the holiday lush pie which lived up to it's name with a cream cheese filling topped off with a cranberry and apple compote , and fresh whipped cream and a nut streusel !! Yummy!!!

Pretty big diner. I thought as I was walking in that there was only the front end, but you walk past the kitchen and bathroom and there's another dining area.
Loveeee this home-y breakfast vibe given. Came here on a Tuesday morning with a friend, I ordered the banana nut pancakes...very very sweet. My friend ordered the quiche of the day (yum!) and had a pumpkin muffin sprinkled with light frosting and a fruit plate on the side.

Food came out fairly quick, service was awesome. Nice neighborhood also. Parking was meehhh. But I'd come back again and try a different dish since my banana pancakes were a weeee bit too sweet haha. It was the quiche that got me. -

This is my ultimate go to for any occasion, breakfast, lunch or dinner and once you've eaten here you're gonna become a regular too. I've never had a problem with customer service, at least not enough to have it be any less than a five star. There is a wait sometimes but this just goes to show you how good it is.
My favorites are the veggie beef soup (ask for a side of croutons for the top), veggie sandwich on squaw bread, the dinner rolls, the pumpkin pancakes, all the pies and my all-time indulgence...the cream cheese french toast pockets! Soooooo good! I consider myself to be a bit of a French Toast expert and I've had it at most of the places in Long Beach and this blows the competition away by far! Even my friends who aren't sweets fans (Whatever!) love it.
I have more favs but all you need to know is the menu is great, the food is real and all made right there in the kitchens and you can't beat the prices for real food.
Thanks for being great Bake N Broil. -

Jongewaard's Bake N Broil. Trying saying that ten times fast. ;)
We came here with friends post-Long Beach Marathon for a celebratory sweet treat. I'm still marveling over our ability to make room for dessert after our (ginormous) celebratory lunch (review soon to follow!).
I ordered the Carrot Cake which was good but not great. It was dense with a hint of spice and full of grated carrots and chopped walnuts. The cream cheese frosting wasn't overwhelmingly sweet which was appreciated. Unfortunately, the cake itself was disappointing to eat as it was dry and crumbly. I've had tastier carrot cake from the Vons grocery store's bakery section. I'm just sayin'.
My fiance's Apple A La Mode on the other hand tasted delicious. You can never go wrong with apple pie!
The service here was excellent. Very friendly and attentive wait staff. I would pay a second visit to Jongewaard's in the near future. However, I think I would pass on the Carrot Cake.Listed in: Long Beach Marathon 2011

I know that everyone has a different standard for a five star rating. My standards have gotten tougher the longer I have been on yelp.
But every once in while you come across a place that hits every single spot on the check list.
Service - Spot on. Coffee the minute we sat down by a server that is friendly, polite and yes very cute. What more can you ask for.
Look and feel - We were seated in one of the bigger booths. The place is well lit, perfectly clean and decorated in a way that you almost feel like you are in a country kitchen.
Food - Everything else is great but it would have all been a waste if the food didn't match up.
I had the country breakfast: Two perfectly prepared over easy eggs, Two deliciously spiced and good sized sausage links, a sizable portion of crispy home style potatoes that included just the right amount of onions and peppers and then the piece de resistance was two fluffy freshly baked biscuits covered in a heavenly country gravy.
The combination of items on this breakfast plate combined to make this the best breakfast I have had in years.
I am so glad I finally got to experience breakfast at Jongewaard's although I still am not sure how to pronounce the damn name. -

Nice diner in Long Beach. I came here after an event at the Queen Mary in Long Beach. It was pretty busy the night I came in. Sold out of the Chicken Pot Pie that I came here for. The service was pretty helpful and attentive.
The food itself was so so. I tried the country fried chicken. It came with tomato cream bacon soup, veggies, and mashed potatoes with country gravy. The food lacked a lot of flavor. The chicken was cooked well but the seasoning just wasn't there. The country gravy was okay. I am usually excited about eating it but that just wasn't the case that night. Dessert I got a chocolate butter cake with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The cake was okay. The frosting and ice cream were the best parts. -

I love Bake N Broil! They hold a special place in my baked-goods loving heart. I've eaten here a few times for breakfast and sometimes brunch, which was just okay! The only thing that made me knock down a star was their service. There were a few instances when the girls who worked there seemed a bit snooty and unhelpful. After that, I decided that Bake N Broil isn't so much a sit down restaurant for me, but rather a very home-y bakery. Bake N Broil is one of the top reasons I look forward to my birthday (red velvet cake, droool*)...
Speaking of my birthday, earlier last year my mom ordered me a birthday cake from here and they were just ridiculous towards her. First off it costs extra to have writing on a cake, second they misspelled my name and didn't want to change it. My mom told me that when she picked up my cake, the writing was in blue when she specifically asked for pink and the server's response "We didn't know if it was a girl or a boy'...Stupid ass. Are you serious!?? Then the girl has the audacity to ask "You don't like it?" and my mom says "No!" so then the server says "What do you want me to do?!" Umm, how about FIX IT you arrogant, snobby, idiotic bitch!? They didn't fix shit on there so I ended up not taking pictures of the cake because it looked like I was having a baby shower for a baby boy! Why that idiot server bothered asking if my mom liked it is beyond me, not fixing anything just made her look like even more stupid, but one thing is for sure: that's NOT gonna happen this year! Or any year after this... I will make sure of it!!! -

I absolutely LOVE Bake n Broil!! It's been one of my favorites for 7yrs. I honestly have never been disappointed. The customer service is great and the food cannot be compared to any other.
The clam chowder is the best. I'm from the South and the red velvet cake is THE closest to the way my grandmother used to make it. You have to try it!! Also, the lemon lush pie is mmm, mmm, good too. -

Chicken pot pie is amazing, but their spaghetti tasted like Ragu - generic. I'd only come back for the chicken pot pie and desserts!

Just went to have dinner last night and it was a blast. The place is on a corner and parking is available across the street in the churches parking lot. The location is small so we took the bar seats which are first come first serve. I originally wanted a chicken pot pie but I quickly changed my mind when i saw a half sandwich, soup or salad, pie and a drink. I ordered a tuna sandwich which was nothing extraordinary, it was a bit on the sweet side. The pickle spear that came with it was an amazing contrast. I ate a chicken rice soup which was very tasty, it was creamy and warm it made me feel happy inside. I think next time I will just order a large bowl of soup. The pie slice was apple which tasted perfect, the apple was tender. I did manage to try the pot pie which was creamy and you could taste how fresh the vegetables where. I hope to go back again soon.

"There's not enough cheese on this bitch !" she said contemplating the mound of fries in front of her. I spooned my nondescript splitpea and ham soup into my mouth and nodded. "Y'know, it's pretty hard to fuck up chili cheese fries," she continued and I chimed in, "yep and the quickest way is to add beans." As we tried our best to correct the blandness of the appetizers with dashes of table salt and pepper, I gazed around the quaint little diner and noticed that the food was nearly as bland as the guests. I half expected to see Newt Gingrich seated at the counter amongst what appeared to be his suburban, geriatric constituency. It dawned on me that if a hatecrime were to be committed, it would be myself and my ravenhaired companion who would likely be the victims of its cheery, blue-eyed violence. "At least the staff looks like they vote Democrat," I mused and wondered if maybe we shouldn't have opted for American cuisine tonight.
But when our waitress brought out our meals, I was pleasantly surprised. The chicken potpie was hearty and flavorful, topped by the perfect golden blonde crust. Each bite confirmed that this was probably the best chicken potpie I have ever eaten. Christina's meatloaf was a thick slice of comfort on a plate. The moist texture of the meat swaddled my tongue like a cozy blanket, soothing away my dissent. In true American fashion, the portions here at Jongewaard's are generous, and the menu boasts classic fare like pot roast, countryfried steak, burgers, and sandwiches. Nothing too exotic or strange here, which is how they prefer things in the suburbs. -

I came here on a Saturday morning for brunch and the wait was about 15 minutes. I've always driven by this place before, but never seemed to care much for it, until today. It was my lucky day!
I ordered the avocado, bacon and cheddar omelet and let's just say that I did not eat a damn thing the rest of the day. They give you a generous serving of salsa on the side, so I helped myself and dumped the whole thing on my omelett. Melted cheddar, soft-ripened slices of avocado and crunchy of pieces of bacon make it a party in your mouth.
I've also sampled their chicken pot pie. The chicken is moist and tender, not dry like that Marie Calendar's ishhh. The crust.....WOW. Let's just leave it at that.
Since we were stuffed, we ordered the lemon bar and red velvet cupcake to take home. Lemon bar was good, but red velvet is the Real Deal Holyfield! They must do some magical warlock stuff to make it taste this good. I will be back and bringing the fellas to try for sure! -

The food was great! The customer service is lacking! There just doesn't seem to be an efficient cohesive and polite way of dealing with the customers. Setting that aside the food is second to non! I say give them a try and have your own experience...
Food 10/10
Cust. Ser. 2/10
Sorry Fia D., clearly that was a disrespectful idiot that has nothing better to do other than attack paying customers. I def. won't make this place my regular go to spot. -

Jongewaard's Bake N Broil saves the day on Thanksgiving!
For some reason mom didn't have pie in the annual spread! So, headed out all stuffed from our early eating on a doubtful quest for some baked love. 1st spot of course was closed. Started dreading the walk down the freezer aisle at the supermarket. After stopping for coffee we put the foodie apps to work & found JBNB listed. Made the call anyway. They picked up! Asked if they had any pies left. The woman said yes but they closed @ 12N it was almost 3:30. Told her oh, well have a Happy Thanksgiving. She then said if you know what you want & are close by I could have them ready for ya! She ran down her short list & we went for the Holiday Lush(I think that's the name) & Pumpkin. Got there in 5 minutes to find our pies waiting with a friendly staff more than happy to help us out=o) The Holiday cranberry cheesecake pie was a MAJOR HIT & is now hopefully a regular showing at our house! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! -

I love breakfast - - - any time of the day! I can't believe I never knew about this place until a good friend of mine mentioned it and took me here!
Bake N Broil is such a cute little venue that is so bright and cheery all around! I came here on a Monday morning around 10AM and there was a wait for a table so my friend and I opted to sit at the counter (no wait -- I needed my coffee pronto!) and we were helped immediately. I can only imagine how packed this place must get on the weekends because there are limited tables and the waiting area is small so I would definitely recommend coming by on a weekday or calling in advance to find out how long the wait it.
We ordered the Huevos Rancheros with seasoned hash browns and sourdough toast & the Blueberry Lemon Pancakes with Raspberry sauce (check out my photos!!) and both plates were delicious!! I can't wait to come back for more! The pancakes were not too sweet at all! I though the lemon and blueberry combination was brilliant and the raspberry sauce added that extra kick that puts a smile on your face after every bite! I highly recommend trying both of these plates! You won't regret it!
The service was fast, friendly and efficient. I love how the staff all wore cute aprons and were very cheerful. I need to come back to try their lunch and dinner menus (IF i can break away from the breakfast menu!) The food is affordable and definitely worth the wait. I'd also like to come back and try their desserts sometime!
Grab a friend and check out this place! You'll be happy you did :)Listed in: Breakfast & Brunch
