Review from Darcy P.
This is a really great trail and I advise everyone to do it at least once. Get a group together and walk down to Jones Beach Theater when there's a concert and just chillax by the water and listen to some (hopefully) good tunes. Or rent a bike from the local bike shop and trek on down to the beach. Beats paying for parking! For me, the day time is a little too busy. I'm not a fan of the "bike people". If I hear "left!" on more time when I'm already practically in the dirt, I'm sticking out my leg. Plus I hate tanning only one side of my body lol (this happened last year, not such a hot look).
I, personally, love running this trail. Not only because I feel absolutely great about myself after running about 9 1/2 miles (round-trip) but it is so peaceful in the evening. The sun setting over the bay, the smell of the seawater, the light breeze, who could ask for a better setting to let your mind go free and just run. -

A nice bike path, especially early in the morning for a sunrise.
Not much excitement, some ups and downs over the bridges, I mostly do it for exercise but it can be a killer with wind. I would recommend it on a nice cool day or if you don't mind being in the sun for the whole trip. It's roughly around 4.25 miles each way.
It's a great local path. If you are looking for another local path also try Bethpage path starting at sunrise hwy. -

Great bike path which begins at the Cedar Creek Park in Wantagh. Path runs about 5 miles and ends at the Nokea Theater at Jones Beach.
Unfortunately where the bike path ends bicycles are prohibited. So because of that I took by my bike through to see what would happen if I got caught. As I rode by several Jones Beach attendants nobody said anything to me and the 5 other bikers right by my side.
Overall great smooth path leading into Jones Beach and nice views of the bay. -

freeport's got it's allure, true. but stay on the LIRR just a bit longer and get off at Wantagh, with your bike - the route is a great prelude to the beach! besides, bikewise you're not anxious to catch the last shuttle from the beach, or waiting and wondering if it will even show up or if there's room!
descend from the platform at the rear of the train, pass by the bike shop on a busy street, cross the busy intersection, and make a left at the next intersection. you can make any right turn to get to an entrance to the park within a few blocks or just continue ahead to the main park entrance. along the right side of the park near to a big rock the bike path starts, about six miles of roller bladers and walkers and other bikers. it is alongside traffic, but that seems inconsequential. often there's a big headwind going, sometimes very strong (the tailwind return is awesome!). cross over three small bridges (the third usually necessitates stopping to allow others to pass).
the problem - a serious problem - is that the path ends right before the stadium, and the "no bikes" sign means riding through the huge parking lot entails making sure some overzealous cop isn't about to tell you "no bikes." it hasn't happened, but it is far from welcoming! from there i go through the main lot, and walk my bike wherever i think i might come upon a cop. there is a bike rack, and a few places where a bike can be chained.
the "no bikes" policy is absurd - but bikes are doable. going back stop in the carvel! also, after doing it once or twice you'll be comfortable enough to ride along suburban wantagh streets instead of the first two streets which are high traffic. especially when returning with your ice cream.
also note - a bike pass for the LIRR costs (or used to cost) $5 and is (or was) good forever - keep it in plastic b/c otherwise it won't last forever. they don't always check it, it is their perogative, don't give them a hassle! one end of the LIRR cars has a handicapped logo - that usually provides a good space for a bike. i bring those bungy-hook ties to secure the bike. if you don't get a nadicapped seat it is possible to keep it by a door (possibly standing with it) because the doors usually open on a single side (except at jamaica at which doors on both sides open). the trains sometimes get very crowded - that's par for the course, and uncomfortable if you have a bike - perhaps a conductor will tell you there's no room. that's never happened to me, but i sometimes wonder.
downsides are where the path stops and the illegality of it all. also the LIRR side could be more accommodating.
